Stops charging from PC - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have little problem. My S3 sometimes randomly stops charging from PC.
Attached picture.
As u can see, phone "charges" all the time, but from 14% when I started to charge it, it charged only to 30% and then stayed like that for a while. Meanwhile, screen was off almoust whole time.

What could cause it to stop charging? Cable is new (original) as I bought phone less than a month ago. PC was on all the time.

may be a faulty usb connection? may be the phone isn't getting required voltage to charge?

If I unplug and plug it again, it will charge till 100% w/o problem.
It would look like at some point usb cable is moved or somehow half unpluged delivering less power to the phone, but it isnt. It doesnt feel unplugged... That was first thing I checked...

[Q] Auto shutdown fault - Xperia Neo

Gidday - This morning I woke up to find my phone had switched itself off during the night while on charge.
Last night I put my phone to charge through USB connected to my PC in sleep mode. I've been charging the phone like this since I got it 3 weeks ago and its been working fine.
When I woke up in the morning I found the phone off and when I gave the power button a short press expecting it to show me the time all I got was a battery charging symbol.
When I went to bed I had the standard "Clock" feature running that comes standard with the Neo so it acts like a bedside clock and I always have the Wifi on when I'm at home.
No other applications were running in the background apart from the normal stuff but I'm quite concerned that the phone turned itself off while I was sleeping because I use the alarm feature to wake me up when I need to go to work and I know these Android phones do not wake themselves up to run the alarm.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
Now this is very funny you say this because this happens to me,,, but I'm convinced I turn it off myself,in my sleep my partner confirms lol
But seriously could of just been a reboot
As long as it don't happen again it should be no great consern ''unless you sleep in for work'' lol

I heard charging like this(from night to morning) is not good for the battery. The owner of the shop where I brought my W595,Neo V specially told me NOT to do this,as he said this can reduce both battery life and phones life.Anyway don't get that much concerned about itself switching off mate after only happening it once. But if can in future don't charge like that.
lol kormatoes ,I on the other hand when ppl call in night sometimes I was told that I just answer it and instead talking keep it beside my pillow thinking it was alarm and go back to sleep xD
Was the phone fully charged when you woke up? If not I would guess something went wrong with the laptop..
I've never left my phone plugged into a laptop for charging, I always use the wall plug overnight.. And don't worry, plugging your phone in every night is not bad for your battery it control's the charge and drops down to 98% when it gets to 100% before charging again.. This trickle effect on a li-ion battery is fine (would have been bad for nicad or nimh tho) and your using a laptop usb which only delivers about 500ma that's a really nice slow (low C) charge rate, li-ion and li-poly batteries love to keep topped up, what they hate is to be discharged to much. (my 2c)
If you're really worried about this (random shutdown) happening on a work day then use the wall charger the phone came with.. Just to eliminate any other factors that might have contributed to it turning off (use the laptop on your days/nights off to try and replicate the fault) would be interesting to figure it out what caused it..

Thanks for your comments guys.
I'm not sure why charging it via usb is going to do it any harm? or was the guy in the shop trying so say that its not good to have the phone plugged into the charger for hours on end once it gets fully charged? either way I've been thinking that charging via usb is better for the battery because its a lower energy input and therefore charges the battery slower/cooler which in turn should make it last longer (just guessing here - no science to back this up)
Then there is the having it plugged in while at 100% - I've noticed that the phone somehow disconnects itself and stops charging the battery when at 100%. I noticed this today when I started my phone after its surprising shutdown = the battery was fully charged (because it had been plugged in all night) and the battery display refused to show me that the phone was plugged in (when it was) so I turned on the flash light feature and blasted some music to drop the %tage down and sure enough as soon as the percentage dropped below 100% the indicators on the phone started to show the batter was charging (both via the lightening bolt in the normal battery icon and also on my battery monitor which tells me if its charging and how much longer it will be charging for).
I'm looking forward to seeing if the phone is still on tomorrow when I get up.
Any more ideas much appreciated - once might not sound like much but if the alarm/phone had the potential to be even the slightest bit unreliable then I'm going to have to go back to the old alarm clock. At least with my Nokia I could even switch the phone off and the alarm would still chime (we've all experienced this with the old school phones) but I notice that android hasn't managed this yet.

