heya all!
i just got my GT-I9100 today; it was bought from A1 (part of vodafone) austria, but it does not have a simlock, they usually "lag behind" with those and business customers seem to be able to get some of the first models that do not have any lock yet.
but thats not the issue; i fiddled around with a few things, namely: root it with that superoneclick thingie, install rom manager, (unsuccessfully) try to flash clockworkmod recovery with it, ..
and then i realized that it does not actually replace the "android system recovery 3e" at all, for some reason. actually i seemed to have both the 2e and the 3e version available SOMEwhere, when i did an "adb reboot recovery" i got into the 3e version, with some key combo i managed to get into 2e (i think it was vol-down + power)
in any case, after searching forums for a while i found info that people have been installing "darky's 9.2 resurrection" in this case because it kind of completely wipes everything and gives a clean base to start with.
so i tried that, and i think it was a bad idea to actually re-partition with odin with the included PIT file. in any case, the flashing process completely halted right after it started; after many minutes i unplugged the phone, odin immediately gave me a red FAIL label, and since the phone didn't react anymore i power cycled it via its battery. i guess that was the second mistake
now i'm stuck in a state of complete darkness. the appearently common issue of "black screen after logo" is something different, i don't get ANY reaction from the phone WHATSOEVER. regardless of what keys i press in what combinations etc, it acts as if the battery was completely empty (which it definitely is not). USB does not do anything either.
i also noticed that the phone got unusually warm in the area of the camera, not like HOT, but warmer than i was able to get it by just toying around with it the hour before. i mean, if i try to turn it on and stuff, so it looks to me as if it is doing something, but it cannot even initialize the display or usb.
i ordered some components and will try this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551 even tho it explicitly states that it won't help against all-blackness, just in case.
anyone got any ideas of what i could still do? or is trying to get a replacement from the carrier my only option?
just for additional info, i also have 2 HTC desires, and never managed to brick them to death, i have some clues about adb and the sdk in general, i'm not completely clueless when it comes to android, but since i don't even get any kind of touchable interface (usb wise) i'm out of ideas...
thanks & regards

hmn i kind of wasn't sure about darkys rom after my attempts anymore
in the beginning i thought the galaxy s2 was actually called i9000, until i opened it once again and say that it states 9100
but in any case - is there anything i can do, software wise?
anyone got any ideas of what i could still do? or is trying to get a replacement from the carrier my only option?
Fake /wrong rom they may reject it under warranty .

well thats the problem, i can't flash anything. i have no way of going into download mode, or any other mode, its just "dead".
Try to use the "magical cable", i think this cable work also on SG2 and not only the SG1 ... There is a lot sellers on ebay.
Sorry did i not mention the download mode recovery jig .
If it boots via the recovery jig to download mode you may be able to fix or at least fix enough to claim warranty .

yep i guess i will get the components on monday (and i need to borrow a soldering iron
i already got info from the carrier that they will replace it, i just hope they won't look at it too much

heys, i got a replacement from the carrier for free, and i'm not gonna brick it just to retest *g*
i ordered components for the usb rig and they already arrived, but i have not yet found time to test it, partly because i don't really need it - this time i did not make the mistake of flashing a wrong partition table......
regards
additional info: i'm on cognition S2 now. before i went there, i flashed 3-part stock 2.3.4 firmware, and this time, it was the right PIT file *g* so everything worked like a charm.
Hey,, I recently got my galaxy s2 and im new in the android thing,, i want to flash my phone to litening rom but im worried that i might brick it,, what are the chances that i may brick my phone? tnx and more power
The risk is very small as long as you follow the instructions to the letter. Read from start to finish a few times before doing anything and double check everything. It's actually all very easy and straightforward
Edit: and have a look at the thread about backing up your EFS folder before flashing (you'll need root) it's in the dev section somewhere.

But how hard is it to really brick a SGS2 ?
I think i read about 1 person who couldnt get his phone up and running again .
SGS2 i belive is really hard to brick.
Sorry for my bad english
There are enough who totally brick a phone in the course of a year . But its hard to do plenty of oh hell moments but recovered flashing stock rom .
Brick tends to be a misused term SGS brick means it should work after flashing stock rom via odin . Other phones brick means dead phone return to factory no hope .

As long as you never tick "Re-Partition" and insert the PIT in Odin its almost imposable to brick unless you somehow nuke the bootloader(which you shouldn't be able todo via flashing custom roms).
I dont even think theres much of a chance of radio bricks, worst that happens is that you have to re-flash.

