i am probably wanting to come to this phone from the gnex.i like everything about the phone except the memory. should i just for a newer phone, root and debloat, or maybe buy the note 2, or buy a 32 s3?

anyone?
SD card? I'm coming from GNex too. Using it now. But I've got the s4 and its pretty dang amazing. My wife has a note 2 and its nice but I much prefer the better screen.
Seems a 32 or even just a 16gb would equal or exceed what memory you have on GNex.

I've went from gnex to s3 to note 2 to s4. All new devices are nice. But if you wait there is no point in upgrading. You can't always wait for the next best thing. Phone technology progresses too fast. Get the current hipster phone. S4

went from a gnex to the S4 and absolutely loving. so happy i made the switch
GNex to S4 guy here. The S4 1-ups the Nexus in every way but one. Obviously the ability to run stock android. I'm confident that someday this will be possible. I wouldn't wait any longer.

Gnex to s4 here too. I love the phone. I think the note 2 does not have a 32GB version also. And with foldermount I can use my sdcard for my apps.

true. wait! one more question. how good is app storage? like i have 300 apps on my 32GB GNEX. how many could the s4 hold?
It's half the size and bloated. Do the math. Buy it. Custom rom it.

ok. ill probably get a debloated stock and re-bloat the few apps i want
I went from the GNex to the S4 as well. Looked into the S3, and the specs & features didn't impress me enough to make the jump. I have a Note 10.1 as my tablet, but am not a real phablet person, so I passed on the Note 2 as well. The S4 was well worth the wait. I love everything about the phone. Thought I was going to have major qualms with the internal storage or the battery life, but don't. As far as internal storage, on any given day I have between 75-95 apps installed (that number includes the pre-installed ones as well, but those only account for a small portion) and I still have plenty of space left on my internal memory. I bought a 64GB Samsung Pro Micro SD card, and use that to store all of my music, photos, and personal files. The battery life on this phone, coming from the GNex, is phenomenal. By the end of the life on my GNex, I was lucky to get 6 hours out of my phone before it died. But even on it's best days, I never got about 10 hours. On the S4, I'm getting no less than 19 hours, and so far have managed to get 24 on my best day. And that is without going crazy and disabling everything on the phone, or trying not to turn it on too much because I want to conserve battery life. I let all of my stuff that is important to me sync. I tweaked the frequency a bit, but that was it. Honestly, it is worth the upgrade. Yes, there are things I miss about stock Android, but those are pretty much cancelled out by everything great that this phone brings to the table.
Anyway, that was a long winded way of saying, yes, it is worth the upgrade. Everyone is right, if you keep holding out for the next big thing, you will always be waiting, because there is always something new on the horizon.

So I had my GS3 for about 3 months before it experienced a 2 foot drop shattering not just the digitizer but the LCD as well. The phone was a good phone, I originally had an Incredible, moved up to the Rezound (which I loved) and then the GS3. What I have learned about Samsung is that the build quality isn't as solid as HTC's (from my experiences). I was thinking about going back to HTC with the DNA.
I just wanted some input from people who own the phone and what their thoughts are about it. Practicality, Functionality, BATTERY LIFE (very important to me) and etc.
Any comments, concerns or suggestion would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance

For all intensive purposes the battery life is the same, if not slightly better than the s3.
And functionality and practicality is determined by you, we can't answer it for you.

Battery life, for me, is leaps and bounds above my s3. I NEVER got 5 hours of screen time on the s3.
Please don't touch my "Thanks" button, it doesn't like you...
Hmm. I am surprised to hear that about the battery life. I haven't read too much about the development of the DNA, is there the whole S-On or S-Off thing that the Rez had? haha
Do you guys notice a difference with the Quad core setup? GS3's dual was very quick and responsive.
Our phone is s on for the time being unless you want to send it to someone and have it opened up. But it really doesn't matter. Only things it changes is that we can't change the splash screen and radios and we have to use an app to flash kernels, besides that it is fine.
And it isn't any smoother per say, but i have seen the s3 get laggy every once in a while, that doesn't happen on the DNA. And apps definitely open faster on the DNA. And very intensive games run better.

