Its should never update on its own. It usually asks you if you want to update. I hear though, as long as you got SuperSU and keep that up to date, the binaries prevent any patching to stop root access.
Delete or freeze SDM 1.0 in TB.
if you have a custom recovery installed dont worry. it will download the OTA but wont be able to install it

How did you confirm that it didn't work? Device status "Modified" after using ExynosAbuse usually means it worked. I would try to install Titanium backup (Tibu) or some other program that requires root and if it works then you know you have root.
If you have root use Tibu to freeze SDM 1.0 to keep the update from happening if you want to use the first developer created method to unlock your boot loader so that you can flash ROMs. You can use the later new method to unlock the boot loader if you accept the update.
I have titanium back up but it says I dont have root access... basically what im wanting to know is, is it okay it try another root method even though it says my device is modified...

Yes just root again.

I want to know for the future. Lets say I'm on the ota me7 with root. And a new ota comes out if I take it. It'll upgrade and I lose root right?
Also if I wanted to remove root if I did a hard reset would that do the trick as well? From the stock recovery menu.

If you have root, pay for and install Titanium Backup.
Use Titanium Backup to freeze SDM and FWupdate apps so you will never get another OTA update again.
What if I want otas..

If you take an ota you will lose root.
A hard reset will not remove root, I have tried.

If you want the otas then just disregard all of the good information found in these threads and take them.
But don't be surprised if the next ota locks things down further.

Im asking if there's any fool proof ways to root this configuration because i just bought the phone and dont wont to brick it like my s3 hard bricked. Any help or comments appreciated, thinking about just updating to 4.3 and waiting for a root method with that.
Read this. Used this guide for both my gs4's with zero issues

Don't update. You'll lose your ability to have a real custom recovery. Just stay on MDK and root. Then you can go ahead and flash a 4.3 ROM.

Should i factory reset and root before activating the phone with verizon?
I personally would just root, install custom recovery then wipe. After that pick a rom as most have ota updates disabled. Or install titanium backup pro and freeze the update apk's (I forget the file names)

I'm sure it's to disable hd voice. I've had to manually disable hundreds in the past week.

I re-rooted with io root after update.
I did not see any OTA update for my phone? Can you do System update (did not work) or have to wait for OTA?

Glad to hear it worked smoothly for you! I'm about to do the same.
EDIT: Smoothly re-Rooted
I can also confirm IO Root worked like a charm after this update.
So best thing to do is return to stock the re-root??
I was stock rooted. Took the update. Re rooted. That's all.

Just letting you all know that one of the changes it makes is to enable lte bands 26 and 41
another is it removed twrp as my recovery and replaced it with the stock recovery.

Guys...it takes like a minute to reroot using iorootv11. Just do it after the OTA update. There is no point of trying to use apps to try to preserve root when it is so simple.
Any chance we'll see a TWRP flashable version of stock ZV8? I'd use the LG tool to start over, update to ZV8, root, etc., but then I'd have to apply all the xposed mods, set things how they were etc. I tried flashing stock recovery, then doing the update the normal way, but it led to a bootloop and didn't work.
Edit - Or can someone tell me how they flashed stock recovery, where I can get the recovery, and whether or not it worked? I got my stock recovery zip from a Sprint user in the the TWRP thread, but could only flash it via flashify. Flashing the zip via TWRP would not work.

Is there anyway to run the update from Verizon on TWRP? Every time it tries to update it reboots into the custom recovery. I know the file for the update is on the phone. Does anybody have the name of it or how to run it?

If you want to take the OTA you need to revert back to stock recovery.
There is a ROM that is pretty much the same as the 4.4.2 OTA in the development section that can be flashed via TWRP
Hey if you want PM me and I'll help you revert back to stock with keeping your root and updating to KitKat and getting your recovery back. There is no way at all to use the Verizon OTA with a custom recovery.. It is rebooting to TWRP because by default when flashing the OTA it is meant to boot to your stock recovery which is designed to flash carrier updates. When it hits TWRP it fails because it sees that its not the stock recovery. You need to either fastboot back the stock recovery which is in Flyhalfs recovery thread or you need to RUU.. But in any event I'm here if you want some solid help and I can get it done quickly for you...
