I want to remove all the bloatware from my HTC DX (rooted and TWRP installed). I used Titanium Backup but as S-ON is there you get the same stuff back after rebooting, I read here somewhere that you can remove those bloatware from Recovery.
Now I am in the TWRP menu, I mounted all the partitions, Went to the Apps folder and found all the bloatwares I need to remove. Since it is odexed, I was wondering if it is safe to remove them?
Do I need to remove the APK as well as .odex file? Will it reappear after reboot?
I have a nandroid backup, Will it be able to restore all the files if I mess up and restore from nandroid? Wondering since S-ON is enabled.

Yes you need to remove both the apk+odex file for it to be permanently removed.
Add: if you only delete the apk file, it will come back after reboot. So make sure to delete both apk and odex file of the app you want to permanently removed

Yes of course nandroid backup will restore all the apps you removed. Thats what nand backup are for!

I have made a new idea on removing bloatwares. The idea is that the user can select the apps that are to be deleted in aroma. I have already made a project regarding this but only for my device. You can port it to your device and maybe share this with everyone.

Hi All
Just recently rooted the DNA and added superuser, busybox and such. I am using titanium backup to remove bloatware and after a reset the bloatware apps are back. Cant figure out the issue.
Any help would be appreciated
Your phone is s-on. This means that any edits made to /system while booted in android will not stick. You need to remove the bloatware from recovery.

You need to flash DSB's newest kernel for the fix.

I just use titanium backup to freeze the apps I dislike. Works like a charm.

Correct me if I'm wrong... But freezing them still lets them take up space correct? Since there are only 16gb's on the phone I'd like to remove them completely to free up space. With that said, can you fully remove them with titanium backup or rom toolbox? I presume no.
If anybody has a fix for this let me know because I'm eager to remove the boat ware of this phone.

dbs9938's kernel now allows writing to /system while booted, meaning you can remove system apps with titanium backup.

...however, you still cannot free up usable space. Only the space in the /system partition where your Rom, amongst other things, reside. Until, that is, someone figures out how to change partition sizes.

I have successfuly uninstalled them all using link2sd (need root).
I try to uninstalled 7digital then my phone restarts by itself, I'm scared a bit, then after my phone booted all that **** apps I just uninstalled came back. Wtf???
Any solutions?

You can only remove them in recovery via adb shell rm /system/app/*.apk
And if you're on stock ROM, also remove it's odex adb shell rm /system/app/*.odex
Or you can use the script made by Maarten here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36278172&postcount=30
extract the updater-script, edit the filename for the apk that you need to remove and put in back in the zip, and flash that in recovery.
Tried root uninstaller but no luck either. It came back after reboot :/

No app can uninstall app on DX except the way I described above.
There is some sort of protection HTC imposed on DX that you cannot use an app like TB, Root Uninstaller & etc; they won't work.
Note: before you remove anything, make sure you make a nandroid of your stock ROM before that as once an OTA is out, you need a clean stock ROM to update successfully.

But my rom are now rooted its too late to make a nand backup now..
Anyway, nand backup is on cwm recovery right?

(I believe you not yet able to remove anything )

What I meant is its too late for me to backup a clean stock unrooted rom.
Sorry can't edit my post above since I'm new user although I'm not new to xda I'd just created a new account.
Anyway I wish there was a simple way to remove the odex on the bloatware I want to uninstalled. On link2sd, the app mentioned above are marked with ODEX (green).
Guess you were right, can't move an an app with an odex on it though I don't know what odex is.

I understood that. What I meant is it is ok to make backup with a rooted stock ROM.
To update an OTA, you don't need to remove your root app or any installed app as long as all system files are intact. You don't even need to relock your bootloader. What you need is a stock recovery.
You can read more on this topic on the link in my sig. Even though that is for One V, it works the same principal for DX.
You can remove system apps from recovery using app called Aroma File Manager, made by Amarullz, you have the link in my Index.

