Hi everyone,
I am taking a poll to guage interest in the S4 Community for donating to and obtaining Carbonrom on the Verizon Galaxy S4.
CarbonRom is an aftermarket firmware based on the Android Open Source Project. I am not affiliated with any of the development of this rom. I am just a huge fan of their work and would love to see this rom come to our beloved S4. Having a device in hand to develop provides better success in providing a quality product. I am hoping this poll will help convince Carbonrom to purchase an S4 and begin development of it.
Here is a link to their goo.im developer page!

So what say ye!
UPDATE 5/28/13
There is now a secondary Carbon paypal link located here:
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=T447T4BPVX2TY
THIS LINK IS STRICTLY FOR DONATIONS TO HELP FUND THE PURCHASE OF A VERIZON GALAXY S4 FOR TEAM CARBON.
This link will remain open until the goal (cost of a used S4) is reached. Should the goal not be obtained, or one is obtained by Team Carbon by another method, the monies will be refunded. All donations will be recorded and added to the OP, so there is full transparency on our way to the goal. Let's help Team Carbon get this device so our beloved S4 can get some lovin!
DONATION LIST:
1. David M. -$10
2. Thomas S -$8

I had some problems on the S3 and went to Liquid / I do think that the developer has some talent and even lended some support ($$) but eventually went to Liquid prior to selling the S3. On the Touchwiz side, ScottsRoms always worked for me.
Thanks for the support guys. If enough is raised, I'd definitely like to support this device. I'm convinced that like the s3, this is going to be as close as we get to a nexus on Verizon.
justreboot, i'm not sure when you had your issues, but 1.7 is very solid, and in my opinion the nightlies even more so. Either way, 4.3 is going to be a complete rebase. We've got some exciting ideas in store.
I would do dirty, unforgivable things for Carbon on the GS4.

Oh. Oh my.
Looking at loki, the new bootloader unlock, I can say we'll definitely need to have a test unit to dev with. I'm not willing to blind dev on such a nice device anyway - you end up with a substandard rom in my opinion - but this one in particular will need more attention, since the bootloader unlock isn't a released tool so much as something we would need to integrate into the build process. On the plus side, it looks like we'd be able to do so fairly easily so we should be able to still have nightlies and the like.

I almost never go in Q & A, lol. I am not sure I can do testing if it is alpha-ish or if you need technical feedback, but I can run a beta that boots through its paces...basically like UAT. Edit: and i can do logcats, heh.
Agreed. Still something that should be tested and used if it is to be properly maintained.

I used carbon on my note 2, i would definitely be interested.
We're cooking up some ridiculous new stuff. I think everyone is going to be VERY happy.
Carbon rom was probably the sexiest thing I ever ran on my bionic. I would donate a few bucks if it helped get us support for an S4.
by the way, the experimental halo releases tonight were not the interesting things i'm referring to...

Just a little knowledge to the users that are out there. Right now we don't have a real ability of installing custom roms anyways, just hold on until we get a working kernel source so that we have a custom recovery. Then do what you want with your money.
I agree. Far be it from me to tell people how to use their money, but at this point we can't even get the compiled kernel from Samsung's source to boot.
If anyone out there is confident in their ability to release a product, I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest purchasing the device up front (credit card?), and asking for donations after releasing the product. Just my opinion.

Gotta agree 100%.
I'm also a little gun shy after I donated to help buy a Droid for the guy on another forum who then got distracted by other projects.
On the other hand, I'm sure Koush and Cyanogenmod get donations they haven't even asked for.

Asking someone to buy you a phone so you can develop on it is pretty shady at best, even when you dont seem that willing to help with the actual code. The work you have done seems good, but from what i can tell, you're more of a chef than a dev. I am more a chef as well, i dont know code very well, but am learning. At the moment, our efforts on getting a recovery are turning up at nothing, so asking for people to make a donation to get you a phone that you wont be able to push roms out for yet is just not the way to go. Advertise again when we have a working recovery, if we do get to that point.

