[Q] friends GS2 not rooted but stuck in bootloop. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I am trying to fix a friends s2, its all stock and no root. Odin doesnt seem to want to flash the md5 files, either says nand write and stops or stay at BOOT stage.
any ideas muchly appreciated

Been covered so many times I've lost count this week (the 'Odin won't work' thing; search for similar threads). If you have recovery (I assume you probably don't, but, anyways), do a factory reset/wipe. And if not search for those threads as per the first sentence (CBA retyping the troubleshooting steps out given they've been regurgitated here thousands of times already).
Edit - You haven't exactly provided a great deal of info either, but as I'm not posting to this thread again, I'm not fussed if you provide more info or not.

- its amazing how each section of xda differs too, I use the s3, s4 hox, kindle, and htc one and its a nice place to be. Instant responses and friendly natured

Right. This is the final time I'm posting these steps ever (I'm deleting the txt file I have them stored in on my PC, so anyone who wants to make a copy of these steps, do it now) on here:-
Flash/Odin doesn't work blurb -
*Must run Odin as administrator in Windoze.
*Ensure Kies & it's processes aren't running in Windoze task manager. Kill them if they are.
*Try different USB ports; you must be using a 'powered' or mainboard port.
*Try different USB cables (particularly the cable that came with the phone if you're not using it now)
*Try different versions of Odin (search on here/Google)
*Uninstall Kies, reboot, redownload & reinstall it, reboot, try the flash again.
*Turn off antivirus/antispyware/antimalware.
*Check the rom/kernel you download for corruption. Either check the MD5 sum if you have it (use md5summer or similar), if you don't have the md5 sum or can't check it, programs like 7Zip, IZarc, WinRar, etc will allow you to 'test' the rom file you download. If there are any errors/any of the files fail the test, bad download. Try again/try downloading with a different internet connection if it keeps happening.
*Run Windoze Update.
*And if all these steps fail, try a different PC. And if it won't work first go on a 2nd PC, go thru the above steps on that PC. Still doesn't work ? User error (will be almost impossible to say what given we're not there looking over your shoulder, almost always something very obvious being missed) or borked phone - return to service centre or local mobile shop.
I suspect many cases where people (say) they do all the above & still can't get it to work involve problems with the USB ports on the machines they're using. Something along the lines of the port is unable to maintain a constant connection between PC & phone; if that connection drops for even a millisecond (probably not even long enough to be registered as a broken connection by the PC in the normal way), you end up with a constantly failing flash at best and a bad flash which borks your phone at worst.
Obviously the only way I'd be able to test the theory would be to examine/test a bunch of PC's belonging to people who experience this issue, but I've given this issue a lot of thought over the past 18 mths & it's the best explanation I've got for those instances where people are being completely honest about having tried all the steps over & over and on multiple machines (a very very small % of people, most people either simply don't do every step over & over and say they do, or they forget they've forgotten they did A, B & C but not F) & still find they can't flash successfully (and it isn't a case of the phone being borked).

Do you mind if these steps are re-posted, if its said that originally you posted them?

Knock yourself out. Copy, publish, repost & plaster as widely as you like
Edit - I actually saw a similar list initially posted by JJEgan ages ago (>1 yr), and then added some things to it, so he deserves ultimate credit.

Will do. Once I finished re-posting it (possibly soon at the given rate of 'my flash didnt work plz help' posts), someone else may take it on, as you did from JJEgan. I haven't been around for a year, but if I see his posts I will thank him

tried all that apart from the different computer tip. Will try it tonight at work and report back.

