[Q] Extremely frustrating, mysterious problem. Phone turns off when screen is off. - HTC EVO 3D

This problem began to occur out of nowhere, and at first, i blamed it on the battery being dead, but I purchased a new battery, but still has the same problem.
The EVO 3D TURNS OFF as the screen turns off/goes to sleep.
It happens no matter what, different rom, flashed a new rom, different HBOOT.
I'm seriously considering just trashing the phone since this problem is just so damn frustrating.
Anyone got any tips, programs or recovery tools that might help me?

What do you have like what hboot what ROM kernel recovery are you s-off?

I'm having the same problem recently i got my evo 3d new and it was fully stock for about 2 hours then i rooted using htcdev unlock and flashing 4ext recovery then i flashed superuser, i changed the rom ro CoolICS and it runs fine but when i leave the phone without using it with the screen off for about 1 hour i unlock it open any app and it freezes then reboots and get on a bootloop until i remove the battery, i tried 3 different roms and its the same problem with all.
Hboot: 1.58 S-ON
Rom: Cool ICS CDMA
Kernel:Coolz
Recovery: 4ext recovery

What minimum frequency do you have the cpus set at? I'd recommend raising it to at least 384000 if you haven't already

Wow, this seemed like this would work, but it didn't.
Got anything else?
IT turns off whenever the screen goes off, no matter what, it doesn't matter what rom i'm on either, kernel mayb?

I'd recommend you go back to complete stock by relocking and running the appropriate RUU. then check if the problem persists. if it still doesnt help then its probably a hardware fault

Possible fix for random reboots

Okay so I'm not 100% sure if this is a sure fix, but it seems to have worked for myself and my wife. We both were getting random reboots like crazy and it was getting very annoying. I remembered back in my windows mobile TP2 days that a lot of stuff gets stored on the SD card after constant flashing and tweaks. So in order to get a proper flash u normally would have to reformat ur SD card, wipe, wipe, wipe, and then flash ur ROM. That is exactly what I did with my phone as well as my wife's phone. I formatted our SD cards after backing everything up of course. I backed it up on an external harddrive, formatted, put everything back, formatted the phone with a super wipe zip I found somewhere in the development forum, installed a custom stock Rom I have been tweaking and then booted up my phone and have not had a single random reboot since. So as the title says, it is a possible fix. If u try it then please post so that other users can know if it is actually stopping the reboots or if It's just a placebo effect. Thanks and I hope I've helped someone who is extremely frustrated as I was with their 500 dollar phone randomly rebooting.

Yeah my battery wasn't loose at all. My phone would also sometimes freeze up and when I rebooted it would just be a black screen. I had to pull the battery to get it working again. I tried the auto brightness fix bit my screen would go black sometimes and rebooting did not fix. I actually had to pull the battery out.

See, the problem with my phone is not random reboots, but hard freezes--with custom kernels..only custom kernels. My actual ROM software is very stable.
Now, if someone can figure out why that happens, I will give them $100.

Truth. I've never had random reboots and the only reboots I've done were solely manual because of these hardlocks from custom kernels.
If only my phone played nicely with kernels...

Since we never had this issue with the 4G you think it could just be a borked kernel source from HTC and we are missing some valuable info in it? Or the dual core aspect of it being ours r diff than others being asynchronous, is very touchy to code and adjustments we woulda made on single cores?
Any other of the MSM8660 handsets experiencing this with their custom kernels or is it just ours? If just ours be worth looking at their stable kernel modes source to see difference n what they might be doing differently??

I'm leaning more towards HTC's screwed up source. As this problem wasn't present in their 2.3.3 source, at least with netarchy's kernel. There weren't nearly as many kernels to choose from but still.
I've heard a few people say the source was either incomplete or messed up somehow. We can only hope that HTC releases an updated software version with a new kernel so that they're obligated to release the source as well, and this time hopefully it will be complete.

