[Q] Padawan or Stock Deodexed_DEBLOAT - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Newbie with i717 Unrooted stock JB. Due to apparent lag issues since updating to JB, I would like to improve performance by installing either Padawan or Stock deodexed_DEBLOAT ROM.
1. What are the differences between the 2 ROMS?
2. Where can I find the detailed steps to follow to install the Padawan ROM?
3. Where can I find the detailed steps to follow to install the deodexed_DEBLOAT ROM?

Go to the development thread. Each rom has instructions on how to flash. GL

I've use the Padawan jb 4.1.2
Its a great ROM. There were still some lag issues that some were experiencing. I did not. Maybe just what you use with it and how. There is also a kernel made just for it allowing over clock(oc) I liked it. Anyway there are a couple other ROMS available. The BlackStar X ( ICS 4.0.4) is a must if you haven't experienced it. Anyway hope this helps a little. Experiment a little....

I flash everything. There is no other way to know what you will like. It's all about how you use the rom. And remember, every phone responds different to different roms, the phone has a mind of its own. I did enjoy the padawan....great rom! Myself, I'm not much into stock roms though....Just have fun! :cyclops:

Stock deodexed debloated is just at&t official JB deodexed and debloate. You can look up the meaning of deodexed and debloated means getting rid of at&t and samsung crap apps.
With Padawan, the dev took the stock rom (probably the deodexed, debloated rom) and made some performance tweaks.
I have used previous versions of Padawan and they have been rock solid and stable. Paired with the custom OC kernel, it may be the best rom option

I have always used Padawan since version 4. Bought my note used, unlocked, rooted, then flashed Padawan.
Never felt the need to try another.

You really never tried any other roms?? That is amazing if it be the case. It is too easy to try the many, many great roms out there, to not do so. IMHO. Backups work wonders so you can go back with little hassle. Just curious.

Thanks to all for your help. i717 is currently UNrooted with stock JB 4.1.2. My plan is to flash either the debloated_deodexed ROM or the Padawan ROM (both of which are pre-rooted) using the following procedure:
1 It is not necessary to Root UNrooted phone before starting this procedure
2 Backup items on internal sd card (phone folder) to external SD or Computer
3 Odin307.zip file - extract 4 files to computer Desktop
4 openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-quincyatt.img.tar file - copy to computer Desktop
5 SGH-I717UCMD3_4.1.2_Stock_Deodexed_DEBLOAT.zipfile or Padawan_JB.zipfile - copy to root of External SD Card
6 Unplug phone and power off
7 Open odin3 v3.07.exe on computer desktop and click pda button
8 In pda dialog, browse to desktop and select openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-quincyatt.img.tar file, which puts link to twrp file in pda entry area
9 Put phone in download mode - hold vol down button and plug in usb cable
10 At warning screen, push vol up to continue and go to downloading mode
11 On desktop computer see connection under ID:COM (blue highlight) if no connection, may need to install drivers. curser should be blinking in phone entry area
12 To flash recovery, click start - recovery takes just a few seconds resulting in green bar at top left and RESET in blue highlight (& later PASS in green highlight?)
13 Phone will auto reboot - unplug phone after reboot starts (music tones)
14 Wait for phone to completely reboot and then power off phone
15 Push and Hold vol up & down and push power button
16 At Samsung logo, release power button
17 At Teamwin display, Release vol up & down
18 Push backup & with Boot, Data and System boxes checked, swipe to backup (2-3 min)
19 At finish, swipe to unlock
20 Don't reboot system, backup to screen with buttons
21 Select wipe button & swipe to factory reset
22 Select Advanced Wipe (may require backup to prev screen) & then select system and then swipe to wipe
23 Press Back button or backup arrow one or more times to screen with buttons and then select Install button
24 Find ROM File on SD Card: SGH-I717UCMD3_4.1.2_Stock_Deodexed_DEBLOAT.zip (or Padawan_JB.zip)
25 Select the ROM File with finger and then swipe to confirm flash.
26 After Flash, the word Successful should be displayed
27 Select reboot system (If TWRP offers to fix SU, select do not fix) and leave alone for 10 minutes after it boots up
28 Go thru setup process. e.g., when Use Google Location screen appears, select FINISH, etc
29 At home screen select Apps Icon - ATT Smart WFI is there but most other att apps & bloatware are gone. SuperSU is also there
Two Questions:
1. Does my phone have to be rooted BEFORE I begin the above procedure? (Update - not necessary to Root)
2. Are there any apparent errors in the above procedure?

