This may sound very noob but I couldn't find an answer. I have rooted and installed roms before but I have always had a large sd card in my phone. At current I only have access to a 2gb card (waiting on my 32gb to arrive). Can I root today and install a single rom then easily transfer everything over to the larger card when it comes? I have had this phone for over a week now and I am getting very anxious to start installing roms!
Thanks!

Of course you can man....use your 2GB card and rack some stuff on it, whatever you need....when the 32GB card comes move your stuff to drop box or Google drive (they're both free) and then put the 32GB card in and re-download your items from the cloud onto your new card....or if you have something like I do I have a little USB flash drive type of device that I keep on my key chain for all of my external SD cards so I pop the external SD card into my key chain USB thinga-ma-jig and then pop the USB thinga-ma-jig into my computer and get files to and from my external SD card that way....they are very cheap I think mine costs $9-$10

Absolutely! Done! I am rooted now, but now I'm having problems getting my phone to connect with my computer so I can add a ROM to my SD card. I am downloading the toolkit to try and update drivers because the phone won't connect with the driver I downloaded directly from Samsung. I have tried different cables and different usb ports with no luck.

Do you have wifi? Download the ROMs directly from your phone and move them to your SD card with a file explorer like ES File Explorer or Astro File manager....you could also download the ROMs directly to your computer and move them to Google drive or drop box and then install Google drive or drop box on your phone and they'll be there....I don't think I've ever used a computer to download ROMs lol

With the massive battery on the Note 2 I have no problems at all downloading ROMs from XDA RootzWiki or Droid-Hive...downloading them moving them to SD card rebooting into recovery and flashing takes about 2% battery max on this phone but that's just me....if you feel more comfortable using your computer and USB cable to transfer the ROMs over then you'll need the correct drivers which can be found in the toolkit in the other forum or you can find them directly from Samsung I'm pretty positive on that

Yeah man absolutely....my personal suggestion would be ES File Explorer if and when you download it just hit the menu button and go to settings then go to display settings....check off the box that says "show hidden files"....then go back to the menu and hit the cleaning settings tab....check the boxes that say "clear history on exit" and the other box that says "clear cache on exit" so every time you open it it'll be a fresh account of what you have on your device....after those 3 things go and hit the menu button 1 more time and down a few tabs you'll see a tab that says "root explorer" click on that tab and grant ES File Explorer root permissions so you can actually move stuff around on your phone....just download some ROMs move them to your external SD card reboot to recovery and flash away....enjoy my friend
Thanks so much! ROM installed!

I'm only familiar with drop box to be honest but my guess would be that you will have to select the file by long pressing it in your file explorer and then select "share". After selecting share a lot of options will pop up just select Google drive and share it with Google drive to upload it there...it will take a few minutes for it to show up

It should be, you might want to double check before you switch just to make sure but it should have everything backed up.

I can't get my internal or external sd card to work anymore it keeps saying "usb damaged you may need to reformat it." Anyone have any idea of a way I could back things up before i have to format?
Should probably mentioned that CWM still recognizes it and that it happened after I flashed the v5 preview of checkrom in the I9100 section (hellraised of course) and that the issue still appears even after going to my Android backup, ICScrewD

Try hooking your external to a computer and copy all the files to another folder. Format it. Then put them back on.

This happened to me but worse...
For a week or so I had a feeling my ext card was dying (backed up weekly), yesterday it stopped working. Had to reformat then use some recovery programs on Window to get the files back most of which I got back.
I thought that was the reason for my media scanning loop, but once I removed the card it still did that the rest of the day, I ended up reformatting the internal portion as well, but I moved everything to my PC before doing so.
Was able to get rid of all the junk from leftover apps/roms as well, feels smoother.
Hopefully your able to retrieve everything, good luck!!

it can't do folders but it basically is ADB with a GUI, ended up saying screw it and wasted the Android folder and everything is back on
I had the opposite problem once. My computer would recognize storage, but the phone wouldn't. I ran a disk check and it fixed the problem.
I'm having a different issue when I plug in the USB and hit the drop down to "select to copy files to/from computer". When the computer recognizes the two SD drives, I get a popup that says there's a possible problem with my internal SD card and wants to scan it for fixes. Not sure if it's safe to let windows mess with my internal card. I can opt out of that popup and everything works fine. The question is, is it safe to let Windows scan and possible fix it?

USB Storage is damaged too, no CWM, no connect to PC
Hi,
Just rooted my phone 2 days back and today just got the USB Storage damaged in notification bar.
I cannot accessed to both internal and external in ES File Explorer and also not able to connect to my PC. I do not have CWM too.
I did have a copy of Titanium Backup for all users and system apps in my PC, is formatting the ONLY way? I am afraid that after formatting, the system files would be gone and I would not even able to restore from Titanium Backup and Samsung Service Center would charge me since I had void the warranty by rooting the phone.
Please help! :-(
Go into recovery and mount the internal and use adb or Droid explorer to get the necessary files out

UM lets see maybe because i came from a iphone already. The whole purpose of extra storage is to use it. Im aware you can use it for music and videos. It was a simple question because i havent had a android for years and before you were able to install apps straight to the SD Card.
You can't actually install the apps to the external SD card, but with the previously mentioned Filemount you can move the large data files to the SD card. the 9 gigs you have available will go quite a while with media files on the external SD card.