I'm having strange issues as well. My phone will sometimes lockup while using it and then it displays the bootanimation and gets stuck on it and I have to battery pull. And it's actually done it once so far while I was sleeping. ROM is stock but I just decided to finally update it to 2.3.4 so I flashed dastin1015's "[ROM][Sense 3.0][2.3.4][Nov. 3, 2011] Stock 2.08.651.3 Deodexed w/ Hotspot and Beats" over it and rolled. Before I flashed, I nandroid'd, Titanium'd, and My Backup Pro'd. I then booted into TWRP and flashed and rolled. I didn't clean reset before or after because I was worried about losing texts and whatnot. That seemed to go well so I flashed chad.goodman's mildAnthraX and also updated my PRI. And keep in mind I haven't touched the clock settings or voltage. Any ideas? I was considering flashing stock kernel and seeing if that fixes it. If not, then I imagine I will have to do what I least want to and clean reset my phone. Will the logcat help identity the problem here?

Ur on the exact setup as I am. Kernel and ROM. Stock kernel still did exactly what u mentioned above as well. After formatting my SD card I have yet to have it happen. It's been about 8 days since I formatted. After reading the posts I don't think formatting my SD card is a fix, but I too am leaning towards HTC kernel being messed up. I think sooner or later my phone is going to do it. My phone was doing exactly as u stated. Booting into the splash screen and not going past it. On some occasions my phone would either freeze up or just go black. The hard buttons would light up but not my screen. Hope this gets figured out soon.

Mine resets between the hours of 71-80 of being on
I'm having the same problem and I do not know how to solve it! I am so close to selling my Evo 3D and going to the SG II.
I have ran CleanRom and currently running Fresh. I have tried Mwalts kernel, Bcblends kernel, and stock kernel from Fresh stock. No matter what I tried, my phone ALWAYS resets between the hours of 71-80 of being on.
The reset happens only when I try to turn on the phone. It turns on, off really quick, then I hit the power button again, the lock screen comes on, then the phone resets. It is getting really annoying as I love having stability and this phone isn't stable at all.
Any ideas? I have exhausted everything I know. I'm running the exact same programs as I have on the Evo 4G and since it is resetting at the same hours always at the same time on different ROMS/Kernels, I'm pretty sure its not app issue. I also tried changing between the 3 radios and no change there. The only other option now is to do a fresh install of Fresh and use it stock and see what happens.

Try setting min cpu freq to something other than 192000, I use 384000 sleep and 482000 wake. I used to have a reboots and freezes but saw that advice somewhere and gave it a shot. Presto no more issues. Battery life is no worse for wear either. Not saying this will work but worth a try.

my cdma-sense kernels having issues????
RLS9 and RLS14 should be 100% stable - and not based off of htc source
(on pre 2.17 based roms)
i think freeza gave rls9 his seal of approval for stability.. if memory serves correctly
...on my phone i use (not my test phone) im @ 242 hours uptime on rls14 and warm 3.5 r116

Huge Thanks
thank you so much for sharing your information my evo 3d was rebooting about every 30 min and i have just been dealing with it because i had took my evo4g into the sprint store because it was rebooting aboutevery 5-10min so they looked at it and couldnt figure it out so the gave me the evo3d for free and i put the sdcard that was in my evo 4g into my evo3d without having any idea that it was the sdcard causing all of my problems so the same thing started to happen to my new evo 3d started off about every day and eventually started to reboot every 30min and i just decided that all htc devices were like this so i have been dealing with it but today i said enough is enough and looked online and saw this thread and wiped my sdcard and sure enough no reboots yet its been about 3 hours so i think its fixed
i cant thank you enough i think it got corrupt from all of the flashing i was doing
son of a ***** right as i was about to hit post the mother ****er rebooted so its not my sdcard after all should i take it in to sprint what do you think ahhh i should have never posted anything it was going so well FML!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ps hboot 1.4 is the **** no more going to the computer to flash a rom stupid hboot 1.5
I've sometimes had trouble running custom kernels (reboots and strange behaviors) that were fixed when running the stock kernel. But, the stock kernel leaves a lot to be desired in overall performance, so I continue to kernel hop. But, from my lurking on the different ROM forums, it seems that stock is the way to go for stability at the sacrifice of performance.
I had problems with evo rebooting and that in a loop. Very annoying. For that i've changed several roms just to find out that it could probably be because of widgetsoid.
At first the rebooting after some time of use, 1-2 days. And if flashing a different kernel than the one with rom. I was going mad, the last reboot or series of constant reboot after the evo has turned itself on, has occured after i set the brightness to lowest value, it was late so i wanted a darker screen. Interesting it when i set lowest value in system or via leedroid tweaks in widgetsoid widget popup - value im at 12 %. Maybe i got the restarts because i went below 12? Since my brightness im above 12 in widgetsoid and minimal in system, my evo didn't reboot a single time.
Currently i'm at shawn3d rom. Later i'll try some other kernel and rom again and see if the reboots occured.
U get random reboots while using any brightness widget with custom roms. I've narrowed my 3d threshold for the reboots to be anything less than 5%.
No reboots if kept at or above 5% for me...