Thanks for your thoughts Kiwi (I've only just figured out who this is ) - The laptop was in sleep mode and from what I've experienced the only thing that works when in this mode is the usb ports - the Wifi and the Bluetooth shut down and I'm guessing that the processor mostly shuts down too? guessing here?
But even so what on the computer might cause the phone to crash?

Sorry if my earlier post was confusing,he told me its not good to have it plugged into the charger for longer periods of time after its fully charged.I too normally charge it with pc as phone came with one usb cable + charger plug with usb port & usb cable is always attached to my pc.Anyway about that keeping it for the whole night is bad theory I'm not sure if its correct or wrong but I prefer not keeping it plugged in for like 6-7 hours everyday while it only need 2-3 hours maximum to fully charge.

I've noticed that when you reboot while plugged in, it might just go right into charge mode. Try turning it on, and then plug it in righ thereafter. Likely it will not boot, but go to the charge animation.
Can't try it myself, phone's in for repair

Hmm interesting theory - but I've tried it and the phone has restarted : (
Probably a good thing but still no closer to finding the solution except I'm wondering if it was because my ROM memory was pretty much full? So in case it was I've moved a few things from System apps to User apps in the hope that the phone wont switch off by itself again.

If you're rooted, I can recommend Link2SD.
HilfordJames and I have discussed this in length already so this is more for other people's benefit..
Link to sd can be dangerous, as can forcing apps to sd that don't offer the choice normally, app developers block the option to install to sd for a reason, that is usually because the app accesses services that can become corupt or crash if the app is suddenly ejected from the phone (like when you mount the sd card on the computer) so its best to leave those apps on the internal memory.
The most likely reason for the overnight shutdown would be (as you said) that you had filled your system memory up with user apps.
Sure enough once you've deleted all that bloatware from the system you have heaps of room just begging to be filled in the system partition.. But you gotta leave some room in there (about 60-70mb should be enough)
I think another thing could be if your computer somehow woke up in the middle of the night and accessed (auto mounted) your phones sd card, sounds unlikely but I've had laptops run scheduled updates in the middle of the night when they were supposed to be "asleep" if this happened and you had an application running off sd card that uses phone services (like Wifi, bluetooth etc) this may have crashed the phone.. And as it was plugged into power remained shutdown.. Once again (AFAIK) these apps should be installed on the phone not sd card. (games and similar apps are fine on sd card)
Just a couple of theories, but I think we are on the right track

Yip all good.
Since transferring a lot of the files/apps back to user memory I've not had the phone auto shutoff and I've tested it by leaving it on the CPU at night as well and it seems fine - although I now charge it from the wall charger if I'm working the next day just to be on the safe side.

[Q] Galaxy S3 charging problem?

So i bought my SGS3 (marble white) a few days ago and it was working perfectly fine. A few days ago my phone suddenly stopped charging. I rebooted the phone and it was charging again. Last night it again stopped charging. I again rebooted but this time it did not fix the problem.
I know that the charging port of the phone is not damaged as phone works perfectly fine when connected to a pc via usb cable and charges.
And i have never ever plugged in a non-genuine accessory to its micro usb port. Not even a dock!
Anyone with a similar problem or cure?
edit: software update fixed it in my case.

I will not say I have a cure, but I am facing the same problem, sometimes I have to reboot twice for it to start charging.
Guru's kindly look into the issue and help us, this happens in both the cases, while charging for adapter or while charging from USB.

Well not exactly, it does not happen when i plug the phone into a usb port.
It happens with the charger but, now my phone is not just recognizing the charger. I have rebooted twice, thrice but still the same problem.
I'm having a similar problem,
Charging when -
phone on
power save on - WIFI/data and most other things are off
charges 2% per hr with official charger (wall socket)
Charging when -
phone OFF!
40% per hr with official charger (wall socket)
Haven't really tried the PC USB charging yet,
But i have noticed that my battery info page says the phones been on battery for
2 days 22hrs, Very strange as i have charged and attempted to charge the phone more than 10 times in the past 24hrs.
Anyone also noticed the on battery time to be wrong?
i got this problem yesterday too , restart then its ok , weird ...
before reboot the battery icon shows charging icon but its not charging at all
does charging a battery run a software too ?

