Play Store Speeds Ridiculously Slow on Wifi - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry if this is the wrong thread and I've looked across the entire Internet and I'm about to pull my hair out.
Across all three of my devices; Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S3, and Nexus 4, my download speeds for downloading and updating apps on the Google Play Store have been unbearably slow, taking 20+ minutes to download 5mb. Only while using wifi though. HSPA+ data through T-Mobile is quick and painless.
I have Verizon Fios as my ISP. I've seen numerous other threads complaining about this issue across the Web but none offer any type of explanation or solution. While restarting the router/modem alleviates the problem for a few minutes, it's no use..
Also, might I add that YouTube has been unusable as well do to awful buffering. I think there may be a conflict between Fios and Google's servers. Whatever this is, I'm getting fed up. I can't download or update any apps on my Nexus 4 that I just got today, not to mention on any of my devices at all. Can someone offer any insight on this very annoying and unexplainable issue?
PS: I know it's not my Internet, speed tests reveal 20megs down and 5 up across all three devices and general Internet usage is awesome. Only YouTube and the Play Store have been affected.

Verizon FIOS + Google Services = PAIN
The exact thing is happening with my FIOS pipe to Google services!
Youtube has been challenges for months, but this past week Google Play has become completely useless from all my Android devices!
However, if I switch over to Verizon Wireless LTE connection, things SCREAM. Feels like Verizon wants me to use my Wireless data plan instead of my unlimited fiber fire hose! What the heck.
Rest of my Fios Internet service screams, seems to be mainly Google Services.
Nothing I have done has changed anything. I wish you had the answer or I had one that I could share. Needless to say, you are NOT alone in the pain!

same here
Just started noticing it this evening. I'm in NYC area with FiOS. Has been about 3 hours trying to update 4 apps at about 20 MB total size. Get 31mbps down on speedtest.net right now.

This is ridiculous. It's not like I can just use mobile data for everything either, I only have 2gb a month through T-Mobile.
YouTube has been TERRIBLE over the past few months, I'd have to agree with you.
Just recently Google Play is starting to suffer the same fate. What should we do?!

If I do anything network based that is NOT related to Google I get really great performance (as I would expect across FIOS). Start anything Google service related and it drops to nothing in a matter of seconds.
I have tried Android SDK image (just for laughs) on my development desktop and Google Services in it are just as network challenged. That would verify that is a Verizon/Google issue. That would be why none of my other service: Netflix, Amazon Stream, etc are effected.
I have the same problem with Youtube on my desktop as well. Things start and then just turn into a stuttering nightmare if they load at all.
Really Verizon!? Fiber and it cant stream 360 youtube videos. I think my old dialup connection could do that years ago.

Would calling up Verizon be a good idea?

Router DNS
Well as of today things are working better for me (excluding youtube of course) after I changed my routers DNS to use Google public DNS 8.8.4.4 & 8.8.8.8 instead of Verizon.
It seems to odd for it to be coincident that I changed it and restarted everything last night and performance went up dramatically. Use to use OpenDNS, then Google, then back to Verizon when I got new router from them. But went back to Google and Play is downloading like a demon again.
Fluke or real, not sure.

How would one go about changing the DNS of their network? Should I just Google it?

Router DNS Changes
This How To Geek How To should get you there.
I am using Google Public DNS ones with currently good results. My Play lag is all gone since last night when I changed. Once again, could be just a fluke, but if you are still having issues, worth a try. Can always reset back to Verizons they provide you when you dont set your own.

Good luck and hopefully someday we can have Youtube work on FIOS!

Using google public DNS solved both my issues with play store and youtube incredibly slow buffering. If you're using your ISP default or OpenDNS ones you should give it a try.

i have the same issue too, when we start using a DSL internet, video streaming on youtube is very slow and downloading at play store too.

Had the same issues, switched to Google DNS & now I'm flying again. Very very strange! Thanks for the help though!

