My wife recently purchased the Lg Optimus L9 and wants to be able to tether it to her ipad. Is this possible for this phone. We have T-mo and unlimited data plan. It's saying "our plan doesn't support tethering to another device" but previously she was using a blackberry and my old G2 and it worked fine. The phone isn't rooted and I'm not even sure she would want me to root it but she probably would if this was the only way. Thanks in advance for any info/help.

What model of L9? You can try first update to jellybean (use ROM not from t-mobile). Cause I have V20D Baltics for P760 and tethering works fine with my laptop without root (but I don't know about ipad cause I don't have one).
EDIT: But it more sounds as your data plan doesn't support tethering. I'm not really sure how it works in t-mobile but tethering is additionally paid option. Maybe you used your limit for tethering? Cause as I see unlimited data plan has limited tethering e.g. http://www.androidcentral.com/t-mobile-unlimited-plans-may-get-tethering-bundled-starting-wednesday
2 options:
1.) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201062
This requires root and works.
2.) Try "FoxFi" & "FoxFi AddOn" from the Play Store.
I could not get these to work with Jelly Bean but you may have better luck.

Is this possible? In a perfect world I could go to Best Buy, grab a GoPhone LG Thrive, pop my wifes non data family plan sim in there, somehow block 3g, and she could keep her current plan untouched and use WiFi for the occasionaly internet usage.
Thoughts?
I don't remember the settings in stock 2.2 Froyo, but on the CM7 roms there are widgets to set data 2G, 2G/3G, 3G and on/off. You can probably download an app that'll do that.
I'm pretty sure that will block the data, but my fear is that as soon as AT&T recognizes the model number on the phone they will add a data plan to the account.
Froyo 2.2 including LG Thrive has Data ON/OFF switch, so don't bother using the phone without data plan. You can also delete the APN settings, so the phone cannot use data even the latter is enabled. It sounds very wierd the operator to activate a data plan without your permission.

Wi-Fi will work. Wi-Fi has a separate switch. There is a switch that turns on/off only the 3G/EDGE/GPRS data.

cool, but I just hope it's not like the iphone in that they require a data plan to even pop you sim card in it.
1st review on amazon seems to confirm my fear... "Be aware AT&T will make you buy a data plan for $5 per month for 10 MB, even if you never use it because it's a smart phone. "
I read that LG Thrive goes with a prepaid plan, so you buy the phone and don't use the new sim...and you can insert your wife's sim.

I vaguely recall reading about this new "feature". Happened around the time the new iThing came out. Reading around a little, it seems that more recent contracts have clauses that let them do this.
Some posts mentioned that BEFORE you use the smartphone, to call ATT and place a data-block on the account. Seems to have worked for some.
So has anyone successfully purchased a LG Thrive, popped an AT&T post-paid SIM in and use it without a data plan?
You may want to consider buying an Optimus T, unlocking it and using it with ATT. Both are GSM. You'll then have access to all the dev here and not be bound to ATTs draconian crap.

it can be used without a dataplan if you use your own sim card. I bought one for my daughter and since I was at the end of my billing cycle I decide to wait until the new billing cycle to add the data plan, she was using the phone without problems for over a week, and was able to use wife for data. One thing is that when you call ATT to add the Data Plan you need to give a different IMIE cuz once they try to add the IMEI of the GO phone the system will say the phone can not provisioned with premium Data plans. What I did was just to gave her my Captivate IMEI since it was never registered with ATT.
Hello all,
I will be soon getting this at&t optimus g and I have data plan which allows tethering.
I will be unlocking this phone for using it on my airtel sim in india.
Last I had att phone,it was giving me errors to enable tethering and I am not sure if att would allow tethering on unlocked phone.
I did google but did not see any options to enable tethering.
what are my options to enable tether and remove all the bloat of at&t??
As I see,
1) Flash the international or canadian ROM of stock variety and use tether.
2) any other option
I want to stay stock jelly bean.
pls help.
thanks.