I have the S3 and DNA and the battery life is virtually identical for me. Get about 4 hours screen time on both and about 15 hours with a full charge. I have the quad core S3 (international version) and the difference in performance is noticeable. On my S3 (which has 1gb of Ram) I would get lots of redraws on the home screen. Sure custom Rom's/kernels helped but did not totally resolve them. On the DNA I see no redraws or lag. Overall I enjoy the experience of the DNA more than I do my S3 so unless I am going on a long trip, my S3 stays in my desk drawer.
thank you guys for the replies. My main concern is S-Off, I know on the rezzy it made a huge difference (way easier to flash kernels/roms and etc.) Hopefully it isn't as complicated here with S-On. And I'm glad to hear about the battery life. I will most probably be purchasing one soon.
Definitely going to invest in good case.
***EDIT
only thing I am concerned about is not having an SD card slot. -__-
With s on you flash roms like any other phone, and kernels you use an app called flash image gui to flash the boot.img then you just flash the modules in recovery.

Lol if battery life is a concern you are definitely looking at the wrong phone. If anyone tells you different they are in denial. Htc, along with every reviewer on the net about the Dna have all acknowledged the poor performance of the battery.
If you are looking for the best phone out, the note 2 absolutely destroys the DNA. The only thing the dna has over the note 2 is screen resolution.... on paper lol. The note 2 screen is amazing. Honestly just grab one and take a look. Add in the amazing software ( split screen, pop up browser, pop up note and pop up movie player that can all be on the screen at the same time), spen, redonkulous battery life, sd card slot, ability to replace battery and amazing support and you have greatest phone on the market. Hope this helps!

Lol its funny that your phone seems to be the anomaly. Everyone, including HTC THEMSELVES, have acknowledged the poor battery performance. Just look at the size of your battery vs. The amount of pixels the dna is pushing. Do the math man there is reason everyone ( except for a few in denial dna owners) has pointed to the battery peeformance. Living in denial my friend. If you like your dna, kudos to you. Enjoy carrying that phone charger around all day.
If the only bad thing you can say about the note 2 is the size thats a personal thing. Im 5 11 and this phone fits in my hand and pocket beautifully. My girlfriend is 5 5 and she has no problem what so ever with the note. That speaks dividends to how great the note is if the only bad thing you can say about it is the size. Note 2 ftw

Umm....no. are you serious? Look at the polls around net of touchwiz vs. Sense vs. stock. Most people prefer stock, then touchwiz and lastly sense. One of the biggest drawbacks of sense is the recent app drawer. Its beyond puzzling. Why would take up entire screen to see recent apps, including cutting away the app drawer, pull down menu and home screen? Very inefficient.

Note 2 has bigger and brighter screen, and longer lasting battery than S3. Other than that, they are very similar.
DNA doesn't have a removable battery or allow you to add more storage. You're pretty much stuck with 16gig, which is what the Note 2 comes standard with, but the Note 2 allows you to expand up to an additional 64 gigs.
This topic HAS been beaten to death...but the Note 2 still wins

Don't forget the s-pen! That's the main reason I went with the note (along with screen second and battery third; and wanting to leave iOS - unrankable).
You might also wait until march to see what the S4 will offer. If you dont want to wait, most people a very very happy with their Note 2. I especially love the Note 2's battery life.
Whatever your choice is, good luck. And please search before you post. There are several people that dont mind helping, but it can be frustrating to help those who dont help themselves.

The SGS4 is likely 6-8 months off at this point. Their last release was in the summer, and every release before that was in the summer in the US (late spring internationally). If you want a phone now, I'd say get the Note 2, if you can wait, this coming summer/fall looks like it will be amazing

The international release has been 3-4 months before US Carrier release so far, so the earliest you'd see it is June/July in the US on VZW.

Lol I remember selling that phone when I worked for Vzw. It was great at the time but now...well you already know. I got my note2 on Xmas eve and I can't think of any other device I would own at this point. The spen opens up so many options. I find myself officially spoiled after owning this. No other phone on Verizon in my opinion can rival the Note2 unless you can't deal with the size.
Even Verizon and lg said the phone sucked. That's why the released the spectrum so quick

I wasnt saying the phone will be out in march. I said wait until march to see what it will have to offer. I was referring to it being announced in march. Either ar MWC or its own event.
Just to be clear: I agree the S4 will more than likely not be available for purchase until July in the US.
On a side note: my gf cousin works for a company that plans big events for corporations. They have been working on something big for Samsung. He was in town for christmas and was pretty much on the phone (ironically an iPhone) the whole time having teleconferences with Korea. My guess is the S4 but they dont get told the actual product until a couple of weeks out.

