Not everyone buys insurance. It's an option.

Gorilla glass is marginally more shatter resistant, but it's main strength is scratch RESISTANCE. You can still scratch it with the quartz in ordinary sand though...

+1. Not sure why everyone thinks that if a device has Gorilla Glass that means it is shatter proof. We probably wont have true shatter proof phones for a long time. The flexible screens will makes things a lot better but who knows how far away they really are.

put a case on the thing, it has strong perpendicular impact but horrible parallel impact, so just put a case on it to keep the sides from getting hit.

Technogen is spot on. I paid $740 for my device at Verizon, broke it within about a week of having it. First device to damage. Gorilla glass is as strong as they claim, with head on impacts. Honestly you could probably drive a finishing nail into wood with it. However, it's just like the grain in wood. On the face of the glass it's super strong but if it takes a side impact such as dropping it and it landing on one of the edges or a corner, just like if the device is vertical and lands standing it with the charge port or power button facing the concrete, it will shatter because it's designed to be so strong for taking impacts on its face, it's quite brittle the other way.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 4 Beta

The main point of gorilla glass is scratch resistance. They never have and never will claim it's shatter proof, because it's not.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app

How could any chemically hardened glass be shatter proof? Harder stuff is generally more brittle. And chemical hardening places the internal structure of the glass under constant stress.

Insurance is your friend I've always had it but I'm gonna insist on a brand new one I don't want a refurbished phone

Eh only thing I'm I think as far as gorilla glass is whatever just a fancy name more scratch resistant ? Meh! Without a screen protector good luck! Seriously with this phone after my first sreen crack always have a decent case with a screen protector.

What I've seemed to find is that the glass it's self is reasonably scratch proof. The coating on the glass, on the other hand, not so much. Have you looked into the cost of replacement?

i just got my new one in yesterday and i had my old one about month and i dropped it with hard shell case on on the very bottom left corner and cracked it across whole screen no big deal then i dropped it on concrete face first and destoryed the phone lol
phone is super strong until that glass gives way then a gopod hit will break it in half just as i sent it to asurion in half lmao wait til they get a surprize
on a positive note this one is binned fast so yes lower voltages

What's funny is recently someone brought in a DNA that had an Otterbox Defender case on it w/ a broken screen. It's a shame Skech doesn't make cases for the DNA.... there was a lady who came in awhile ago wanting a new Skech case. She was in a car accident and the car flipped over. Apparently the car had rolled over her iphone and the iphone was still ok(but the Skech case was scratched up pretty bad). We ended up putting the case up on display to tell customers about what happened to it.

I don't get why people complain. Gorilla glass does not mean indestructable. If you drop you phone on concrete and it lands a certain way it may break. Stop dropping your phone is the best solution imo.

Nope.
1) There's no direct correlation between brittle and hard. An advanced material, like Gorilla Glass, *may* be harder and less brittle at the same time compared to regular glass.
2) If I remember correctly, all Gorilla Glass demonstrations of the past involved smashing a small piece with a hammer. Gorilla Glass is definitely less brittle than regular glass.

Meanwhile, the weight and size are unusual in part because of its large multi-touch screen with a size reaches 4.3 inches diagonally and getting the same HTC Sensation resolution (540 x 960 pixels). This display is for displaying images in three dimensions without requiring the user to buy special glasses separately, in addition to the glass used is Gorilla Glass, a material highly resistant to both scratches and bump

Glass would be brittle. It is just the nature of ceramic materials.
In this test you talking about. Was the glass suspended by two support point with the impact load being in the middle? Or was the middle slowly being pushed down?
these mobile glass test should be done horizontally normal to a side or corner. to imitate a fall. A normal load from the surface test is for test people punching their phones or a stressful push.
Would anyone here know the density of our screen? Maybe it is the same as the corning glass but from a different manufacture.

Anyone scratch their screen yet?

Best Screen Protector?

We've had this phone out for about 4 months now and I was just wondering what screen protectors you guys are using, post a link of where you bought it and personal opinion about the protector and any other helpful information! I've been using this cheap protector for such a long time, now it's time to see what's really out there!:good:
Mine is built into my Otterbox case. I forget which model, I'll have to look for you, and I absolutely hate it. It's raised very slightly off my screen so I have to press down a with a little more effort, it hinders my typing speed. I'm planning on taking an exacto blade and taking out the screen protector and using one of the regular ones, but damn it I always get air bubbles

You have an otterbox defender. And I'm considering doing the same thing. I'm thinking of getting one of those "wet apply" screen protectors to avoid getting bubbles. I might just get a ghost armor next time I go to the mall.