Yes. Also don't hold your breath on the installing apps to SD card thing.
Install your game, use FolderMount to simlink the folders to the SDcard. it will trick the phone into thinking the files are still on internal memory when they really are on the sdcard. only thing is you need root

good to hear! i would definitely look into titanium backup. i know its like 5 bucks or whatever but the best app around. it will let u freeze those bloatware apps and help speed the phone up. i would check out each S4 forum (Tmobile, AT&T, sprint, and the general one) and look through those "Apps to have threads"

I won't deny that it works for you but I know for fact it doesn't work for me and many many other people. U can read these forums and Google it and there are issues. For me it creates a dir on my sd card but it's just a mirror of the original dir on the phone. So it actually doesn't save space. Has anyone else got foldermount to work and can verify it's not just mirroring the original dir? I'm using the SanDisk 64gig card from amazon.

This is what it looks like when I click on it on my macbook (see picture). How am I able to get my device to allow me to access internal storage? thanks

You need android file transfer. Unfortunately, it's kind of clunky, but it gets the job done. http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
It's possible to get MTP to work natively in OS X via macports, but I'm not sure how well it works. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355913

All of the methods posted in this thread will let you put files in the root of your sdcard.
My android file transfer wont bring my to the root of my storage, only where my data is, for CM 10.1 its the storage/emulated/0. Ive always just transfered everything there then to the next place and vice versa. Dont know how helpful this is but oh well. When I had my Tbolt plugging it in would allow me to get to the root automatically but trying to do anything with the DNA and Mac is a serious pain.
Hey guys I'm having an issue with setting my sd card as my download directory, when I set it to external sd and try to download anything wether it be a picture or a document I get Message saying their is not enough space cannot finish download, now I thought it might be my sd card going bad so I went out and purchased a New one 64GB, old one was 32gb but I'm still getting the same message, I can set it to internal memory dl the file and then transfer it to my sd after just fine so I know now it's not an sd issue.

You could try the app SDFix by NextApp in the Play Store. It's free.
- Tapatalked from the G3 -
OP - Are you rooted?
KitKat has issues with access to microSD depending on what you are doing.
You will need to enable full access to SD.
Look in the root thread ot use Xposed with Tweakbox.

boat browser is not a privileged app. It will not write everywhere on the sdcard with default kitkat privileges. you can change them manually or since you are rooted use an app like sdfix or an xposed module to do the change for you.

I have the same problem with the internal card. i can't download anything off of playstore anymore because it says insufficient memory. I am going to have to flash the stock b06 thing and start over. blows. Oh and there is like 12 gig available on the internal card and I dont see any other way around it. Maybe after refreshing I will be able to implement the newest root method and that will clear it up. Also I DON'T have a problem saving random objects to the samsung evo 64gb (omg you have to get one) because I did the kitkat fix and it worked fine.
I already have apps on my SD card that I had moved over in the past but any other apps I move now become corrupted and useless. I'm hoping that formating the card will fix this issue. Can I just copy all contents from the card over to my pc then copy them back on after the format? Should everything work correctly? I have 6gigs of spotify music and other big data files. Hope someone answers Thanks!

I'm on lollipop with klte root. Man I messed up. I transfered all the contents from my sd over to my pc to format it and when I switched everything back over the folders came up as all empty. And I can't seem to recreate a folder called .android_secure. My storage info shows that about 9gigs of space are being used on the sd but the folders show nothing. 6gigs were of pure spotify offline music. This is not a good day. Tons of pics were there too.

I have done the same. In MM was concerned that my SD data would be gone. Made the transfer to the PC of everything. After seeing what MM did to my SD, I formatted the SD again and transferred from the PC to the SD and all was fine. If you want that info back and it is still on the PC, then just do the same. In my case after the format, all was as before.

I recommend using Kies and Another Backup Solution as I've had problems with Kies backups in the past, causing me to lose saved texts, contacts, memos, settings, etc.
I personally recommend using Helium backup from ClockworkMod, a quick search through google play should get it for ya.
Happy resetting! :3
EDIT: Just realized this thread is old... you've probably already reset the phone. Sorry I didn't pay attention to the date stamp..
It's almost scary that you would have responded to this thread right now. I am going through the exact same mess again. I tried applying a fix to make the external card detectable by other apps which were not detecting it. Well after doing that none of my apps or data on the card show up or work. The files are there if I explore root folder though. How do I regain the pathway to the card? Through my USB on pc it does not show the external but it does if I use sd card reader with the sd card by itself. Last time I copied everything from the card to my pc then formatted. It all became a senseless mess when I tried returning everything to the card. Lost everything. I tried backing up with kies before but it did not give option to backup sd card. Please help is an understatement. I just checked the sd card for errors using Windows tools but no errors popped up.

The reason for this occurrence (as well as how to fix it) depend on how the fix was applied.
Please describe the nature of the fix as specifically as you can. Things like where you found it, what it does, how you installed it, as well as if this is the same SD card, will help the most.
Edit: if you could also include the file system that's on the card that would be great too.
Thank you for responding. I'm not sure what the file system on the card would be but I've attached a screenshot of what I did. The name of the app is there.

Well I found the app in question in the play store, and was unable to track down exactly what it does, so we can't get anything out of that.
To get the file system that's on the card all you have to do is put it in a Windows PC and look at the drive properties.
At this point the best thing to do would be to back up everything on the card to a computer.
