Question : how to disable the sim slot at OS level - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good afternoon,
I am trying to install a piece of software on a galaxy tab. It seems the wifi only version still has a registry input in it referencing the sim slot. The enterprise software we are trying to install sees this, it obviously has no sim card ( being wifi only ) and then fails to connect. On other android tablets which don't have the 3G module, it works fine.
I'm wondering if there's any way at an OS level to remove all references to a 3G module ?
Ideally with out rooting as these will be used across business, it's not a preferable solution but certainly an option if the only way.
thank you

Wifi/Bluetooth tethering with MacBook - impossible?

Hi,
I tried several tools (aNetShare, tetherBlu, Wifi tether) but I can't tether my MacBook to my Hero!
Bluetooth: my Mac is telling me, that no additional BT-service is available except the speakers. I.e. no PAN is available.
Wifi: my Mac shows me the Hero as an access point. But connecting to it has no effect, neither on the Hero neither on my MacBook (except the wifi-icon on the mac is changing to a small console, but greyed out).
Of course, I have rooted my Hero and it's working (tried with several tools). Is tethering Hero and MacBook an impossible mission?
Android doesn't support PAN, only HFP and A2DP.
I haven't tried the apps you mention. DO any of them specifically say that they add PAN to the device?
I'm not familiar with this bluetooth stuff, but with other phones, my MacBook tethers over bluetooth with PAN connection. That's why I assumed that type of connection here, too.
No, not possible with Android.
Like i said, the Android OS only supports HFP and A2DP. If those apps do not specifically add the PAN profile to the hero, and i very much doubt that they do, then you're not gonna get anywhere.
If you need to use the phone as a modem with your mac, you're S.O.L with android!
I have messed around trying to tether my Hero with my Mac book air for a couple of weeks and tried pretty much everthing without any sucess. All the wifi tether apps out there dont seem to like macs and bluetooth failed too.
In the end I found a working solution but its not ideal - however it does work.
Installed Pararellls desktop ( Vmware would probably work too if it has good USB support - never tried it)
Installed windows XP as virtual OS
Installed PDAnet for windows ( mac version doesnt exist )
Installed Phone drivers under windows virtual machine
So now I run windows as virtual machine to tether my HTC hero with my Mac, it works well most of the time, unless the connection is dropped then Pdanet cant see the internet connection any more and requires an OS reboot.
I hope this saves some of you guys the time I lost
naaa.. get the modaco custom rom.
the android-wifi-tether app issue is present for macs and pcs, it is actually do to the hero itself and not your computer, you need to get the custom rom (awifiteth comes pre-installed) and that works perfectly on my macbook!
the custom rom adds iptable support and so it now works..
Is it not possible to make an app that injects this code into the official firmware running Hero's ?
Also, I guess the telco's are helping ensure the manufactures disable any possible way to tether as they have no current mechanism to charge for it unless you buy one of their dongles and pay though the nose for another contract

No, the official firmware is "non-rooted," meaning that you and your downloaded apps won't be able to access the Linux system on a read-write basis, which is necessary for tethering apps, as they likely all need to change the iptables to alter the way network routing occurs within the phone.
But possible once someone works out how to root the latest firmware ?
If someone does this, I would pay gladly for the app if it allowed me to use the Hero as a 3G/HSDPA modem.

AP40 strange WIFI Problem

Hi,
I just flashed AP40 and did the SPL35 upgrade. Everything fine.
Without inserted SIM and SD-Card, WIFI works.
If I insert SIM and SD-Card, WIFI still works, but can't connect to any Access Point (I have several).
Strange...
Any ideas?
Trying to flash avengerpenguin's WM6.5 now.
Radio is 1.57, I had MichyPrima's WM61 before and WIFI was working well.
Cheers,
vma
Works again with averngerpenguin's WM6.5 and SIM/SD inserted.
Cheers,
vma
Hi again...
After trying out WM6.5 I concluded that I did not like it. avengerpenguin did a great job, but unfortunatly I can't say the same from Microsoft.
The menu's are horrible, everything is much more scattered around and much less productive than WM6.1.
Enough said, I installed AP40 again. First thing I tried out was to insert the SIM and check WIFI. It worked, so I was happy and got everything back together (syncing, getting all the shortcuts back, etc.).
It was only when I tried to connect to my BT headset that I found out that it wasn't working. I turned on WIFI and now it is as before: sees the AP's, but doesnt connect!
Any ideas what may be causing it? Can it be the operator customisation?
This really sucks!
EDIT:
BT works now, but was still kind of strange to connect headset. In doubt I still plead in favour of the Athena.
WIFI, however is not working, neither with or without SIM inserted. My settings are pretty simple, SHARED, WEP and a single 128bit key.
And I am 100% sure the settings are correct, because it did work right after flashing. Only after some while did it stop. I just installed MS Voice Command (can't hardly be the cause).
I searched th ewhole forum, I know it's not the MAC problem and yep, I tried the turning off all security on my router.
Would be great to hear any ideas.
Thanks,
vma
Similar problem with wifi.