Actually I am not a chef. I build from AOSP and other things. I know a lot of Java and some C++. I was not able to build from AOSP on the D2 because of several things Motorola has left out. I tried over and over. I am asking to donate so I will be able to get AOSP roms and source build things on this device. If you do not wish to donate do not. I am just asking so I can make roms better for the device when the recovery is booted and released. That is all.
Umm... get donations from the d1 and d2 work that you've already done, buy a Fascinate, create ROMs for that, and THEN (if it's a halfway decent job) people will donate without you even needing to ask them. Why ask people to pay for something that you haven't even done yet but then reassure them it'll happen because of your other work? If what you did with the d1/2 is good then shouldn't you be able to get donations from that? I'm not accusing you of trying to scam people I'm just telling you what seems to make the most sense.

Well, once again, I'm not accusing you of trying to scam. But you do have to look at this from everyone else's view and realize people are not going to be too quick to jump on this. If there's not much coming in from work you have actually already done then it really doesn't seem like there's going to be much turnout for something that, at this point, is just based on your word.
So what's the exact problem with the recovery? Some threads say that you guys are able to get into the recovery anyway?

the problem right now with the recovery is that we cannot even get a custom kernel to boot, which is the starting point for a working recovery.

I probably will be able to help with the kernel. Is there a place I will be able to contact you?
Edit: I will not be participating in this bounty any longer because I have pre-ordered the Note 3. I don't know if there is a way to transfer control of this thread to another user, if there is, please PM me if you want to take the responsibility. In addition, @mse_uk is also withdrawing from the bounty and can no longer provide the Note II demo unit, although he is maintaining his monetary pledge. I will also hold to my pledge as well. I hope you guys get root and a decent ROM very soon.
Why are we creating this bounty?
Coming from a T-Mobile Galaxy Note, I know how sad it can be when there is very little development for our phones. The Galaxy Mega 6.3 is a very good phone, but it needs some development to make it a great phone. We love our phones, but would love them that much more if we had the latest Android version. So what we need is a stable version of CyanogenMod for the Galaxy Mega 6.3. It must be CM 10.2 (Android 4.3) After considering the responses to this thread, it has been agreed that either a stable 10.1 or 10.2 ROM would be welcome. As an added bonus, member mse_uk has graciously offered his Galaxy Note II demo unit (i.e. fully functional, but minus the radio) to be added to the bounty provided that the developer provides a source repository for his work so that future development can be continued on the project.
What qualifies as a 'stable' ROM?
By stable, I mean the following must be working properly:
Calls
Data (including 3G/4G or LTE where available)
Camera (back and front)
Audio (speakers and earpiece)
Bluetooth
Wifi
GPS
Vibration
Rotation
Auto Brightness
Notification and LED (back/menu) lights
Android Keyboard
USB connection
What are the criteria for collecting the bounty?
In order to collect the bounty, the following conditions must be met:
1. Post in this thread that you are interested in the bounty and that you are working on getting it done (this will help avoid problems later).
2. Post your final version of the ROM in this thread so that pledgers can test and verify the stability of the ROM.
3. Provide the source repository for the ROM so that further development can continue.
Once these three conditions are met, the developer will be paid through their Paypal account and the Galaxy Note II will be shipped.
What can you do to make this a reality?
If you want to add to the bounty (and lets face it, you all do, lol) then post in this thread with your pledge, which I will add to this first post and the total. Any support that this gets is good, so even if you can only pledge a little, please do it. (As of now, I am leaving out pledges who are asking specifically about the AT&T version, because i'm not sure that their phone will be able to take advantage of any ROMs because of the current state of the bootloader. If that changes, I will include them in the total).
I will update this thread to keep everyone informed of the total pledged.

Techngro.....$25
mse_uk........$25
Warnahly.....$25
Krijs............$25

To be honest with you, I didn't consider the different versions. The international versions (i9200 and i905) have been out for a few weeks, so that is the one that most of us have been dealing with, but I know that the AT&T version (i527) was just announced and will be in stores soon (if not already).
I am pretty sure that the internals of all of the versions are the same, so it may be that one ROM will be good for all phones (except for the radios/modems). But we'll need a dev to actually confirm that.
I'll leave your pledge off until we can figure that out. Thanks for showing interest anyway.