I think the Note 2 is the best phone out right now. All phones have compromises. S3 only has 1gb of RAM, DNA doesn't have expandable storage and battery life is so/so.
I've only had the note 2 a few days, but I've been a little disappointed with battery life. I'm coming from a Rezound with extended battery (2750mah). The battery life is similar to that and the Rezound got bashed for poor battery life. I was expecting a little more. Guessing it might get better after a few charge cycles. I find myself having to charge about an hour a night. The good thing is that it is a 2amp charger so it charges fast.

The S3 and the Note 2 should never ever be compared. They are totally different devices in almost every way possible. Not bashing you kintwofan, or anyone in particular, just saying these 2 devices should not even be in the same sentence.
It's more like DNA vs S3/4, or do I want a mini tablet with a Wacom pen.
Personally at this point I recommend you wait another month for the S4 reveal and see if that floats your boat OP. I would never recommend an S3 to someone, it's 2013. Especially not a US variant S3 which has horrible specs compared to most devices released in the last 6 months. So you want someone who owns a Note 2's opinion OP? Wait a month.

Im on Clean Rom, and since the phone is near perfect, hasnt really been a need for any of the devs to do any work.
I have both the Note 2 and S3 and prefer the S3 over the Note. Both phones are great, but I personally like the S3 better. The S3 is stock / rooted and the Note 2 is stock / unrooted which may have something to do w/ it. It seems there's more to do with the S3 as far as the Dev community, it's not too big and I have never had any issues with it. I've had the Note 2 for about 4 weeks now and sometimes it won't send a text message until I restart the phone.
So... I have the DNA and im getting the dreaded Sim card error even after the update.... Verizon has offered to replace the phone with any other device besides the GS4, because there is no stock of the Gs4 yet.
What would you choose and why....
Im thinking I just just get the GS3, because its S-OFF and i can run cyanogen Mod 10.1 easily....
But I havent used a motorola in a long time, and Maybe it would be fun to have a Razr HD MAXX, for insane battery life. that could be fun...
Any suggestions?

IMO going to the S3 would be a step backwards. I would either wait for S4 to come in stock, or get a Note II. Without having S-OFF on my DNA I would much prefer the Note II, and overall actually even with S-OFF I would still probably prefer the Note II.
Any idea how long it takes for warranty replacement stocks to build up? A month? If so, ill just wait and snag the Gs4...
If not, i agree the Note 2 is probably my best bet. A friend had one and I actually kind of enjoyed using it the other day. Its big, yea, and its screen is only 720p... but could i really tell? NO....
I cleaned the contacts on my sim, and reinserted it.. I hope to stay with the DNA, but if this is giving me hell consistently sounds like i should go Note 2.
anyone else have an opinion

Once you have tasted the DNA Screen & Speed, you will disappointed with the GS3, I got the GS3 and Yes you will really tell 720p resolution Cartoonist noticeable same goes to the Note II. HTC One or SG4 JB 4.2.2 ROM you will fly with 1.7 - 1.9 GHz Quad Core
honestly, i wouldnt trade this phone for the One or any samsung. i love how thin and sexy this phone is. has more than enough speed. and i love sense 5. stick with the DNA
The S4 is smooth. I've used it. Nature UX, while filled with bloat is more appealing to the eye than Sense.
Both machines will not have a noticeable performance difference. Scores don't mean diddly, reviews don't mean crap either. Drop by a store, spend 30 minutes with one, and see for yourself.
If I HAD to trade and couldn't have a S4, the two ONLY two phones I would get are a Note II and a Nexus 4.
I have used both in person and s 4 was faster imo.

1999. Startac VIP Series, PCS digital phone, bought and used in Korea, brought it back home to U.S. and couldnt even get it turned on because the networks were still analog.. That was a truly great phone. One of the best flip phones ever built, Period. But the DNA is still the best phone out.
Ok so I'm thinking of switching from my S4 to the DNA. I have a few questions, also I'm rooted on the s4.
1) how is the storage on the DNA, with root, like holding roms and the back ups?
2) can you view emojis on Facebook and instagram without root or do you have to be running a ROM?
3) what kinda photo modes are there? S4 has burst, sport, and a lot more
4) how's the battery life?
5)what's the biggest complaint about the DNA

DNA gets a tad more space to us with root battery life is great with uv and oc depending if you know how far the phone can go.
My biggest complain was the colors were not as good compared to other phones but now with the crpalalmer and baeups kernals have it so it looks great. Now if you are a flashaholic there's not as much as Samsung but the good thing is that there are a lot more roms then when I got the phone 6 months ago

