[q] verizon throttleing data!!?? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

People I would really appreciate your feedback on this, during the past 3 weeks I have noticed that my download speeds had been drastically slow even when I have 4G and speed test coming back on results over 4MB download per second I see this is mostly during some times of the day, late at night it is fine, as an example when I tried to download an app from the market or as well when I'm using my phone as a hot spot it takes over a minute to download 2 MB of data. I have unlimited data and my friend my cousin and his wife are having the same issue, I was having it on my S3 now on my S4, my friend and cousin on their Note 2 and my cousins wife on her iphone 5 we all have unlimited data and now we are wondering if verizon is playing a dirty trick on us.... does anybody here are seeing this problem? are you unlimited or limited? I have called Verizon and they say they are only throttling 3G, not on 4G I already did their stupid apps deletes and resets factory resets etc etc, and I don't want to root my S4 yet in case they blame it on the phone and want me to exchange it.
Thanks,
A worried data devourer

I've got unlimited and use about 50gb-200gb a month. No throttling. Chicago.

I'm near Boston and also experiencing slower 4g speeds. Unlimited plan. Rooted.

I am also having this problem, especially when I download apps in the market. I never had any problems with my S3. I wonder if it is due to the new NFC SIM. I am going to verizon and asking them for the regular sim and see if it solves the problem. I really hope it is not the phone. Also I used to get full 4G signal at home, now I get only 4 bars, it even drops to 3 sometimes.

I don't know what an nfc sim is but I'm running the s4 using the same sim card i had in my galaxy nexus since it first came out. So if that's not an nfc sim...

I noticed the speed fluctuations when the Google play store started with the new updates. It would be with various apps updating and it would be on the network and it was also affecting speeds while on WiFi. It would take 5 min to download a 2 MB file that should only take a few seconds. I do not think the throttle is through the carrier but it may be on the google servers depending on which one you are connected to. I noticed recently that it has gotten better but there could be maintenance going on that is slowing down services and also with the weather around the country there could by bypasses going on that can affect downloads. Just my guess.

Just popped my sim into the galaxy nexus still experienced slower speeds. Maybe the weather or some other factor is at play

It might just be your location. If anyone in the range of the cell tower your phone is connected to is using a lot of bandwidth or it is heavily populated with 4G users, you will feel the effects of it. Have you replicated it in a completely different area that's less populated and is greater than 5 miles away?

No. Only relative to same location in the past. Will try new places as i move through the world

Well I kind of doubt it would be the location, the reason is because I work traveling and during this past two weeks I was in Rock Hill SC near Charlotte NC, and Duluth GA near Atlanta, and was experiencing the same issues mmmmmm

Verizon does not throttle you. I'm currently using unlimited 4G and have been using unlimited since it first came out. They have not once throttled me.

porn. lots of it.

Verizon only throttles 3g and only when the tower being used is overloaded. During my year and a half with them I have never been throttled. I mostly always get 4g and I always pull about 15mbps and 1-2 on 3g

GNote Data Being throttled? Data Stopping frequently.

Hello, all.
I have the GNote on the $50 5GB plan and up until today was experiencing some fairly quick data speeds. Today, however, when the Data is 'flowing' it is working well, but I am experiencing quite a few pauses in the delivery of the data.
I am completely stock using the original SIM and the original APN (AT&T PTA).
I have an AT&T Tablet right next to the Note and am not experiencing this on the tablet, which is on the Broadband APN.
Anyone else experiencing this? Thoughts? Thanks.
I am. I am on the unlimited LTE data. It works fine most of the time. But sometimes when i go to a full website it just hangs on a white screen loading the page.
Xda app sometimes wont connect on initial launch.
Some other apps like amazon wont load all product data.
Rather annoying. Especially when im only at 1300mb for this billing period.

I thought it was just unlimited plans and certainly not if you have not passed your limit. Sometimes they are adjusting the network etc which can lead to issues like you are describing.

Is there something wrong with some of our notes? Bad part or something? The last two days my amazon app will say network error and nothing will load sometimes. Web broswer will time out and say web page cant be displayed. All while i have full bars

certain places in my town i have no data. i drive a few blocks and it's fine. in the dead spots, my wife's phone works fine. I'm in an hspa area so its not an lte issue.
I have noticed this to. I am in NYC. It happens with full bars. Sometimes an app or the browser just stops receiving data. Causes the app to force close sometimes too. I am on a tiered plan.

Your data issue could have to do with an over-taxed network...

It would most likely not affect you coming in since only unlimited plans get throttled. They have not been offered for a while but some of us were grandfathered in.
Depending on where you live and how strong the network is there. Here in DFW and Texas for that matter, I must say the ATT network is top notch. LTE is reliable and fast and in most of our larger cities.

How to tether without getting caught?

I'm currently running on Shostock 4.1.1. I use to be an AT&T rep for 3 years until September of 2011. Before I quit, I noticed a lot of cases where AT&T took away people's unlimited plans because of illegal tethering. Needless to say I stopped tethering since then.
My question is, is there a way to tether without getting caught by AT&T? I only need to do this for 2 days on my road trip
VPN, or I heard some people use a different APN.
Agree. I think different apn is needed.

