Quick question, when restoring a Nandroid backup, does it restore the phone exactly as it was when you perform the backup - as in all passwords, programs, settings ect.
I love flashing roms, but sometimes readding all my wifi, passwords, email, forums etc can be a pain.
Thanks!
Marc
Yes it saves everything and restores it back to that previous state with everything intact. Before flashing anything, it's good practice to make a NAND backup; if anything goes wrong you can restore it.
Yes it does. It has for me anyways.
GBeris 2.3.2
And save a copy of a recent backup on your computer somewhere just in case...
Excellent! I've been backing up everytime I've flashed a new rom, but never had to do a restore. Good to know incase I want to do fast swapping of ROMS.
Thanks!
I had this same question but mine is a little different. Say I did a backup while having GSB on here. Then I flashed a different rom. Then I did a restore. Does it switch me back to GSB or just add all my settings to the new rom?

Nandroid backup and restore is just like Norton Ghost on a Windows PC. You will get back GSB just as you left it if you Nandroid Restore a backup made while the phone was running GSB, with this caveat:
- the Nandroid backup and restore in Amon's Recovery does not back up the /cache partition, so the first launch will take a while as the Dalvik cache is rebuilt
- Amon's also does not backup or restore the .android_secure folder on your SD card, where the Froyo/GB ROMs install apps when you move them from internal to the SD card. So, if you had apps on SD on GSB, installed a new ROM and formatted the card, the Nandroid Restore (I believe) will not bring those apps back.
Just to add to what doogald said, ROM Manager with ClockWork Mod Recovery (it launches from Amon RA, so you don't have to flash anything and you still can use Amon RA all you want) does backup the Dalvik-Cache and I believe I believe it backs up the .android_secure folder as well.
recoveries
Something to keep in mind is that the amon-ra recovery is stable, and works very well. clockworks recovery works, but something to keep in mind is it sometimes bricks the eris. I don't know why. IF you don't care on way or the other clockwork recovery gets installed with the one click method of rooting.
Nand backups work great. If you like to switch roms a lot. I'd suggest to keep one rom as your goto rom, and remans it with a file manager keep it apha numeric, and no spaces in the filename. when you switch roms take a few seconds to wipe the phone, and then restore. This usually makes it the restore function as it was before things changed.

Just in case any new rooters get confused, I think you meant that Amon RA Recovery gets installed with the one click method of rooting.

Actually there are new rooters all the time posting questions in general and q&a since they often don't have write access to the development area yet. They often say they just rooted.

I'm taking the plunge this week. My phone is still OTA 2.1 baby!
The other thing I will say is that folks should stop *****ing about FCs with the new ROMs. I get them now running all the latest 2.1 apps if I don't power down the phone every night.(Don't know how that compares to rebooting?)
I would make sure you use the amon ra recovery since in my experience its been more stable.

Hey there guys I came across this useful tool today when I was poking around the ARC section it lets you make a nandroid without having to boot into recovery. This isnt my work Im simply passing it on so I hope he doesnt care too much about me posting this here.
***ALL crdeit goes to ameer1234567890***
Nandroid backups are usually performed in recovery mode. This means you would have to turn off your phone and reboot in recovery mode, which wastes a whole lot of time rebooting and a lot more time offline. For me, this has been a killer as I do regular nandroid backups. Having to reboot in recovery and finding missed calls, sms from my wife and friends is totally not accepatable for me. So, I set to develop an online nandroid backup tool which can do nandroid backups without switching off my phone.
Today, I am releasing it to public, as it may serve good for some others too. This tool is specifically for Xperia phones, but should work with any model of android phones.
This tool backups /system , /data , /cache & .android_secure partiotions to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup directory. The date format used for folder name is the same used by CWM itself and nandroid backups created with this tool can safely be restored using CWM. If you would want to have a custom name for backup folder, pass an argument with the name to the script and it will use the name.
Feedback (especially ideas to improve) are most welcome.
Requirements
1. Rooted android phone
2. A terminal emulator installed on phone
3. Busybox
4. A working CWM based recovery installed
5. Some patience
Installation
1. Download and copy zip file to SD card
2. Reboot into recovery
3. Choose install zip from SD card, select zip and flash .
4. Reboot!
Usage
1. Open terminal emulator
2. Type su to obtain root
3. Type onandroid
4. Wait and watch

When I tried to run this, it says "Checking for required tools" followed by "mkyaffs2image not found in path"
I tried uninstalling/reinstalling busybox and installing it to /system/bin and not xbin. This time it sort of ran but I got a bunch of errors and no backup.
Any suggestion on how to fix this?

Isn't this inherently flawed since files on the rom are still being used and written while the backup is taking place? Neat idea though, don't get me wrong

Fair enough. Hopefully people follow the advice of not doing anything during the backup, so they aren't disappointed when the changes don't get backed up

I tried to do a restore from the online nandroid backup I made and even though it said "restore complete" my SD-ext(4) partition would not load its shortcuts and widgets. The funny part is link2sd didn't even detect any SD-ext as if it wasn't backed up. I thought it said that it backed up SD-ext during online backup, but not sure. I'm wondering if it might help to factory restore before restoring backup. I may try that to see and I'll report back if noone reports similar problem.
Edit**During backup I was not doing anything else with phone other then watching the amazing online backup screen. Also I tried to "re-create mount scripts" but never got option from link2sd even after reboot.