1.) Storage is so-so. If you can stream most of your music and stuff you'll be fine. I was carrying around alot of music and stuff on my phone and that just wasn't cutting it. So you need to be selective about what you keep stored on the phone. The phone will work with USB-OTG cables though so keep that in mind.
2.) I'm not sure about the emojis.
3.) The phone has burst with best shot. It'll just pick out the best shot out of the burst of pictures. The burst feature is also extremely fast. Much faster then my Sony digital camera.
4.) Battery life is excellent. Expect 3 hours of screen life. If you use 3 hours of screen life as soon as you pull it off the charger it's gonna die. If you use 3 hours of screen life over the course of 18 hours it'll die then.
5.) The biggest complaint initially was that we didn't have s-off/root for the DNA when I first came over. Now that we do and we have many roms to choose from it's not that big of a deal. The phone is really awesome and well worth it. I wouldn't say it's an upgrade from the S4 but I think it can trade blows with the S4. As mentioned above the colors with the new kernels are much better and the screen is just magnificent. The only other complaint I have about the DNA is that it isn't the One.
Thanks guys. I'm still debating on it. I've always loved HTC. I've had the inc1, inc2, rezound so I'm thinking I'd like to have this one too. Just wish it had a 32gb edition.
And the emojis are the little android characters like smilies.

Have the s4 also but definitely prefer using my DNA. For me storage isn't a problem. With the DNA I get a anywhere from 3.5 to a little more than 4 hours screen on time with the s4 easily 6 hours. Biggest complaint? Just wished HTC had gone a bit bigger on the battery but that still doesn't stop me from choosing to use it over the s4. The feel of this beauty in hand just craps on the s4.

I think the thing I like best about the DNA vs. the S4 is the fully unlockable bootloader. The S4 does not have this. There is the bootloader bypass method, but no true unlock. And Samsungs latest kernels block root on a kernel level, so I could see development on the non-GPE S4 drying up all of a sudden.
I also like the fact that the DNA is fully gsm unlocked.
Thanks guys. I'm really considering it. I was messing with my old rezound and it made me miss HTC. I'm stuck between trading for a DNA or waiting for Verizon to drop the HTC one.

Honestly the dna is an incredible device but it is not the one. If I were you I would go for the newer one then the dna (boom sound, 4.7 instead of 5 inch screen, and it's freaking made of metal) if you choose the dna it will not disappoint by any means though.

Thats what i am thinking about doing what do you guys think?
It seems like there are a few concerns. first a slightly smaller screen.... But i might be ok with that. i have a nexus 7 LTE if i want a bigger screen.
No sd card.... its a concern but i never use that much space anyways.
None removable battery. Maybe my biggest issue. as i have a 6400 and a 9300 batter for my note 2. I dont use them all the time but they are nice to have.
My biggest reason to get a new phone is the better camara. i have a 19 month old at home and my favorite thing to do is take pictures. The cpu upgrade would be sweet also.
*EDIT*
if this patch locked the bootloader i am leaving verizon
This question may have been asked already but I made the exact change and I could not be happier. Don't get me wrong I loved the Note 2 and was waiting for the 3 and then this phone came out. It basically has similar internals except for the ram, removable battery and sd slot. All of which are for personal preference.
As far as real life this phone easily makes the day for me. To me the camera is great. It is already rooted. With the verizon coupon I got it for $140 over the Internet. You really can't go wrong. Just my 2 cents.

Since you had the note 2 like me, can u easily use the g2 one handed now?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I can use it with ease. My wife has the S4 and I did not want to get that. The G2 works great with one handed operation.

Coming from a note 2 and lumia 928. Sold them both. The G2 (imo) destroys them both. (Imo) I dint have ANY of the issues I see must complaints about here on the boards. It keeps getting better every day.

Ex-Note 2 and HTC One user here. Got the G2 and couldn't be happier. The only reason you should stick with the Note 2 (or get the Note 3) is if you use the stylus a lot. The G2's smaller screen is not an issue because it's a higher resolution and just looks awesome. It's 4:13PM right now...I streamed about 3 hours worth of music using LTE through Google Play to my bluetooth headphones, studied my PDF textbook for about 30 minutes, and did about 30 minutes of web browsing and my G2 is only down to 84%. Best battery life I've ever had in a phone :good:
I might be getting a G2 too
ex note 2 user here, my friend is asking me every day to sell it to him, i may let it down when the G2 hit our local stores.