As long as one of the (secondary) bootloaders is still intact and you can get into download-mode (maybe by using the USB jig), then yes.

If the service centre can't fix (when I sent mine to one they told me it was beyond economic repair) don't lose hope as this guy will probably be able to repair it for you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=1602851
Ended up being cheaper than if my local service centre had been able to repair it too.
Being new to flashing I was also very scared at the start. I was pulling my hair out when the first time I flashed a new rom and got stuck in a boot loop. Luckily I backed up the entire system and I was able to restore.
Make sure you do a back up of your system first.
The first time its scary, I had no nails after the first flash lol. But after that its fun, just make sure to read everything and follow the instructions to the letter.
Good Luck!!
Sim card not recognized
I have rooted by galaxy s2 and my phone fails to recognize the sim card and unfortunately I didn't backup my original rom to restore the previous settings
I tried various things: hard reset, install alternative (custom) roms all seem to have no effect on the sim card.
I am getting quite frustrtated with this, is there an original ROM for my location (GREECE, VODAFONE) to try with odin ? I should note that my mobile seems not to connect with the PC when I try to connect it via kies (odin works instead)
Is there a possibility that the phone's card sensors are physically damaged, thus return it for repairs ?
Thanks for your time

SGS2 - Download mode but no recovery
Hi!
I have a bit of a problem here as well when i was trying to flash back to the stock firmware. Now when I try to get to the clockwork recovery mod, I get the famous dead screen with symbols of mobile phone, exclamation point and a pc. I have been searching solution to this problem for hours now, and still I don't want to quit.
My previous custom rom was installed in with no problems. Litening rom 3.0.
Now, with usb jig i can get into the download mode, no problem there. It just seems that the traffic is just jammed.
Download mode works but Odin doesn't transfer anything. Gets stuck on the factoryfs.img while i'm trying to flash. Kies doesn't recognize the phone but pc recognizes the USB device with no problem. Original stock firmware doesn't load on the phone. Odin just stops transferring.
Things I've tried so far.
-Reflash (both litening rom again and stock firmware) with odin (Kies is not on while I do this, I checked)
-Kies (doesn't work)
-Download mode does work but it seems that phone doesn't accept any files.
-I tried the one-click unbrick which seemed to do something god but failed at the end.
What could I still try? I'm running out of options now.
I apologize for my bad english.
I think I've bricked my Galaxy S II.. I got it yesterday and tried to flash 2.3.5. When I was flashing with Odin, the program went unresponsive and crashed. There was nothing else to do but take out the battery.. I shouldn't have done it, but I did. And now it won't turn on at all. I've tried the 3 button method, for download mode, and a jig from my old i9000. Nothing has worked. The screen wont even turn on. I don't know what to do... Help Please??
you need a jtag.If it wont go into download or recovery its gone.
What do you, Jtag? I've got a usb jig, does that work? Or are they the same thing?
*What do you mean
aren't jigs phone-specific?
Any new info on this? Did jtag worked or whatever. I keep eye on this thread but looks like OP disappeared. Genuinely curious what happened with the phone.
Hmm .. very wierd that phone wont turn on ... i have broken Odin flashes purposedly many times myself but always I can get back into it ...
You could try power drain ... remove battery ... press power on button for 10 seconds (WITHOUT BATTERY IN) ... now put battery back in and try to go into Download mode.
Sorry but i got busy with other stuff but wanted to explain to him about the JTag.Its a special box called a RiffBox JTag and what it does is basically wipes the motherboard/bootloader and in most phones repears the bootloader aswell of a fully bricked phone so it can be put into download mode again letting you re-flash via Odin and thus saving your phone.A little miracle that means no more bricked phones. There doesnt seem to be that many around and to buy they aint cheap at all but if you can find a dealer or a phone shop who has one they can do it for you.For example.I bicked my phone and was going to buy the box on ebay.es imported (in spain there isnt any for sale) for 160euros complete or 140 without cables.Searched this site:
http://www.jtagbox.com/riff-jtag-bo...s-unbrick-bricked-phone-riff-box-owners-list/
and found a shop in Barcelona who did it for me for 35euros plus postage "BARGIN!!!!".If you search youtube and google for RiffboxJtag in your country you should find someone with a unit willing to help out or check the link ive given as it has a list of users worldwide.
EDIT:A jig is not a JTag.A jig will boot your SEMI-BRICKED(phone showing some kind of life ex.classic icon of phone/arrow/computor,menu and back arrow lights work e.t.c.) phone into download mode.A FULLY-BRICKED(dead,no signs of life.wont start.no download, recovery, lights nothing.DEAD!!!) phone needs a JTag
@cooza , Thanks for that explanation and site I even found one near me, that some day might come handy.
I must ask now to further clear my doubts, this riffjtag box, like you said is able to "revive" or "unbrick" _any_ bricked SGS2? No matter how bad is it? Im kinda new around these things and trying to suck up as much info/knowledge possible, before I decide to flash/root/?brick? xD haha ( hope not for last one) my phone.

