Does anyone know how to limit or reduce the amount of wakelocks this process creates? I have most of my synchs off, however in the 7 hr 24 m my phone has been on, this process has created 682 wakelocks and has kept the phone awake for over 8 mins. I noticed that Android System was burning my battery more than usual today and tried to investigate further. Android system has used 68% of my battery while screen is only 21% with 1 hr 22 min screen on. My battery is at 50% and seems to be draining quicker than normal.

Do you use this feature? If not, you can turn it off.......
That's my question - I don't know what program uses this feature. If I knew, I'd turn it off or change the settings to limit it. I downloaded Snapdragon's Battery Guru and it's doing it's tests over the next two days so maybe it'll catch what's creating all these wakelocks and make recommendations.

I'd start in Settings->My Device->Smart Screen and start shutting of what you don't use in there. I have them all off because I don't use any of them.
Ahh, I must be dumb since I didn't put two and two together to determine that it was the smart actions that used that process. I'll take a look and turn off the ones that aren't needed! I blame it on never having these smart features before coming from a galaxy nexus! Thanks!

I'm having this issue of my phone not sleeping when the phone is off. I checked kernel wakelocks and the number 1 culprit is Power Manager Service. Anybody have any idea what this is. A distant second is wlan_rx_wake but I'm not too worried about this.
The devs are working on it. If you aren't on the latest CM9 build then you should update.

I'm actually not on AOSP stuff. I'm on one of Neo's roms.
Edit: I just ran a test and for 34 minutes the phone slept for 33 of them. Even though the phone lost 4 percent of battery in that time. I see people saying they have crazy good battery drain rates (like .25%/hr). I thought i would get better life but I guess thats just the way it is.

that rate is based on usage. keeping apps from starting. keeping apps running in foreground all the time. lots of frozen unnecessary apps. screen brightness between 10-20%. betterbatterystats monitors wakelocks

When saying .25% per hour I was talking about during sleep but I get 3-4% during sleep. I am going to try and wipe everything and start from scratch. But if my phone is sleeping >90% of the time when the screen is off, there's not much I can do to improve battery drain during sleep no(app wise), and screen brightness won't help at this level cause it's when the screen is off?
have to watch for partial wakelocks or any wakelocks. apps automatically starting when not needed or still running will reduce your amount of deep sleep. use betterbatterystats to monitor usage while it's off
Hi there,
I've been noticing that I've been getting very poor battery life on my new S3 both on ICS and now on JB. After some googling I found the problem of S3s not going into deep sleep when left idle so I installed BBS and sure enough, overnight when not touched my phone went from 100% to 18% (9.6% drain per hour). I have the statistics and it was awake for almost all of this time. I can't yet post screenshots as a new member but I was hoping somebody could help me get to the bottom of my issue.
The total time since unplugged from 100% is 8h 12 mins 21 s as a reference point.
Other:
Wifi On 8h 11m

No Data Connection 3h 34 m

Finally, the battery tab in OS settings says that Maps used 29%, Media 23%, gpsd 16%, device idle 10%, cell standy 9%, screen 3%, Androis OS 3%, Androis System 2%, doubletwist 2%.
I know that AlarmManager can mean a lot of things but is there any way of finding out without rooting my phone?
Any help on the above would be appreciated as I'm getting pretty frustrated at losing 10% of my battery an hour.
Thanks.

Ye, this belong in the S3 forum.
Anyway, are you running stock kernel?
Was your wifi /gps/data on?
Tried to reboot? Wipe cache?

I think so but I'm not entirely sure what the stock kernel is. I've not rooted it and updated to JellyBean through an automatic software update so it should be the standard one.
Wifi GPS and data were enabled all night. I was at home so it would have been connected with that. GPS was not active at all during the time according to the battery stastics.
Have tried rebooting. Just wiped the cache there.
If it helps at all I've noticed that often it seems to display the SD card symbol when I turn on the screen, don't know if that has something to do with the mediascannerservice wakelock?
Clearing the cache and rebooting again hasn't helped.

