[Q] Would like to un-root Verizon Galaxy S4 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Pretty much what the title says. I successfully rooted my Verizon Galaxy S4 (first time Android owner) but decided for now, until I feel more comfortable, to go back. How do I go about doing this? Everything I search routes me back to the Verizon Galaxy S3 for how to's

I'd like the same information about Flashing stock unrooted using Odin, Pit & tar files if i you would be so kind!
Im a bit afraid to try triangle away as the I545 wasnt listed under supported devices - but who knows..
Thanks!

You're able to download the firmware from the samsung site http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
Or you could have made a backup of the rom before root

I would like to unroot my Verizon S4 as well but the Stock Restore tar file will not download without it being corrupted so I keep getting a FAIL in Odin. What do I do now?

Can you PM me too or post here? Not interested in unrooting at the moment, but would like to know for the future. Thanks!

I feel left out. Can I get an unnecessary PM sent?
For those that would prefer to just flash their S4 back to stock instead of waiting for a PM,

Instructions for backing up stock ROM before root
I too would greatly appreciate a PM regarding doing a full backup of my stock Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 rom before I root it.
I plan on rooting the phone and installing a couple new roms to try them out and would really appreciate some direction!
I also am interesting in how to unroot the stock rom if I was to root it and decide to go back for any reason.
Thanks for your time and all your help! You guys all rock! :highfive:
EDIT: - I've seen this site around here - 247xtreme. com/S4/ - is this valid and has anyone else tried it out?

Root Status

Just wondering if anyone has tried rooting their Canadian Notes. I'd try it on one of the Notes at my store if I could.
Methods that might work:
S2 Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414&highlight=unroot
This is supposed to work with all Samsung devices
Super One Click 2.3.3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
There are a couple other Skyrocket methods that could be attempted too. But I don't see why these 2 methods wouldn't work. If someone could try them out and report back, I'm sure we'd all appreciate it.
Can't comment on the first method since I don't feel like patching in sketchy kernels, but Super One Click is a big pile of fail on this one, as is the zergrush exploit in general. Both just crash out and fail to get permissions.

Hmm... It probably won't be any different for the AT&T version. I'll give every method a shot though.
I'm going to wait to see if someone will release a kernel that already has root more than likely.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Should work with this version since this phone is just a big Skyrocket.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
That's what I was thinking.. same chip..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App
I am using a Korean note which is the exact version as the AT&T version
The way to do it would be to flash a kernel which would enable root
I wonder if it would apply to the devices in Canada Nd the Us eversions
Well when it gets here I'm going to use SuperOneClick 2.3.3 and do temp root and see if it works so I don't break it lol
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Using the Canadian Telus version - SGH-I717D - the latest Super One Click 2.3.3 fails when attempting the zergrush exploit.
Using the S2 Root mentioned above (without flashing anything extra, mind you), it says:
Device Manufacturer: SAMSUNG
Device Model: SGH-I717D
ROM Build: SGH-I717D-user 2.3.6 GINGERBREAD 207 release-keys
...click "Root Device"...
Checking Device Connection...
Device Connected!
Restarting ADB Server...
Checking ROOT Access...
Superuser Request Has Been DENIED! Aborting...
if I remember correctly, many users of the galaxy s series had trouble rooting at one point because of the signature verification in the 3e recovery. So if the note has the same recovery you won't be able to root using super one click until you remove this verification process. Can anyone try rebooting into recovery to check what recovery they are using.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Okay i just rooted a skyrocket and i had to ODIN flash CMW the flash superuser.zip now thinking should i try that same attempt with the Note... Uhh id hate to brick this bad boy already!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA App
Personally, I wouldn't risk it until you know for sure you can return it. If you have your AT&T version in hand pull the full rom dump so we can root this bad boy.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I've got a Rogers i717, and I'd love to do a rom dump, but I'm not sure how. I assume I need to use ODIN/Heimdall. Could someone walk me through it?
Ill do a dump soon as i get time when i get home.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA App
Hi guys,
I have my note in hand, just gotta run a few errands and I will get root going shortly.
Easiest method will probably be building a kernel with root already included, anyone know of a stock ROM floating about, that would make it a bit easier Reply @ my post in ROM dev forum, thanks

Sorry I am new to this device. I was under the impression if you flashed it back to a stock rooted odin then you would have the original firmware and the app should work as advertised. Sorry never used it myself that is why I am curious incase I ever get in your position.

