thinking about switching from Sprint - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I've been with Sprint for 13 years and am thinking heavily about moving to Verizon and the S4 mainly for better coverage and data speed. Who has come from Sprint and what phone features do you loose with Verizon? I have heard that Verizon doesn't have visual voice mail or google maps navigation. Have you switched and are you glad?

Haha with sprint for 13 years? Life must suck for you.

Not really, I just want better rural area coverage and faster data speeds. It's been hard to give up unlimited data @ 99/month but paying for 4G that isn't in my area has been pissing me off. It looks like there is more development on the Sprint phone roms.

Look on eBay for verizon unlimited data you can get a line for around 200$ but you also have to pay full price for a phone so it will be about $900 total for a gs4 with unlimited data.

I moved from sprint for the GS4. Of course it depends on your location but for me it's been a night and day difference. Sprint was pathetically slow.
From my GS4 using Tapatalk 2

Do it. Going from sprint to Verizon is like going from 56k dial up to road runner lightning. It really is just like that actually now that I think about it. Sprints 3g is lucky to hit 100kb/s in my area and I do 30-50mbps on Verizon in most areas. It's worth the money. It was for me

Agreed. It's been a few years since I've had sprint but oh my gawd was it awful. It only lasted about 8 months though thank goodness.

Go Verizon. Ive been with every carrier out there except at&t...which I will stay away like the plague. Verizon has the TRUE coverage that nobody else can come close to. You get what you pay for...

Just left Sprint due to crappy coverage - also live in rural area. Verizon tower is 2 mi from my house, plus I get 4G! Could barely get 1 bar in my living room with Sprint. Luckily I was able to force roaming on my last phone for 2 yrs! I'm surprised Sprint didn't cancel my contract ) . BTW - I did try their "Airave" to boost coverage........swapped it out twice (malfunctions with msgs), finally turned that in as well. Verizon is not perfect, but much better coverage!

Lol... Sprint... I had Sprint for a couple weeks and it was the worst service i've ever had under contract. Cricket was the only service that was slower. Luckily i was able to get out of the contract in enough time. I can't say anything for sure about visual voicemail, but why would you think "Verizon" didn't have google maps? I don't think i've ever had an android phone, even on cricket, that didn't have google maps. Or am i not understanding the question properly.
Sprint was about 300kb/s at my work with atleast 10 dead spots around the building (Worse at home). Verizon is 25-36mb/s with out any dead spots

I also switched from Sprint. Speeds were terrible, and I hated it.
Now, speeds are great, but I have a stupid cap. I also lost Google Voice integration which makes me really sad, but I think I'll get over it.

I said I'd never leave Sprint but here I am. I can't stand Verizon because of the way they do things. Locking their phones down and this damn data share thing. 2gb of data for $60? Yeah....sounds like a good deal to me!!! NOT!! They do have the best coverage though and my wife has them so here I am.

I was in the same boat. I have been with Sprint since 1997. Switched from the Nexus S 4G (paying for 4G for the last 2 years that has never come and is not even on the road map last time I looked). Switched to the Galaxy S4 on Verizon. It is amazing the difference.
Between the phone and the network, I am able to play Ingres (at a reasonable speed without taking 45 - 60 seconds to deploy a resonator), check in to four square locations within seconds, etc.
I would definetly recommend it.

I've been with all 4 major Carriers in the USA. Sprint is the worst when it comes to call service & data speeds. Verizon is the best in my experience. It's more expensive but you get what you pay for. I get excellent service everywhere. Fast 4G LTE at my house. But you also give up things when you move to Verizon. No more unlimited data so you gotta watch your data usage with that LTE. Locked Bootloaders so depending on what phone you have on Verizon, development might not be so great. And another annoying gripe is that consistent Wi-Fi notification instead of a quick toggle in the notification bar. But it's all on you. If you don't plan to root your phone or you don't use that much data then Verizon is the best service in my experience. T-Mobile rolled out LTE in my state already so I'm considering going back to them. I never had problems with their service when I use to be with them.

I left Sprint for Verizon, couldn't be happier!

Left sprint 2 days ago for S4 on Verizon, world of difference already, data speeds are MUCH better! Unlimited is great with Sprint but I don't have the time to use unlimited data when you get under 100kb or less on 3g! My 4G stays on all the time with Verizon!

I left Sprint the day the s3 was released. I have never looked back. Unlimited data is no good when you can't access data. (My s2 worked Great on wifi). Took it to Vegas, where they had the old WiMax 4g. I was in and out so much, it destroyed my battery.
Until Verizon,I thought mobile internet was just crap.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

Switched from Sprint yesterday and already know I made the right decision, ETF and all. Unlimited is a misnomer when thr limit is the network itself.
Jump ship and don't look back!

I've made the switch myself about a year and a half ago. Best thing I could have ever done, however it is a bit more price wise but it's well worth it. Coverage and data is excellent.
VZW has their own navigation program but Google Maps is still available to download and use. There is no proprietary visual voice mail, but there's a ton of apps you can download to fix that.

Anyone come from a Sprint Epic Touch 4G?

Really want the giant screen of this phone, even though I really like my Epic Touch 4G; Obviously Sprint data speeds suck right now, but, not sure ATT would be that much better here in the SW 'burbs of Chicago..
Anyone out there that switched from the ET4G for this bad boy?
Are you glad you did, or not so glad?
Thanks so much for your input!

In not far from u (la grange) and att has improved ALOT in last few years. Still get dropped calls here and there but not like in the past. LTE is just wow and that's even with us in Chi town land not getting nowhere near the speeds other markets are. (10 mbs here and Dallas is at 40mbs) .
I've had VZW LTE on my galaxy tab and left them, was never on sprint but remember Nextel
As for the Note I don't think u will put it down much, battery is mehhh but given how much I use it I'm not complaining and there's always a charger near me. My mother lives in wiilowbrook and I have not had any issues in that area, Indian head park is weak in my experience.
Hope this helps.

How does the 4glte work inside your house?
Even though I am really close to Sprint wimax towers, i really get no 4g signal inside my house...
Do you drop calls inside your house, or out on the road?
I work from a home office, and using the phone part of the "package" is very important to me...
Thanks again!
I live in Burr Ridge. Last month I sold my Epic Touch 4g on Sprint for the Note.
Back in the day I'd had the iPhone 3g on AT&T and the service sucked, and I'd swore I'd never come back to AT&T, but I really wanted the Note. I've had no problems on the Note on AT&T...no dropped calls yet, and love the 4g speeds. The 3g speeds I get on AT&T are faster than any of the 4g Wimax speeds I used to get on Sprint.
Fyi here is a speediest from my house and I'm not on lte (it always says 4g in the statusbar, when you're in LTE you'll see a little "lte" in there as well)

thats great to hear!
when I used to have ATT a few years ago, I dropped calls ALWAYS in certain areas; rt 83 and 63rd street, 55 and 355 overpass, it was pretty pathetic to tell people on a call that you had to hang up, because you were going to lose the call..Plus, when I lived in Darien, I had to go out side to make or receive calls, and that was just stupid, especially in the winter!!
Glad to hear they have upgraded the network in the SW burbs...being an older guy, I actually use the phone for phone calls first and foremost..
and, as far as pricing, it appears that with 3 lines and the family plan, I will be paying about 30 dollars a month LESS with ATt than with sprint..hard to believe, but I confirmed the pricing yesterday...Sprints 10 dollar "premium" to own a smartphone now is just bull****..

Yeah, rooting was just as easy. Also, there aren't may custom Roms, but Quality > Quantity.
DAGr8's Saurom rom is the only ROM I've flashed so far (gingerbread ROM) and I've had no complaints. There also has already been an ICS leak and various ROM's that I haven't tried yet and we know a real release will be coming.
Also, Cm9 is supposedly coming:

I too work out of my house (transfer office to cell when I leave) so I rely on my cell for work mainly. LTE reception is very good for me at home but I do use my wifi mainly when home. I have been with att since it was Ameritech and have had every iPhone since the first one but can safely say iPhones cell reception is crap compared to the note. My wife and daughter have iPhones and they still drop calls way way more then me. I never had the phone ur coming from so I can't attest to compare as I have been a sammy guy since the galaxy s and cannot see myself going to another brand.

I'm just hoping the service in my area of Chicago land has improved over what it was 3 years ago, when ATT was the absolute worst in my area..
I never drop calls with sprint when I am out of my house, and inside of it, I have been using an Air Rave device that they provided, so that isn't an issue at home.
Their 3G data is horrible, and, they claim its because they are currently upgrading their network; I gotta tell ya, it was just as bad when they weren't upgrading their network. Typical 3g speeds are 100-400kb, so the thought of getting 5-10 megs from ATT is very exciting...