No your phone does not have to be rooted to do all of this. That is by far the BEST and informative procedure I've read. The only thing that is not included in the list is downloading the custom pre-rooted rom onto the sdcard.

I ran padawan but now I'm running debloated. Some reason it runs smoother on my phone
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app

I have tried few other ROM before Padawan, but I like the stability of Padawan.
I am now running Telus official JB and debloated it myself. Padawan JB is AT&T based, and it is missing few things that I am looking for, but Telus has them.
I am just wishing ptmr will do a new version of Nebula, which is like Padawan, but based on Telus.

4.1.2 ends up getting laggy and extremely slow for me...clearing cache and such helps but always goes back ... I've flashed all of them .....4.2.2 is smoother on my device

[Q] Download Mode: VolDn + CntrSlct + CallEnd Doesn't Work ?? - GT-I5500M

EDIT: "adb reboot download" did it, Thanks to ionutz1122 at madteam.co !
I can't get my Canadian GT-I5500M into download mode ! All it does is power up into the stock Android 2.1...
I tried with and without charger PC connection. I tried with and without SIM. I tried after pulling battery for several minutes.
I do this:
(1) Press and hold Volume Down for 1-20 seconds. (On left underneath Volume Up)
(2) Press and hold Center Select for 1-20 seconds. (The Black part inside the silver ring)
(3) Press and hold Power / Call End. (Button at lowest right)
At this point I am holding 3 buttons simultaneously and haven't slipped, let go or touched any other button.
4 seconds after (3) I see "SAMSUNG".
8 seconds after (3) I see "GT-I5500M".
16 seconds after (3) I see the Samsung Galaxy/Stars graphic and the phone is on it's way to a normal bootup.
The only notable permanent changes I made from stock were to manually install some su utilities and SuperUser.apk. So the system partition was briefly read-write for this.
I believe some other Canadians have installed CWM etc successfully from the one single Android 2.1 ROM for Canada.
Am I doing something wrong or is this device/ROM protected somehow ?
Thanks !
Problem solved: http://www.madteam.co/forum/support...end-doesn't-work-gt-i5500m/msg22263/#msg22263

I think Bell/Virgin Mobile must have modified the bootloader to prevent download mode. Now that CWM is installed, I can get to the download mode using the 3 button salute with no problem. But with the original, I couldn't get to it despite trying many different ways.
With the original I was able to get to download mode using the "adb reboot download" command ionutz1122 recommended.

i have same phone as u and have tried out every rom out there. id have to say madteams newest is the most reliable. Did you happen to use nandroid to backup your stock firmware first. this Canadian stock firnware is the only 1 in the world NOT on the net. have been looking for months.

Yes, I backed up everything CWM could. That doesn't include the baseband.
I up'd the baseband to JP2 and now I can't access voice or data. I can't see Bell, can only see Rogers.

[Q] [Question] Galaxy S4 Developer Edition Question

Hey guys,
I am rocking the DNA but while working on my car yesterday, I shattered the front of my phone to the point where there are so many cracks that I can't see anything. So I am looking around for other options and one that I am considering is the Galaxy S4 Developer Edition for Verizon Wireless. I want a phone (on VZW) that I can unlock, root and run CM10.1/10.2 or AOSPA on and the normal S4 isn't quite there yet. So I had a couple of questions to people who have the Dev Edition,
1) I found a thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2339849) that details how to root/unlock the developer edition, is that method still valid to follow?
2) What is the process to flash a non-TW ROM on the dev edition like CM10.1 or something? For anyone who's running CM/AOSPA on an S4 dev edition, how well does it work?
3) This would be my first Samsung smartphone and I see a lot of Samsung specific lingo that I don't quite understand, is there a central place that I can find that information other than El Goog?
Thanks,
Developers Edition I though came unlocked...its base Jelly Bean Android..no TouchWiz UI.