Hi,
I've experience same issue. My android phone slow browsing when connected to wifi but its ok if connected to 3G. I've managed to solved the issue. This is what i have done.
1. Login to your router.
2. For my router there is one setting where you want to use IPv4, IPv6 and IPv4 & IPv6. On my router the default setting is IPv4 & IPv6.
3. I've configure it to use IPv4 only and save the setting.
After that i disconnect my android device and reconnect back. It works!!!

Dude! it worked! All my android devices were acting up only on my home wifi and I could not figure it out at all. Was getting orange wifi icons, slow play store and other google apps. And the few iOS devices I have in the house worked for some reason.

I came across the same issue. Slow playstore, youtube and Facebook. I disabled ipv6 on my router and then they stared to work. Maybe this can help anyone where the static dns didn't work.

I only use ipv4 D: and have google dns but it's still slow on the Play Store and Youtube. I've tried using a VPN and it's near my expected download speeds. Does anyone else have any other suggestions? It's silly that Aptoide would give me better speeds when I want my downloads to come from the Play Store.

ive got the same thing happening on my note 4. I've tried disabling ipv6 and using google DNS servers, but the Wifi is still very slow on play store (and all other apps). I've tried all kinds of stuff, even got a phone replacement from verizon and bought the newest router from FIOS.
Anyone else have this problem with alternate solutions?

Whoa! That did it for me. Thanks a lot!!

Hi y'all,
I was experiencing the same problems with Wi-Fi to my tablet all of the sudden. The speed test looked normal but play and YouTube was not. I realized that ipv6 corrected my problem under my apn instead of ipv4. I hope this could maybe help y'all.

Problem with Wifi or USB tether on LG Motion

I have searched but could not find any thing related and there is no specific forum for this device. The problem is when I connect my laptop using the Android Wifi or USB tethers, I can only access HTTPS sites. If I try to hit a HTTP site, they give the general 'could not connect' error. I have tested to ensure I can hit both HTTP and HTTPS sites from my phones browser. I have the same issue using multiple different Wifi and/or USB tether apps. Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
TL;DR
With LG Motion (MetroPCS) I am able to browse HTTPS sites but can not browse HTTP sites when using an Android Wifi or USB tether app.
Explanation
I did some more research and found that MetroPCS is now blocking tethering traffic
"Their filtering is based on HTTP user-agents. If your user-agent matches a known user-agent that is not android it
will reject the traffic. Now there are two problems with this,
A.) If an unknown userAgent is passed or No user agent, your traffic is accepted.
B.) There are a bazillion TCP protocols that do not have user-agents.
So off the bat with no user-agent spoofing, all protocols work except HTTP, including HTTPS, HTTPS works out of
box because of its encryption."
so it is safe to assume you are tethering w/o paying their $10/mo fee to allow thethering through you MetroPCS phone?
FYI, I feel that fee is a pretty high premium as it brings the unlimited 4g LTE use plan to $70mo. Still not that bad if you can make use of it. Extras like this bug me for some reason, but if they put it in the plan and just charged more I prolly would not think twice.

So I'm not Crazy
this had me pulling my hair out...
tethering was working for me- but then stopped mid-session. thinking it was due to network errors i just quit for the day... only to find tethering never working again.
tracert discovered traffic bouncing through near half a dozen 10.x networks before only finding "no replies". as you suggest, dns traffic worked (non http) and thus added to the confusion.
it appears i hit some usage threshold and http traffic was disabled. funny thing is i was willing to pay the $10/month tethering fee but was told i can't simultaneously have unlimited 4G and tethering on my account. i opted in favor of spending my $10 on unlimited 4G. i'm not necessarily a heavy network users but definitely beyond their 2.5 GB cap.
thanks for sharing and confirming i wasnt crazy thinking my tethering was broken.
MetroPCS 4g tether not allowing http sites fixed
Tonight, I found a solution for this same issue. I was not able to see this review except on the lg-ms770 phone I have with Android 4.0.4. After seeing the term userAgent, and how that seems to be the issue, I tested an Android tablet on my WiFi tether. It worked great! However, this laptop and my desktop could not surf using http.
As my terminology is out of date, and I am a bit overwhelmed at times by all this great achievement, I found something in the Google Play store called Chrome UA Spoofer. It let me change the user agent that MetroPCS sees when using Google Chrome on my Windows XP and 8 computers. Now, I can surf all http sites that I usually use at work. It's a little slow but I think that has to do with local 4G issues that seem persistent to all users of the services here where I live.
At least it helps me save the $10.00/mth I really didn't want to have to pay. I currently shell out $60.00/mth for my phone with "unlimited everything" service, but the http issue was really bugging me. Thanks to your posts and the key term userAgent which was needed for me to first understand the issue and then find a way around it.
Hope I can be helpful in the future.