Hi.As i said before there are semi and hard bricked phones.A semi bricked phone can normally be booted into download mode with the 3 button combo or a jig and your away again. It has the usuall symbol of a phone and a PC with a warning sign in the middle of them.Hard bricked is when the bootloader is damaged and there is basically no return. You got yourself a very expensive paper-weight for the office desk. Its like trying to turn on your phone with no battery in it.Dead, gone and not coming back. Before the Riffbox the only solution was the rubbish bin or maybe change the motherboard(but a few years ago that was an extremely pricey task if possible). Now we have the box.You can screw you phone to the point of no return and still the box will bring it back to life as it wipes the motherboard and in the case of the SGS2 also repears the damaged bootloader which is what boots your phone to start with. One thing to know, and i dont know if it happens to everyone but mine came back with 2.3.3 installed but there was no recovery mode.If this happens all you have to do is re-flash via Odin a more reciente firmware WITHOUT PIT FILE and yourll get recovery mode back at reboot.Obviously youll need to plug in your phone before hand to re-install the drivers.Same with Odin.boot to download, plug in,installs, unplug, then open Odin and flash.
EDIT:yourve got my name there so if something ever happens and you need a hand to re-flash after a jtag just send me a private message. Here to help.

Thank you mate! I am getting my SGS2 this week so ive been doing alot of reading and research about everything. Thanks for your contribution and kind offer to help if ever comes to that. Very appreciated.
No worries mate.truth is its very hard to fully hard-brick an i9100.The main thing to watch out for,and its a mistake that first-time users/flashers have done,is to flash there i9100 phones with i9000 firmware by mistake. An SGS is not an SGS2 and if they are mixed you WILL hard-brick your device. Here on XDA everything is clearly marked and on their right pages so you cant go wrong if you take your time dont rush-in.But just in case you havnt seen it heres the thread:

Hi, dont bother faffing with it mate, if you have only had it a day take it back and tell them it wouldnt boot after an automatic Kies update. If they cant turn it on they wont know you bricked it until it gets back to the factory and to be honest after selling 10 million of these babies they wont even bother checking it out, they'll just put it into spares or straight recondition it.
I did the same thing to my xoom, PC world couldnt turn it on so they just gave me another.
Hi!
I just had the weirdest experience with my sgsii
I have been using the unofficial vsync patched cm10 rom for this modelfor the last month or so.
I have been updating at least one per week but this week I decided to give my phone a break and not flash it... i am actually really busy at job.
Suddenly tonight, the phone looked like when you have a SOD... so i just pulled the battery.
Now, it does not pass from the first logo stage, just prior to start booting.
I cannot access cwm recovery either, but download mode seems to work-
Now the odd thng is that i am attempting to flash somethng to get the phone working but it gets stuck in the step "NAND Write start!".... it goes no furter than that...
I have chosen the options auto reboot and f.reset time.
a pda file, phone and csc file from the eaked jb rom.....
The system I am attempting to flash from is a windows 7 pro 64 bit.... and odin is Odin3 v1.85...
Please, tell me i didnt get a brick and there is a way tofix it... :crying:
EDIT: Desperated, i tried to flash latest jb leak again, and chose the pit file that comes with it, which re-partitions the phone...
After 20 minutes not responding, i pulld the battery out... now i cannot even enter download mode....nothing....nada....
Sounds like you bricked it, good job.