I am pretty sure that the dev editions come with touchwiz and just as much bloat. I think you might be thinking of the GPE maybe? I might be wrong, don't have near enough money to get it so I wouldn't know for a while.

dev edition comes with an unlocked bootloader, but is still tw. there is a root method, and it can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2381382
as for cm/aosp roms, i can't help you there since i stick with the tw-based roms like hyperdrive, which is my dd. here is the cm thread for the s4 though: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2305263
i am not a developer, and i know just enough about computers to be dangerous to myself. however, i have learned a lot just be reading different threads, and anything i didn't understand or couldn't figure out i just googled it.
good luck!

I am a Dev S4 owner and I can tell you that the root and ROM methods are extremely easy. The only thing is that we do not have any factory images to fall back to (as a safety net in case you screw something up) - but once you become versed and more advanced, check out this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2483619) which is a compilation of stock images for the various partitions of the Dev S4 on I545OYUAMDK (boot, recovery, system, etc - you will need Heimdall to flash these). So first thing of order once a custom recovery is installed is to do a full Nandroid Backup. That will serve as your safety net.
The phone comes bootloader unlocked. First thing would be download the latest samsung USB drivers (http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SCH-I545ZKAVZW - then scroll down and choose the downloads tab. download the EXE and install). In order to root the phone, the easiest way would be to reboot the phone into download mode (volume down+power, you will see a warning, press volume up to enter download mode). Once in download mode connect the phone to your PC. Download Odin 3.07 or Odin 3.09 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189539) along with either Philz Touch Recovery IMG (http://d-h.st/users/philz_touch/?fld_id=18376#files - you want the latest jfltevzw.tar.md5 file, 5.18.2 (http://d-h.st/HZD)) for a clockworkmod based recovery or TeamWin's TWRP recovery (http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/181 - done through Goo Manager on the app store). Once Odin is loaded and your phone is recognized (you will see it listed on a comm port under the text that says "ID:COM", make sure ONLY "Auto Reboot and "F. Reset Time" are checked....everything else must be unchecked! Very important (double check and recheck, especially that Re-Partition is UNchecked)! Load your recovery tar.md5 file into the PDA slot on the right (actually middle of the window). Once loaded and your phone is recognized and you have made sure the two boxes are the only ones checked, hit the Start button.
If all goes well, your phone will reboot and you will see the word "pass" in green in the upper left above the ID:COM field. Test your custom recovery by booting into it. To enter recovery power of your phone. Then hold down "Volume Up" + The Home Button and the Power button all at once. Once you feel the phone vibrate, let go of the Power button but keep the Volume up and home button pressed, you will see small blue text in the upper left corner of the phone and you will soon be in recovery. Once in recovery make a nandroid backup, preferably your external sdcard. Once done, reboot the phone to TouchWiz.
In the meantime, download the latest SuperSu package (http://download.chainfire.eu/351/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip?retrieve_file=1) and put it on your External SD Card. Once done, power off your phone. Again, to enter recovery hold down "Volume Up + The Home Button and the Power button. Once you feel the phone vibrate, let go of the Power button but keep the Volume up and home button pressed, you will see small blue text in the upper left corner of the phone and you will soon be in recovery. Once in recovery choose "Install Zip" and select sdcard1 (or external card) and then selct the Supersu zip and proceed to flash. Reboot your phone and you should have full root and custom recovery.

I have the Verizon Developer Edition S4. It comes with an unlocked bootloader (no action on your part required). To root you just place the SuperSU (or other su) on your external sd card and flash. There is another way to root, but you loose your stock kernel in the process...not recommended. Custom recoveries vary, but PHilZ and TWRP 2.5.0.2 are the most commonly used. TWRP seems to be the most preferred and most successful when flashing AOSP ROMS...that's just my experience. The phone will come with MDK system etc. And yes, the stock ROM is TW and all the bloat you get with a retail version is there also.