i have had success after formatting system/data/cache to ext4 in the ext4 recovery, i had random reboots and lockups while using twrp and not formatting to ext4, (in all honesty i doubt the twrp was too blame)

Whats wrong with my evo 3d?

It started happening about a week ago and was random, my phone has been rebooting and turning its self off, it was doing it all the time and now it just seems to do it when the screen is off and its idling, ive tried different roms and that dont change anything i have noticed the battery indicator messes up a good bit and cant give me my battery percentage, ive cleared battery stats and wiped caches, whats going on here?

Maybe the battery is shot?
We're comin from a pure power source.
sounds to me like a bad or cheap battery. btw wiping battery stats does absolutely nothing as far as battery life goes. so its really not even worth taking time to do. also take out your sd card and see if the problem keeps happening. I had a cheap sd card that did that to my phone before.
Mine did that after I flashed just the newest radio by itself...I fixed it by flashing either Freeza's all in one or the one from xhaus that contained all the newest firmware from the newest update from the bootloader. hope this helps...i had the same problem phone would turn off while asleep in my pocket.

the new radio is garbage, revert back to the previous one and your problems are solved.
I was having the same problem. I took my evo to the sprint store and they gave me another refurb.
Hope you dont plan on using the new base or kernal because you will run into issues with an old radio. 0 problems here on newest one with current firmware.

no problem man hope it works...
could be a whole lot of different reasons. Always have to approach different issues the same way. You need to remember when the issue started. Did it happen when you updated the radio, or a rom and saved something on your sd card. if you hadn't done anything to it for a while or added anything to the sd card, a corrupt file on your sd card CAN make your phone reboot and sometimes get to the point where it won't load anything. I've also seen a battery cause the same thing. Go back to the basics, hope that helps, not a solution but just some advice....

yea my SD card made my phone do this too. i just took all files off and only put the essentials on it and it seemed to help
It's not the battery. Went through 3 until Sprint listened to me and got me a new one.

I flashed the new radio, and immediately started having random reboots... only when in my pocket(meaning screen off and at idle) sooo pretty sure it's radio related... should i revert back to a previous radio? if so which one? thanks.

I had the same problem , any Rom I tried it would reboot . I was on hboot 1.4 and I really thought something was wrong with my phone . So I unrooted so I could take it to sprint . I updated everything and now on hboot 1.5 oh well. But my phone did not reboot at all. I did the HTC method , my phone works flawlessly now . I'm on miks 3.5 . I think my phone needed a new start lol.

This is a known problem with sense and gingerbread. My girls evo3d reboots daily even after I put her on stock everything. Just a really good reason we need ics now.
I had the same problem when I flashed the new radios...everytime phone idle for 5min it rebooted. Went back to old radios and have not rebooted in a week.

Knock the cpu speed down to stock speeds, see if that helps, take it back to the shop an get a new battery or buy a new one, do a super wipe and install a stable rom which you know is decent enough.
Should be fine.
PS: I'm running Mikrunny (mahmoud's version on post 261) the gsm version, using the kernel which comes with the rom and that's it, no probs at all.
CWM v 4, never reboots at all, highest you can go with that particular kernel is 1.51ghz

Factory reset is an option
Root, flash custom ROM
Flashing will increase battery life, and the responsiveness of your phone
Same thing happened to it kept doing it over n over T-Mobile didn't do anything they're gonna send u a battery. The same exact thing happened to me when my Amaze was new. It shut down on it's own almost daily, but sometimes it would take a few days until it shut itself off and I think it went as long as 4 days one time. My phone is stock. I thought about returning the phone, but never got around to it and now that I have had it for a few months it has just stopped shutting off on it's own. I don't think I changed anything, but the phone works perfectly now.
I wish I could give a definitive answer on how to stop the shut down's, but I tried various things and nothing seemed to help. Somehow it fixed itself over time.

