Hello I have rooted my Galasy S4 and flashed cm onto the device. My question is how do i free up the internal storage? I still only have less than 9.57gb of available storage. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not much really frees up the space because you can break programs or the phone. You can use FolderMount to symlink files from the SD to the Memory Card. Your limited to 3 symlinks unless you buy the program. Myself I couldn't get it to work but maybe I was linking wrong.

Samsung has reserved 6 GB of space for the system, etc. There is no way to get more space, other than an external SD card.
I just have seen screenshots of available storage at 16.00gb mine only shows 9.57gb. That is the only reason I have asked. Thanks for the responses.
There isnt much we can do about that. All we can do is get a larger sd card
Due to variances in how manufacturers measure their space (GB vs GiB: a short version is using 1000MB = 1GB when, strictly speaking, 1024MB = 1GiB), you will never have the same amount of advertised space available on a device.
A device advertised as 16GB will have between 14.3-14.6GiB of available space, depending on the manufacturer. Cut out ~6 of that for Samsung's bloat, and you're left with the 9.x that we currently have.
Whenever possible, store items on your external storage and research if some of the apps you are using will allow the App2SD function (can anyone verify if this still works? I read somewhere it was disabled with the JellyBean update).
Hope that helps, and good luck managing your space. Perhaps its time we all stop being such space hogs ...........(on second thought...nah!)

I have a Galaxy S2 Epic (SPH-D710) stock ROM, rooted with the zermax kernel and fited with a Sandisk 16Gb class 4 micro sd card.
Problem discovered while installing Navfree. Got the error message "not enough space". So I can't install and move.
Settings>Applications>Maganage applications>All shows
112Mb used of 1.9Gb available.
Settings>Storage>USB storage shows
Total space is 11.5Gb and Available space 11.5Gb
Settings>Storage>SD card shows
Total space 14.83Gb (aka 16Gb!) and Available space 14.81Gb.

That's perfectly normal dude.. The system uses a chunk of the built-in 16GB for the ROM's use (/system, /data, /cache plus a few other partitions), and the rest is assigned to /sdcard, hence the 11.5GB (I know, that's kind of like false advertisement but what you wanna do ? Sue Samsung ?)
And for the external SD, that's also normal. I'm surprised you didn't notice this detail on the capacity of your harddrive before : end-users tend to think in "base2" (whereas 1KB=1024 bytes, 1MB=1024KB, 1GB=1024MB, and so on), while media manufacturers count in "base10" (i.e. 1KB=1000bytes, 1MB=1000KB, etc). It's a cheap way to reach the symbolic "GB", "TB", "PB" (etc) landmarks more quickly (at least, quicker than the competition).
Do the maths, you'll see that over 16GB that makes a huge chunk of "magically" disappeared storage, but it never was there to begin with.. Also false advertising there, kind of.. But we're all in the same boat here. :S

Yea, I understand that, that why I put "(aka 16Gb") as I'm referring to a 16Gb card but listing 14.83Gb available. It was to not cause confusion, guess I failed there!
The problem I'm having is, I need around 4Gb (apparently) to install Navfree. I only have 2Gb available to apps even though I have 25Gb of storage.
People must be installing Navfree, so I must be doing something wrong.
16GB is 16000000000btye/1024/ 1024/1024 = 14. 9GB.
So it is 16Gb and not 16GB.
No such 4gb large program for android. The program is maybe 10-20mb. And the 4gb is the DATA. You can store the 4gb in your SD card.

yeah i was gonna say : you might find some bloatware on the android market here and there, but by and large it is still pretty much immune to this phenomenon..
A 4GB program is something you might encounter under Windows, but Linux ?

Is it possible to resize the partitions of the internal storage on my s2, and if so, how?
And whilst on the subject of the internal storage, can someone please clarify if flashing a custom ROM will affect files on the "USB storage" partition, or only the files stored on the "internal" storage partition?

nope, flashing a rom (either stock or custom) *should* not alter usb or internal sdcard storage. If it does, that's a surefire sign that the guy who cooked the said rom has no friggin clue whatsoever about what he's messing with and to steer clear from this particular rom...
It must be possible to alter the partitioning scheme to resize the internal storage. At least that's the theory, we're dealing with a flavor of linux here, and everything is doable with linux -and enough effort and dedication.
However, as this partition lies on the same emmc chip as the system, data, cache and kernel/recovery/bootloader partitions, I highly recommend *NOT* to mess with it in any way -not unless you have another smartphone lying around that you could use as backup while your borked SGS2 is shipped back to the samsung service centre, and you're prepared to spend some $$ over the repairs (since rooting is absolutely necessary for this kind of manipulation, your warranty would theoretically be null&void in the process)...

I've just received my HTC desire x, checking the specs there is written
that the internal memory should be 4GB, but I have just 1GB.
the total space shows 1.09 GB (screenshot attached)
on the HTC website there's written
Total storage: 4 GB, available capacity varies*
and then *Available storage is less due to phone software.
Is it possible that the OS takes 3GB? Seems a bit too much for me...
Any idea?