Recent button doesn't work after lollipop update?

Hi guys,
i updated my galaxy alpha to lollipop but i found a little big problem: recent button doen's work anymore. It doens't even light when pressed. I read some threads here on xda about people experiencing this issue and i decided to open a new thread to try to fix this kind of problem.
As first "fix" i found helpful enable the super sensitive touch.
And you guys?
if u a using the G850f model, try to backup your data. Then do a complete data and cache wipe (hard reset) then install a clean lolipop update and see if it will work.

Yup you are right - however my phone is cool but still no left key. if i put it in the fridge then it works for a few mins.
on 4.4 never had this issue.
xef personal conclusion
hy, im from romania and flashed in odin the xef lollipop last night
till now no problem, works like a charm, slightly more performant than kk and more battery saver, recent app button works, im happy, so far no issues! ...finger cross....
fore the ones with issues try to update like me, with odin in these steps:
!!! charge phone battery to 100% with wall plug and make sure your phone is a free carrier type - the SM-G850F. download the france lollipop xef from samsung firmware site and download odin 3.10 from same place. unpack odin to a folder and then unpack the firmware downloaded to same odin folder.
1. backup to pc, cloud, etc. all you need - optional, but dont cry after for loosing your naked girl pics
2. shut down phone and make a factory reset - enter with volum up+home+power
DO NOT RESET THE CACHE - ONLY RESET DATA/FACTORY RESET
3. start odin and after this restart from earlier bootloader, let the phone start normally like after every normal reset but when ask for setup (first window screen where asks for language, accessibility, etc) dont begin anything and shut down the phone - press power and choose shutdown
4. start phone in download mode with vol. down+home+power and when in, select continue, a window with odin mode will appear
5. now connect phone to pc and in odin should appear as recognised, the square become blue and shows the com port number
6. in odin select the AP button and choose the firmware unpacked, unzipped, with the .md5 at the end of the name
7. make sure the RE-PARTITION checkhole is unchecked and the freset time and autorestart are checked, and hit start to begin flash
8. be patient and wait to finnish, it has several steps like copying (a blue line in download mode), restarting and upgrading/deleting things, restarting again and showing the galaxy alpha logo - DO NOT TOUCH IT, LET THE PHONE TO FINNISH, and after few minutes the amazing setup window appear !
9. disconnect the phone from computer, close odin, and shut down the phone!
10. start the phone in bootloader with vol. up+home+power and make a factory reset/wipe data but do not delete/reset the cache after, just data/factory reset
11. restart phone and enjoy your lollipop
if all this is made like i said then you should encounter no issues!
give feedback for help or if issues appear!

Mine also not working when phone is high temperature. Try cooling it down
I have updated to lollipop without any reset.
Have not found any bugs jet.
I was wondering maybe it has something to do with the region your phone comes from, according to the recent button not working?
I had the same problem, and I did this:
Went to Chrome - Settings - Combine Tabs and Apps. I deactivated the option, and by mistake, hit the back button, and started working.
Eventhough the option is Deactivated, when I press the left button, I can see Chorme's tabs wtithin the Recents Apps.
After that had to install and app from Google Play, and after doing so, the button stoped working again. I restarted de phone, and 20 minutes later, the button started working. I have no clue of what's going on.