[Q] Windows 7 will not pick up SGSII in USB Debugging Mode (Will not root as well)

I just bought my new Galaxy SII for a penny. Great deal, and spectacular phone. Happens to be my first android phone as well (been waiting for one for years). The only problem i am having is when I put the phone in USB debugging the computer won't pick it up in explorer. If I enable USB mode I can copy files, but I cannot root (Trying the Xperia X10 Easy Rooting Toolkit, spits out crap about "cannot find the path specified", no matter what I do). Kies also seems to not work with the phone... I have tried both my Self Built Windows 7 HP 64 Bit Desktop and Windows 7 HP 32 Bit netbook and both have the same problem. Windows Devices and Printers reads the device but says that the driver has not been installed, when in fact it has...
Any and all help to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Haha thanks, got it working. Rooted and everything, sorta excited-kid in a candy store .
OK. So if you couldn't tell, I'm a complete newb with android, wanted it for forever, but circumstances didn't allow me to until now, and now I feel a little over my head. Sooo:
1.) Could you (or someone) maybe post links to some threads or sites that would be good to ease me into the world of android?
2.) With my Samsung Galaxy SII, if I am installing ROM's and taking them off, and installing new ones, what are the chances of bricking my device?
3.) Since I rooted it, I went over to CyanogenMod and downloaded the ZIP to the latest stable ROM. I then dropped it into my SD card, and went into a app I downloaded called ROM Manager. When I went to install from SD card, and it rebooted, it gave me an error and popped back out, seemed like I did it wrong. So how do I install ROM's (CM7 in particular).
4.) How would I go about removing that ROM after its been installed and im tired of it ?
I hate feeling like a newb, and would be very thankful for any help people would be willing to give to get me started!
Ok, two more questions .
1.) Is there a good app to backup my current apps before doing a wipe(I have a ton of them...)?
2.) I read that ROM's cannot include google apps, so how would I get them on? Would I download the APK and then sideload them?
Thanks again!
The ROMs that I downloaded were all in ZIP folders and I couldn't figure out what I should link to odin as ZIP folders aren't compatable to flash . And then my phone wont reboot into recovery or download mode (can't remember which one I need to be in for Odin). I tried with debugging on and off and it just boots right back into android. This is very frustrating, as I know I must be doing something wrong...
Thanks for all your help

Wow you need to slow before you do something stupid. Take the time to read and just as important, if not more important, take the time to search the internet for your questions.
Learning what steps needed to do something to your phone is not the goal. Learning what you are doing and why, should be the goal, and learning how to do each step is a sidepoint that you learn as a by-product.
Most important thing to learn why and how to check for is to make sure what you're flashing does not contain bootloaders. If you mess with bootloaders and the smallest thing goes wrong, you end up owning an extremely expensive paper weight, i.e. a brick.
In general flashing what the majority flash here on xda is safe. But that's not a guarantee as any garbage can be uploaded. So read the entire thread. Some are long. If you can't be bothered to read the longer ones, at the minimum use the search tool to look for particular words to your question. Search before you post. It will be evident by what you ask that you've spent the time researching, and will attract a higher level of help.
I'm not trying to be mean or come down on you. You're already starting to do what's right by asking when you're not sure.
A NOTE TO YOU AND EVERY NOOB ON XDA:
One of the biggest reasons people's questions receive no response for a day or more, is because their question could be easily solved by using the search tool in xda or one google search.
In the wise words of tom cruise, "Help me, help you. Help me, help you!"
And yeah, he can fly.

Yea. I goofed and I flashed an international ROM onto it. I was able to find a unrooted stack tar to flash. I plan to do a lot of reading before I do this again . If anyone has any ideas on where to start that would be great.
And no problem, I understand as I am a heavy user of tomshardware forums. It frustrates me when people ask for advice a two second search would pull up.
Again thanks everyone! XDA is awesome!

Australian GT-I9100 - seeking help after 2 days of trying

Hey all,
----- TL;DR Version ------
Phone crashed.
Galaxy S logo looping on startup.
No recovery mode, only download mode.
Tried all steps in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458,
Even tried pit file.
Odin cannot write *anything*, phone shows no change on display or after reboot.
-------------------------------------
Long term fan, first time poster. I use a rooted Galaxy S2 running a custom rom (I bought it this way) that I really didn't pay much attention to, it was working beautifully for nearly a year. I have flashed phones in the past successfully as a long term android user - but have no real experience beyond that.
I was using it the other night, when all the sudden many many programs stopped responding while I had an incoming phone call that I couldn't answer. I tried to remove the battery as it was hardlocked but when I went to boot it back up it stuck at my carriers logo, then the Galaxy S logo looping continually.
Recovery mode is also not accessible (as that seems to load beyond the point of that logo playing - where it locks).
I've read through the guide below extensively, and have tried all the steps in combinatination with several other roms from the links provided in it, http://samfirmware.com/, and various posts on this forum - as well as one that has been shown to work on the exact model and carrier (even purchased around the same time) in my country..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458
I can get to download mode - but the problem seems to be that no matter what Odin tries - it cannot actually write ANY data (even a .pit file attempt failed to make any changes - even if the change were to be bricking my device lol..)
I've also tried two USB cables in different USB ports as the article suggests..
Thoughts? Suggestions? Time to find someone with a jtag in Australia?
Many thanks,
Hajuu
Given you've well & truly done your homework (which is a refreshing change from the 'Hlap mai fone broked !' threads we normally see here which contain no detail whatsoever), sounds borked. I would link you to a partition scanner which may have been useful if you had recovery, but that obviously isn't an option for you.
Someone posted a thread in here maybe a week/two weeks ago there was a place in Sydney that did JTAGs (might be quicker than sending it OS). Alternatively, start calling mobile repair places in your area, might find one that does JTAGs. Or, try this site, might give you a headstart.
Also, I'd keep trying the below steps (and with a 2nd/3rd PC if possible) in the meantime. You never know, you might get lucky
Stuff to try when Odin doesn't work
-------------------------------------------------------
*Must run Odin as administrator in Windoze.
*Check the rom/kernel you download for corruption. Programs like 7Zip, IZarc, WinRar, etc will allow you to 'test' the rom file you download. If there are any errors/any of the files fail the test, bad download. Try again/try downloading with a different internet connection if it keeps happening.
*Run Windoze Update.
*And if all this fails, try a different PC. And then try all the above steps on the 2nd PC if necessary.
Well, thanks anyway - i'll take that to pretty much mean "Yeah.. You're going to have to jtag it" haha ^_^
I find it risky to invest probably $50-100 minimum to send it somewhere, when it might not even help at all (it could always be a hardware fault with the memory), Thus doing it myself seems the best option
I found some gear for about 160 euro - but I don't really know much about how it's supposed to work..
I don't know what kind of rom or anything you'd need or what kind of software to use.. My basic understanding is that it's a direct interface to the memory, where you're doing a complete sector by sector rewrite, so I wouldn't imagine you'd use the standard .tar.md5 type thing
How is doing it yourself the best option.I can get my phone jtagged for £25,and if it doesnt work then I only pay postage.
Attempting to do it yourself will almost certainly guarantee you'll:-
a) Waste €160 on something you more than likely will never use again and
b) More than certainly end up having to get a new phone because you'll bork your SGS2 so badly.
If it can't be JTAG'd, all you're paying is postage. Whoopdedoo. And besides, who says it can be JTAG'd anyway ? It may be able to be. You're only going to find that out if/when someone who knows what they're doing & has the gear takes a look at it. If it can't bet JTAG'd, then you're looking at a MB replacement (either from a donor phone or a new one from Samsung/authorised repairer)
If I were in your situation, I wouldn't be tempting fate. I'd either be paying postage to/from a JTAG repairer, or getting a new phone.
"Most places will only charge postage if they can't fix it" probably would have sufficed heh.. I never claimed to know a lot about it, just weighing up my options.
Thanks for the information anyway, I will be sending it off to a place I found today.

HELP: My phone wont boot!!

1. My phone wont boot .. gets stuck at The S2 GT-I9100 logo stuff.
2. When trying to get in to recovery it says: "E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command"
3. I can get in to download mode though
4. My computer wont recognise the phone in either recovery or download mode. It says its a "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller" in device manager.
5. Yes, i've installed the Samsung USB drivers. Uninstalled/reinstalled them 100 times. Not running Kies. Tried rebooting computer.
6. Tried shifting cables, ports and so on.
Any other suggestion? I think its bricked ... or?
Try another PC maybe?
Sounds like a driver's conflict.

