[Q] moving between roms - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello
well I rooted my galaxy s3 and have an aokp rom
Lets say I ll want to move to a different rom not from aokp will I have to do a full wipe meaning in cmw factory reset ? will it erase any trace of the old rom ?
does factory reset delete the sd card if so I ll just put the rom at the ext card

Usually when moving from one rom type (e.g. aokp) to another (e.g. Samsung TW) you always should do a factory wipe, which, and please correct me if I am wrong, also deletes your internal SD.
On my side, I always do a mega wipe moving between ROMs as it gives me a 100% clean slate and my backups (Titanium) are on the external SD anyway.

Its always best to do l full wipe especially coming from a different rom. The sd card will not be deleted unless you tell it to be deleted.
You could try to flash it over your other rom and see if it causes issues but as said its always best to full wipe. You will lose all your apps in a full wipe
tmobile s3 running wicked. I still use a t9 text app so excuse the errors

ok thanks
for now I wont move between roms but I always have a stable rom of two kinds so if something gets wrong and I am on the roads I could flash a stable rom

Using TWRP....

Hi Everbody!
This is my first post, so i apologise if i do something wrong...
Here it is my problem...
Last week i buy a S3 I9300. I flash Sentinel Rom 4.XX. Before that i did make root and did intall TWRP, since is less problematic than Recovery...(in opinion of the developer).
Now comes my problem....
The developer says in their instructions:
5 Factory Reset and wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
6 Format System Partition
Im looking at TWRP at this moment...and i have no doubts about Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache.Ok.
Format System Partition.....now, here it is my big problem. Do i press System? Do i Wipe System?
Or do i press: Internal Storage?
What i want is a FULL Clean of the S3. I really don`t care about backups, programs, since i have all on my PC......i want a ROM clean without any trash from previous room...
I have some experience with flashing, with 3º party softwares, but this room uses a zip file...with is for me more complicated, since i never now if im making a fresh install, or a "mix" of files....
Resuming:
On TWRP, except the SD EXTERNAL where i have some backups, and the ROM.zip, what is the best option do format/Clean ALL internal storage?
And yes i read the tread about 4.2.2 new system of data lost..(wich i still think is to confuse, but that`s another question).
Thank you in advance!:good:
P.S: - I don`t have (or don`t see) the famous /data/media/0.......
Im using at this moment Sentinel 4.50. No problems.

TWRP / wipe cache dalvik system internal sd card and data .

Hi.
Hi didn`t understand your statement. I forget to tell that i also do/did Factory Reset.
I says this because one of the occasions, making this 3 steps, didn`t erase previous files from the previous ROM....
What`s the best opcion to erase internal and SD Card, with exception of external card?
Thks in advance.

CWM - Wipe data\Factory reset - Wiping all data from Internal SD

I've read some other posts where this has caused a certain amount of controversy but no post seemed to actually answer the question..
Using the Wipe data\Factory reset in ClockWorkMod Recovery has started to wipe the ENTIRE device
(excluding the external SD card)
I have flashed dozens of custom ROMs in the past and what normally happens is my external SD card contents remains safe, this still happens, no problem there, and all my personal documents such as music, pictures, videos and all other files that are not part of the actual ROM itself remain safe too.
BUT
Yesterday, i flashed a certain ROM designed to resemble the S4 (with leaked 4.2.2). Its performance was shockingly bad and other reasons caused me to flash a new ROM which i had used in the past - but when i wiped data/factory reset through CWM - ALL MY INTERNAL SD CONTENTS WHERE GONE
Things i did notice with the 4.2.2 ROM before re-flashing were that:
-When i connected it to the computer (via USB) my device was seen as i9500 (the S4)
-Also, it had created a "0\" folderto store the system ROM.
-I also noticed, wehn re-flashing, it took longer to wipe data than usual..
NOTE: I DID NOT USE THE FACTORY RESET THROUGH ANDROID SETTINGS - THIS, I KNOW, WILL WIPE THE ENTIRE INTERNAL SD, PERSONAL FILES AND ALL. THIS WAS DONE THROUGH CWM.
Because obviously the 4.2.2 ROM wiped my entire Internal SD i had no ROM packages left on it to flash and because obviously i didnt know this until i wiped/reset it involved me having to use ODIN to reflash a STOCK ROM just to be able to boot up and transfer files (ROM packages) from PC to phone - which obviously then meant i had to reflash CWM aswell before i could install the new ROM.
Final Note:
The problem i have, is that i have to do the above EVERYTIME i want to flash a different ROM (i flashed 3 last night).
For some reason when i wipe through CWM my internal SD card is COMPLETELY WIPED!
The question is......Why???
Could the 4.2.2 ROM have re-partitioned my internal SD card and now CWM thinks the ENTIRE thing is data to wipe?
This is the only reasoning i could put to why it wont leave MY FILES alone...
If this IS the case, how do i get it back to normal??
I'm told, on numerous websites in BIG BOLD RED LETTERS that selecting 're-partition' in ODIN is bad and is just a ticket for a free paperwieght (the phone!).
Thank you to ANYONE who can help with this......
The clue may be in the 0 folder. Please read link in my signature to see if it helps

Thanks for your help, however the info you suggested does not solve my query..
The info you've provided assumes that the data is stored somewhere else, ie. 0\
Although my device did create a 0\ location when wiping the data, no personal data was in this location.
When i flashed back to stock using Odin, i could see that my phones internal storage was only 1.0-1.5GB used.
Before i started this i only had about 900mb left on my device!
So its not that my data is hiding somewhere.....its gone, and everything on my hones internal storgare is wiped everytime i "wipe data/factory reset" through CWM.