I'll offer a Galaxy Note 2 GT-N7100X store demonstrator, fully functional except it can't be used to make calls. But I'd want access to the source to be able to carry on building.

@mse_uk: Thanks for making this available for the bounty, i'm sure it will peak a few dev's interest.
@everyone else: I wonder if there's a way to advertise our bounty on XDA. Dev's probably won't know about it until they come to this forum, which they probably won't do if they don't have a Mega or aren't thinking about getting one.
Maybe i'll tweet at XDA about the bounty with a link to this thread.
I think this bounty is unrealistic and the responses or lack of from developers will tell. The bounty is asking for a fully functional 10.2 rom with everything working. Right now, 10.2 is still in beta for the Note 2 and even when it gets out of beta and becomes a daily driver rom, there will still be some stuff that needs to be ironed out (Bluetooth, camera, low in call volume, etc...) if the past rom development is any indication.
Basically what I'm saying is I highly doubt any dev would take on the above requirements which is not realistic to complete and all for $75 and a phone that can't make calls.
You may want to revise the bounty for whoever can get CM to boot on the Mega 6.3 first. Then we should be able to get roms ported over. Then god willing, with the Megas going to the US, more devs get interested and develop for this phone.
At present only three people have pledged to a bounty, next week we could still have three, similarly we could have twenty which would be more appealing to somebody with the skills. I'm contributing towards a bounty because I just don't have the skills to do it myself even though i am giving it my best shot.
My latest failure after starting from scratch (again):

The Mega is still a fairly new device, and a niche device at that. But I don't see any problem with having a bounty for CM 10.2, even if all you say is true. The same time/effort that would be dedicated to any other device could be dedicated to this device as well. And the sooner we get someone working on the latest version, the less time we have to wait to get a stable version. I would rather have the effort put towards the latest version with slow progress, than someone quickly porting CM 9.
But perhaps your suggestion of having bounties for different stages does make sense. we could have a small bounty for getting 10.2 to boot, and then a larger bounty for a test version and a stable version. If people think that is a good idea, I can set it up that way.
As for the current level of the bounty, yeah it's small, but as I said, the Mega is still a fairly new device, and is just hitting US carriers now. It might take a few weeks, but as more people get their devices and seek to expand its capabilities, they will come here and hopefully pledge something towards the bounty. I think everyone who is participating knows that this won't be an overnight effort.
Edit: btw, did you come here because you have a Mega and were just browsing the forum, or did you see my tweet about this bounty?
I have a mega and note 2 so I switch back and forth. Unfortunately time is not on our side. The note 3 will be coming out next month and devs will be moving on the the latest and greatest. What we need is for devs to have a vested interest in developing for the mega even though it isn't popular. I personally love slimbean ROMs. They are well programmed *and* they support older devices as they continue to do great things for new devices.
What I'm trying to say is that for the mega to have a chance of getting custom roms , one of the devs would have to have the phone to maintain it.
So instead of waiting until a dev does all the work getting a working ROM and collecting the bounty, we should contact one of them eg. Slimbean lead dev asking if he could include the mega among supported devices and send him enough money to buy one himself.