This tool (prior to v3) does not backup sd-ext partition. In the first post, you can see what the tool backups.
PS: If you can send me a previous backup of your sd-ext, I can work on adding sd-ext backup support to the script.
I still can't get this to work.

Hey guys. I am noticing that I'm unable to delete files from my internal SD using root apps like root explorer. I even tried to hook up tablet to PC and delete file through PC and when I rebooted my prime those files where still there.
I changed Roms from virtuous prime to aokp build #40. I tried to free up some space by deleting un-wanted nand backups and some other downloads that i did not need and. Nothing that i try works. I am using the cwm touch recovery rtr_recovery-clockwork-touch.5.8.1.8.zip. don't remember ever having this issue on twrp recovery, but I did not pay much attention then either.
If anyone has had this problem and could help I am thankfully for it

You can try this:

I also recommend moving away from CWM and going to TWRP for prime.
One last thing, this doesn't belong in Dev section, but should be in Q and A.
I follow the guide in this thread which is easier and does the job!
I have had sd card issues since day one and now I dont ever use any ext cards becuase of the issues

no, i am still not able to remove/delete file from root apps. must do it through twrp recovery. i am not able to make back-ups via titanium or my backup-pro. get a insufficient storage space or failed to write to database. im about to just format my sd card and loose all data.
Hello everyone hope you are all good.
Please could someone help me out? Yes im a noob I like to tinker with my phones but im a little stuck. I recently went and updated my phone to 4.2.2 but didnt like the way it set the file system up. eg emulating sd cards for multi user's and also the fact it changed the internal storage from sdcard to sdcard0.
Ok heres the problem I didnt make any sort of backup before the update (yes I know im stupid) . All I want to do is get the phones file system back to the way it was on 4.1.2 eg no emulated sd and the internal storage to be sdcard.
I've since gone back to stock 4.1.2 via Odin after using megawipe via the cwm recovery.
But this didnt fix it :crying: .
If anyone can help me out with this it would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry if ileft out anything you need to know but new to this never had to ask for help
use search, there's an exact same thread from a couple of days ago
you could use Root explorer to get your files back but seems you screwed up the phone :/

what didn't it fix?
After restoring to 4.1.2 it didnt fix the file system setup my internal storage is still called sdcard0, and instead of the normal path its storage/sdcsrd0 ??
how does that matter?

Read the basic faqs and guides first .
jje
Matters to me cos when I download and install an app I like to know where its going and the ability to move them to my external sdcard if need be.
Its down to personal taste at the end of the day... I didnt like 4.2.2 cos of the whole multi user mess. I thought that by joining here someone might be able to point me in the right direction . What controls the way the files and folders are sorted out.?
you are not able to move your files to external SD? you never mentioned it
Ive since gone back to 4.1.2 stock, still not able to move apps to the external sd cos after flashing 4.2.2 it messed up the file system. Even aftet flashing back its still the same

Was moving apps to external sd via GL to SD app. Was all working fine until flashing 4.2.2 which decided it would change where it put files and apps.
I used CWM recovery to use megawipe then odin to put 4.1.2 stock back on .
If anyone has a guide to megawipe then reflash without odin please let me know.

in the same boat, I noticed my sdcard sppears wiped but isnt wiped. I hope people saying search etc. are not deliberatly witholding the answer because that isnt nice.
if the same question was asked 2 days ago in the same way why does this thread appear on google but the other doesnt.
I did this whilst connected to adb (with it booted in recovery)
Code:
adb shell
cd /data/media/0
mv * ../
cd ..
rm -rf 0
Also tho I had to remove duplicate folders from the /data/media first or the mv will fail. I am surprised no function has been added to recovery apps yet for this. Or maybe they think noone will ever downgrade from 4.2 (I think 4.2 is a bad version of android).

The people saying search generally are aware of the answer. In regards to /data/media/0, I wrote a thread on it and its in general in "sticky roll-up thread" which everyone is expected to read.
However it has since been determined that the OP's problem is completely different.
OP reports storage/sdcard0 which has in itself nothing to do with 4.2. All aosp roms use storage/sdcard0 for internal and storage/sdcard1 for external. Unless the OP Missed a / and means storage/sdcard/0 which is something all together different. Its a tricky one. Its hard to resolve without seeing it

I agree it is fragmented. I don't see the benefit of separate general and q&a
I think we should have:
Android Development
Android Original Development
Q&A / Guides
Accessories.
But oh well.
As a very last resort could u not hook up to kies software and initialise your phone with mine it resets it back to factory as u 1st took it out of the box surely that would reset it bud

Um so you can also do a dd of the efs partition I don't know the partition number but it will be something like dd if=/dev/block/platform/.../by-name/efs of=/sdcard/efs.img
Update:
Nandriod backups work on file systems that are lower than recover. This means recovery/system/data/cache. You will have to use a backup partition tool or the dd method above.
