Another Galaxy S4 Setup Guide - Settings, Tweaks, Apps - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hey guys. Just came back to Android after a 3 year stint with Apple. Made a guide for setting up the S4 from the prespective of a long time iPhone owner. Linked a few other threads on XDA so thought I should post the guide. Since I cannot yet post links, feel free to check it out here through some copy and paste:

Tmobile TV and Think Office

Hi. I am a first time poster but a long time follower. This past week I rooted to Nero V5. However there are two apps that I no longer have that I want but can't find. Tmobile TV no longer shows up in the market and Think Office is in the market but didnt the Vibrant come with the whole version for free. I am wondering how I can get these back. Sorry if this has been answered somewhere, but I did a search and could not find anything. I am also a noob to most of this stuff so forgive me there. Any help would be appreciated.

Brace yourself for the ****storm that you have caused upon yourself for posting in the development section my friend
nah, he is a new member and does not know better.
I wasn't going to post in here, but I thought since I had a custom rom it might be relevant. I am sorry for that. Thanks.
Here is a RIP of the Galaxy Tab's ThinkFree
It's a little bit more updated, and has tabbed browsing in spreadsheet at least.
Bad link ...on that link ... "File deleted" ... Oh well ...

Completely new to rooting.

Hi all,
I am very fresh to this forum. Even though I got my account created in 2006 on this website I never used it.
All over the internet and the forums people mention about rooting the phones. I never really cared about rooting my phone out of the fear of bricking it. So I always put that option away. Now its serious time to learn it, as I am understanding the real benefits of it.
I own a Samsung Galaxy Note LTE SGH -i717D which is from the carrier Telus in Canada. How do I start of with rooting on this device? What is the latest version of Android available for this device for rooting? Are the custom ROMS really flawless?
Somebody please kindly help me get rid of the starting trouble I have.
Thanks all.

This has got to be the easiest method of rooting. It's what I've used on a few different phones and has never failed me!
Custom roms vary in stability. If they are based on source code they are going to be more stable than others. They will say "built from official source". Other roms can be just as stable depending on the developer and how much effort was put into the rom. You have to read the threads on the roms to compare issues if any, then pick the one you want to try.
The best advice I can give you is before you install or flash anything you verify it's for your device, and read the instructions at LEAST twice!
Welcome to xda ... I suggest you first read the xda rules. This is the general forum. Not for questions. There is a Q &A forum to ask questions in ... After searching.
That said ... Super everything thread is for you.

Admin, my intention isn't to hijack this thread. But I thought I'd ask prior to starting a new thread since I having the same concern, and before I get flamed. Please let me know which approach would be suitable to ask more questions while staying on topic.
I've been researching and reading tons of information everywhere. However I reached the conclusion that the more I read the more confusing it became. Whenever I thought I was ready to take the plunge, It's so overwhelming even figuring out what's current or what's outdated methods and files needed - I simply can't catch up without direct assistance.
OP: Thanks so much for starting this thread. For me, being a long time Android OS lover, yet entirely newbie when it comes to rooting jargons - I couldn't have said it any better - you took the words right out of my mouth!!!... The only tiny difference is that I have the SGH -i717R (Rogers).

Hi Lousk,
I know its really hard for a newbie to even think of where to start when it comes to rooting, because there are tons of information on rooting all over the internet and moreover confusion too. I learned it the hard way and I am glad to say now that I came out with flying colors. As with each official update, my device was getting totally sluggish, non responsive and out of all very little battery life. I couldn't stand this at all, one evening I sat on the internet, took the whole night before starting to do on anything with my device.
I didn't install any custom roms, but I rooted it which in turn helped me turn off a lot of services running in the background and also uninstall all the Samsung bloats, mainly the touchwiz. That thing is really resource hungry. Now my device is working at lightning speed and I have a feeling that it wont be obsolete in another 10 years.
I have all the files and also the instructions on rooting on my drive, unfortunately XDA is not allowing me to paste the link over here unless I have made 10 posts. They say it is just to prevent spams. If you are willing to give me your email id I can sent the link to you.
Go ahead and root your device to get the full potential of your unit.
Good luck,
Sumesh

[Q] Brand new to Android/need help

Hi guys I just switched over to Verizon Wireless and changed my phone to Samsung Galaxy S4.
I've been with Apple and iPhone ever since the first generation iPhone came out, meaning I'm only familiar with iOS and iPhones
Now I've jailbroken my iphones a crap ton of times, but I have no clue on what to do anything with Android xD
Before switching over, I did some basic research on Android operating system and the Galaxy phones, and from what I found out, Android is a hell of a lot more customizable, open source platform, and there are a lot of crazy stuff you can do with it
I have some basic questions about rooting as a whole
1. What is the %/chance of my Galaxy S4 becoming bricked?
2. How do I backup all my contacts, apps, games, music, photos and such on Android?
3. Is there a software for Android like how Apple had iTunes?
4. If I mess something up and my phone becomes bricked, is there any way to fix it without replacing phone?
5. Moderator Edit - We don't do that here
6. Is there an Installous/Vshare type program for Android phones?
Thank you!