did that last at&t phone give you trouble with tethering on a non-at&t network? If that is true, then I guess it is the case that the phone requires authentication from the network before it will enable tethering. interesting. I know that with previous phones I had to flip a bit (enable -> disable) for some entry in a system SQLite DB so that the phone would stop trying to authenticate my tethering. I was rooted, and using wifi-tether, but it wouldn't work unless I turned that thing off.
On *this* phone, you always have the option of using wifi-tether and then you don't have to mess with the tethering authentication at all. All I did was root, download wifi-tether and set the profile to SGSIII. Things may have changed with jellybean, though.
Last phone were two actually.
First was motorola atrix 4g and then lumia 900.
Both had this issue.
Now I want to stay as stock rom as possible as I don't want to fiddle too much and waste efforts and all.
I was thinking,
Some carriers allow tethering by default.
What will happen if I root, bootloader unlock the device and flash different carrier firmware like say Canadian firm ware ?
Can it work out?
Making this e970 convert to say canadian or international ?
Can we debrand this device,we don't have any lte networks which are cellphones compatible.
So wont mind giving up on lte.
Thanks for reply.

Working for LGOG too...
I'm stock, rooted, and unlocked. I use the tethering feature with no problems all the time. It authenticates just fine.

Just wondering if anyone who still has Verizon unlimited data and a LG V10 has updated to Marshmallow and can confirm that Foxfi still works?
I would like to know definitively before I upgrade.
Thanks,
It works!!

Can confirm it works here as well. Actually it works better. I used to have issues getting it to work on LP sometimes but it works right away on MM. And man does MM run so much nicer. This is a very good upgrade to the v10.
Does it really work?
I really really want to upgrade my V10, but I really need FoxFi (I used 167gb last month). Has anyone at all not had success upgrading to 6.0 and using FoxFi, or is it really all good? I've only seen 3 responses in all my searches, but they've all been a yes. Thanks in advance.
Newbe question
If you have an unlimited plan, why would you need FoxFi? Maybe I'm not understanding what it does. Is there any benefit if you don't have an unlimited plan?
FoxFi is a mobile hotspot app. With it you can connect, I believe, up to 10 wifi devices with no extra monthly fee...
I assume that it still uses your data plan if your not unlimited?
Foxfi works!

Hi,
So I waited a few days after starting this thread, and since there weren't any negative responses, I went ahead and upgraded this morning. It took about 20 minutes for the whole thing to complete, and I turned on Foxfi almost right away, and it worked just fine. So no worries, go ahead and do it. I haven't noticed any big changes yet, other than the fingerprint scanner being more responsive, as some in other threads have pointed out.
Thanks,

Newbie question
I have a question guys, will I be able to use as wifi hotspot my lg v10 from Verizon if i'm using it in another carrier? With or without foxfi .I will take it to mexico so i hope wifi hotspot works there with a different carrier ... thank you!
VZW mobile hotspot from VZW is roughly a dollar a day and if you have the UNL plan, the data usage is UNL.... You can also turn it on and off for no fee. Works perfect. how much cheaper can you get? They dont care how much you stream. I just bought it for use on vacation so my daughter could tether.....worked perfect
ive been using the verizon model on net10 and was having trouble activating the hotspot because the phone would recognize the sim card as not being from verizon, i came across a thread for the lg g4 verizon model and tried it on the v10 and it worked. im guessing you have to be rooted for this to work. heres the link to the original guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g4/general/how-to-enable-native-hotspot-unlimited-t3166435
another alternative might be foxfi

I have a customer who successfully used FoxFi on MM, non-rooted.
Sent from my LG-H918 using Tapatalk
for 30 bucks a month unlimited data, I just pay. Turn it on with a phone call and off thru My Vzw, when I need it. Its prorated. I mostly use it traveling with the family so they can use my unlimited data. A buck a day for unlimited data isnt too much to ask I dont think! Specially since root is not looking good.
Hotspots should be freee......... i also used foxfi on non root to enable hotspot on some phones.
Is there a mod to allow tethering on Verizon without it notifying the carrier? I will be receiving my pixel 3 in about a week and will be using it on VZW. I got the google model.
Thanks
I never really got how a carrier could know you are tethering without having access to your phone (seems the phone should not be sharing that information). That being said, I would assume on a google model of the device old methods of masking would still work.
Like this https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/how-to/bypass-verizon-throttling-reaching-15gb-t3702942
Not sure though, as I do not face throttling for tethering.

Just upgrade to the new unlimited plan.
Tethering is included.
Yes. Root, then modify the build.prop by adding the following "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true". Works fine on grandfathered Verizon plan.
