The custom unlocked on reboot thread - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I just picked up this phone today. And just rebooted and it said custom unlocked. I've seen another person say this too. However I'm wondering if anyone knows why. I don't plan on rooting till I can unlock the bootloader too and more custom roms come out.

No idea. I have the same image as well. I rooted though.

Also noticed it says custom in device status however I'm bone stock besides developers options toggled on.

So you picked it up from Verizon that way? If so boot in to download mode (power on holding the volume down button, then press volume up) and see if Write protection is Enabled. You'll have to pull the batter to get out of download mode.

Update I checked it again now and haven't rebooted or done anything still. And now it says official. This is so weird... I'm not the first to see this either. Maybe the device is randomly unlocking and locking the bootloader. Cuz I rebooted like four total times. And once it said unlocked custom. And checked status a couple times and it's always official but that one time. Previous post. I just picked up the phone today. Haven't rooted yet either. I don't wanna root until bootloader and roms and everything are set to go. I hate stock but it is what it is for now.

Up this still makes no sense what if I need to bring to Verizon I'm bone stock and it sometimes says custom on reboot and in device status as well. Both change. I know I'm not the only one. And I'm not rooted or anything. Bone bone stock... Should I return?..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

No I'm not bs. I've had it say custom unlocked on rebooting once out of like the four times total. And this will say original or custom randomly certain times of the day? Like the phone unlocks the bootloader and relocks at different hours?

That's bs, take it back........Even if you plan to unlock the boot loader down the road, you don't need to be dealing with the inconsistency of the stock boot loader locking and unlocking itself when it feels like it.

I saw another person with the same issue but I think was rooted I've had it for a day. I don't want to return it if other people have the same issue. I need more feedback.

I have had this issue as well. Mine was related to flashing a debloated rom after rooting. I ended up getting a new phone from verizon, just acted like I had no idea what was going on.

Has your new phone had any issues yet. Any signs of it. Should I try and exchange?

Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

Seeing how there are a few people with this issue and probably people that have it and don't even know. This may be just a software bug which is why I'm hesitating to exchange and get a phone worse off.

If your running any aftermarket kernels or kernel mod apps and have the "set on boot" active, it will trigger the custom logo.

A couple of questions about s-off

So i havent rooted my phone yet and i updated the phone with the recent OTA update. Does this mean that I cannot currently get s-off. If so, are there anyways to remove the update? Also, if i had s-off but I had to return the device to verizon for a replacement, would I be able to completely bring the phone back to stock (stock rom and have it say "locked" as opposed to "re-locked"). Does verizon even care if you send back a device that says "re-locked"?

If you've taken the ota you can not get supercid which prevents you from unlocking which prevents you from getting s off.

Devs are working on a root for the people who updated, and you can change your device to say locked after you s-off i think...
You can change it back to LOCKED(not RELOCKED). The bootloader still says s-off though.

Help with Stock Restore

I'll be the first to say it...
I screwed up my phone entirely and I know. But that's neither here nor there at this point.
I'm really just hoping for some serious help at this point.
Thanks in advance.
I was stock ll4 baseband and attempted to run “one click"casual to root/unlock/recovery.
Somehow during this process my phone managed to root but failed to unlock or install custom recovery.
I made it back to home screen and checked for root status to verify.
This is where the bonehead mistakes come in
I then tried to install twrp manually thinking the bootloader possibly unlocked during casual. But it did not.
After trying to boot into recoveryi get a notification that I am running custom software and to return my device immediately to Verizon.
I can't get back to home screen either same message.
I attempted to revert to stock several times using droidstyle method and Odin keeps coming at sboot.bin.
Does anyone out there no wtf I did to my phone?
Please help. Thank you

Unroot for warranty

Ok guys, I've looked everywhere so don't flame me please, lol. My wife needs to return her phone cuz it won't hardly charge. How do I get back to stock? Meaning, where do I find the stock Rom, how do i do it etc. Thanks in advance for the help.