Phone Location Problem

Google location services reports that I am in Cisco Texas when I am really in California. It only happens when I am home and have wifi on. I've had the same problem with multiple ROMs from CM 9 to PACman (4.1). If I turn off wifi my location is reported correctly. I've changed my wifi ssid and deleted maps data but that didn't help.
I searched the web and found that others have had the same problem, often erroneously showing them to be in Cisco Texas when they are in diverse locations from Denmark to Oregon. Google's mobile help forum had a thread on the problem but it was closed without a solution due to inactivity.
It is hard to plan my day when I am getting weather data for a location 1500 miles away.
I've posted the problem to google's help forums, but I have more faith in you folks than in the people over there. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: My Touchpad running CM 9 or a CM 10 derivative at the same location does not have the same problem.
TBH, the only thing you can really do is give it time. Google location works by extrapolating your position from the WiFi you can see cross referenced to a face l database at Google. It doesn't know where you WiFi really is, so is putting it there. Eventually, it will figure out where it really is and update it, but that relies on running other location sources that or can check against. Run GPS a lot, especially when you coming and going and it'll figure it out.
When I moved from Montgomery to Atlanta, it took a few months for Google to update my WiFi location, but it eventually happened.

Android doesn't use Skyhook. It uses Google's location service. Skyhook maps things by driving around in vans that scan for AP's. Google relies on user devices to build their Wifi maps.

I registered the MAC of my Wi-Fi router with Skyhook back when I got my first iPad 2 Wi-Fi so it could be located. Now if I have both my GPS and mobile data off on my phone, my location is provided by Wi-Fi, exactly at my house. I know Skyhook worked for my iPad 2.
Also, I think that Google does the same thing by using your GPS and logging AP's locations you are on.
Either way, it wouldn't hurt to try if the location isn't working for you. Could be that somehow your GPS was wonky and reported your AP location incorrectly and it just hasn't been updated in Google's system.

Why is my phones Wifi so extremely slow?

My Internet speed is roughly 50 down and 5 up. I use a Netgear modem/router (this was the router that worked correctly with all of my demands). I have an iMac that will get the full 50 download speed via wifi. My iPad gets around 30 (not the full 50 but satisfactory)... but my Note 3 is around 1Mbps. Maybe sometimes it'll spike up in speed for a few moments... But it's so inconsistent. I tried using different channels on the router.... No improvement. (the upload speed is fine though. It'll usually be the full 5mbps)
Any ideas on what's going on? Any settings on the router I can try to help improve this? (stock note 3).
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Digital Trends has an article that has some tips on this issue:
Glitch: Wi-Fi issues
Some Note 3 owners are having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi networks, finding that the Wi-Fi is very slow, or that the device keeps dropping the connection. There are a ton of potential reasons for this and consequently there are a ton of potential fixes. Here’s what you can try:
Workaround:
Some people with stability issues have been able to get solid Wi-Fi connections simply by making sure that mobile data is switched off. Just drag down the notification shade and toggle Mobile data off.
Potential solutions:
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and tap Menu > Advanced and then uncheck Auto network switch. That seems to have helped some people.
Try turning off the Note 3 and your router for a few minutes and then turn them both back on again.
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and long press on the problem connection, then tell the device to forget it and set the connection up again from scratch.
Try out the free Wi-fi Analyzer app and see if crowded channels could be the issue. If so then change the channel on your router.
Make sure that your router firmware is up to date and check settings like MAC filtering.
If you’re having stability issues then you might try disabling the apps Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Direct Share via Settings > Applications manager on the All tab.

