Search with camera - Google now - Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

Anyone lose the ability of Google goggles? I used to be able to click search with camera but its gone now and I don't see anything about it in settings.
Sent from my Incredible 4G LTE using xda app-developers app

I'm using RC1 build of CyanogenMod and Google Googles works fine for me. I still see the "Save images to gallery" and "Search from camera" options under settings. I mostly just use it to scan QR codes though.

I should clarify. After posting I realized there is a separate "google goggles" app. That one works fine for me, but Google Now used to have goggles incorporated into it. I used it only a few days ago, but that option is gone now...I can't find a way to enable it, so I'm starting to wonder if they removed it with an update. Don't know why they would do that though..

I see what you're talking about now. I don't remember ever seeing that option.

i still have the button for camera search on google now. what rom are you on? what gapps did you use?

I'm using CM, the latest nightly, not the latest RC. As for Gapps I'm using the newest build. I had it recently and I went to actually use it for something the other day and it was gone..

Possible to port Google Now Voice Search to a Sense ROM?

I know a hack is available for AOSP-based ICS ROMs. Will it ever be possible port a voice enabled Google Now to a Sense ROM?
The hack works on sense. I've used it on meanrom ics for cdma. Used the voice search for Google Now app too. Worked pretty well. Only thing is after using it, my battery was draining like no tomorrow. Not sure if it's related to Now or not. I got rid of it just in case.

Yeah, I used it on sense too. I got it on XDA, but I'm on my phone or I would post a link. The only thing is that voice search was not working, but you could type your queries.

How come the voice search wasn't working for you?
They don't have voice search, speaking to you or you speaking to it, working at all. Sense or aosp. Only works on jb. They made an app to allow you to speak your questions in the meantime

Yes (sort of). When I first tried it, it was over the July 4th weekend, so the thread was very disorganized as people worked to get things going. I actually followed the instructions from one of the posts in the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28234189&postcount=142
I haven't tried it since the OP has everything posted with the voice search add on. It says in the OP that it only works on AOSP Roms, but the one I used from post 142 worked for me on whichever sense based rom I was running at the time (I want to say MeanROM ICS).
Darn it Clankfu, now I have a new project to try. Time to start a nandroid backup.

Yes, tried it when it first came out, then removed it because it was still buggy. Then tried it again Thursday for a couple days. Had to use the voice search for Google Now app to input searches via voice, but it worked pretty well. Just huge battery hog so I dumped it again forum now.

Been playing with it today a little. It is a little buggy (can't exit by back button and the JB microphone button does not work as the OP from the Google Now thread said). But, I installed it like the thread said and also installed the Voice App download and the secondary voice widget (although I don't know if that one is needed). If you long press on the magnifying glass, you can have the Voice App for Google Now open so no widget is needed.
The searches were not very natural like the Siri clones such as Vlingo. If I said, "call John Doe mobile" it would say searching "call Johnd hoe mobile" and try to search Google. If I just say "John Doe", it finds that contact on the phone and I can press the contact and then go to the contact page, which are more clicks than just doing that by hand. If I say, "run rom toolbox pro", it searches Google, but if I say "rom toolbox pro", it shows the app as an option and I can click on it and it loads. It actually seems to work better if you don't use the voice functionality and just type what you are looking for.
Be extra careful hitting the back button. If you hit that on the cards page, it locks up the app. To correct it, I had to press home, then to do a long home press and swipe the app away. If you want to leave the app and not have it lock, you have to hit home.
It also puts a weather notification in the status bar.
In the end, I agree with gk1984. I think it would be cool if it was built in to the phone, but it feels bolted on and not very smooth on the 3d. I may give it a few days to see if it is as clairvoyant as they say, but I'm not seeing why I should keep it at this point.
But, try it for yourself and see. As I always say, nandroid backups are our friends.
I also tried the Vlingo beta since that is what the S3 voice app is based off of and it seems a lot smoother.
Well hopefully they'll keep developing this and make it a smoother experience. For right now, it doesn't seem like a significant upgrade from the regular stock voice search.
Also, I didn't realize there was a new Vlingo beta. I'll have to check it out.

Well, it's not all bad. You do get the little cards when you need them. But I don't think that makes it worth keeping personally.
So, I tried it for a few days and it killed my battery. My battery today only lasted 4 hours with 2 hours of screen on time. There were 2000 wakelocks trying to get my location, which I think was Google Now.
Yea, that's no bueno.

I don't think Google Now was meant to be an assistant and follow commands, but I could be wrong. I think this is purely an enhanced search feature. They've be reporting the assistant was supposed to release in Q3 or Q4. They only said development was being sped up very shortly before the release of JB. They may still release an assistant later.

So it's half assed like Siri. The whole idea was that it was supposed to answer questions before you asked.

Yep, there was a google maps update this morning for me and the widget is gone
it's mistakes like these that I think makes people annoyed at google.
Somewhere in project management they screwed up. Meanwhile they'll bring this back a few weeks later.

They won't be releasing the source code for Maps, it's their own proprietary software. Though there are plenty of API's to hook into maps and lattitude so I doubt it will be long before there are numerous widgets in the Play Store.

I don't think the removal of the widget is something Google missed, it's more than likely been removed intentionally.
Edit: It's likely been removed dude to the fact that Lattitude and nearby friends as linked into Google Now, which notifies automatically and has a card. Moving the feature to be an integral part of the OS rather than just sitting in an optional application.
Where did you get this information from? Is it just a guess, as I can not find a "friends" or any kind of Latitude-related card in google now?
If you want it badly enough you could just uninstall the recent maps update, I tried it and could get the widget back.