Still doesn't work.
I always do factory reset, dalvic & cash & than flash new rom, ater instalig it I wipe dalvic again .
All working ,except in new Eudemony V4(5.0.2) deodex break recovery & stack on EULA Data conection.
possible solution - NONE, till region versions come out
i start to believe more and more that this issue has to do with region scrambling software glitches - scientifically said
probably some regions are compatible and some aren't
I tried to change the settings in display settings by increasing the sensitivity and it works. Eureka!:victory:
Try it for yourself.. go to settings under display.
Same issue will it work with other 5.x roms?
I have the same issue. I have not rooted this phone yet. I sent it back to Virgin and they downgraded it back to 4.4.4 then sent it back "fixed". Since I got no feedback I thought it must have been an issue during the update. So I updated again and Recent apps is still not working. I am using an app that brings up the menu for now. I am hoping that 5.1 will fix this issue anyone know the odds on that? Also I am willing to root and loose warranty IF it will work under a custom Rom (or will it not because the ROM would be based on 5.0.1?) Is downgrading pretty risky? I have only rooted with my nexus 4 and moto G and only ran Cyangenmod. so I am not sure of the risks of downgrading. (I remember it being risky in my iphone days). Any thoughts or suggestions?

Can't install recovery after Stagefright update

My Rogers S6 edge W8 got an OTA OG2 yesturday so I went back to stock to get the new update. Now I want to root back but somehow the previous method of installing TWRP in odin, then flash SU and nosleep fix just doesnt work...actually only the recovery doesnt want to install. Odin tells me everything was a success, the phone seems to have installed TWRP but when I boot into recovery, it goes back to stock again.
Any ideas what could have gone wrong?
Also please dont suggest usuing CF-Auto root because it brick my phone every single time.
Here are the instructions I followed, the first time the process went without a hitch.
1. Download ODIN v 3.10.6 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2711451 and extract it to a folder.
2. Download TWRP v2 by eousphoros (Odin Flashable Version) from https://mega.co.nz/#!aQhTnQRR!k-M-j9...swZO3CWYi0mMtI
3. Download the latest SuperSu Beta from http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps...v2-05-t2868133 and transfer it to your internal storage on the phone.
4. Download Deep-Sleep flashable fix from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...7&postcount=56 and transfer it ot your internal storage on the phone.
5. Put your phone into Download Mode. Power Off, then hold Power+Home+VolDown. At the warning press VolUp to continue.
6. Connect your phone to your computer via the USB cable.
7. Launch ODIN.
8. You will see the text Added! in the status panel (left side).
9. Checkmark the box beside AP and then click on AP.
10. Browse to the TWRP tar.md5 file you downloaded earlier and select it.
11. Wait a few seconds for MD5 check to finish successfully.
12. Press Start. You will see the progress bar at the top and when it's complete status window will have message "All Threads Complete (Succeed 1, Failed 0)".
13. Boot into TWRP (Button combination Power+Home+VolUp) and then flash/sideload SuperSu beta zip and then the deep sleep fix zip that you have on internal storage.
14. Reboot to system. Congratulations, your phone is now rooted.

Did you uncheck Auto Reboot when you flash the recovery in Odin?
There is no such option with the newer odin
Sent from my SM-G925W8 using Tapatalk
I have heard that this update also breaks ping-pong root. We'll have to wait and see if those are updated
Ok, i found a fix. The problem was when i flashed recovery with odin, the custom recovery was overwritten as soon as the phone would boot back to system. I was able to keep TWRP installed by pressing Volume Up + Power + Home the second the recovery installation was finished and kept holding until Samsung Galaxy S6 edge logo appeared, then it booted me right in TWRP where I was able to flash SU and Sleep Fix.
I am using 3.10.6 and it has the option on one of the tabs on the left side. Yea, that's what I meant not to let it auto reboot. Reboot by holding Volume Down + Power + Home. When the screen goes back, hold Volume Up + Power + Home to boot into Recovery.

[Guide/tutorial] Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime VELTE/G531F from stock to custom ROM
[Guide/tutorial] Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime VELTE/G531F/grandprimevelte from stock to custom ROM
This detailed step-by-step guide helps you transform your Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime VE/LTE/531F to a powerful one with a custom Android 5.1.1.
Make sure your phone is SM-G531F before going further : in Android, go to Settings -> About -> Check model is G-531F.
AND note down the baseband version in a safe place (in case of device brick) : G531FXXU1APG2 in my case.
If not, quit this tutorial.
### Phone is reset and you can't access Android ? Shutdown phone, start in Recovery Mode (Hold Power + Home + Volume+) until you see Samsung logo and release buttons.
### In the recovery, on the 2nd line, look at the right part of the string after the . : G531FXXU1APG2 in my case, the first letters show G531F. It's good.
### AND note down the baseband version in a safe place (in case of device brick) : G531FXXU1APG2 in my case.
### If it is another model, quit this tutorial.

