I am always on wifi so I don't need LTE, 4G, HSPA or 3G.... is there any way I can force 2G or edge only on an AT&T locked Galaxy Note i717? I've looked all over the forums and people say go into the menu and select that option, but it doesn't work. Same with apps, don't work. I've read flashing a different modem will enable that option to work, but won't I need an unlocked phone to do so?

Why in the world would you want to do that. Why go to 2G? Why not just turn the data off

Well like I said I'm on wifi all day and don't need LTE killing my battery for no reason. And, so I can still send or receive pictures.
LTE/Data is automatically disabled when you connect to wifi. No need to do anything. It will turn itself on automatically to receive/send mms.

Im guess the op really meant to say how to turn it off when not using wifi?
otherwise, like you guys mentioned, it turns off automatcially when wifi connects
and 2G still exists?

So by forcing 2G I'm not going to see any battery improvement since it's automatically turned off since I'm always on wifi?

I find that very hard to believe since on my iPhone forcing Edge gave me almost 3 times my battery life.

That is Apple's "innovation" for you right there. This is Android. Android turns off cellular data when on wifi and only turns it on when needed for MMS.
You notice how when on wifi you don't see a 4g icon? Send an mms and you will see it pop up long enough for the message to be sent and then disappear.
That is your phone automatically enabling/disabling cellular data when needed/not needed.
Ok, well to get this back on track I'd like to force 2G or even 3G no matter what. Any solution for me?
Dial *#*#4636#*#* and hit phone information. Scroll down and in the drop down list and choose GSM Only. Reboot.

Nope. Even on wifi, say If you're sending or receiving MMS it will use your data (4G or LTE). Also, unless you have it turned on while the phone is asleep, your phone will switch back to 4G for downloading or synchronize data. 2G takes longer to download information because of he slower speed which causes the phone to drain battery because the phone would still be downloading the data.

Well that's your problem bud. You're turning your wife on, not the wifi But on a serious note, this is an intended feature of android. When you turn on wifi it turns off mobile data to save your mobile data. If you dont mind me asking, why do you want your 4G to stay put if you are on wifi?

Sorry. Couldn't resist the auto-correct fail... If you're on wifi, your 4g/3g automatically shuts off. That's normal.

Alright thanks guys. Is there any way to turn this feature off? I want to keep mobile data on because I have really bad service at my house and I am trying to analyse it a bit.
You can just turn wifi off. You can't be connected to 2 data sources at the same time (that isn't an android thing). If wifi is off, you'll connect using 3g/4g instead.

I had a question for you guys using the international on AT&T.
On my GS2 I remember when data was not being used and was idle the signal meter would show 3G and switch to UMTS and when I used the connection it would switch to H/H+ HSPA.
With my GS3 however, it's constantly showing H even when it's idle. It's NEVER really goes into UMTS mode even when it's idle. I've seen it switch to 3G for a split second every now and then, but then switches right back to H in a split second. In my status I see it's using the HSPA network, not UMTS. The times that I saw it switch to 3g for a split second (I happened to have the status open) I saw it switch to UMTS then switch right back to HSPA.
I know switching to UMTS when the connection is idle saves battery life So I'm wondering since mine doesnt switch to UMTS if it's affecting the battery life
I've tried different modems, in network settings it's set to Auto.
So my question (after that wall of text) is does your phone switch the UMTS when it's idle and show 3G? Or is it constantly showing H like mine?
I'm trying to figure out why the hell it wont stay in UMTS when there is no data activity. If it does switch to 3G/UMTS when it's idle anyone have any ideas what could be going on with mine?
anyone? lol

Maybe you guys should try gokhanmorals fast dormancy app from the play store.
And maybe take a look at the thread that was floating around here about proper fast dormancy settings for at&t.
Mine switches from h to 3g as soon as it stops transferring data.

Mine switches to 3G as soon as data is stopped transferring. No problems here. and it will sit on 3G until data kicks in again and picks up to H+

hmm so it also happens to K Rich's phone. Can you do me a favor? from the dialer hit *#0011# what band does it say when it's connected to 3G/UMTS?
I can also get it to stay on 3G constantly by changing a setting in the advanced phone control menu, but then it doesnt switch to HSPA when data is active.