Kernel Version 3.0.31-368423
Android 4.1.1 which installed automatically via software upgrade option in settings. I'm on Orange UK.
Unfortunately in media storage it says cache 0.00b and no option to clear.
I tried turning off a lot of sync and changing email poll frequencies. This morning, same again. 82% drain in 8h 12 mins. However this time alarm manager was responsible for a very small number of wakelocks. Mediascannerservice was by far and away the biggest culprit. Any ideas to stop this short of formatting my SD? I tried clearing the media storage cache but it wouldn't let me.
Hi mate,
have you managed to solve this yet?
I have had my phone a few months and the battery life was OK.
Since upgrading to JB it is terrible - im losing about 10% in standby mode.
I have been looking around at a few things to try but i want to leave my phone in standby for an hour to see how much i am losing and where.
This is my first Android phone and although i love it the battery is a lot worse, for me, over my iphone 4 - with the same usage.
A question i have for people - when i had bad battery on my iphone i restored it in itunes and set it back up again. This seemed to fix the issue.
Should i do this on my S3? Have people managed to get a seemingly bad battery to perform better with a restore?

I did a factory reset and the problem was gone. For a few days it worked absolutely fine until last week, when I spotted the battery draining excessively, checked BBS and noticed that media scanner was back. I hadn't added any media files for a while before or installed any new media applications. I cleared the cache for all media applications and it seemed to fix the problem again for about a day but then it came back. I'm really frustrated by this as I can't seem to stop the mediascannerservice from sucking up all my battery life.
OK so i left my phone untouched for 1 hour and 5 minutes and I lost 11% battery!
Any ideas guys?
FYI - the phone was in standby with no apps running for 1 hour.

I have read that this can be due to a faulty mp3 track.
I would suggest removing all your media and see if you still have battery issues.
If you dont then I have no idea how you would find out which track has the problem?! Do a chunk, check battery and then filter them out that way!

Thanks for the suggestion but after reading that issue elsewhere on this site I have already tried that including going as far as formatting the SD card completely.
Not much help on these forums are there?!
Im gonna try and reset my phone tonight to see if that fixes the problem.

Try charging it and then letting it run for an hour from when you unplug it as that'll give a better indicator. Those usage statistics there take in to account all your usage. If you don't already have it you could get better battery statistics to help diagnose the issue. I believe it can be had for free somewhere around this forum.

Yeah i installed GSAM battery monitor as well and it showed me i was using 11% in 1 hour 5 minutes.
It is telling me that Exchange Services is using 20% of the battery. The thing is that I have always had this on since I had the phone but my battery only seems to be getting worse after JB update.
Just to update this thread. My battery is now MUCH better. I think it was the 2 exchange email accounts I need to have.
I completely restarted fresh and everytime I load email i then clear the RAM. This has helped hugely!
Hope you manage to sort your problem out.
I'm having issues with the media application as well. Now sure what the hell it's doing, but from a 100% (powered off) charge, I dropped to 95% within 10 minutes. GSAM says Media is taking 54.5% of the battery... lovely!
Sadly, the biggest issue with this is that the phone never deep sleeps, so if I am below 40% battery before I sleep, there's a big chance my alarm won't go off in the morning...sucks!
I'll do some more research on this and report back if I manage to fix it.
Update 1:
Removed my card and let GSAM monitor usage. Surprise, surprise! Media went from top drainer to bottom of the list (actually showed as -2.8% lol).
Put the card back and in and mounted it, and media immediately jumped to the top of the list.
Currently in the process of backing up my card data. Gonna format it and put my stuff back and see what happens.
Update 2:
Yeah, formatting seems to do the trick, but as I soon as I copy across my camera roll, it starts flipping out again. Not sure what's going on tbh.
Hey,
I could not find a thread like this via the search bar, so I am opening one up. How much battery does your stock S3 consume by just lying there? I am losing about ten percent overnight, which seems a bit too much for me. Is that normal?
Thanks!
Wait till you get about 70 percent discharge overnight then you'll have something to worry about.