I wanted a ZAGG invisible shield, as I had one for the HTC EVO V 4G and it was the 1st screen protector I used, it was great quality. I searched everywhere and could not find one for the DNA, only 1 store on Amazon had it and it got bad reviews. I decided to go with the Armor Military Grade one. Had it on for a couple days, so far feels just as great as the ZAGG.

I use this screen protector on mine and I love it. This was my first screen protector where you need to apply wet and I haven't looked back since putting it on. It doesn't take away from the display and fits perfect and is easy to put on. I ordered mine off amazon and got it cheaper than 12$ at the time. I also got a lifetime warranty on it so if it gets too worn down I will just get a new one. Deffidently the best one I have found so far.

Word! I can't stand the feel of screen protectors. The feel of the glass in way better. I treat my phone like a baby, and sit in an office all day. I guess if I were out in the field I might put a protector on it. But this is the whole point of all this high-tech glass, to make them virtually impossible to break or scratch.

Glass is glass. It will still shatter with enough force (not that a screen protector would save it from that). But even still, small particles of sand and rock and such can still easily scratch the screen. Don't believe its scratch proof when its scratch resistant.

Two days and a broken screen.

I have had so many Samsung phones, and I have dropped all of them in so many ways and have never had a broken screen. I got my S5 on Thursday and got a case right away. Today my phone fell face down from my chair like 12 inches high. To my disappointment, my phone got a crack on the screen from side to side. So much for that gorilla 3 screen.

Bummer man, all in how it lands, even with a case there's always a chance that the shock will hit just right (or wrong). I don't even bother with cases anymore because I always see people with their shattered phone screens in big cases. I think cases are probably the best for avoiding nicks to the body of the phone, but most are not gonna prevent a cracked screen.
i think if you didn't have the case, the screen would have shattered to an extent of being unusable, so it could have been worst. Typically, decent cases protect small falls due to the case's lip. I guess you were very unlucky.

Well you can still purchase insurance or a extended warranty. Also, if you purchased the phone with a premium credit card, your credit card company will fix it for you for free.
All of the broken screen threads blame the phone, and it always seems to be some ridiculous drop. "I dropped my phone two inches onto a pile of cotton balls and unicorn fur...screen shattered".
Gorilla glass is not break resistant, it is scratch resistant. It sucks that your screen is broken, but in no way is it Corning's or Samsung's fault.

Been SO curious about the glass screen protectors. you like them? I have always used the PET (hard plastic ones not the 3m film) and think they are great. Does the glass ones scratch less than the PET film ones?
OP, that really sucks man! However, If you dont want to use insurance (its probably about a $150 deductible) if you can live with it for a couple weeks, replacement glass should start popping up on ebay and such. I have replaced glass for many friends on a lot of different phones and its SUPER easy. You can usually buy a kit with the tools you need and everything for less than $20. :good:

Screens do get scratched and you must need a protector.
Sent from Galaxy Note 3 SM-n9005
I wouldn't say it's easy to scratch the screen. It is possible though and it's much cheaper to replace a screen protector than a screen. Sounds like you were using a cheap plastic one. I'd recommend you look into a tempered glass protector which will not compromise the look and feel of the device compared to plastic protectors and you certainly won't have any problems with the protector being marked with the pen.

WOW... I have been using one for 2 months now... never scratched it. PLUS you can get a new one for the price of shipping from them as they are lifetime.
I recommend a screen protector with ALL S view cases. they tend cut into the screen at mid point. Temper glass should be better. Get one with smooth edges though.
I have a tempered glass screen protector that I bought on ebay for about 8 dollars. About 2 months ago, and it looks great on the phone. Doesn't compromise the looks of the screen and doesn't scuff up when I use the pen.

I recommend a screen protector with ALL S view cases. they tend cut into the screen at mid point. Temper glass should be better. Get one with smooth edges though.

I got marks of S-pen. Guys what so you think about the Ishieldz screen protector

Are the S-pen marks from worn out tips or new tips?
I have the same screen cover and I have no such issue. Screen is as flawless as when I got my screen cover.
Alot of ppl with the scovers have been complaining about the screen getting a press line in it from the bottom of the sview window.
I have always used screen protectors. The one I used on my last 2 devices (including my N3) is Ghost Armor. A bit pricey, but they have a lifetime warranty
i have seen many customer bringing in multiple devices scratched. it almost always happens in situations you least expect. i had a construction worker come in. phone was beat to death and the screen was perfect yet a lady came in after bumping her phone on the side of her car and scratching it bad so you just never know. i got a zagg glass on mine and its awesome. feels just like the screen. why take the chance.

Yup.
Why risk a 6-700 dollar device?
I am careful with my phone and haven't noticed any scratches.
As for the s-pen leaving marks, you could try using a a different tip. Your Note 3 should have come with extra tips, if you look closely they are different.