Hey guys,
I'm finding that when my phone is in an area with very poor data and goes to 1x mode that after a few minutes the phone will get very hot and it seems to drink battery like no one's business.
I'm wondering if there's a way to disable 1x at all? It's pretty much useless anyways these days the throughput isn't even enough to really even send / receive emails from my server let alone anything else.
I'm finding myself having to manually disable mobile data when I notice it's occurring (which I don't always). really the only way I notice is why my pocket starts getting warm =)
Thanks!
This also has been happening to me. In school a lot of my classes are in the basement and I get terrible reception.
Turn off Mobile data then?
Poor service and battery use have always gone hand in hand.
Set up a toggle to turn off your data connection at those times? You'll still get texts and phone calls.

I stated that I would do this in my first post but I also stated that I don't always notice it. It sucks to lose 30-50% of your battery life before you realize you're in power drain mode.
Does anyone know if I can just disable the 1X antenna completely (permanently) at all times?
Thanks!
If I'm not mistaken 1x is data roaming, so disabling the roam option in your data settings should eliminate it

I had always thought it was just a poor connection which put you on 1x because the data connection was so slow.

1x is essentially 2g. EVDO is 3g.
You will know you are romaing when your signal bars have a triangle on top of them. That is the only roaming indicator.
When your on 1X your Phone Constantly tries to connect to 3G/LTE your battery ifs drained from your phone trying to connect to 3G

Couldn't find the options you're referring to under "mobile network settings"
you can change roaming mode - but none of these settings seems like it would work.

1x is not roaming. Its a very slow connection due to a poor connection.

The problem is I'm not doing it by choice this is on the stock ROM or any other Sense ROM I've tried (OMJ, Fresh, Stock Rejuv)
New Photon owner.
Struggling with using it on Ting. Ting itself seems great. After changing MIN and MDN, I have WiFi, text, voice and 4g. No 3g however.
I've rooted and debloated. If I use the droidx bootstrap recovery it won't boot and I have to start from a complete sbf restore (198.7). If I unlock the boot loader I lose 4g, so I then have no data, but still have WiFi, text and voice.
Anyone successfully using Ting with 3g?
Aloha.

No reason to unlock no ICS video drivers. I've been on sprint now ting. Non 4g speed is dead slow.
Put stock on my Photon Q for testing, saw 3g icon.
I'll fire up the MoPho and check.

Well, I'd like to change ROMs. Without data, I'm stuck with stock, and the deblur script has broken contacts app.
I'd really like to move to the hybrid ROM, but once installed, if I relock the boot loader it hangs. So no data or no function. I'm looking for any way out of the deadlock.
Aloha.

I haven't used Ting but I activated a Photon on PlatinumTel CDMA by doing a ##72786# network reset.
When the phone restarted after the reset Hands Free Activation ran and it set up 3G, voice and SMS automatically. It should work the same on any Sprint MVNO
You need to be on a stock ROM for Hands Free to run. Once activated you can switch to a different ROM but you will lose WiMAX when you unlock.
Yeah. Stock rom just hangs on connecting to network screen. It's already registered on Ting, so it never connects.
Aloha. Thanks for trying to help. I'm thinking I'll restore to stock and sell it.

update prl & profile
I switched to Ting. The data speeds are slow. But I found that disabling Sprint's proxies and doing periodic prl updates and profile updates greatly improve 3g speed. Yes, I get 3g yet it feels like 2g sometimes. I found my phone seems to lose data all together sometimes and I have to update profile and prl to even get any data. Kinda sucks but spending $40/month on Ting for 2 phones (Note 2 & S3) is way cheaper than spending $160/mon on Sprint. What's nice is I still get to use Sprint's crappy network. lol
I use ting and had the same problems, after the third call to them. I got an email asking me to let them know when I got home. Woke the next morning, to find my phone in the settings menu? and every thing has worked great ever senses. Don't know if they remoted in or not?