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately nothing seemed to of helped.
I do not know how to tell which type of router I have. I can tell you it took many routers to find the right one (NetGear C3700). I went through a bunch of Time Warner crap and several from Best Buy......even Motorola's flagship modem/router. It needed to do the following:
Provide open NAT type for Xbox live
Allow my Android device to recognize the Xbox One as a device on my network (pics, vids & music through the console)
Allow Android Youtube app to communicate with the Xbox One Youtube app.
Allow proper connection to my iMac via Wifi (One of Time Warner routers would not work with my iMac)
My BT and Wifi havent worked the same since the KitKat update - Thanks again

Man that sucks, I had serious issues with 4.3. since KK I've been rocks solid with WiFi,
You might try to old factory reset (which sucks I know) just backup first so if there is no change you can restore easy enough.
What ROM are you running? Stock?
Set your wireless channel away from everyone elses. There is a setting where you can just set it to just 802.11N save it. Try setting your wifi port to static for your device. Check your wifi settings on your device. Make sure your using the same channel on your device as for the router.
Sent from my SM-G900P using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I've already tried a factory reset since the KK update (for Bluetooth issues). No help.
The phone is stock.
I've tried changing around the channels a little bit with no success so far. How can I change the channel on the device? How do I set the port to static for my device?
Thanks

Apps slow on WiFi but work ok on 4G

So I recently moved and had to hard reset my router (Netgear WNDR3700v4) due to forgetting my admin password. After I reset the router and got all the WiFi settings the way I like them my room mate and I started having trouble with our apps on the WiFi but no problems on 4G. He has an HTC One I have the Optimus G and we were both experiencing the same problems. So here is the story of how I figured out what was bothering the phones:
First we noticed the problem on Facebook and Youtube. Nothing would load as pictures and media but text came up fine. I tried re-installing the apps, no difference. Then I tried re-installing my ROM (SlimKat latest stable) no changes. So I did what any well versed IT would do and began my hunt on Google. I found very little to nothing, mostly people blaming routers or ISP's. That would simply not do. After carefully combing through my logs and comparing the WiFi data traffic on my PC's, game consoles, etc. It seems it was only our phones that had this problem. So I put my network engineer hat on and started tinkering with the routers settings. One forum thread suggested it might be a DNS problem. I figured that TimeWarner is such a garbage ISP the DNS servers were bound to suck. Well I tried OpenDNS and GoogleDNS ip's and there was once again no change. Now I was about to head-desk when I clicked on my routers advanced WAN settings tab, and there was the culprit. In the case of my router it has an option for the IPv6 to be DNS, 4to6, off, etc... In this case the solution was to disable it entirely. Sucks. It looks like KitKat has a problem with some routers IPv6 where a bit of data makes it to the phone and then the data stops. Any DEV's out here know of a fix for the IPv6? Anyone else have this problem? Everything runs great now that I'm back on IPv4.
TL;DR Try turning off IPv6 on your router.

USB tether DNS issues

Im using stang5litre Edition 5.0 v3 on OF1 I cant rememeber if im on the newest version or not, i feel like i might be on V2. My issue ive been having not only on this rom but the last one i use too(hyperdrive) is with random pages not working when using USB tether AND Wifi Hotspot. Some sites just return a DNS issue. Its really weird. For instance right now i can watch live streams on my DirecTv app on my phone, but my nvidia shield thats on the same network cant, ive also tried this with the wifi hotspot and had the same issue, but it comes and goes. Ill also have google issues alot. Like my phone providing the internet can use google just fine but if i hop on the laptop its hit or miss if i can use google, google.com just returns a dns issues 90% of the time. I dont know if anyone has an idea but im open to suggestions. Right now i have my phone plugged into my Asus RT-AC5300 routers usb port and have to set to android phone for primary wan, works awesome for 99% of tihngs, i just keep having random DNS issues. Im on verizon and have unlimited data