If you searched or read the multiple battery threads then you would have found that yes it is normal .
All depends upon what running .

At night I turn off wifi and data, my battery drops 3%, with data on and wifi off about 5% ( about 8 hours)
Based on reviews on the net it is possible to get it drop 6% in 16 hours with data and wifi on, not getting to this myself but happy enough.

It is very normal for Stock rom to consume that much battery.. However you can save more battery by going into Wifi > advanced > Keepy wifi on during sleep > Select Only when plugged in... Plus disabling wake up commands such as the ones for S Voice, or Google Now can increase battery life upto a great extent.
Also try turning off location services for apps that you don't use that often or the ones that don't really require location services that much.
I had 10 to 15% drop the night, after installing Chrome (because of google sync issue)
but after removed it.. im back to 6-7%
Anyway Dolphin is better
I can only say from memory ...

I can only say from memory - a very clean S3 should get at most 2-3% discharge overnight (even with WiFi, data, BT and GPS started). That might no longer be achievable once you have a number of programs that interact and keep the CPU from staying into deep sleep.
Currently I am seeing at most 1-2% with my configuration - but that involves closing the 4 above before going to bed.(and to get to that point I had to drop a number of programs that were bad in this regard).
Do your own tests with that - look around after BetterBatteryStats.apk or something like that!

Can I ask what your current configuration is?
I am currently running Omega v32.1 with the stock kernel.
I hardly use my phone during the day as I am at work for 12 hours, maybe send a few texts. 3g and sync are always on
I take it off charge at 5.30AM and when I get home at like 8PM it is down to less than 10%... and thats not even heavy use.
I have calibrated the battery using that batterycalibrate app for root users..
Hi everyone. I hope this is the right forums for this thread.
I noticed a decrease my the uptime of my phone over the past few months - which is due to the age of the battery I guess, no nothing alarming.
But a few days ago, I flashed a custom rom (I was on Supernexus 2.0 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2076650) Slimbean build 8 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060541) and all of a sudden my battery went haywire.
The phone would heat up for no reason (as if on charge + everything toggled on + playing a game and microwaving it at the same time) and I lost 40-50% over 20ish minutes.
I reflashed it with the same rom and the problem stayed though it was less frequent. Still I barely manage 4 hours without a charge (lasted at least 20 before that flash)
I went back to Supernexus (v3.0 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2407449). Battery life seems to have improved at bit and phone heats up less.
However on using the phone moderately - some internet browsing over wifi - I lost about 30% over 30 minutes which is at least twice as much as what I was experiencing.
On checking battery usage I noticed "Android OS" was coming on top (same as with previous rom) as opposed to the screen which was eating up most of my battery before.
I checked BBS but saw nothing out of the ordinary but maybe I can't read it properly since I'm not used to it.
So I don't know what to do now. Help anyone?
Edit: Added BBS log
Try a new battery (Go with the obvious stuff first).

I didn't see your message. I have no access to another battery unless buying one of course - which I'd rather avoid doing if it's not the problem.
I don't see this BBS log corresponding in any way with what you said in your first post.
From the log one can see that your battery dropped by about 70% within about 10h, i.e. 3.5% / 30min and not 30% / 30min as you said.
With a screen-on time of 1h 28m within those 10h 18m total time, the values are not really that bad I think.
To further improve the situation you should take care of the first wakelock (NetworkLocationLocator). Without this service waking up your phone permanently it will remain an additional 35m in deep sleep, consuming very little battery. Use google or search on XDA for what you have to disable to get rid of this wakelock.

Well when I went to bed it was at 100% charge. 87% on waking up (~8.30). I checked my mails, and browsed the net a bit (~9.00) it was at 56%
I fiddled around in google services. I didn't check it after flashing. Some stuff were checked by default. Will see how goes.