If I were you, I would test the Note in and around your house for a few days to make sure the reception works well overall.
At times, the data jumps back-and-forth between HSPA and LTE depending on your whereabouts. But...I don't believe it really drains that much battery.
And I agree how Sprint's 3G is an absolute joke....I thought VZW 3G was horrid...but when I saw it on Sprint, it was unbelievably slow.
They continue to advertise that they're the only 1 of the big 4 providers who still offer "truly unlimited data"....but what's the point of having that if you're basically already throttled with dial-up speeds.
Only thing i hate about note is qualcom processor, thats only aspect I miss of s2

yeah, I plan on testing it immediately, but, the problem is of course, that once I port the number over, of their service sucks, its a pain to cancel with them and go back to Sprint; I love the Sammy E4GT, but, I am really switching carriers to get the Note, not Att...I just hope all the improvements in my area that I have heard/read about our true.
I mean, this is the Chicago land market, and I am certain ATT wants to come off as a good provider here..

Need Input: Possibly Switching To Sprint

Hi, I have a couple questions. I currently am with US Cellular with an Electrify. I was thinking of switching to Sprint, but was wondering how cell service is, Internet Speed, just overall view and experience with Sprint. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks
Service is damn good. Internet speed where i live, not so much. Im lucky to get over 200kbs on 3g but i mean, everything loads just fine. The only time you notice is when you are literally downloading something. Other than that, ive been with sprint for 6 years now and im satisfied. Ive never had any real issues. Having never had us cellular though im not sure how to compare the two.

Talk to people in your area and see what their service and speeds are like. In my area I'm averaging 170kbps on 3G for the past year. This is slower than what I got ten years ago on Sprint using a flip phone and 230k hack. Other than that, voice service is good.
The only reason I'm still on Sprint is cost vs data usage. If a GSM carrier offered the same amount of data at the same cost I'd drop Sprint in a heartbeat.

sprint is awesome
I have been with sprint for a year now n never had any problems. I love the photon. In my area(Kansas city) I get around 2mbps on 3g, never used my phone on 4g yet so not sure boot those speeds. I don't get 4g at my house. But I would definitely recommend joining sprint. I love the unlimited data on my rooted photon. I use close to 60gb of data per month. U can't do that with anyother company.
Like mention before check for feedback with people in your area, Im also one of the unlucky ones to get bad 3g about 180kps when Im lucky. However I talked on the phone for hours with sprint yesterday and I can tell you theyre great at customer service and one of the guys that I spoke to confimed that sprint is updating alot of their towers across the US including many around my area. Hopefully yours is already good.
I love sprint i get 1-2 mbps everywhere i go and always hae service when no one does ALWAYS I LOVE IT

I have been with Sprint for over 10 years now, while I am satisfied with the service in general, I wouldn't I say I am happy.
The reason is, their prices....yes their prices. They charge $70 a month for unlimited everything. Fine! It is a great deal compared to the other carriers.
However, their speeds suck, really suck. Some users are lucky enough to be near a good coverage site, but I regularly get between 50Kbps & 250Kbps.
Plus they have the BS $10 charge for Premium Data....what Premium Data? Heck, I can't even get normal data where I live & work. I get stuck sending messages using GVoice, market won't open up. If I switch to WiFi everything will work just fine.
Anyway, the reason I stuck with Sprint was they offered me a huge monthly discount on my bill to move to a smartphone (in Dec. 2010). Plus, their LTE network should be up in 2013 and they are decommissioning their IDEN network and re-purposing the spectrum for LTE (or so I've read).
Their unlimited everything plan is great for people who really use a lot of data and have good coverage. For people like me, who barely use 200MB/month its a waste, if I leave data sync on 24/7 I might push 750MB....that's it. If they had tiered data plans, I would switch to that in an instant.
In any case, if you are happy at US Cellular, there is no need to switch. Wait and see how all of this plays out.
Also, call them and ask for incentives to switch over to them. First month free, 20%-25% off etc. You may not get it the first time but call every few weeks and see if you get lucky, especially near the end of the year.
Good Luck!
I get about 2mbits down and 1 up. Best network speeds around my area. Uscc is just a tiny bit slower than that in the same area.

I have been with sprint for at least 6 years, maybe more. Don't really remember when I first signed up with them. I have not really had much problems with them. Their customer service has only gotten better since I first signed up, however I liked their old phone upgrade plan better than this new one.
I don't get 4g at my house, but that doesn't bother me much because 3g works pretty well, and I almost always have wifi available.

