[Q] Cant install non market apps - AT&T HTC One (M7)

I've checked allow unknown sources and it will even pull up the install screen but I can not click on install it doesn't do anything. Just allows me to hit cancel and that's it.
Any ideas?

some problem happen to your app

I have this same issue.. I cant install apps from Amazon..or sideload apps...and my Unknown Sources is checked as well. Most people seem to fix it by disabling ScreenFilter. I guess its an app that has something to do with the screen brightness. So if you have any app that mess with the screen brightness, disable that first and see if it works
I dont have this app installed so I am at a loss as well. I went thru all my apps to see if I have anything that might create and overlay and I didnt see anything on my device that would prevent it..
Found out the app that was doing it for me..it was Soft Buttons Light..and app on the Market that allows the capacitive keys to stay lit!! I uninstalled this, and was able to install things again. In the permissions it said "Allows the app to draw on top of other applications or parts of the user interface. They may interfere with your use of the interface in any application, or change what you think you are seeing in other applications."..Your best bet is to look thru all your apps, and find out which ones have the permission for system wide alerts..and disable those!

[Q] How do I find out what is using the GPS?

I noticed that whenever I'm on WIFI, the GPS icon would come on and blink for a few seconds then go away. It would keep doing this every 3 seconds on the dot.
On 3G, it would not happen.
On stock KG1 ROM, rooted. I have the Widget Locker and the touchscreenfix.
How do I find out what app or process is using the GPS? I even used the Samsung Task Manager to kill all the apps and cleared the memory. I also rebooted. Whatever it is, it simms to start up when the OS starts. Looking at autostarts, there are too many apps listed in the"after start up" category to pin point the offending app.
I think I found the problem. It was the AT&T Mark the Spot app.
I noticed the GPS also comes on when I change charge/discharge state, as well as network state changes. I looked at Autostarts to see what do these have in common, and out of all the other apps, this one is more likely the culprit.
I'd still wish for a way to find out what process is using what resources. Currently, there is no app for that.

There is this app (if your rooted that is), I have it as it allows me to prohibit some permissions of certain apps. Also in a sense enhances security. If you found this helpful don't forget the thanks button (as im trying to build that up! lol).
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lbe.security&hl=en
additionally for security there is also: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lookout&hl=en
EDIT: LBE lets you know what is using what or what potentially can.

Thanks, but that's not what I'm looking for. I don't want to prevent the app from accessing GPS, which looks like what those apps you mention can do. I just want to know for future reference if I can find out what app is using what resources.
For example, if I see the GPS keep coming on again even though there isn't anything apparently running, I'd like to know which app or process is using the GPS.

[Q] What does 'freezing' an app exactly mean?

Hi,
what does it mean technically if an app is "freezed"? Is the APK moved to another location, or are the unix access rights altered, or is a reference to the app deleted from some kind of "registry" of the Android system, or what else? Can it be done manually by a file manager?
Thanks,
Stefan
It can be done using the purchased version of Titanium Backup and probably a few other apps. It basically renders the app inactive without uninstalling it. Helpful for bloatware that runs in the background but you can't decide if you want to delete it or not.
Thanks, but this was not my question...

Most freezing apps simply rename the app to be frozen with an extension, like in the case of Bloat Freezer (IMHO the best one) the frozen app gets a .bzw extension. It remains in place but of course cannot be executed. The nice part is that if you run into an issue you can just rename the app back to what it was (assuming that you have root).
It works!

Cool, so simple - thanks! So it can be done with any file manager.
I've just successfully frozen the preinstalled "LGWorld.apk" by renaming it to "LGWorld.apk.bak". As soon as I had done this, a message popped up, saying "Deinstalled", and the icon disappeared from the app drawer, and also the update for "LG World" vanished from the Market app.
Hmm.. freezing doesn't mean rename. It is being remove from system. If.you rename yourself, the apps may failed to work.

Freezing the app works via decreasing the temperature of the app to roughly 50 Kelvin. At this point the the app's molecular structure becomes a super condensed crystal lattice. Due to the nature of the crystal lattice, android treats the super dense app as non existent. Essentially the app is deleted from your system completely. However, think of it not as a permanent deletion but rather a reversible one. Should you chose to 'restore' the app, you can defrost the app. You could defrost the app using a microwave but I for one use TB Pro as it does a far better job.