This is correct man. There is no issue or problem. The system takes ~3gb. Cos imagine when you are factory resetting your phone. The original OS file (called ROM) will reside in that memory with a whole lot of other backup stuff which you cant access.
This is why ppl use CUSTOM ROMS, cos we remove bloatware and other things.
What you see in that screenshot is same as mine and as other. Just buy an external card and it will rock
and please go to about > software update > PRESS CHECK NOW even though "Scheduled Check" is ticked cos there are updates and possibly u have one waiting also.

anyway i cant see why 1gb isnt enough for apps and games. if you have a sd card, it will be more than enough because of the ability to move apps to sd.

Plus a few more like radio boot and / mount point. It's up around 4GB.

Is it possible to reformat partitions? Why not to have internal memory (emmc) - 1,1GB and system/942MB merged? I'm not using emmc, cuz I have SDCard for all my stuff, so 1,1 Gb are empty, but I have insufficient space on system.

I recently started getting not enough space when updating my apps, etc and when i go to storage i noticed that the internal storage seems to have 2 partitions.
- One with 1.97GB
- The other one with 11.36GB
Besides that i have a SD card with 32GB.
I am using SuperNexus Milestone 1 and it is great, but this running out of space is not working right for me... Shouldnt the entire internal memory that comes in the Galaxsy S2 be used as 1 internal storage...? It's been so long since i rooted my phone that i cant remember if this was how it was originally setup...
Any ideas?

That's how it was out of the package.
The 11.36 is for data storage, pictures, videos, random user data
The 2gb partition is where apks and config databases get installed.
How much free space do you have on that partition?

Right now it has 200MB free, but then it shows Internal storage 7GB free and SD card 20GB free...
I was just hoping that the ROMs would use/see the entire internal storage as 1 and the actual SD card as another one. But it seems like this is how android is...?

Its not how android is. Its how non-nexus devices are.
Nexus devices utilize one large partition for /data and storage. But with the downside that there is no external SD

Notice the part where I said DEVICES? Yeah that part.
It has nothing to do with the ROM you are on and everything to do with the damn partition table which you should not mess with at all.
Go to the ROM's topic and see that everyone else has the same layout as you.

I'm running Liquid Smoth 3.1, and noticed the internal memory (for apps and such) is separated from the internal SD. Can we increase the internal memory allocation? I don't recall if this was common or not before I installed the ROM.

This is how old Samsung used as a separated partition(2GB/Remaining space) structure.
I could confirm that newer models only have one partition.
I had researched days of searches and still did NOT find confirmed easy solutions like flashing ZIP files.
(My research -> Link)
I REALLY DO wish someone could guide me a solution to repartition as one total 16GB(Like newer Galaxy)
or expending 2GB system partition to any bigger size.
I still did NOT find the solution and still looking.
The only last method I did not try - Working with ADB command which I need to consider to brick my phone.
But this is my primary phone that I use.
Even worse, KitKat ROM(I am using beanStalk ver 4.4.4001) does not allow to use App2SD function.
I have to manage all of my apps+data+decent space within 2 GB limitation even if I have 11GB available
space as an Internal Storage (NOT External SD).

Just wanted to get this straight once and for all from you, the experts.
I have bought this cheapo Chinese device (yeah, I know...)
The guy selling it swore on his life that the device had 12gb of storage for app installation.
I didn't quite believe that so I asked him to send me a benchmark screenshot to see what was the storage situation and he sent me this:

So as it says, while it has 12.5 GB of "Internal Storage", it only has 0.68 GB available of System Storage...
And my understanding is that, lots of apps simply Won't install anywhere else besides the System Storage, and even if you can Move the app to the internal storage, it will Still take up some space on the system storage...
Am I understanding this correctly?
If that is so then, does that mean that after my apps use up that measly 680 MB of space on the device I am "SOL" and I won't be able to install anything else on the device??

look ..if he means by system storage (the size of the ROM that will be installed) that mean you have 12 GB for your apps and that what i think it means(no android system can take 12gb !!)......and for moving your apps....you can try towelroot to root your device and install any app that can help you moving your apps....or try to go to settings>>apps>>and press the menu button and see if there is a option called...preferred installation bath or something like that>>>set it to removable sd card

I found this on another page:
"System Storage" is where the OS and the System Applications are installed. This could also be considered where the User application are installed (based on your question). User installed applications are installed in /data/apps, settings and app data is stored in /data/data, and then application cache data is stored in /cache. These are all part of the "System Storage".
Internal Storage is an area that is used like an sdcard. As far as the Android OS is concerned, it is an sdcard. Some applications may save data to it, but it is mainly used as direct storage for your stuff. Like pictures taken with the camera, music, ringtones, things like that.
You cannot just adjust the size of system memory. Is it technically possible, yes. But doing so could require you to have knowledge of linux tool, rooting, custom roms, recoveries, and even possibly having to compile your own linux kernel and ROM or other information that I am not thinking of at the moment. Which is well beyond the scope of this site.

So that basically means is that all apps by default will install themselves or lots of info about them on the 1gb System Storage... And that translates to running out of space almost instantly if I start installing apps...
Perhaps the Root option could help alleviate some of this space constriction by forcing all apps to install in the Internal storage and leave the System storage completely alone?

yeah that's right ..root can help...but i don't think 12 gb is gone like that just for system !> :cyclops:
