[Q] Instructions needed to upgrade to 4.0.4 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My S2 is locked to the UK network T-Mobile/EE. Unfortunately it seems the network provider has given up on ever releasing Jelly Bean for the S2 via Kies so I'm looking for help to do this manually. Is it possible to flash Jelly Bean on an S2 that is locked to a network, or do I need to unlock the phone first?
Is there a guide for upgrading from ICS to JB, including where to download the firmware?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

You need to read mate. 4.0.4 bad firmware. Do you have it now. If so look up BRICK BUG. You want to move to 4.1.2? Sammobile is the place to go. To network unlock look up gs2 unlock in playstore. Efs pls read about that. Just read alot before you have a paper weight. look up noob threads too. Lots to read
alliance v8
dorimamx 8.27
nels1 "three uk"

My S2 is locked to the 3 network and always has been....I've rooted it and I've lost count of the number of different firmwares/custom ROMs I've flashed onto it....
In terms of OS unlocking (rooting), that depends on what you want to do....
If you want to flash an unbranded firmware, you don't need root....
If you want to explore custom (aftermarket) ROMs then you DO need root.....
And just to echo andrewwright.....
If you're currently running ICS 4.0.4.
move safely away from it as soon as you can

[Q] UK T-MOBILE - Galaxy SII stock firmware

Hi All,
First thanks for hosting this forum and contributing. I am an android noob and have recently got a samsung galaxy sii on a contract with t-mobile uk.
after reading through forums i have managed to root the device using odin and insecure kernel and then unlocked it using the galaxy s unlock from market.
The device came with stock 2.3.3 and I want to update but stay on stock roms as they offer best battery life. I have seen the latest firmware available is XWKI8.
All i need to understand is can i upgrade to XWKI8 using the firmware from official firmware xda forums and will i loose my unlock when i do so ?
If yes will the aforementioned galaxy s unlock app be able to unlock it again ?
Many Thanks for your help. I have read so many forum posts now but as a beginner cant get my head around it.
Regards

No it should remain unlocked .

Thanks for your reply, I am now officially confused ...
Read the following at android devices .com "The best part of this firmware is that anyone with their Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100 handset can proceed to apply the update of this XWKI8 irrespective of the current firmware, the only condition being is that this phone should not be a network locked device. "
I know my device is now network unlocked but it wasn't originally will that matter ? Sorry if i sound like a stupid chap, just worried don't wanna screw my phone.
Your mobile will remain unlocked no matter which firmware you flash.

Off topic: Stock ROM/Kernel doesn't really have the greatest battery life. Jeffreys SpeedFrey 4.0 kernel is said to be released today, and has AWESOME battery life!

Thanks All .. ill get the update soon
Is this thread about a badge-engineered T-mobile?
Sorry to display my ignorance, but it's not clear to me if this is a standard Galaxy S2 that has been locked to T-Mobile, or if it is a T-Mobile branded Galaxy, i.e a T-Mobile banner at startup and lots of useless and annoying apps installed.
I suppose the question is, how different is it to root and reflash a rebranded locked T-Mobile Galaxy S2?
Thanks,
B.

[Q] Rooted using toolkit 5.0,need help

Hello guys.
Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300
I was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions for me. I rooted my new phone using the toolkit method from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488 and now i am confused about the firmware versions, and if the kernel was changed and such. I forgot to check all these versions before i rooted the phone,so have no idea if these are the original ones.
My phone is bought and used in Denmark, however the firmware suggests it is now a uk version looking at the country code could this be correct? If i look at this http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&model=GT-I9300&pcode=HTD&os=1&type=1#firmware my AP/PDA number is the same, but the CSC number is different,is this normal?
this is apparently the stock samsung firmware for my phone PDA:I9300XXBLH3 CSC:I9300HTDBLH1 from the sammobil site, and after root mine says PDA/AP: I9300XXBLH3 CSC:I9300NEEBLH2
I would like to know if this is normal? Can i use the 4.1.1. jellybean (2012 October 4.1.1 PDA:I9300XXDLJ1 CSC:I9300HTDDLI1) on my phone using odin to flash it? Or do i have to find a firmware with exactly the same numbers as my current ones?
I am afraid i might have done something wrong, however everything works, and root checker says i have root access, and superuser is installed on the phone,if the toolkit has "updated" or changed my firmware/kernel to a uk one, does it matter?
Also, after root my phone now shows up as Galaxy Tab in utorrent, but it is still I9300 in my windows7, why is this?
Did toolkit 5.0 save my original rom/kernel/firmware before rooting? If so,where?
I would be extremely grateful for someone to easy my worrying
Thank You