Manufacturers and carriers often load Android phones with their own apps. If you don’t use them, they just clutter your system and sometimes in the background, draining resources. Take control of your device and stop the bloatware.
We’ll be focusing on disabling – also known as “freezing” bloatware here. It’s a safer process than uninstalling the bloatware completely, and is also easier to accomplish with free apps.
Uninstalling vs. Freezing
Uninstalling an app is exactly what it sounds like – the app is entirely removed from your device. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to get many of these preinstalled apps from the Play Store if you ever need them again. Uninstalling some preinstalled apps may result in problems or instability, so you could run into problems.
It’s safer to “freeze” apps instead of uninstalling them. A frozen app is disabled completely – it won’t appear in your app drawer and it won’t automatically start in the background. A frozen app cannot run in any way until you “unfreeze” it. Freezing and unfreezing are instant processes, so it’s easy to undo your changes if you end up freezing a necessary app.
If you really must uninstall apps, you should freeze them first and wait a few days to ensure that your phone or tablet works properly without them.
You can’t uninstall or freeze preinstalled bloatware apps without root access and third-party app managers. Try and you’ll find the options grayed out in the standard Android interface.

I understand and have frozen quite a few apps with TB Pro. My issue is there are shine pre-installed apps that I like to use, but when I run the task killer, they're always running. Is there a way I can fix them where they don't keep starting immediately after killing them, but still having them available when I want to use them?

Another app called greenify. Or using an autostart manager to prevent them from running without ykur intervention.

Thx a bunch. I dwld and installed the grenify app and disabled them, however, when I run my task killer the gallery app is always running. I wanted to greenify it, but it's not showing up in the greenify app, even when I did a search for it, it just took me to my home screen. I clicked on the app and it just opened but I didn't see any options to greenify it. Any suggestions? Thx for ur help.
so at the end is freezing and renaming the same thing? no one cleared that up, i usually just rename to BAK and thats it, what does TItanium apart from renaming?
ok i answer myself, freezing is the same as going to app manager, and selecting DISABLE
or from a root terminal using:
pm disable {package_name} (e.g. # pm disable com.android.browser)
wich calls:
/system/bin/pm
wich in turn contains:
# Script to start "pm" on the device, which has a very rudimentary
# shell.
#
base=/system
export CLASSPATH=$base/framework/pm.jar
exec app_process $base/bin com.android.commands.pm.Pm "[email protected]"
what it does is set a flag for a component to some of different values:
COMPONENT_ENABLED_STATE_DEFAULT
COMPONENT_ENABLED_STATE_DISABLED
among others. (http://developer.android.com/reference/android/content/pm/PackageManager.html)
where does it store this flag: I DONT KNOW
is this flag a value inside some manifest/ini file? : IDK
is this flag st in the file system? IDK
can someone show me the light?
edit: I DONT KNOW for sure but i think it stores it in : /data/system/packages.xml
that is generated by package manager taking info fro each app manifest. i hope i am right, but dont take my word as absolute truth since it was a quick google research lol
Renaming the apk file can result in unwanted behaviour... I learned by trial&error! I'm running MIUI 6 and wanted Google Play as default app store and not the MI Market. Renaming the apk file for the Mi Market gave me the result I wanted: launching Google Play whenever I clicked a link to a certain app. But that was until I rebooted the phone... it got stuck on the MI startup logo. After renaming the Mi Market apk file in twrp recovery, my phone booted again.
So might try freezing it to see if it will do the job properly.
Freezing Mi Market with AppFreezer worked like a charm!

Depends what you mean by "renaming." Changing the extension from .apk to .apkold or .bak or something like that will harmlessly freeze the app since it's no longer seen as an apk by the system. Renaming the app itself is another thing entirely.
I renamed the extension to .noapk and Miui wouldn't boot anymore.
Good stuff

My Quarantined / frozen apps

I downloaded an app called App quarantine from the market and put the following apps in the don't run bin , but before doing that I downloaded Go Launcher / Go Contacts / Go Sms Pro and did a ehh, conversion from the stock samsung apps to Go Stuff. Has anyone else done this or anything similar?
Apk's no longer running on boot