Go to SamMobile.com and create an account (Join button): https://www.sammobile.com/join/
Select the FREE join, complete registration.
Confirm registration by clicking on the verification email.
Now visite this page : https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-grand-prime/SM-G531F/
Select your corresponding country.
Now there are many versions for your country : look in the PDA column for the ones corresponding to your Baseband version you noted earlier (G531FXXU1APG2 in my case).
Preferably chose the one independant from a telecom operator, click on this line.
Then download the firmware, it's huge so be patient.
You then have a zip file on your PC. Unzip it 1 time (using 7-zip or other tool) to keep the file named like : G531FXXU1APG2_G531FOXX1APG2_G531FXXU1APG2_HOME.tar.md5
Start phone in recovery mode again, connect it to PC and Launch Odin.exe.
In AP, set this brand new ".tar.md5".
Wait for Odin to control md5 signature.
Then flash it. Be patient, all the partitions of the phone are being reset.
When Odin green success message appears, disconnect from PC, shut phone down by holding Power + Home + Volume-.
Now start phone in Download mode right away, FRP Lock line should be OFF.
Go back to step 3) at this line : "Connect phone in USB, wait for bootloader drivers installation.".
4) FLASH CUSTOM ROM
Start phone in recovery mode
TWRP is launching and reboots.
Check never show this screen during boot again and Swipe to Allow Modifications on first TWRP launch.
Go to Wipe menu -> Advanced Wipe : check Dalvik/ ART Cache, cache, system, Data and Internal Storage partitions.
Then Swipe to Wipe and wait for operations pending.
Go back to TWRP Home menu. Then tap on Install -> choose CSR*.zip
### If you don't see the files, tap on Select Storage and make sure Micro SDCard is active
then Swipe to confirm Flash.
Wait for operation to end.
Then tap Wipe cache/dalvik, swipe to confirm,
then Reboot System.
Wait for the phone to boot during 10 minutes.
5) ROOT ACCESS
The ROM has SuperSU preinstalled so no extra work to do.
6) CALIBRATE BATTERY
In Google Play Store, download App Battery Calibration (from IMobS Ltd).
Launch the App.
Confirm root acces.
Plug tab and wait till charge hits 100%, then hit BATTERY CALIBRATION and unplug it.
You can use GPS Status & Toolbox app for faster GPS fix.
7) OBTAIN GOOGLE MOBILE SERVICES (GMS) CERTIFICATION
Google now restricts Google Play and Google apps access to certificated devices. Since you have a custom ROM, you are banned.
We now need to subscribe for the Google Play Certification.
In Android, go to Settings -> Security and activate the Unknow sources
Now use the built in File explorer app to install the deviceID app from you microSD card.
Install it, launch it.
Tap on the Google Service Framework (GSF) line, then tap on the COPY button.
In your Android webbrowser, go to : https://www.google.com/android/uncertified/
Connect to Google using your Google/Android account.
In the input field of the page, paste the 16 digits code.
Click on the Save button, a success message confirms your device is Certified.
Do I need to re-certify it ?
"Your device’s GSF ID is reset every time your device is factory reset (or when you wipe the GSF app itself) since it is stored in your data partition, so you must re-register your GSF ID every time you perform either of these actions."
More info here : https://lineageos.org/Google-Play-Certification/
Enjoy,

Hi,
Sincerely I didn't try to access recovery again.
At least you can log to a phone where you don't know the original owner.
Sorry for that.
Looked up for newer packages for 531f.
This tutorial is up to date.

Oooooops.
LineaOS 13 is available but marked as unstable : https://forum.xda-developers.com/grand-prime/development/lineageos-13-0-grand-prime-velte-t3874411
However users say it is pretty stable for a daily usage.
Read carefully the manual.