I've been running into similar issues, and doing a battery calibration seems to have helped me (so far). My phone would use battery quickly and also shut off without warning. I have used the option to "Reset Fuel-Gage Chip" in STweaks when running Siyah Kernel, but since I'm using SuperNexus 3.0 (not sure if I can use Siyah Kernel with it), I downloaded an app off the play store last night simply called "Battery Calibration". I'm still letting the battery drain completely so I'm not sure how well it works yet. Apparently it just deletes the batterystats.bin file.
After running the Fuel-Gage reset on my previous ROM, my phone no longer shuts off without warning. It would start to flicker the screen, kill the data, and then shut off with plenty of battery left according to the OS.
Doing this may hopefully help you as well, since you've been switching ROM's.
I just got my G3 yesterday but the battery drains so quickly. I rooted and added BBS and there are so many sensors and such kept awake. In just wanted to see if anyone has a clue, what I should do to contain these.

Kernel wakelocks don't keep the device awake per se. Those are processes that run when the screen is on. That's why the duration of all of them is almost the same. There's not going to be much you can do about those until/if custom kernels come along. You can try a factory reset, though I don't think it will help.
You should focus on partial wakelocks since those keep the CPU on when the screen is off.

This list for kernel wakelocks goes on for a while. The partial wakelocks are minimal, but whatever is causing these kernel wakelocks is whats causing the device to get warm, and subsequently draining the battery at an accelerated rate (roughly 7%+ per hour with minimal usage.)
I have never before seen such an extensive list from BBS on any of my other devices. Usually its the accumulator of all the partial wakelocks at the top of the list of kernel wakelocks by a large margin.

I'm with you. Been searching around for things I can freeze/hibernate to minimize wakelocks. Like stated earlier though we really need a custom kernel to get rid of a lot of those Kernel ones. The Partials aren't really that bad.
I have only had this phone since earlier today though so I'm keeping my eye on BBS like you are

This phone does seemto have a ridiculous abou amount of activity going on. I had the dreaded (nlpcollectorwakelock) battery drain my first day but a reset took care of it. My battery had since calmed down and I'm getting good sot now. My android os stays at around 14-20%as well but a long as my sot is decent I'm not stressing anymore
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
Yea mine is only draining at around 3% am hour with my use according to BBS.
That's just on WiFi and doing some browsing + Tapatalk+ a little YouTube.... So I can't complain.
It'll take a few charge cycles plus keeping an eye what else I can freeze and hibernate.
Considering the display on this thing that's pretty good I'm happy.... Be a little happier with a SaberMod ROM and Kernel though [emoji2]

I just got my G3 yesterday but the battery drains so quickly. I rooted and added BBS and there are so many sensors and such kept awake. In just wanted to see if anyone has a clue, what I should do to contain these.

My battery life is just as good as on my G2. Under normal (moderate/moderate-heavy) use I can get a day out of it easily. Yesterday I went to bed with about 44% left after over 13 hours use (with 2.75 hours of screen-on time).
I would recommend using CPU Spy to make sure the phone is going into Deep Sleep. There might be some process keeping it at a higher functioning state and not allowing the phone to hit Deep Sleep. For the most part, the phone should be in Deep Sleep longer than any other processor state.
I think a factory reset is in order. If that does not help you might just have a bad device, or a bad battery.

My phone is showing a huge number of sensors wakelocking the phone, and it was only in deep sleep 17% of the time since I unplugged it 6 hours ago. That kernel wakelock for the sensors needs to be fixed and then our battery life will be stupid good. You can't get as much screen on time on the G3 as I do on my G2. I was getting up to 10 hours of screen on time on my G2 the best i've managed was 3.5 on the G3. However, custom kernels will probably help there.

The Sensor WakeLocks are quite ridiculous indeed, but what is your phone showing for Partial WakeLocks and Alarms in Better Battery Stats???
Only way I could get mine under control was to use App Ops to limit Google Play Services to NOT keep my phone Awake.
Then I located COM.LGE.IMS and disabled its Receivers then froze it.
Then I Greenify everything possible lol
That Com.LGE.ims thing was waking my phone like crazy, maybe 50-100 times an hour if I remember correctly and I don't even use the feature its tied into... WiFi Calling