Totally forgot about this nice recovery explorer/file manager
As I always use a PC base explorer/file manager to add/remove files to/from system partition.

ckpv5 is right. You can not delete files simply from Data or System folders.
You have to do that in recovery mode. If you try to delete files from any File explorer, your phone will simply restart.
Though we have rooted our phone, however it is not 100% rooted. HTC made S-ON on all of those device so that people can not do any changes on systems.
Play with your phone with complete nand backup.

Actually we do have 100% root, S-Off differs a lot from root. And there are multiple ways of deleting the apps. You can make a flashable zip file yourself if you know how to, you can use aroma file manager (mount system before using it), adb, or any other recovery file manager, if it exists

Yup understand. I am sorry I wanted to say he can not do it thru any file browser when the phone is running. It will simply reboot.
Need to try Aroma File manager. Deleting with flashable.zip is really a pain not so simple.

You have to install an insecure kernel. You can find a lot of custom kernel in these forum, choose one of them

I have a stock rooted ROM from viper that has all of the bloatware an sprint apps on it. I've tried removing the apks from ES file browser, android terminal emulator, and titanium backup uninstall. They are removed from the app drawer but then reappear (and sometimes update) whenever I reboot the phone.
How do I prevent this and remove them permanently?
Also, on an unrelated note, I'm using the OMJ mod pack and hot reboot doesn't work. It reboots to lock screen and then turns off completely. Has anyone found a fix for that too?

This has to do with not being able to make system changes while S-ON after the JellyBean update.
Urgh, I can't post outside links yet. Google this article to read more:
"Bootloader in Jelly Bean update causes huge headaches for rooted, S-ON HTC EVO 4G LTE owners" at Pocketables
A few options:
You could install MeanBean which has a fix to allow S-ON users to make system changes so that your uninstalls will persist.
Or you could check out App Quarantine ROOT/FREEZE, which you can use to freeze apps. I used this before MeanBean had the system changes fix and I didn't have any problems with the changes reverting. Titanium Backup has the option too, but the freeze option is only in the pay version.
Another option that I do personally due to this issue is remove all associated apk and odex files in the zip of the app you don't want in the Rom before transferring it to your sdcard and flashing... Takes a few minutes but ensures the app isn't installed upon bootup...just another option in case its a Rom that doesn't have meanrom's s-on workaround....

This worked perfectly! I deleted the apks while it was still zipped in Winrar and reflashed.
Best option: just get s-off.
Yes it may sound scary, but you will never want to go back to s-on again.
No more flashing kernels before a new Rom, none of that.
Just go to the dirty racun thread and go from there.

tried this solution because i becoming a pain in the neck this apps that reinstall, but did not work for me. When i do the reinstall in recovery it tells me looking for update than update aborted..... do not know what to do next to get finally rid of all the garbage, at least what is for me!
is it a good idea to modify a ROM.zip with few system apk's like adding htc music player,sound enhancer,htc facebook and twitter? it'll do a damage to my phone? it'll fail?

what exactly do you wanna do?you can remove unwanted system apps using,NoBloat,Titanium Backup & etc..Also removing system apps from a zip file of a rom won't be harm to your device.But keep necessary system apps.First of all make a Nandroid backup of your current ROM.So if something wrong happen,you can go back...

Yes, you can add the apps you want to the zip so that they will install with the rom. This should not cause any problems but Just do like he ^^^ said and always make a back-up first just in case :thumbup:

Did you try to freeze them with TB? I think the only way to get rid of them is to use ROM manager or similar (if you are rooted) and delete the apk's that way. You may have to change permissions first though. I'd be a little wary doing that unless you've made a full backup first.

I didn't freeze, just uninstalled. Didn't think of trying root explorer and deleting the apks through system though. I'll try that. Is there a reason they come back after uninstalling through TB?

You have to rename the apks in the system partition. Otherwise they come back on a reset.

Check the nexus one international forum, theres a debloater that removes a bunch of stuff.

Gotta use Rom Manager or an app that has root and can see system apks. I think you can also just change their permissions to rwxrwxrwx (if even necessary) and then delete them. If that doesn't work, you can try to rename them. If that doesn't work, you definitely need to change their permissions and then delete them. I haven't gotten the One yet so I don't know for sure.
I lose root after booting up for some period of time too. Restart initializes root again but not for long.