Wow...clear deal would put Sprint ahead of AT&T and VRZ combined...

http://qz.com/#37276/meet-the-private-equity-firm-that-dominates-the-us-gun-industry/
"With an acquisition, Sprint would own a mind-boggling 184 MHz of spectrum, which is more than AT&T (77MHz) and Verizon (83MHz) combined. More spectrum means more bandwidth, and more bandwidth ultimately could ultimately mean faster wireless speeds for Sprint’s mobile customers. It’s as if Sprint is about to have a highway with twice as many lanes on it than either AT&T or Verizon. (That said, both AT&T and Verizon currently have about twice as many subscribers as Sprint’s 50 million.) The acquisition of Clearwire by Sprint may be the primary reason that Japan telco Softbank invested in Sprint in October"
Wow....we could be looking at some pretty impressive stuff in the next few years.

I burn through a minimum of 5-7 gbs a month and have good enough 3g signal to watch Netflix at work and download apps and browse the internet at home. LTE and fast 3g are useless if you max out your data plan in a week... Plus Sprint customer service has been excellent and the phones are great (Evo>One X any day).

I used my data almost exactly the same way but I go through about 8-10 a month. In East/North bay Cali 3g/4g data has been pretty good. No way I can use up that much data with Verizon/ATT without paying more than what I'm paying now.
Locking this as there is already a thread on the clear deal...
FWIW many of the articles are really wrong with comments saying X spectrum sprint will have puts them ahead of the others....must remember all spectrum isn't equal and also some points being left out are one that all that spectrum isn't owned even, as some of it is leased.
Another is that no one is bringing up the point that no one has been trying to buy clearwire for years or their spectrum...except sprint...

So I bought this LTE EVO 4g for lte.. I pay 10 dollars for premium data service and well all I get is 3g ..my bill for one line is roughly 100 dollars a month.. so my girl has straight talk and pays 45 unlimited a month.. well I'm ready to jump ship and I was wondering if I can one get me off the cheap way sprint contract and 2 use my LTE EVO for straight talk?
I think straight talk uses AT&T bands (gsm) so the Evo LTE wouldn't work because it uses cdma bands. It WILL work on Boost though. If you must use Straight Talk, then sell your Evo and buy a One X or One of XL.

Straight Talk uses several carries, including SPRINT, ATT, and VERIZON. How do i know this you ask; well I sell them as part of my job. Straight Talk is working hard on making it easy to bring your own phone and activate service through them. In a few months (subject to change) The system should be in place to bring any cdma phone to straight talk. Currently at the store i work at, all of our straight talk phones go off verizon. Some stores have ones that go off ATT or Sprint, so you need to be careful in which phone you select.

If you are tired of Sprint service just pay the ETF and move on.

Never once heard of st working on sprint towers.. and Verizon and AT&T believe it or not share towers..

I am in a same boat. Struggling with unusable speeds, while my friends with t-mobile's "wannabe" 4G are getting 14mbps down and 3 mbps up. Faster than LTE in 2 spots that I was able to get it.
I thought of using Verizon PRL and force Sprint to boot me off their network, but I called them, gave them all of my complaints, and hoping they could help me. I was with them for 11 years, so maybe they will take it into account.
The verizon prl is the best solution. Because the only thing they are gonna take into account is the fact that right now they are making a ton of money off you. If you wanna try to flash your phone to verizon or pageplus you won't be disappointed. If you need 4g and live in good tmobile coverage area then selling your device after you get kicked off sprint is a good idea.

I actually left straight talk with the BYOP program (Nexus 4) I had the AT&T sim, which was all fine and dandy until about the second of January. It seemed like all of my towers were either down or just working very poorly. I also got throttled after streaming ONE youtube video during my month (I'm on wifi otherwise) so trust me, you WILL get throttled on ST. I also had problems with the phone not connecting to towers for literally an entire day, and when people tried calling me it said my phone was "disconnected" even though I paid for service 3 months in advance.
My personal opinion is to avoid them, but it really is up to you what you want to deal with. My data with ST was way faster than with sprint, but all I use my phone for is streaming music, which Sprint's 3G can handle rather easily where I live. I would recommend flashing to boost, same phone, speed, and a lower price. Plus you actually know at what point you'll be throttled.
Also, before anybody says anything, I also tried a tmo sim and had the same issues. I get great tmo and AT&T reception where I live also. It seems to me they're cheaping out on their towers.
just my 2 cents.

Is there any way to actually force roaming with Verizon PRL? I flashed that, but it shows that data is going through Sprint 3G, not roaming.

Are you sure its a Verizon Prl that allows data roaming? If I'm not mistaken some of then do and some don't.

I had the same issue with the tom sim. Maybe it's just that straight talk has issues in my area specifically, I'm not sure.