15 days back i sent a PM to Indie but no response from him. Missing Omega , Criskelo and Android Revolution Badly... Only these developers with NEAK or perseus Kernel could remove little Touchwiz and other Lag .
Would be nice to see some love for this phone.
Pledging $25 as well.
I would happily toss in 15$ for a cm 10.1 or cm 10.2 that boots!!
Many a mickle makes a muckle, right?
Well I decided to start a thread for the tools we are developing. Once they are released i'm hoping a moderator can move this to the developing section. I will be making a email for questions and comments on this project in a bit and will post it once finished. You can also voice your opinion/comments here. To anyone that hasn't heard yet we are making a program that will unlock the bootloader, flash kdzs, add tweaks/mods, and flash roms/kernels. We should have a alpha version to our testers in the next few weeks and progress from there!! We will also be doing some giveaways and such along the way!! As a matter of fact, we are doing a contest to give away a 3-piece LG L9 black case starting today and ending Sunday at midnight!!!! It's a very nice case with a built in kickstand and belt clip holster!!!! We are going the old skool route for giving this away. So we have picked a number between 1 and 1500 whoever guesses the number or the closest wins!!! PM your guess!! Now how it will work if there is mulltiple people with the correct number is we will do a second number and the winner of the second guess wins. Good luck!!!
I hope it will work on p760 and all other variants
:good: :highfive:
We are getting closer ! can't wait for that tool to be released and finally try a CM11 (or your rom !)
This sounds sick, best of luck
I will happily test the tool during alpha and beta stages. PM me with details.
Well we have a winner for the case giveaway!! We decided on 967 which is simply 769 backwards. junglistknot was the winner and only 20 off with 987!! Good job!!! We also have a bluetooth speaker and a Bluetooth headset we will be giving away next!! Subscribe so you don't miss out. Also the people who are willling to be alpha and beta testers keep an eye in your inboxs. Hopefully next week we will be releasing the alpha version of the flash section of the tool which flashes the kdz and roots and pushes cwm and busy box. Don't worry as most of you probably know you can create a backup of your current setup to restore after testing so you will not lose any data. Hope everyone had a good weekend and I'll keep you posted when possible!

Awesome news.. definitely up for guinea pigging it.. so is the first alpha going to unlock and push cwm for unlocked boot loaders or 2nd init?

I've been meaning to explain a little more as to what we are planning as far as testing goes, however this is the only free time I've had due to the holiday weekend. So our plan is as follows, during the alpha phase we will release the individual features of the tool to our testers. Then once each feature is stable and working well it will be moved to the beta stage. During beta stage we will be compiling all the features into a single tool. This phase will work out any bugs in the tools interface and ensure the features remain stable when condensed into a single tool. Once every aspect of tool is working well and virtually bug free we will release the stable version. What we plan on releasing next week will simply wipe any current exploits on the phone, then flash a KDZ which makes the phone 100% STOCK with no root and back to stock recovery for those who have already rooted and are using a custom recovery. Then we will be releasing the section responsible for rooting the device, pushing CWM recovery, busy box and the flashable zip which will soon contain the bootloader exploit. Followed by releasing the actual exploit to unlock/bypass the bootloader ( the zip in the previous release will just be a test zip to address any issues we may face while pushing it to the sd card.) Once everything is worked out and working well we will move into beta phase. We will touch base and discuss this more when the time comes. Hope this clears up some questions and gives people a idea of how this will go. Everyone have a great day and stay tuned!

So this will basically be an automated way of flashing kdzs, rooting and pushing the 2nd init CWM. And the test zip won't do anything at all? Why not just upload the test zip so the testers can flash it? This phone is pretty much unbrickable. Sorry for the questions...I like to learn by asking people smarter than me...lol.

what she said
This is just my humble opinion, especially since I am a Windows software developer.
Y'all are making a mountain out of a mole hill. I understand the desire to help, which is greatly appreciated. Why reinvent the wheel tho??? We already have tools for flashing KDZs. We have a quite good recovery now, based on Philz-Touch, that works with both locked and unlocked bootloaders.
I know what's involved in writing software for Windows. Granted I'm old school and prefer to do things the hard way, go figure... but I still know none the less. The main issue of interest here, is simply unlocking the bootloader.
My two cents...

You may not have read about how this came about being as its in the original thread I commented in but we are in a developing program at Ohio university. This also explains the white cat tool name if anyone was wondering as well. We are running with it because it's part of school and we figured why not make something people will acctually use and appreciate. I've used a few of the tools you speak of for the KDZs and kind of a pain worrying about the host file and other issues they are known to encounter. You'll appreciate what we are doing when the end product is released. As for the recovery that's great you have a good recovery but who doesn't want another equally if not better one maybe? Not to mention if you go to a heavily supported forum there is more recovery versions/variants than I can count on my hands and feet! This goes for tools that do the same thing but were created by different developers. Glad you think we are doing such a big feat but we are certainly not reinventing the wheel. Honestly it's pretty straight forward developing, that's not intend as a insult either. I've just always learned the more development/support a device has the better. So I hope that sums up why we are going this route instead of slapping a zip together in a sitting that will be a nightmare to try to figure the bugs out on due to the variants in mods and firmware differences each person is running. Now to answer the question about test zip.. We are not including it because it is not yet compiled, we are doing this in sections during the alpha phase and have only been working on the flash portion. Don't worry it will be released very soon after!
I'm kinda glad there's a new way, last time I used the current 2nd init cwm I ended up with a issue with /data not mounting correctly and had to remove the 2nd init over adb, hoping I don't see the same here. This should be interesting, i'm assuming if you are saying that we are flashing a kdz without modifying our hosts file that you made your own version of lg's flashing program? If so that is actually pretty cool in itself.