My mobile is no more in warranty as I have rooted my phone, will have to come back to stock rom for me to claim warranty, that's why I am waiting for someone to provide solution before I return back to stock rom for warranty claim.
Sounds like it's an issue with the charger, rather than the phone.

I thought it was best to ask here before i contact orange to report the problem, as i really didn't want to send the phone back to them if its something i could have fixed
I'm doing a factory reset and if it still has charging problems i will call orange today.
I'm facing the same problem. It started about 2 weeks ago.
I tried different chargers but no hope. the only way to charge it is via a usb port.
I had this problem once on the first day I got my phone. Worked fine though with an iphone charger with the samsung usb cable. Have any of you guys tried that?

I thanked your post accidentally while trying to quote you
The batterystats.bin file only resets itself after a full charge to 100%. That's the file that's responsible for showing all the battery usage info. So if you just keep topping up your phone without letting it charge to 100%, the battery statistics will be from the last full charge. If you see the graph you'll see it rises everytime you charge and then falls when you take it off charge. It cumulatively shows the amount of time you've used the phone on battery since the last full charge, regardless of how much you charge it in between. When you let it charge fully to 100% and unplug it, the battery stats file will be reset and give you a correct reading.

I'm having a similar issue, only difference to what you guys are having is that my SIII start charging via the normal charger if its been in USB for a bit, like 2-5 min. I tried the rebooting, nothing. it only charges through USB 1st, then it will work via the stock charger, I've tested it on another charger aswell, and the samsung car charger.
I really hope there is a quick fix, becuase I dont want to send it in for repairs, as cellphone providers in SA arent the best.
I had a similar problem with my gtab 2 10.1 but the wall charger is to blame

Mega 6.3 won't charge!

Guys, i have a 10 months old Galaxy Mega 6.3 and suddenly i'm not able to charge the battery.
I've tried to charge with 30%~ 40%, with my phone turned on, which i always do, everyday... And don't charge at all.
I've tried to charge it turned off, but keeps repeating that screen with the battery with a circle(and a rumble), then this repeats over and over...

Hi..first try removing the battery from the phone for about 10 secs and put it back in and see if that will help, because the battery should still be in a charging state even if the battery was not that good as this has happened to me on other samsung phones, and if not better re-install the rom you have, but make a backup first if you can..worth a try before proceeding further.

I have the latest stock rom installed, so, i don't think it is a rom issue. Besides that, how can i re-install it if i can't turn my phone on? Now i have something 1 or 2% battery life =/
I've tried to remove the battery a couple times, 10sec, 10min... nothing seems to work. Since i have warranty, i'll have to use it, the problem here in Brazil, specially in my city, the service takes forever(3 to 4 weeks =/)

Oh okay I didn't know you could not get into the rom or past that battery icon..then most likely a port problem forsure..did you try another usb cable to just make sure.
Edit: when you have your usb cable unplugged from the phone it should still boot into your rom as the port has nothing to do with that part..what does it show on your screen when you boot the phone without the usb connected.

This happened to me last month on my 10 months old Mega. It was driving me crazy. Phone was charging just 10% / hour (as opposed to 60%). I tried charging with other chargers but result wasn't different.
After much research I came to know that my phone did not have any of the following problems
- ROM (stock 4.2.2), my phone was going into good deep sleep etc.
- Some app (I factory reset my phone to rule that out)
- My charger (I used others')
- My USB port (I always use wall charger)
The problem was with the freaking charger cable (weird right?). I took my friend's charging cable and used with original charger and my phone was back on track.
I still have to buy a new cable. Just researching to get a good one (weird again).
I found the Mega does tend to get hot sometimes where the battery is. I think it's faulty connectors. One of mine looks a bit discolored. But who knows.