It could connect fine on another computer. But i couldnt find a stock rom that ODIN would write to it. It always said something about write failure.
Any suggestions?
Keep trying. In a lot of these cases, you'll try 9 Odin flashes (as an example) & they all fail, and for one reason or another the 10th works.
Look for Hopper8's 'Odin won't work' thread. There will be stuff in that thread you haven't tried yet. Basically it's a case of perseverance unless you want to take it to a service centre.

[Q] Noob alert! - Need help with corrupted phone

Hi everyone, new here and a complete noob hopefully i'm posting in the right place and i don't sound too thick.
A colleague of mine has the S2 and it seems as if the OS is corrupted. The phone boots but on the home screen she is bombarded with continuous messages about a process failing and having to stop.
There is a whole load of photos on the phone she would like to retrieve which leads me into the second issue, despite the fact the phone will charge, USB connectivity to the computer is not working and saying the device is not recognized. i have installed Kies as well as the MTP driver to no sucess. More over the phone via USB keeps on disconnecting/reconnecting every few seconds.
All this leads me to my questions
Would it be possible to re-flash the stock firmware via an SD card in recovery or odin mode?
Would doing so (if possible & successful) keep the pictures or will this be erased?
Open to suggestions anyone may have and thanks in advance.
Yes, try flashing a stock rom with Odin first in download mode. No, flashing a one part firmware will not erase her stuff normally, though I'm not the type of person to give 100% guarantees on anything phone-related.
Sounds like a dodgy USB board/port which is on the way out will probably make it hard to do an Odin flash of stock though. What you've described definitely sounds like it's on the fritz. If you can't get a successful stock flash after trying absolutely everything & those USB issues persist/seem to be the problem, replace the USB board/port. This is quick/cheap (maybe US$10, often less)/easy to do yourself. If you decide to do this, search for KeithRoss39's guide in the General section (do an advanced search on his username), this thread has all the info you need to get it done.
This should enable you to get a successful stock flash & hopefully fix the issues assuming it's not something else hardware-wise, which you're only going to find out by doing these things first. If you have trouble getting a flash away once you've replaced the board/port (and even before you do that), search for Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread & try the stuff suggested in the thread.

Thanks for the swift reply.
Just took a quick look at KeithRoss39's guide and the micro USB replacement vid and it does seem quite easy and inexpensive to do.
The photos are her main concern and i don't want to attempt flashing her phone as it currently is considering the very temperamental state the USB connection is in.
I'll mull over this option with her as ironically it seems to be the safest route to go down.
Thanks very much for your help mate:highfive:
You should be fine, there shouldn't be any data loss. But I'm not going to be one of those people that tells you flashing a phone is entirely risk free. Because it isn't. As long as everything is working as it should be (PC with reliable USB ports, phone USB port working normally), the risk of any individual flash going bad is very very small.
No worries Let us know how you go/if you get stuck/etc.

pls help me.. am i doing wrong?
i tried odin in windows 8
help me guys T_T
You don't need to have USB debugging on to flash with Odin; Odin operates at a 'lower level' than that.
Find Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in General & go through the troubleshooting steps methodically/as many times as you need to in order to get a successful flash.

Go through all the troubleshooting steps in that thread one by one; if you do this, you will solve whatever is stopping your phone & PC from recognising each other.
Edit - Only hint I'm giving you (because the whole purpose of having a thread like that is so people like me don't have to go through this stuff over & over with people for the 8,963rd time over the past 2.5 yrs) - in your case; start with different USB cables (particularly the one that came with the phone/original Samsung cables) & different USB ports on the PC (no hubs - use mainboard ports only). These are for starters. If they don't work then you go through everything else in the thread one by one.
Right. No more hints, everything you need to fix your phone is in that thread.

is it possible that my phone has mini-usb port error?
because it takes about 2 seconds delay to respong carghing when i plug it in
It's possible, yes. Only way you're going to know if this is the case/not is by replacing it (the entire board, not just the port itself) though. It's certainly quick/cheap to do yourself, so you don't have a great deal to lose by replacing it (apart from ~US$10) & seeing if this fixes the issue. Search for KeithRoss39's guide in General (search specifically for 'replacing USB charger board'), has all the info you need to help you get this done.
