Can't upgrade to JB - AT&T LG Optimus G

Hi, I want to upgrade my brother's Optimus G to Jelly Bean, so he can flash ROMs that require you to be on JB. He's rooted on ICS. I recently attempted to upgrade. I was sure that the OG won't let you upgrade with missing system files, so I restored the default boot animation, and "host files" through AdAway. Then, I protected root with OTA root keeper, and started the update. It gave an error and failed at 3%. There were no other system files modified or removed. Is there anything else that could be causing this?

Possibly a bad download. Might check the MD5 hash/checksum and possibly redownload the ROM. You said you were using ad away and had some stuff hid...did you restore everything? Try uninstalling that program and following the wipe instructions for the ROM.

A bad download of the OTA, you mean?

If your main goal is to flash roms, why not just use the teenybin and then flash a JB Rom of your choice.

Yes, ROMs such as Shelnutt2's CM10.1, which require you to be on JB.
What is "teenybin"?

It flashes the partition that is needed to flash JB Roms.

You shouldn't have any issues with teenybin at all.
Teenybin is just what its namer implies a small .bin file (so to speak) that pushes what you need on the phone and fixes issues. Go to that thread and get LGNPST as well. Directions are there bud.

It wont install on there at all and I found ways of forcing apps onto a phone through /system/apps but you have to be rooted to do it and its not my phone I'm needing to do this on so cant root it
It depends on the app

Maybe not, but there's a chance. He'll have to manually install it as a system app though...
Even if he doesn't get it to work, he can always just extract the wallpapers from the apk.
I'll write your next thread title for you.

New to Rezound couple questions about recovery, ota ics

Hi guys and gals. I just received a good deal on an HTC Rezound. (Love that phone btw) I got it from a guy that already had s-off and locked boot loader. Which from what I read is a good thing. I am wanting to out it to stock.
So I downloaded the stock recovery ph98img.zip (think that's what it's called) ran it, says update successful I reboot the phone and it comes up with a 7.11 mb ota to prepare for ics. I take that ota its gets to the stock recovery goes about 1/4 of the way thru the green process bar and stops and a red triangle comes up and fails I have to do a battery pull.
I am just wondering what I'm doing wrong. I don't have a PC at the moment. So I'm kind of at a loss.
I know the importance of reading before asking so believe me I did lots of reading. But if i did miss something please let me know.
I appreciate anything anyone can offer to help!!

[Question] Rooting

Just wondering if the Thunderbolt had to be activated before rooting or not.
Anyone know?
I plan on rooting one for my mother in law but she hasn't activated it yet for service.
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
Mine was rooted when I activated it. I ended up unrooting because there were problems with my activation unrelated to being rooted. Just makes sure you're on the latest firmware first.

No problem. The reason you should stick with the stock ruu is because if they need software info it will match. I doubt they will hut you never know.

Yea. I remember on the Eris it wasn't possible to activate on anything but a stock rom. On this I'm not to sure so I would go with a sense 2.1 for sure.

I can say if you have verizon you might wanna wait on rooting even if you root but have a stock rom because i sat in their store over an hour and a half one day setting up a new sim card with a samsung stratosphere i rooted and it had the tweaked rom and stock rom and had to unroot cuz their computer couldnt connect to device right and finally after 8 new simcards i just unrooted used my backup of original factory firmware i took before flashing customized stock rom.... I know im a lil late on this but my advice is root it after its been activated...save yourself hassle and embarrassment knowing they are not supposed to help you when your device is rooted...

This is the reason I never go in the store. I've never had a problem activating a rooted phone. That is why I always suggest going back to a stock firmware though because cm roms and other aosp roms have trouble activating most of the time.

Stock ota update deferred

I deferred the update until 2/25 the latest it would allow me to put it off. I eventually want to root and use a custom Rom I am coming from the Motorola droid x2 and CM7 and know nothing about HTC phones. Should I let the update go through or is there something I should do to stop it?

Do not allow the OTA to go thru. Root your phone and install the Mod by Justin (nitsuj) to get rid of the ota notification. If you want to root and not change your stock DNA it is possible. Then you can flash the custom rom of your choice later. My advice is to read up on all roms and kernels. How-to's before you root and make your decision on the best route to go. If you need help look for a RD/RC (Recognized Dev/Contributor) and some one will be happy to assist you. Or you can always post openly in the Q&A sections.

Trips your flash counter! Also a higher risk of bricks if the ROM builder goofed up.

Long as it is a completely stock image it won't. I don't think the route 66 version does either
Won't brick your device long as it is a .tar.md5 file or you make sure MD5 matches. Should be a tar.md5 file though.