I'm in the same boat as the OP.
Bought the Amaze brand new and it would reboot itself 2-3 a day when it was just sitting on my desk at work or home.
I rooted it and removed the T-Mobile bloatware, made no difference.
I then put Bulletproof rom on it and made no difference.
I then put Faux123 kernal on it with the Bulletproof rom...no difference.
I got a new battery and it made no difference.
Phone just reboots 2-3 times a day. It locked up overnight last night and I overslept since I use it as an alarm too.
Dunno what else to do...

Changing from Stock kernal to Faux123's didn't resolve it for me either. In the Energy Rom thread a couple people said once they flashed his rom that their reboot's went away. I just flashed it today and we'll see what happens.
I'm still on Faux123's kernal with the Energy Rom. If it reboots still, I might switch back to Stock kernal with Energy Rom to see if that makes a difference.
Phone just locked up and rebooted using Energy Rom with Faux123 kernal. Just installed Stock kernal, we'll see what happens...
Well I'm stumped and frustrated. The Amaze is a great piece of hardware but it seems to have rebooting issues just like the LG G2x did.
I have the stock kernal with Energy Rom and I've wiped it and have no apps installed. And after a couple hours it still locks up and reboots.
I'm about ready to dump the phone.
No matter what kernal/Rom I use...it just reboots after a couple hours time...
Are you using any sort of task managers or probably a certain app causing it to reboot. Do a factory/data reset and don't install anything for 24hrs and see if the problems continue. Also, you should backup the contents of you external sdcard and re-format it. And do the same with your phones internal memory card. There could be a file on there (maybe from a previous Android Device) that is not cooperating with the Amaze. Just gotta figure it out. Good Luck.

I don't know if T-Mo will see it this way, but assuming you take, or have already taken, Double0EK's advice above, I'd try to get T-Mo to replace it as hardware defective. I've had zero reboots and I ran stock for 6 weeks and the Energy ROM for nearly two.

Phone freezing up at boot

I'm starting to have some serious issues lately, now I can't even boot my phone up without it freezing up at the samsung s animation. I have tried to odin back to stock eh03 and it passes and I goto boot up for the first time and it keeps getting stuck either at the animation or the verizon animation. I have odin the stock froyo and all the same thing happens. Is it time to try heimdall? I wasn't having any issues last week when I would odin back to stock and I have to admit I have been flashing like crazy lately because I kept freezing up and rebooting for no reason on every rom I have tried even on stock froyo, gb, ics, tsm, superclean it has been getting terrible lately.
Thanks
when you odin back to stock are you checking repartition and using the atlas pitfile?
yup and ive tried a new sd card, buddy told me to try it. Could it be the cable? But odin does say it passes. I have odined in the past with the same pit and eho3 and didn't have any problems now I just cannot get it to work for whatever reason.
Just got it to boot but freezes up when its running media scanner? Any ideas?
Sounds like it could be an issue with your SD card?
Are you running the phone in an uncommonly warm environment? Put it in the freezer for 2 minutes and try to let it boot in there to see if it's a heat issue

i think you might be on to something, i was able to boot it up before i put it in the freezer and the it ran perfect in there, but it doesn't feel like it is heating up that much, i only really use it inside and really light use. i've had it freeze up in recovery before or when i unlock the phone, im not doing any heavy use at all its just really unstable.
You might unfortunately have a dying phone... Have you tried to tweak voltages at all or use a program that will clock down the processor when a heat threshhold is reached? That might be able to eek out some additional life from it.