Okay, so I just this moment joined the forum JUST so I could thank Member hopsin444 for this advice. Just as he guaranteed, it was the charging port. After getting his advice, I downloaded the PDF User Manual for the Galaxy Mega (my phone). I did what another member suggested and unplugged the battery for 10 minutes (just to be safe). I plugged it back in, and used the brand new charger and cable that came with my phone. I had been using a different charger, so I wanted to get a brand new clean start. Sure enough, the battery started charging immediately, good as new. I must say that in order for this method to work, you must insure that all components are in working order: battery, charger, and cable connectors. Because, otherwise, it's hard to debug exactly which little part is the culprit for the problem.
Once again, thank you ever so much hospsin444. You saved me a lot of cash, trips to the repair shop, and untold headaches.`
Update: The phone charge from 66% to 70% and then stopped charging again. I'm thinking it's the little slot -- on the phone itself -- that the charger cable plugs into that is the problem. My only option now is to take the phone to get repaired. But my thanks to hopsin still applies. It was fun while it lasted.

Your not the only one, this just happened to my Mega at the end of July and i replaced the port just the other week and still nothing. Only way it charges is if it was off...i cant charge it while its on, the battery depletes itself and on top of that i can't even use my portable battery to charge this phone. The cable has to only be a Samsung issued cable and that doesn't even make anything better. I'm just going to officially retire this phone and get me another phone

(Third Galaxy phone model.......and my LAST)

I figured out two other reasons why my phone was charging poorly even when I replaced the USB port 1. The charger wire was weak (yes it is a Samsung USB wire) and needed to be replaced. I wasn't getting enough power from the outlet to the phone and it would stay at a percentage for 30 minutes or longer and 2. There was a Low Battery Dump setting that was off (similar setting like the SGS3 and SGS4)
But one thing that now gets me is why I can't use my portable battery to charge anymore? Nothing is wrong with the battery (it charges all of my other electronics with no problem)

Could I try to cover it with a towel then put it in a bag ant it in the freezer for 12 hours and take it out and let it reach room temp
I'm having the same exact problem, did you figure out what the problem was?
sometimes change the plugin charger can resolve the problem, but if you have change the plugin and still can not charge like mine maybe
using charger 0.7A can resolve the charging problem, very slow charging . OR using 2.1A charger but try and error until found the perfect one. (it works on my mega LTE)
Me too, having charging problem with my Mega 6.3 i527m. : (
I had used different chargers, cables and batteries, still the problem of not charging was unsolved.
But when the original usb cable and Samsung's proprietary 2A Traveler's charger that came with my old Samsung Tab 7.7 were used, my Mega detected it immediately and the grey battery icon flashed off and on faster than before - a good sign it was charging.
So, that means my charging port/flex is not defective.
Lesson Learned: It pays to use the original accessories that came with your device or gadget!

Battery issue

Hello everyone
For the last 2 days, my S3 is having a hard time charging its battery: when I plug it into my computer, the lock screen says "battery loading" and there's a small lighting at the top of the screen telling me its loading but the percentage of battery left stays (or increase really slowly) at 42%.
I tried removing the battery, turning the device on and off or trying another USB cable (and with the charger instead of with my computer) and it still take a very long time to load. I haven't installed any app or changed the ROM. It litterally came from one day to another.
Any ideas ?
Thank you

PCs aren't able to provide a voltage as high as wall plugs can. If you're using your phone while it charges then the charge may not change because it's using the same amount of charge you put in. Try charging at the wall first, and if that doesn't change anything it's probably a problem with the battery.

Galaxy Tab S3 won't turn on after battery is drained

Hello. Today my Tab S3's battery went to 0%, it shut itself off but it stays in a state where charging it won't show anything on the screen and my Back and Recent soft buttons remain lit. I have read of this issue on the internet.
I have some quite important data on this tablet and if it needs a mobo swap I'm screwed.
What should I do?

What other people with this issue do according to what you have read?

They either send it to Samsung for repair, which replaces the whole mobo-screen assembly, or do it DIY, "jumpstarting" the battery with a spliced cable.
Fortunately, leaving it unplugged overnight resolved the issue, giving me the ability to just plug it and charge it a bit to see if it still boots.
Thanks for replying anyway dude
I had the same problem after using otg, but ma battery wasn't drained, it was just below 20% and it didn't want to start charging. Plugging and unplugging otg dongle solved the problem.
