Hi everyone. I'm about to flash a ROM and see that TiBu has the ability create an update.zip file to make restoring much faster. I have a concern with this though. Usually when you create a backup you only want to create one with User Apps only. If anything you may make one with User Apps + System data but just not restore the system data because it can mess with the ROM. When you create the update.zip file and flash it in, doesn't it restore all the System Data too, messing things up?

The update.zip (I always rename it to apps.zip) is made however you back up your apps, so it can be with or without data, it's up to you. I usually make mine without data.

So when you originally backup you choose "User Apps" only, not "apps + data," correct?
Also, what's the deal with creating an update.zip for installing TiBu in recovery mode?

Correct, just select user apps.
Creating the .zip is just an easy to get all your apps back. Just flash it in recovery. Takes less time than downloading tibu from the app store then running a restore.

I would have to flash in two zips then, right? The update.zip which flashes in TiBu and the apps.zip

No, just the one zip, TiBu should be in the backup you made.

Interesting. Thanks a lot for your help.
I just tried to create an 'Update.zip' and it didn't create the zip. It only created a .tar entry for every one of the apps I chose.

Is there an app, that i can use to download a list of apps from the market. Like a text file with apps, trigger then the market and download all the apps in the text file, to save time.
Are you wanting this so you can install all apps at once after you wipe or install a new rom?
Use Appbrain.

Yes you are right.I know i can use titantium backup. But i could use it only when i have all aps installed.
If i don't have the apps, i have to choose and download it, one by one. You know what i mean ? It would be easier, if i have a list of apps that this "app" download all and install it for me.

Hmm...
You know if you use Titanium Backup you can restore all apps to the rom you are running at that point in time. I backed up all of my apps just now on CM Nightly #177, wiped all data, flashed a Sense rom, and the restored all of my apps back with a batch restore. I may be misunderstanding your post, and please forgive me if I am, but this works for me.
Also, I could point you in the direction of a tool where you could create your own update.zip. The tool allows you to create a zip containing all of the apps you use and then flash it after a you install a new rom.
Hope this helps. Forgive me if I misunderstood.

1.) I didn't know it was possible to do a batch restore?!
I've gotta look into that.
It would be a time-saver!
2.) Would you share that information? I have the same apps that I restore with every new ROM flash.
Would this only restore the apk? or apk + data, like Titanium does?!

I can't remember if the the batch restore is part of the paid version or not. I think you can batch restore in the free version but it isn't as automated. It is still a lot quicker than doing them one by one though.
Just open TB > Menu > Batch > Select the appropriate method
Here is the thread for for the tool I was talking about. regaw_leinad created it. Not sure about being able to restore app+data but off the top of my head I don't think you can.
Hope this helps!
Hi,
So i'm planning to stick with the Apex Launcher and have reorganized how I want it to look and so forth. My question is, when I do a flash for a newer version of a custom Rom, say for example Omega series, what do I choose in Titanium so that it backups up my current Apex Launcher settings as well as all my games with their saved data, bookmarks, and any purcahsed apps? Thanks
Backup all apps + system data but..
Restore Missing apps + data. dont do restore all system apps if you move to another firmware/custom rom

I see. Also, before I update to a new version of any custom rom, I usual;y do a factory wipe reset in CWM, clear cache, and clear dalvik. By doing that, would it somehow affect the backup in titanium if I were to do one?

Sorry to be a bug, where is that option to "backup all user apps + data to external sd? Or do I need to move it manually? if so where is it stored in the internal SD?
once you have backed up all, copy and paste the folder "titaniumbackup" from internal SD to Ext. SD or your PC

Move your existing backup manually first
Set it before you backup again. Preferences, backup folder location, detect, whole device.
You'll pretty much lose your home screens. You shouldn't need to wipe between versions of the same rom

You will not lose your home screen if you're using other launchers it will be backup-ed like any other app, been wiping and restoring thru TB and my Nova Launcher home screens are still intact from which i backup-ed.

Thanks for the info. That's true I dont need to wipe between versions of the same ROM. I guess I'm paranoid
I just have 11 apps that I have downloaded, is there a quicker way of doing it instead of selecting each one by one? Wouldnt choosing "Backup all user apps" mean EVERY app currently on my phone including the ones that I personally didn't download?