I thought most roms we have here already have the tethering enabled and allowed and the settings configured so we wouldn't get caught? I dunno I use it all the time and never had any problems.

PdaNet is USB tethering that claims to mask your other device. I also thought another developer was working on this, might has been Chainfire.
"Pda net" plus "Fox fi" (both of the apps for Fox fi)...won't work on jellybean, but works great on ics, haven't been caught in the past year so far...it uses the phone apn instead of the tethering one, i believe that's how it works, so att only sees you using phone data

I was wondering WHY and HOW ATT can still be charging for it? Courts recently ruled in a Verizon case that they HAD TO offer free tethering on ALL plans. I will have to look up the link but I am sure I read it in yahoo news. So if that is the case and a judge declared it, then HOW can ATT get away with it. Your paying for you 2Gb, 3Gb, or like in my case Unlimited data plan. So if you use YOUR DATA up to what you pay for (2Gb/3Gb data) it should NOT MATTER HOW YOU USE IT. PERIOD...

This does not and will not affect ATT's tethering in any way. Verizon had an agreement when they bought access to their 4G baseband. The lawsuit was because they broke that agreement. In addition, it was a settlement, not a court ruling. This is not the case with ATT. Sorry guys.
I heard that tethering to laptops/desktop/computer in general is easier to get caught than tethering to a tablet. If you use a lot of data by tethering to a computer, AT&T might find out easily compared to if you're tethering to a tablet.

Thank you, this is the one I couldn't remember.
I got the warning once when using my iPhone back in the day with MyWi.
I have yet to get caught (knock on wood) using the Galaxy S2 on my grandfathered unlimited plan. I've used it a handful of time (road trip Slingbox on my laptop for streaming TV and in airports waiting for a plane).
What I've done on the PC end is disable anything that would try and access the internet other than the web browser. If your computer is let's say...looking for Windows Updates that's pretty obvious it's not coming from a phone. So that's one of a few services I disable when I opt to tether the laptop to the phone.
Been doing this for a year now and okay (/knocks on wood/)

Signal strength problems

I had always read that Samsung phones had signal issues on cdma networks. This is my first Samsung device after several HTC. My wife and I are both dropping calls daily in front of our house. I cannot hold a call in my front entry way. Our previous rezound and thunderbolts did not have this problem and neither do our kids droid DNAs.
I called Verizon about getting a network extender because other than signal issues, we love the notes. They want 300 for it. I refused. They sent out techs to check signal in our location and say we have 3 towers blanketing our area so it's the phone. Still won't give us a free network extender. They agree it's a device problem. They say they have no phone comparable to the note to switch to and said there was nothing they could do. I told them to send another note to try. I guess I will keep going through notes until they other me the new Motorola's in a couple of months. They did offer me an upgrade, but I'm not giving up unlimited data.
I might hold out and try to get the next HTC phone that drops, either DNA 2 or one.
It really sucks because otherwise this phone is the best but dropping calls daily really sucks...

My note does not have any issues with wifi. Check that its the phone and not the router.... really really sounds like its not the phone.
As for signal issues, My note did have issues with verizon. i switched to AT&T with the same phone and its 10x better. Probably more to do with my area than actual reception problems though.
Interesting my note gets far better signal strength than my 2 previous HTC devices I had. The only thing I don't think it matches up to is Motorola who I believe build the best radios period.

Don't think it's the router because it happens on both my note 2 and note 10.1

The signal strengths match in setting between Samsung and HTC, but HTC phones seem to hold lower signal better where Samsung just gives up and you lose the call. Also, Samsung is quicker to jump over to 3g while HTC holds onto that one bar of lte better.
This has been reproducible for me on multiple Samsung and HTC devices (2 notes, 2 thunderbolts, rezound, 2 DNAs)

YouTube Throttling?

Is anyone else experiencing issues while trying to watch YouTube videos? I have great coverage but whenever I attempt to watch a video it plays for 5 seconds then pauses for 3. I've tested this in the Austin and San Antonio areas but the results are the same. Works perfect on WiFi though.

i have been in contact with verizon over the past two days on twitter over my speeds. I also can't watch a youtube video unless my speeds are great or i turn on wi-fi. The youtube thing has recently started so I thought the same thing!! Speeds that i get I use to be able to watch youtube with no issues. Now i can't even watch in the lower resolutions without it buffering..Hopefully, more responses pop up here to see if Verizon could be throttling.
I have the same problem as does my wife on her G2.

Working fine this morning. Both lines. Odd.

I'm having the same problems on my G3 with Verizon. I can have excellent reception full 4g LTE and no matter what the resolution same problem. Glad it's not just me.
I have no idea if this has anything to do with this problem. My line of thinking is that _maybe_ they're testing ways to throttle. However, with tiered data users having the problem as well, it doesn't make sense. The fact this is happening, doesn't make sense. I guess if this was a test, it wouldn't last this long either. http://www.droid-life.com/2014/07/24/verizon-network-optimization-throttling-unlimited-lte/

Edit: once again, YouTube is working fine in the morning. I will continue to check it throughout the day and try to see when they begin to throttle.
Edit 2: working great at 9:30am EST. I'll see if it does the same as yesterday and throttles me by my lunch at 12.
Edit 3: 11:15am, I've been throttled. I tried it at 10:30 and it was still fine so it looks like 11 is the magic number.