yes, I've got similar problem with wifi. After managing to activate it (switch wifi on) through the pain though, it still useless, unable to connect to any access point with any settings. It can be even unsecured network. On my home router I removed all security and made it open with default compatibility settings, but no luck! All my other windows mobile PDAs (Kaiser and universal) get connected to those access points with no problems.
Seems nobody can give any good advise for this case in this forum.

[Q] Gingerbread mobile data problem with Chinese tablet

I have a no name Chinese 7 inch Tablet (Kinpad I200), but it works suprisingly well. It has a Cortex A8 processor, 800 Mhz speed, built-in 2G and 3G modul (SIM card), etc. The op. system is Android 2.3.3.
The only big problem I have with that tablet is related to its mobile data service. After switching on the device, the 3G icon is on, and it works normally, up- and downloading data with high speed. But if I (a) lost the 3G signal because there is no continuous coverage where I am, or (b) switch on the WiFi connenction -- I never regain the 3G (nor Edge or GPRS) connention until restarting the whole system. Then I have data service again, even 10 hours or longer, but after another WiFi session or moving a poor-coverage area, the problem reproduces itself.
Reading different forums I have realised that different Gingerbread-powered devices used to have this (or similar) problem and the manufacturers issued firmware upgrades to resolve it. Although my tablet is Chinese, its manufacturer also has issued a couple of OTA updates so far and I installed all, but the data problem remained.
So my questions are:
1. Is there an app that could bypass the Gingerbread built-in mobile data handling and manage the connenction itself? (I am asking this because I learned that Android does not allow access to those settings from 2.3 Gingerbread version -- maybe this is the origin of the problem...)
2. If there is not any 3rd party application, that would bring back the data connection, maybe there is a way to simply restart the mobil data service (without resetting the whole device). -- It also would be some kind of workaround, because it is quicker than make a whole reset.
Thanks in advance for any suggestion or help!
Cheers,
ctibor

[Q] Reverse Wifi Tether?

Have looked fairly thoroughly for about 2 days with no success.
I got the OTA update and realized too late that I've lost my wifi tether capability.
Currently, I have a stock Raze Maxx was using foxfi
I also have a Nook Tablet setup for dual boot via SD into cm7 (this is the device needing connectivity)
The Nook doesn’t have Bluetooth, and a USB option will not fit my needs so wifi is the only option.
Question:
Is there a way to accomplish this without rooting my moto?
I’ve checked for existing solutions, no luck. The only idea I’ve got is maybe if I can get my cm7 hosting a hotspot (without internet), then connect with my moto and then somehow access the internet that way.
Will this work?
If so, any suggestions of software to potentially use?

Setup my internet connection

Hi 4 all!
Today I've got my Gear S. After I inserted the SIM card in to it, I've tried to set-up the internet connection, but when I jump in to the Access point names, I can't add a new one. The menu is empty and I can' set-up anything. The mobile internet provider doesn't care about my problem, because they say they do not use Tizen OS and therefore don't offer any suggestions or help.
Please anyone can help me?

Have you updated your watch to the latest firmware/software also update the Gear manager to the latest
@Uniquebarbee: Tks for your interest about my problem! Finally I did it... I made the update for the OS and now I can add a new APN. Off course, the update doesn't resolve all my issues with the watch, but is good to know that I didn't throw away 400 Euro.
My real problem now, is that I don't have a device compatible with the watch (I did the update with a borrowed S5) to make all the tuning that is necessary... in fact I've got a Samsung galaxy note 10.1(2012) tablet and I was hoping to synchronize, but unfortunately it can not install the manager.
I can't understand why a lot of setting require a bluetooth connection, instead to use the wi-fi connection or better, the 3G on the SIM. The watch is not as independent as I thought and now I have to dig on internet to find how can I use it on full capacity.