Rooting your phone doesn't change your firmware.. You're still on the stock firmware unless you flashed a new rom. Goto settings>about device> and see your build.. Then goto Sammobile and downlaod the rom that is listed for Panama and matches your carrier or build whichever. Download it and flash it rom via Odin and you'll be unrooted.
though i don't see any point in unrooting. Rooted is always better.

just flash a rom of your choice through odin.
reply
Hay thanks, I downloaded the ODIN, and installed and connected the phone, but a bit lost on what to do next,
I also tried looking on the Samsung updates but nothing what says UK, maybe I am doing something wrong I do not know as I have no knowledge about this
try mobile odin, flash a ROM (there are plenty to choose from in this forum) get rid of the bloatware and then dedicate yourself to read xda a 1 or 2 hours per day.
mobile odin wont let you brick your phone that easy so my advice is for you to jump into the no-carrier-bloatware-wagon

Don't mess with odin, since you are unexperienced. Just instal samsung kies and update ROM to latest version. 4.0.4, at least for orange romania, is almost debranded. No orange apps, seems almost as debranded rom.
hardly a debranded rom thru kies; he might wanna try mobile odin cause the risk is close to 0.
keep in mind that he just download odin, plugged the phone & sat there waiting for something to happen; like chuck norris & stuff.
from my sii xda-ed..b4 JB leak freezes this app
Just bought and downloaded the "mobile odin pro" but
i go to launch the program and it says " superUser access is needed but could not be acquired, are you rooted and did you give permission"

I wouldn't call him inexperienced; he's got me as a backup should anything go wrong.
The only reason he went to try to find out by himself is because I actually want him to find things out for himself. However, that does not mean I am going to leave him "high and dry" and be unhelpful by saying stuff like that.
I did give him a few hints prior to this post being made and this wouldnt be the first non Sony Ericsson branded phone I have "genericed" - the other one being a HTC Wildfire.
As for the OP, well, if we cant sort it over the 'net then Im gonna have to pop over and sort it out whilst I sort that other thing out :silly:
you need to root you device; what rom are you using? gingerbread? ice cream sandwich?

Hi there,
Im actually talking to him via the likes of Skype.
Hes running Android version 4.0.4 (ICS, presumably "stock" Orange branded).
Ok, hes flashed his phone via Odin PC version
He wants LP7 for 4.0.3 or LPT for 4.0.4.
Thats unbranded UK.

And how about a link to those files since the only firmware I could find him was from here?: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3
Needless to say I told him to download 4.0.4 using United Kingdom (Carphone Warehouse) as thew search type as this looks like the most generic one I could find.
As I said: its done now and the phone is working!
i'm a newbie, first rooted back in october.
and i am trying to help you know.....

Samsung Galaxy SII a tricky one ....

Hi I have a Samsung Galaxy SII GT I9100 2.3.5 it I9100XXXK13, and Kernel 2.6.35 7-I9100XXK13-VL577579 [email protected]#2 and has gingerbread.XXK13. They send it to me from Luxembourg and I live in Greece. Greek samsung and Greek Kies Is updating Jelly bean.4.1.2 but when I connect the mobile it syncronizes it takes a back up but says it there is no firmware update. No techcnisian takes the responsibility because is from another country. I want a sure solution beacause I am psychologist and I have a lot of apps for psychology and psychiatry and some of them paid and for sure I dont want my mobile to lock ,
If you know a sure way to update to Jelly bean 4.1.2 I would appreciated a lot !
thank you very much
Try with Odin search online for tutorials and the files. And I think this belongs more in the question or general forum

You need to change the phone's region (called CDC if I'm not mistaken) to receive Greek firmware via Kies. Yes, doing so may lock your phone so I suggest to root it, install CM 10.1 and not using Kies ever again.
today I found out that the phone is already rooted , so this changes things and explain why Kies is not upgrating,, so probably I has to install Luxebourg firmware and make the proccess through Odin,, I have to read about it ..thanks for your answer !