Well if any problems occur after flashing, then you need to do a full wipe that's way you need to back-up all apps

Why wouldn't you back-up all? in worst case scenario it would be very useful plus you have options in restoring to not restore all apps so I think that would be fine.
If your worried about the size of the back-ups don't worry it will not go even close to 500mb, as you said you have only 11 apps at the moment :good:

Ok thanks again!
Also, what happens if I do a user apps + data backup in titanium and decide to upgrade to another version for example, omega 6.0 to omega 7.0, will there be a conflict with the data portion of the restore because the developer might have changed something once I do a restore with "missing apps + data " in the 7.0 version?
I use the Elelinux Froyo 2.2.1. It runs nice!
Yesterday, I was listening to MP3's unil the battery went down.
Now, the HTC Hero is in a bootloop.
I wiped the Dalvik-cache, but no luck.
Is there a way to recover and keep most of my data?
Make a nanddroid backup, wipe data+cache, flash the ROM, go to restore backup/ advanced restore/yourbackupname and just restore the data partition. That should do it

For other readers: install recovery image from Clockworkmod first.
@kemoba: After flashing the rom, I started the HTC and it works. Than I restored only the data partition of the 'broken' image. After this, the HTC has the bootloop again.
Do you have any tips how to proceed now?
Like I said, some app is corrupting your ROM, your only option is to either get me some logcat so i can see what is wrong with it or to reflash the ROM without restoring the nandroid and installing all your apps all over again

It's no problem to reflash and install the apps, but I typed some info in colornote, tracks in My Tracks and contact and phonenumbers, which I want to have.
I search now with =tools/adb shell= through all dir's on the phone.
Update:
colornote: There backup files on the sdcard. Lets see, if I can find the originals.
If you want you can upload the data.img from the /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/backupname folder and i'll extract you your data if you want

Thats nice!!
I am able to extract data myself now. But I cannot find the place, where the contacts are stored. Do you know, where they are?
EDIT:
I was able to start the phone after replacing /data/system/packages.* with a working one. Not all apps are working, but I was able to make a backup of my data.

I dont think it's necessary to back up your contacts.
If you have a google account, it will save them.
And you can get the contacts back after you resynchronize with google.
(However Im not 100% sure)
I am new with this and I have one question.
Is it possible to back up wifi passwords, email accounts and all those stuff, before flashing a custom ROM so I can just restore them after flashing.

Yes. Root your phone and use a backup app like Titanium Backup. Then save the folder somewhere, flash the new custom rom, restore the folder and then everything else you want with the app.

No, just copy the TitaniumBackup folder with all the backups somewhere that won't get lost.
Also, when you restore after installing another rom, DO NOT restore the system data. Only the user stuff. Or at least not all the system data. For example wifi points are ok, but don't restore any system apps.

Backup data to XML....
Than you can choose to back up your WiFi,email and call log.

You can restore user app and data without any problem but if you want to restore system data then always use xml (TitaniumBackup will suggest you for that). If you will not use xml for system data then after restoring data your phone will crash and a lot of services will not work and terminate itself.
and finally you will have to reflash again.

I have been searching for an answer for this question for a couple of days now but have yet to find one, so I decided to go ahead and make a thread for it. What I am wondering, is how to create a backup of all my user data, apps, and app data that I can restore on different roms? I am currently stock rooted, however I have downloaded and wish to flash ARHD Rom, but I don't want to have to re install everything from scratch I just want to be able to click "restore" and have all my apps and data back.
Any Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys.

Because you are not rooted go this route. You do not require root.
1. Use the Helium app and copy the folder it creates onto your computer, it's called "CARBON." This will copy all apps and app data.
2. Use HTC Backup from the app store and backup everything onto dropbox. This will also backup your apps + data. It will be on a cloud storage so no need to push anything to anywhere.
3. Go into your SMS and hit the menu button. Backup all user text messaging. Copy to computer.
now you can report everything to anything.
After you are on your new ROM.
1. Run HTC Backup (comes with rom) and restore everything.
2. Use Helium to restore any missing apps.
3. Restore SMS.
Done.

Use Titanium Backup and it can grab apps from a nandroid backup and restore them. navigate for this feature through the options menu.

Yes, you can flash a clean Rom then restore your data file from a previous backup. the only problem with that is that whatever problems you may have had before, may be present still. Otherwise, it doesn't hurt anything. In fact, both CWM and TWRP allow advanced restore where you can select portions of your back up to restore..one a time. In my opinion, it allows you to see, if a backup fails to restore, where exactly it is having trouble, be it in system, boot, data..etc. I literally just did this, restoring a data backup onto a clean Rom, and so far no issues. I understand what you mean by not wanting to set everything back up. System settings, widgets and app placements. You had the perfect setup and it took you forever to get it that way. Titanium backup and Rom Toolbox don't always restore these things like they claim to do.
Edit: I am finding the hard way with this phone, that unlike my old LG Mytouch, when you flash a firmware upgrade, non OTA push I mean, it doesn't stick to system. It's saved to data. So if you flash a data file from a backup with an older version, your back to that version. With my old phone, we could swap Roms after an update all day, and the baseband and firmware updates would stick every time.