Having unlimited data with high speed was the only reason I was still with verizon, with their locked phones. I'm jumping ship to tmobile's unlimited data plan and getting me an unlocked bootloader g3.

This is why Google needs to put the watch later cache feature back in. Maybe they could even beef it up and let us choose how much to cache, and what videos are most important to cache. I'd love to have a way to rearrange the watch later section also. Maybe have 4 options; oldest to newest added, newest to oldest added, shortest to longest videos, and longest to shortest. I really hate that they removed the feature. I didn't update just because that feature was the most important feature in the YouTube app (followed by playback with screen off that they also removed) but a few days after the update the feature stopped working on the old version I was on as well. A lot of times it seems like they take one step forward and two steps back. I think I'm just going to have to try and find a decent 3rd party solution.
Edit: I'm sure share nothing users would love this back as well. I think Google is getting money from some of the carriers to remove the feature to force people to pay for more data (or scale back their usage).

Another reason to keep your Note 3

I recently purchased a Galaxy note Edge for my daughter and rooted it to enable the Hotspot. Found out the Note Edge with Sprint Spark is single Antenna device. So, if the Hotspot is enabled and your using it to run a laptop. Then at the same time you receive a phone call it drops the Hotspot internet connection.
In other words you cannot receive calls and data at the same time. The Note 4, Note 5, Note Edge, S6, and S6 Edge all have a single antenna. The Note 3 is the last Samsung device to send and receive data and phone calls at the same time. Just another reason I still run a Note 3 . :good:

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
One of the many reasons i love this note 3.
Wait....so the Note 3 has a dual radio that allows you to talk and browse over 3G at the same time?

No way! All this time I only thought the GS3 and HTC EVO LTE only had it; main reason why I still have and develope for the GS3.
Just bought one for my wife. Should look into buying me one now. I'm a road warrior and having that option is a necessity. Thanks for the info!

Please correct me if I am mistaken. However, my wife has a Note Edge which i rooted for her and I have the Note 3 (which I love) and she can get data while on a call. Simple test we did was for her to call me and then simply leave me talking while she surfs the web. She was able to do it multiple times as well as receive email too. She can do data while on a call. Does this mean that she has a dual antenna? Is there another test which I should perform further prove data and voice working simultaneously? Thanks again,

No I'm afraid not. The antenna is hardware not software they are all built with one antenna. Was the device on 3g or 4g lte or WiFi ? With sprint spark I know you can surf the net while on a phone call with a 4g lte signal. I don't know if this is true if the device is on a 3g signal, will try it on my daughters note edge once I can get the phone back ( young girls and cell phones need I say more ). What the device will not do is with the hotspot activated ( meaning the phone is being used as a wireless router running internet to a laptop ). If a call is received the hotspot internet connection is dropped.
With my note 3 I have been on the phone talking, surfing the net, and had some one using the hotspot for a laptop all at the same time a truly remarkable device.
Thanks for getting back to me. I have been able to go on with both LTE and 3G while on call and surfing. I see what you mean now about the hotspot as a router. I remember the days of doing that with my HTC EVO 4G LTE (sorry I regress). I will try the hotspot later today. Thanks again and i agree a great and versatile phone we own in the Note 3. It will be very hard for me to give up this phone for another. My son uses my old Note 2 and he loves it.

Not 3g only 4g. As stated the GS3, Evo Lte and LG Viper where the first and last phones that handled voice and data on 3g while on a call. The technology was called SVDO and it was out the door just as fast as it came.

This is not accurate either. No sprint spark phone can do data on 4g while on a call. No data and call unless on WiFi till SVLTE is rolled out which is no time soon.

Hmmm . . . yep !!! Very impressive download numbers, provided you can hit a Spark tower still pretty rare outside the big cities.

RayTrue04 is correct, after talking to my daughter about her Note Edge. She can't surf the net ( receive data ) while on a call with 3g or 4g LTE, she can however while on Wfi. I stand corrected.

I get it home and at work. Here in CT we received a pretty decent wimax rollout and so far Sprint has transitioned to TDD LTE pretty quickly too. I live in Hartford and pull a good 50-70 mbps but omw to work in Manchester is where it really flies pulling almost 100 mbps. Also VOLTE will be coming someday so calls and data will be possible. On top of that they're also going to turn on 3x Carrier Aggregation and also bring CA to their other LTE bands. Older phones can't take advantage of those perks. I would only rock to a Note 3 or older phone if Spark is still absent in my market which isn't.

How does she like her Note Edge? Us Note Edge users are pretty rare. Every time I run into one we both look at the other shocked and then breakout into a quick convo like we have an instant connection or something lol..