Try 00003... I think for 01337 you need roam control to force roam but I'm not sure. 00003 will keep you on Verizon and I'm enjoying better speeds and the possibility of getting out this horrible contract for free!

This seems hit or miss..I've read reports of people roaming multiple gigabytes and getting no warning while I went just over 300mbs twice and got the letter. Good luck getting out if that's what you so desire. Some will give you flack for this method, but I support you. Sprint advertises "normal" 3G speeds, but for a portion of us the speeds are dismal. I got a free airave out of it so I was happy as my only real issues were at home.

Lol Ive dealt with their horrible data speeds for so long it doesn't even bother me. And paying the extra $10 for data when I only picked up wimax when I was in Albany and it wasn't even that good there was annoying but I sucked it up. But after losing my discount right after I signed on for another 2 years pissed me off.

Rooting/Verizon queston

I am currently on Sprint with the HTC EVO 4G LTE. I love it. However this has more to do with Verizon and rooting then it does the phone itself. I haven't had any problems with Sprint turning my phone off or anything for being rooted, and seeing how this phone has a lot of development for it I would have to assume that it is good to root.
Now the verizon question. How is the network? Is it leaps and bounds above Sprints? Voice/Data (3G/LTE) coverage?
I'm actually s sprint employee and switched to Verizon today and the network is leaps and bounds ahead of the sprint network and the droid DNA is amazing to say the least

Network, really depends where you live...I live in Utah and network is great, much better than Sprint here. If you do switch, as for now don't let it install the ota. It will block you from unlocking the bootloader. At least until the devs find a work around The phone is worth the switch by itself.

For real though...I had Sprints 4G Map up in one tab and Verizons in another...Sprints 4G map looked like a cold and the Verizon map looks like a Disease. Meaning the actual coverage was night and day. I live in Ohio and basically all of ohio is covered in Red (LTE). I would be switching for the network not this phone. Reason is the new M7 for Sprint is this phone with expandable memory and 13 MP camera. I still can't get past the non-removable battery part.
And about the OTA comment. HA I don't flash or update ANY OTA. First thing I do when I get ANY phone is come straight here and tweak my stuff.
Does Verizon do checks though for rooted devices? Is their customer service crappy like I hear? Do they find extra fees and stuff to charge you? Do you ever get dropped calls or choppy calls? I swear Sprints network is a retarded step child. I could have Full bars and have a choppy call. Or be in the middle of an interstate highway and have 1 bar of service. Let alone have Full bars and no bandwidth. Now I am not stupid. I know what is happening.....Sprint sells 4G phones in a state that doesn't have 4G (not that much at least), so their lets say 25,000 customers in a city are all on 2G/3G taking up all the bandwidth, while on Verizon their 25,000 customers are split up on 3G/4G. Our family has been with Sprint for 12 years...So I have to convince the Family to switch (as we are on a 4 people plan).
Oh, dude who left sprint for verizon. Do you know if Verizon does any sort of welcome to Verizon and leaving our competitors kind of deals? Buy one get one free/free activation for devices...etc?
I switched from Sprint to Verizon about a month ago and I only wish I did it sooner. Sprints network was ok a few years ago but unless you are in one of their lte areas, I found trying to use the phone for anything but calls or sms to be useless and frustrating.
I'm paying more on Verizon but for me it is worth it to have a smartphone I can actually use.

The M7 doesn't have a 13 MP camera...Its based off Ultrapixels.
Verizon has great coverage compared to Sprint. It does depend on where you live so you might want to ask people you live around to see if Verizon gets good coverage where you work and live.
Also, if you buy your DNA from Amazon Wireless, its on sale for $50 for new contracts. Verizon also does a student discount if you are a college student or something. Verizon does charge a lot for its services compared to other places in the world, but it has one of the best networks(if not the best) in United States.
I didn't know that about the M7. However, I did read what ultra pixels are. Long story short the M7 will have 3 4.3MP sensors that collectively make a final result image that is supposed to have better color and image reproduction. Sounds interesting none-the-less.

This is the same exact argument I am trying to use with my dad. We are paying 205 (including taxs and fees) on sprint for a 2G (15+ yr old) and 3G (8+ yr old) technology and network. It would only make sense to pay the 230 + Tax and Fees
I came from Sprint because of the beastly specs of the DNA. However I've been plagued with the sim card error, puk locked, and constant dropped data and cellular signals. I've gotten new sims and new phones, still the issue persists. So with all that going on, I'm not sure which is better between Sprint and Verizon. I kinda miss Sprint.

Sounds like you have some horrible luck. The only issue I've had is the SIM card error, once, a month or 2 ago.