too bad never repartition unless you make your own pit file with heimdall .. if you would've wait a couple hours I just pmed you.
and for other people instead of flashing samsung's bricksquadroms you can flash CM9 resurrection edition. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419102
Make a pit file with heimdall of your own device. Don't trust pitfile that comes with a rom.
I re-partitioned my device and i got like 3GB intern memory back.
There's probably a way to get your device alive. it isn't the mmc cap bug so. search some threads on xda about brickbugs etc of galaxy phones and you'll find people who hardbricked and unbricked their device.
Probably usb jig could get you into download mode i'm not sure though. Or else jtag. Ask some people over there they will know it
I will try to revive it with jig.... i must find the thingy though.,..... if not.. i will send it to the service but i'm not sure i'm on warranty....
Being not patient made me f*ck it up bad....
Any clue on how to recover a phone after re-partitioning.... i really don't know where to start...
EDIT: JIG does not switch it on either... why did i have to re-partition?!??!?!?!?!?!
That was a dumb move....... any more ideas?
If you cant enter recovery or download mode you have no choice but to JTAG repair or mobo replacement.
Hard brick.... on its way to service
Wish me luck..
Mobo replacement it is, this incident will at least teach you to be patient, I explained you my problem in PM, I waited for 1 week for USB jig to arrive from eBay then flashed stock ROM. I trust the f/w it came with the most.

USB JIG didn't work at all..... I have one and it was not able to boot the phone ....
Isn't this kind of brick fixable with Jtag?
Sent from my GT-I9100
Ok, before I repartitioned, making the problem worse, I was experiencing some kind of R/W problem..... there was something odd with the nand because I was able to boot in download mode, but not in recovery (CWM) mode....
Then, when I plugged the phone to the computer, Odin was able to recognize the phone.
I followed some thread around XDA to flash 4.1.2 leak from sammy and when I hit the "Start" button in Odin, it would not pass from the first stages, revealing that R/W or I/O problem.... the internal nand was, somehow broken.... it didn't read or write properly.... so, even If i could find a workaround, I would have lost some internal storage (some posts talk about around 3 Gb or something similar as lost space in these cases).... that is IF i had been able to fix it..... but then, that's what warranty is for..... so I gave it a last (dumb) try..... including the pit file, which attempted a format, which ended messing (i would say the f. word) everything up.
The good side is that unable to even boot, at least i lost the blue loading bar the vsync patched cm10 mod has in the first bootup screen.... which could have revealed to sammy that I was tempering with unofficial roms....
Lesson learned: Be patient people: But also, don't think this could not happen to you: The phone was perfectly working the last time I saw it... and I even was making some phone calls and browsing the internet.... I mean... it gave no prior symptoms or warnings... I t just died..... I guess I have to be glad I'm not one of those people whose phone gets caught up on fire on their pockets for malfunctioning.....
Now waiting for it to come back revived from samsung..... I have hope
hope it will be able to recover
Great: After losing the phone and past almost three months, samsung says the phone has been manipulated and the warranty is voided....
I wasn't able to flash back an original firmware prior to sending it to the tech service.....
What do you recommend me to do?
I guess paying for the repair would be quite expensive....

So no magic word or secret passphrase so they will upgrade my device to a SGSIV for free?

Does anyone have any experience with this in the past to know more or less how expensive bill could I be facing for the repair?

Dude, it WAS caused by flashing something.
Initially your device wasn't "bricked" and was likely a kernel issue and possibly a dirty usb data connection.
The point when it was bricked was when you tried flashing the pit file, had bad connection and you then pulling battery. This f**ked your nand chip up and only way to fix it is to replace motherboard.
You will need to either purchase a mobo replacement and replace it yourself or pay somebody to purchase/replace it for you. Probably looking at around £100.
When bricks happen, you really need to BRICK it before claiming warranty.
I've got a couple of guys here that own a PhD in bricking.
Brick is the new flash.