This worked for me, uninstall then reboot, latitude widget back and auto updates off for maps.
Any chance they will put it back in next release?
Try this
Here is a post from the Verizon forum. I haven't checked it on my phone yet so hopefully this is accurate:
Found it. The shortcut is gone and I can't find any other actual evidence of it but if you go into Google Maps and click the icon in the upper left corner it brings down a menu and latitude is on there.
My Latitude icon is missing as well, but there is a Latitude layer on Google Maps. My friends are still there, its just less convenient to get to.
Yep I think the widget is gone forever and ever lol I have gotten used to using latitude through the maps now
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Well according to this post from an google emplyoee, It does seem the widget being gone is a fact, and only worth mentioning via a one line edit.

No it most likely is disabled in CM but PA enables it so it can be used with their set up.
Hey guys, thanks for linking to my site, so I guess this will not work on devices with hardware buttons then, will add that to the article
pie controls!
to activate pie controls, add the line: qemu.hw.mainkeys=0 to /system/build.prop
reboot
then proceed to activate pie controls in the settings (under system)
enable extended desktop under settings
then on the power button, activate it.

[APP] Re-sizable Popup Browser for JB 4.1.2!

Updated 5/13/13. Taken from note ii. Thank gyebro for this mod found here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34348831
Instructions:
1. Download file below
2. Copy, paste the apk into system/app using a "root" explorer.
3. Delete previous popupbrowser.apk from system/app if upgrading from initial release.
4. Then reboot into recovery and select fix permissions.
How to Use:
1. Click website links under maps, gmail, browser, anywhere that has a website link.
2. Option to open with popup browser "always" or "just once" will appear.
3. Optionally, go to your app list and look for popup browser.
This should work on any current "custom" 4.1.2 JB Touchwiz rom.
Works with stock and custom launchers.
Knew ATT was screwing us, lol.
nice find ...

So apparently Telus included something that ATT did not. Its something small but hopefully appreciated.
Simply paste the apk into system/app and then fix permissions in recovery.
Then open regular browser, type into google search.
Click some different links to get the option to open with popup browser "always" or "just once."

Tested on padawan fine.
You do not long press the link. You should be able to click links in gmail, maps, and in the browser itself and it will give you the option to open just once or always.
Otherwise like stated above, clear defaults in application/all/browser.
Working with apex, nova, stock launcher as well as others.
My "clear defaults" for the browser is grayed out as it has not defaults set.
A link in gmail did indeed work however!
Just doesn't seem to work in the stock browser, which I suppose is ok as i'm not likely to use a popup browser when i'm already inside the browser...

[Q] Searching for GPS no matter what ROM I try...

Hello XDA community,
Unfortunately I seem to be having a problem with my GPS, I travel a lot so this has become a pain. I have tried flashing custom ROMS but nothing seems to change. I used @Adam's method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272066 to unlock the bootloader. If I could be guided to a solution I would appreciate it!
Maps won't lock on, with "Searching for GPS..." displaying on the bottom.
I ran Faster Fix with North America Region and nothing happened.
I also downloaded GPS Status and reset / downloaded my A-GPS Status
Try this:
"Go to Settings
Application manager
click all at top
go to Google services framework
clear data
Then
go to settings
Application manager
click all at top slide bar
go to maps
clear data
uninstall updates
Go to location services
turn off VZW Location service or disable it all together if you have the option
Power cycle phone
update maps from android market if your phone auto updates after you reboot that's ok, my note 2 auto updated maps and my gps worked fine
That's it your GPS should be working now"

I've had the same issue. My searching for GPS lock sign would not even turn on with Jedi rom. And with cleanrom, the gps lock sign would come online but it would not lock. I tried the jellybeans rom, and finally it worked. One thing i've found different with the jellybeans rom against the others were that if you go to location settings, you can see the VZW location option, whereas for the other two it wasn't there. I don't have this option checked by the way.
Just giving you my 2 cents based on my experience. Maybe it could fix your problem if you install jellybeans rom and then follow the instructions suggested by the other guys here.
Have you tried Pimp my rom and replaced the GPS files with it?
Also you need to go in Settings, under accounts click your Google account, go to location access and make sure it is turned on for your phone. I have flashed roms before and done everything except check that and for some reason it should then on when you turn on your Location and Google search under GPS but it occasionally won't on the first lock on some roms.

Every time this happens to me I just boot into recovery and wipe internal storage and this fixes the problem. Beware, you lose your internal storage so backup any important files to an external sd card.

Replaced the ROM with a different one and now GPS is fine, I'm sure what I did above affected it.
Now I only have 3g, uh oh!

Edit: Service is okay.
This happened though...

Once I updated Play services the issue returned...
Do I have to decide to use GPS or Hangouts? All I wanted was to get rid of touchwiz!

When you updated Play services what issue returned? The GPS not working?
If you don't want to use Hangouts you shouldn't have to.....

I managed to get my hangouts to work but that broke the GPS again...I'm using AOKP.
Google Voice also causes a crash, this is getting frustrating I only want vanilla!

It may just be an issue with Hangouts, however I would lean more toward a AOKP issue. You could download GPSTest to replace the to replace the AGPS data..... It may just be a AOSP bug with Hangouts, however this js the first I'm hearing of it.