Hopefully he takes it up. He's a good Dev.
Can you guys find his G+ page? I can't find it. Unless I'm blind...
That would be incredible.
Getting a rom port, that's "the dream".
An official version update would only get us so far, but getting cyanogenmod, that's hyperspace.

oh, this is greeeat, he is a very good dev that fixed many problem in the buggy LG Nitro HD(p930) which is my previous phone.
@tdm, welcome! and hope you can spend some time on this great phone. Thanks!!
PS, from his g+, he is now a CM employee..man..this is exciting news...
Nice to see someone pick up development. For my needs, stock JB4.3 works perfectly, but you have to figure, apps will eventually require
higher than 4.3 to operate, which means those with the HAM2 will be left out.
lalala. I have just had a HAM2 sitting on my desk for a while and to busy to mess with it. LMAO
I have learnt compiling kernel from source code. Of course, there is a lot learning curve for me to bring up MT2L03.
Yeah, that's me, guilty on all counts...
Just got first boot into CM11. Nothing works yet and the screen won't turn back on after it goes off, but hey, it's progress!
That on its own is already immense progress! Thank you very much! :good:

wa, I think that's HUGE progress that booted into cm11 with screen on... and pls count me in if you need any pre-pre-alpha tester
Good to see some time enthusiasm here. Too good if a phone to be passed up by cm. Even if it were just an aosp 4.3. It would be an improvement. Also willing to add to the monetary pool for the other effort.

Pretty much that. I didn't find any useful tutorial, so i had to just try it out and experiment with different commands. There are some linking issues with headers, that i had to make some modifications. On top of that, the ram disk, and device tree stuff had to be extract from original bootimg, I found a tool in here

keep it up guys! this is my most followed thread now lol.

LOL! Same. I picked up another HAM2 just after Christmas because even without any new OS updates it does more than I need with aplumb!
The freebie bluetooth speaker that came with the holiday bundle is a great bonus (that tiny thing is loud and had some bass!)
Seeing development on this phone become active again is like a late present
Kudos developers and I'll join in as a volunteer if needed for testing. I have a spare MT2-L03 Standard unlocked phone for testing and backup.

I know that there is already a thread on their forum asking for support BUT a second livelier thread cant hurt. Go ahead over and vote YES for official support.
PLEASE note that I'm NOT guaranteeing anything. I cant even guarantee that they will respond. But It cant hurt to try right?
Here is the link to go to the thread.

I don't know if it'll help any, but i've voted, would be nice if we had official support. Having official support would make having this phone more bearable until whenever I can get an upgrade, would like to get off of Touchwiz.

You have to understand cm is losing many fans here. If you ask why then just have a look around. The main reason is they merge untested code, enclude bootloader, radios and other stuff that they should not be messing with and have even bricked a bunch of nexus devices. Also you have to keep in mind that many developers have walked away from Samsung devices due to their lieing to devs and the locked down nature of their devices.

Well my best advice would be for someone with the device to dig in and see what they can get going. What you need to find out first is if the bootloader can be unlocked, then finding the kernel source for the device. Without those 2 basic things no one will be able to do anything for the device. If you find them in your favor (wish you all the luck in the world....you will need it with samaung) then the rest is not that hard. Getting device trees up and then syncing up to the source of your choice and boom. You got a rom

To the best of my knowledge the bootloader was never locked. Built before Samsung hated us!
Voted, lets do this, I cant WAIT for a decently running CM port. This phone is utterly AMAZING (its almost a Galaxy S4 but smaller and FAR cheaper) and its a damn shame there isnt enough DEV support yet