Even if the phone is rooted. If it's an actual charger port issue then Tmobile would replace it anyways. I think. But first return to STOCK by flashing the RUU. (I would give you a link but I'm sure you will find it faster on your computer then I would on my phone).
I'm never too sure though. I think there is a way to change the bootloader to-day "LOCKED" but idk what it was.

Hey have you flashed correct RUU.??
Bcoz many people tried it and it is worked for them very well..
Try again.
No issue of relocked.
Bcoz relock status will be shown if you lock your bootloader through oem lock process.
Try to follow next step...

Warning

I have been reading thorough the returning to stock post in lg general Dev. A lot of people are softbricking or bootlooping by flashing OTA an edited recovery.
Before you flash any OTA you must return to stock.
Just a word of warning. If I'm misinformed someone please correct me but that's what I got from reading.
Sent from my LG-LS980 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I'm sure anyone that would be looking in the development threads would be looking for development so they might pass over this thread. In turn they will end up 'softbricking' their device because they didn't return to stock before hand.
You should have posted this is the correct place.
Now everyone's phones are going to be messed up.

if you can get in recovery, you are fine. Just have to clear some files and it will boot fine. It's "soft bricked" because it keeps trying to apply the OTA.
Sprint has an OTA?

If you have a nandroid backup, you should restore it. As soon as you restore it, you should flash back to stock. Then after your phone is clean, take the OTA and then root.

I'm not sure I've just seen lg in general has had updates being pushed.
However if we are on stock rooted ROM, shouldn't we be able to push the OTA? I'm not that versed in this.

Safe thing to do is to always flash back to stock to avoid any issues.
EDIT: Don't quote me on this but according to a Sprint G2 user in the thread below that if you have the stock recovery and didn't flash TWRP, you should be able to take the OTA without having to flash back to stock.

Yup on stock recovery right now . Gonna hold off tho because I've been reading that someone is making an update we can flash over top with TWRP. I'll just figure out what I want to do once everything is clear and settled. I'd love some better/stronger signal.

Good Info
Thanks for the post. I myself was applying the software downloads for my D800 At&t Variant. I am currently stuck right now and your explanation helps make a little sense of what is happening to my phone. I was stuck at the cm boot animation and tried to do a wipe and restore and a bunch of other stuff and nothing was working. Decided to flash back using the software from that thread, however the flash was listed as successful, but upon getting to the main screen of the os, keyboard doesn't come up, no signal or wifi, then after a minute or two the phone will just reboot. My thoughts are either that I have the OTA software missing key components from the original stock, or my efs is shot, in which case I am concerned. Just got this phone and would love to fix it. I will hunt for original software.
I had done a full lg stock backup through CWM and then exported that to my computer. Would that contain my efs info?
Thanks

Bought used, rooted S4. Am I unlocked?

Before I get people in here looking to "flame a noob", please leave me alone if that is your intention. If you genuinely are a helpful person, please read on.
I came from an unlocked s3 before I purchased a phone from Swappa and it is rooted and works fine. However, it has a pink theme and I am not into it. Additionally, I want to upgrade the rom if possible.
The issue is that I don't know if I need safestrap or of it has an unlocked bootloader. The reason why is from what I have read, the mj7 baseband is locked down. However, the phone seems to be running a custom kernel, which from what I have read is not possible on a locked down version. Is it possible that the baseband is just the one used by the custom rom?
Is there a definitive way to know if I can install roms without safestrap?
Thanks for your help!

Install phone info app from play store. If you don't see any reference to mdk...then you have a locked bootloader and can only use safestrap
sent by safestrap powered echo v26
I'm no pro, but I think having that kernel means that you have a mdk phone. I guess you should still check with "samsung phone info" and take a look at the bootloader part. You might be a lucky man
You rock. I installed the app and found this. It seems that I have the MDK bootloader. Perfect.