There are a number of apps that do the same type of thing, Titanium Backup will 'freeze' apps as well as a whole host of additional features.
Then of course, another option is to just rename the apps from *.apk to *.bpk and rebooting.
My personal preference is a third option called Autostarts which is similar to MSconfig in Windows but for Android. The reason being is, it gives you the ability to keep an app from ever running unless you actually tap the app to run it but still allows you to keep the app installed in the event you want to use it. Google Maps comes to mind, I want it installed, I dont want it running in the background.
I dont recommend removing any of the bloatware if you plan on staying on stock but, some of it for US Note users was able to be uninstalled without root via either Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->All Applications, then tap an app and see if uninstall was lit up, if so, sweet. Or, alternatively you could go thru the Market->(Menu Key)->My Apps but not all apps show up in this list. As a side note, I actually manually did a search for many of the apps on the phone and manually updated them because they were not showing up in the market 'My Apps' list.
One other side note, most of the Samsung apps are actually pretty decent, I usually dont touch them. Its the ATT software and the apps ATT took bribe money from third parties that bothers me (Yellow Pages for example).
Oh, and a little known feature of Go Launcher is the ability to hide apps.
Tap the App drawer icon to get to the list of apps on your phone, tap the menu button, tap hide apps. For those of us that havent bothered to root, this at least gives you the ability to not have to look at apps you dont want to see in the app drawer.
Wow thank you for all the info. As far as staying stock, I like making my devices unique to me, I did keep all spen related apps, but killed pretty much everything else. I doubt my phone will ever see an official release of anything, Xda all the way

Just to add I guess a 'fourth' option, I like to use the app 'root toolbox' available on the market with both free and pro versions. Under the advanced menu you can remove any system apps you like but the nice thing is anything you remove is automatically backed up to the root toolbox folder on the internal sd. The backup is done automatically so you dont have to worry about removing something and forgetting to backup first and also gives you the option to restore any system apps you removed simply and easily. Ill be honest the restore feature has saved my bacon many times lol and is also a great way to experiment which apps are safe and unsafe to remove.

Question Something keeps resetting my volume........

Is there a way to see real time app activity on an android device? I remeber there were programer apps that you cold run on PC that did this for debug/cracking.
I'm honestly just trying to figure out what app keeps resetting my volume. Its been going on for months and its driving me nuts...
Any other suggestions are welcome.

Developer options>running apps
See what's running when normal, immediately after an event see if something new is running there.
There are 3rd party apps that may work better, on Samsung's I use Device Care to do this as it list cached apps in order of use. I clear the cache and wait. You get the idea, it works well for stock devices. I tracked down some nasty critters like that and avoided a factory reset to purge them.
Likely a 3rd party app, try in safe mode. May be a system app, any app that has change settings permissions. Use that list as well to see all the potential suspects. Eventually you'll find it.
Avoid using factory reset as it is likely to reoccur otherwise. Clearing the offending apps data maybe all that's needed. Fun times...
Thanks blackhawk, I'll give that a shot.

Global power management is another trouble maker. Try disabling that as well.
Not sure how you do it on Pixels. It will be under battery or power management ie adaptive battery, shutdown apps when not needed, something like that.
It's a native Google Android power management system. To check if it's active: Developer options>standby apps, all app buckets states should show as "active" and not be adjustable (any changes won't take).
If so global power management is disable.
If you can change any of the bucket states, close Developer options and the change takes, it is active. You can not disable it here though.
try checking drivemode , bluetooth devices, adaptive sound and even google assistant for bedtime timers etc

When I had the same problem after switching to a new phone I realized that it must have been app and I finally found the culprit. It was a sound app that I had installed as an equalizer.
I just came across something in a huge Reddit thread about it that suggests it's a TikTok accessibility feature that keeps reducing it.

Is OLED Saver app safe?

I installed this one but are there any safety concerns with using this cause after all it can "see" the whole screen? It's also not on google play so that makes me awry.
Waste of time at the minimum. I would never install such junk.
I feel screen is more bearable to watch at with the dark overlay it puts over it. I have new A52s and flickering is straining on the eyes for me. It's not for the oled saving feature which more than likely is a waste of time as you say.

You should be careful about apps you sideload from such risky sites. Make sure you disable internet access to all such apps and grant only the bare minimum permissions that is required for the purpose.
Often apps ask for way too many unnecessary permissions, and some won't work without those. I would immediately uninstall apps that refuse to work without unnecessary permissions.

It gets every permission pretty much cause it acts an overlay, from accessibility and so forth. That's why I asked if maybe someone ever went through inner workings of this app.
I did scan it with that google play protect feature and it came up with nothing.

I would always scan APKs on VirusTotal too.
As with permissions, I don't know why it needs Accessibility permission. This permission is usually only required when an app clicks on something on the screen on behalf of the user. Not sure what other permissions it needs.
If you find alternatives on Google Play Store that perform the same function, you can check them out to see if they too ask for the same set of permissions.
Thanks for you answers, I ran it through virustotal too and some other similar sites and came up with nothing but still think I won't use it just to stay on the safe side. Developer seems to be gone so can't really ask.
Maybe it's just placebo anyway, OLEDs might not be for me.

Unless it's open-source, I wouldn't install it. Also, there are plenty of apps on Google Play that are scams, just because an app's on there doesn't mean it's safe.