Just wanted to ask: We should flash this AFTER completing the rooting methods? (Flash via ODIN the same way we did root etc..,) Sorry Im new to Samsung and rooting phones in general, but I do have experience with root/bootloader/etc.., on my tablet...
I see we refer to this as "MDK" Would that be the baseband version or build number? If I am already on Build#JDQ39.I545VRUAMDK and baseband# I545VRUAMDK, would I still need to flash this file to get back to "stock" w/ root? Just a little bit confused....

The provided build at the moment is a "Back to Stock" restore. I'm working on a pre-rooted version but AFAIK you'd have to have the bootloader unlocked in order to flash these. Being on Sprint I'm still a little confused on how that works - hopefully spending a little more time around the forums will help clear that up. (Thinking about getting one of these for the parents as a holiday gift - the lower end one they have seems to just be... substandard.)

I've taken a look at it...what's your question? Back to your original question....if you get a replacement S4 you're most likely going to get one with the latest firmware and a lock bootloader. The MDK bootloader, the original bootloader that came with the S4 when released, is the only bootloader that can be unlocked (loki) which mean the only bootloader that will allow you to put a custom recovery (TWRP or PhilZ) on the phone. Unless you have an MDK bootloader the only way to flash a ROM is with Safestrap and it has to be a TW based ROM.

Have you tried the full wipe in Odin?? One of Odin files on here is the no wipe. I'd try that before you give up your mdk s4. Or at least Go on swappa and scoop a mdk s4... unless you want to just run TW ROMs ?!?!

+1 on what Mistertac just said. I've got a question for you...if your S4 still works, how/why does an insurance replacement work? I guess it's not any of my business, but I was just wondering how you get an insurance replacement if the phone is still operational.

Lol. Sorry! Yes, I am having some weird problems with my custom rom flashes so i want to start fresh and wipe everything with odin then re-flash liquidsmooth. So I am thinking I can skip the "rooting" how to and just go to flashing kernal, then reflash custom recovery? And if so will that cover everything for a "odin re-flash"?

So I am thinking I can skip the "rooting" how to and just go to flashing kernal, then reflash custom recovery? And if so will that cover everything for a "odin re-flash"?

Umm well you need to do things in a certain order.. Flash MDK stock firmware in Odin.
Then root it with that link you provided earlier.
Then install a custom recovery of your choice using say Goo Manager or Flashify.
Then your good to go and can flash whatever rom you want again.
Those are the steps you're going to have to take... No skipping any

Can I ask what weird problems with your rom flashes you're having? May be an easier way for you... maybe just update your recovery.

I'm reading all of these comments and I haven't seen a key word that will be in the new firmware, "KNOX". Have y'all thought about that little issue?

Realistically I don't think anyone on a Verizon s4 has forgot about good ol Knox lol
Although this thread here has jumped around a bit so... I think now the op has just used Odin to flash MDK and start fresh... So no Knox/locked down deal there..

I have the new firmware and I just used the saferoot method, used Titanium backup to freeze everything from KNOX, then downloaded TWRP. I strayed from TW for a bit and set KNOX to 0x1 lol

I have been getting boot hangs. Where it will just hang at the samsung custom unlocked icon screen. Then I'll pull battery and when I get it to boot it lost 90% of the free space with zero files to show for accounting for this hogging of available memory. My theory is that when it boot hangs in writing some temp files or something and then I battery pull (after 20 minutes sometimes) and then it does finally boot and majority of my previous free space is now gone.
Any ideas?

You're not on the I545, so your bootloader wasn't locked.
I'd say definitely use Odin to wipe that phone clean and start new. Although I've used Tri Angle Away on my MDK S4 to get rid of that custom screen. That's an option for MDK users.
Up to you rally.