What is the temp where these phones start locking up? To answer your question no I haven't touched any voltages at all. I have noticed too when I start charging is when it gets hot pretty quick and will start rebooting

Each SoC is different, but you shouldn't get lockups due to heat from light or normal use. I've had devices get uncomfortably warm without lockups or reboots. Could the phone have gotten damaged somehow or have you overclocked it?
I have dropped it before and its got a small crack and yes I have oc'd it before but never more then 1200mhz as I can recall. Do you think this could be more of a hardware issue?
It certainly sounds like a HW issue if you have already used Odin.
My suggestions would be to use an mtd build as they run lighter and the media scanner isn't quite as intrusive. Use a custom kernel that allow you to tweak voltages to see if maybe some different values are more agreeable to your SoC (this can also be accomplished on bml ROMS). Also, monitor your hardware and see where it starts to have issues with temperature.
I was able to boot up cm7.2. As long as its cold I have no problems with it. This morning I tried to boot it up at room temp and it froze when I unlocked it so I will try to flash a kernel on it and see what happens
What it really sounds like to me is a loose connection. If you don't feel heat from it. But it boots at very cold temps, than maybe the cold is contracting a soldered joint just enough to prevent the phone from dieing. Think of the xbox 360's red ring of death. first it acts funny, sometimes getting lines on the screen and freezing, then eventually red ring of death! The cause in the xbox is the motherboards were soldered in England under a "rohs" compliance. Which means lead free solder. Over time heating and cooling of the solder would crack it and give the red ring of death.
So, I'm not certain. But it sounds like the same thing.

My buddy just asked if I flashed a gb bootloader. What the heck is a gb bootloader? Excuse my newb question because Im sure I never flashed it if there is one.

That would not cause this. But you flash it with Odin. You can find one somewhere in the forums.it's highly recommended you have them when using ics roms

No it don't. It actually flashes either eclair or froyo

here is the gb bootloader...the only thing it does is allow the splash screen to function when running the latest glitch kernel. other than that, does not do much.

Phone Randomly Shuts Off

I've only had this happen a few times and was wondering if anyone had this happen to them also. I'm rooted and run custom roms, it doesn't seem to be rom or kernel dependent.
For example, I had my phone on since noon and haven't really used it since then except a few times to check the time. I just pulled my phone out of my pocket and hit the power button... nothing. I held it down and it started to boot up. When this happens the battery is never dead (it was at 68% with the ext. battery this time), it just wants to turn itself off. It seems to happen when the phone is "sleeping", it's never done it when I'm actively using the phone so it's not an overheating issue.
It's not really annoying since it doesn't happen often, it just confuses me.

still you might want to check the rom and kernel just in case, either re-flash or change.
if the problem still happens, use your warranty and get a new phone.
what rom, kernel, and recovery are you using?
I actually just happened earlier again. Got a text from a friend that she was here, so I went down and let her in, came back up and went to check my phone a few minutes later and it was off. WTF.
I'm currently using Nils newest business sense with the OC'd ICS kernel and the latest Amon Ra recovery. This used to happen on GB also so it's not a rom/kernel problem IMO.
It happens so sporadically (except for tonight apparently) that it's maybe happened 5 times since I got it on release day.
Maybe I have the governor in cpu master set too low? I have it at the lowest of 384 MHz, I've always wondered this: whats the difference between conservative and powersave?
did it happen while you were on stock GB or on a custom rom and kernel? maybe try relocking and running stock for a while and see what happens?
I honestly don't remember, it's been too long lol. It's not worth it to go back to stock and relock considering I like ICS too much.

that's the issue right there, run the stock kernel at stock speeds.
How could it be the ICS kernel when it's happened on GB also?
Which OC? I've read that the 1.8 causes random stuff like this, but 1.7 doesn't.

3.0.16-g4a9c8a3 SebastianFM #1 is what the kernel info says
The zip name is Overclocked_kernel_v1.20_1836_MHz_by_sebastianFM.zip
Not all phones can handle overclocking.
Mine is stable about 98% of the time, it may actually be the extended battery that is causing the issue.

9x out of 10 random reboots are from either undervolting too low or overclocking too high.
I went back to the stock kernel since it seemed to be a little choppy with the oc'd kernel. That may have been the problem after all.