Last night i was browsing the internet when suddenly it got stuck and i had remove the battery to restart. But the problem is that it didnt restart.
I can only go in to download mode. But cant seem to flash via odin it fails atfer nand write. And i am not able to find the files for my mobile..as many files here were on hotfile server and it seems to have been closed.
Please help me regarding this matter how should i proceed?? how do i get it to start ??
Last resort would be to go the service center but i would like to try to fix it before.. And warranty also expired a while back ..
I get complete ( write) operation fail after nand write..
do u think my hardware has blown up or something ?? or is it just sofware problem ?
I am using odin V 3.04 .. On odin version 1.85 it usually doeant go on after nand write and stays on it ..
Please help me here .. I really would like to fix my phone : (
Can't you go to Recovery using Volume Up+Home+Power ? the symptoms you are telling are kinda dangerous. At what stage the Odin flashing fails? if its at the factoryfs, than i am afraid you are facing a super brick here.
Look for firmware on AndroidFirmwares.net or Samsung-Updates.com, you don't need to use the exact same firmware that was originally on the phone, any firmware for your carrier will do (make sure it's I9100G though) & if you're going to go back to a custom rom as soon as you get your phone working normally again, any firmware from any carrier will do.
Search for Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread, though some of the stuff he mentions is I9100 specific (advice to flash specific files) a lot of the other stuff is generic I9100x stuff which you should try if you find you can't get a successful Odin flash.
But if it keeps failing at NAND write having tried a lot of different I9100G stock firmwares, the NAND might be cactus, which means you need a motherboard replacement. But I'd try a lot of stock roms before I conceded that if I were in your situation. Often these things can be fixed by persevering.
@alvinasnow Nope i cant go into recovery mode.. If i could it would have been very easy after then.. Only download mode opens up.. And i tried different things flashing bootloader, kernel, firmware, pit,csc , everything fails at nand writing .. So is there a way out of this ??
@MistahBungle I was afraid that might be the answer motherboard replacement.. I tried different firmwares and even flashing via different Methods but its always the same.. i will go to the sites you mentioned to try more firmwares..
But i think my only option would be to go to a samsung service center i guess :-/ ?? they would be able to fix it right ???

Yep, but it's cheaper, faster and very easy to do it yourself
Inviato dal mio GT-I9100
Yep. Sourcing a 2nd hand motherboard online somewhere & either replacing yourself or paying a local mobile repair shop (non Samsung service centre) to replace will be much cheaper than paying a service centre to put a new board in.
So Basically there is no way to save my internal memory data :-/ ????
Changing the motherboard i guess would mean all gone with not a single hope of recovery.. OR i get to keep my data after the change ??
If you didn't back your data up, no. I guess you could contact companies who recover data from dead hard drives & maybe they can help, but that's a real longshot & will be very expensive if it's possible.
I did one back up 50-55 days ago when i went to custom rom .. so i will be losing pretty much only data in last month or so .. not much ..
But i still dont understand why the motherboard needs to be changed ?? i mean the download mode opens and everything .. odin fails to write ..
So nand failure basically means motherboard got screwed??
Are there other flashing softwares better then odin ??
I will have to actually wait till tomorrow to see what does samsung has to say in this regard as its off today ..So thought one last fight lol ..
And one more thing the battery is draining really fast and pretty much heating up in minutes when i put it on charge ..
And when i remove the charger .. the charging battery logo does not disappear i have to remove battery for it to disappear.. and the logo also stays when i remove the battery while the charger is still connected ..so have to remove the charger to make it go away .. basically cut all power for the logo to go away ..
As I said in my first post to this thread, you might as well keep trying/flashing firmwares, but you claimed to have already done a lot of that. What you're describing is symptomatic of the NAND being corrupted. It's too time consuming for service centres to replace just the NAND (removing/re-soldering components like that is fiddly), so they simply replace the whole board (and charge you a lot to do it).
OK...That extra information you supplied in your last post might give you an easier/cheaper fix. What you've just described sounds a lot like the USB board/port is on its way out. Replacing this yourself is cheap & easy to do (you just have to wait for the part to be delivered once you order it online); there's a guide in the General section which has all the info you need (search for replace USB charger board). Do that, then see if you can get a successful Odin flash. If you can, happy days. If you can't, then you replace the motherboard one way or another (or get a new phone).
This may or may not fix your problem; it may be a case of the NAND corrupted and the USB board needing replacing, but you're only going to know if you replace the board first.
You may fol a link in my signature for revival of ur phone.
From the OP: 'I can only go in to download mode'.

flash stock
^^^^^
Did you not read the OP/rest of the thread as well ? He tried to do that on a number of occasions, but something was tripping him up.
Initially it seemed fairly obvious it was likely NAND corruption, though in the OP's last post to this thread, the things he mentioned suggested a faulty USB board may have been stopping him getting a successful Odin flash.
So it was suggested he replace that given how cheap it is to do, and to try flashing stock again. That was a week ago, and depending on where in the world the OP is, he may well be still waiting for the part to arrive.
Actually i got confused bcoz he again told he can boot in download mode then his mother board cant b faulty its the usb port maybe