Galaxy s3 internal SD not formatting appropriately

So, while trying to install cyanogenmod in my s3 and after wiping the cache and preforming a factory reset in clockworkmod recovery both music and photo data wasn't removed, tried again but nothing happened! What should I do this is very confusing ?

me too, as a matter of fact i`m now in great trouble because the device won't recognize my ex-sd, cwm won't mount it, there is no way to re flash ROM ( odin doesn't support installing CM ). When i go to setting-> storage the phone simply crashes. so anyone know how to just wipe out everything, make the internal mem back to its original???
Use the cyanogen mod installer

Maybe you can try the Mega wipe script at this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1983489
Use at your own risk, and keep a backup somewhere because it will erase everything ..
Brother,
Only stock recovery gets crazy and erase everything in your internal memory and resets the rom and wipes the app datas …
Custom recovery does't do that it protects your personal data and only wipes app data and resets the rom …
If your issues is with a buggy rom try a different one …
External sd not mounting is an rom issue not with factory reset …
If you want to go back to stock, data wipe isn't going to do it, you will have to download the stock rom from sammobile.com and flash it using Odin …
Ps: get the correct stock rom or you'll brick your phone!!
If I helped hit thanks …
i think the 4.3 stock is the problem... it prevents any cook rom to get access to sd but i'm not sure why this is possible... all i know is i use odin to install stock 4.3 and it works without problem but switching to any rom cook then the sd just simply gets lost...

[Q] Can i delete everything on my phone without roms ?

Hi.
My phone last time get lags and slower. I dont want to try fix it. I want to refresh my phone, delete everything and save only my ROMs ( now downloaded MIUI - want to try and SmartDroid )
I flashed many times and once did hard reset. After hard reset i had option inslall only via ODIN, not from internal memory.
Ho can i delete everything on my phone without roms for fresh install fresh rom from inernal memory? ( i dont have sd card )
Do not delete your efs partition. You will not be able to connect to any network if you do. When you flash a rom you must follow the instructions. Often the instructions include factory reset or clear data, cache and dalvick cache.and system. My advice is dont just go deleting files if you dont know what they are. Flash your roms with clockworkmod but make a nandroid backup before incase you need to go back to your previous rom.

Flashing a Rom Doesnt require Deleting all files from your internal memory.
As you said you want to refresh your phone..... What excatly Does Refresh Mean ???
Deleting All Files From Internal Memory is not a solution To Lags.
Use CWM and do a factory Reset, Cache Wipe & Dalvik Cache Wipe Then Install A new Rom. This Is nothing But Refeshing ur Phone
Factory Reset Wont Wipe Ur Data ....So Roms Stored in The Internal Storage Wont Get Deleted.
There is a Tool Called Zoots Wipe Scripts which are useful to Clean Up Your Phone Give It A Try

If you mean doing a full factory reset, it will not do any modification to the ROM as it is read only memory. It will still be there as it is after the reset as long as you do NOT format the /system partition. Your internal storage (apps, app data, settings..etc) however will be wiped. So make sure you back up any necessary files prior to resetting.
Shouldn't flashing a pit file and then the rom after it help?

[Q] Wiping to install Rom?

Hello everyone,
So im not new to teh whole custom rom scene and whatnot, I had a galaxy Nexus which i raped with ROM Installs .
Anyway I got a new phone, and wanted to install a custom rom on it
However It is required to wipe the phone before installing and the thing is I have alot of valuable pictures on this phone. Now I know i could back them up to the computer, however when I switched from the nexus to the new phone, i backed them up to the computer and then put them on the new phone, some pictures the order got messed up. Like the first picture wasn't the firs tpicture anymore etc..
Also on my Galaxy nexus when I wiped it, my images did not get deleted, they were still there, does wiping not delete all of this?
(Im talking about wiping from Recovery

Most custom recoveries are made to not wipe /data/media (also known as internal storage or what the phone recognizes as /sdcard) unless told to when you go to wipe to install a rom. This can vary by phone/recovery/rom/etc but as a general rule, that's how it works.

Well you can't install CM without a custom recovery. Just make sure it isn't set to wipe the internal storage and all will be fine. You might have to move your stuff into the /sdcard/0 folder after CM is installed if it doesn't do it automatically and you don't see the stuff from internal storage after you get into CM.