Ill answer your first question. There is always a chance of bricking your phone when rooting and flashing custom roms and mods to your phone. But if you follow the instructions of whatever root method you choose to a tee, you should be fine. I was new to rooting when I got my s3 and I followed the instructions and read as much as I could, and everything went perfect. Check android developement for verizon s4 for all your rooting needs.

To answer questions 5 and 6...
Perhaps you missed the word "developers" in the name of the site. Coming to a community of developers and asking advice how how to screw them over is akin to being an invited guest in someone's house and arbitrarily spitting in their face. Pony up and pay for the apps if their paid.

We do not do warez or cracked apps, nor do we discuss/offer piracy hints or guidance here...
Please refrain from this style of questioning in the future. You, as well as any other user, should be fully educating themselves prior to posting "general" questions that have already been answered. Please read and study, all of your questions are already answered.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Mega - sprint/tether hotspot block

Hi all,
So this is my first time posting, but I've read up on many posts. Last week, I found a thread here showing how to tether/hotspot my Nexus 5 without rooting. It involved downloading the most recent Android apk file, opening a dos cmd, changing the tether_dun value to zero, and debugging my N5 afterward. Worked like a charm. However, now I cannot find that threat, and I would really like to have that on hand. I've searched, and googled, and for some reason cannot find it. Soooo if anyone has that link or info on hand, could you please post it here?
Also, I'm trying to do the same thing for my dad's Galaxy Mega. We are on Sprint, and he currently has 4.2.2. I am going to wait for the 4.4 to come out for his phone before doing it, but I would like to give him the same hotspot/tethering capabilities without rooting or installing any apps. Is it the same as for my N5 on Kit Kat? Or is there something else I have to be careful of because of all the Samsung software involved?
Please let me know! I google and searched here for about an hour and kept being redirected to Galaxy S4 threads.

Newbie seeks simple clear reliable tutorial to upgrade new Fire 7 (2015) to NEXUS

Have just bought a Fire 7 (2015 OS 5.3.2.0) with intention to make it as much 'Nexus' like as possible as I don't want closed wall or marketing. I am inexperienced with Android. I searched the Q&A Noobs subforum with 'flashfire 7' as anything more specific draws blank - but then it says its dedicated to Gen 4 2014. The 3 posts assume Samsung or other open devices, whereas the Fire7 has no access to Playstore in order to DL 'Flashfire'. I read the xdadevelopers "Fresh installation from FireOS via FlashFire 0.50".<-it assumes user is knowledgable, which I am not.
Is there a subforum for Fire HD7 (2015) where I can ask for simple clear reliable Noob guide to installing NEXUS ROM, if not where should I post ?
Where is the subforum for Fire HD7 (2015) ?

I registered on xda-developers forum on 11 December in hope of finding a Noob guide to installing NEXUS ROM on Fire HD7 (2015), but non found and nearest subforum to post a request for this, appears to be the one for Fire HD7 & HD8 (2014), so my post just asks if you have a subforum more uptodate than 2014 to cover the current (2015) generation of HD7.
Sadly, no response with help on even that the last 6 days. Got a DM from site admin 4 days back with "I work over at XDA-Developers. Yes, there are actually human beings on the other side! I just wanted to let you know that we really appreciate you joining our community and hope that you get great value" to which I replied next day, with the post I intended to put, pointing out I have only a few days to return the tablet to amazon if not easy to switch ROM to vanilla Android, as this is my last weekend before departing overseas. Can anyone help a newbie on this, be it name of right subforum to put, ....
or better still a textual (pref non-video, as being on the go, I have only 3G capped connection) tutorial to show how Noobs can reliably change a virgin Fire 7 (2015, V5.3.2.0), describing all necessary steps clearly from 'closed garden' Fire 7 to a full open 'NEXUS'. ?
