Why are certain ROMS unable to see my files ? - HTC Droid DNA

Why are certain ROMS unable to see the files on my phone, I installed Carbon and was unable to see any of the preexisting files on the phone, so then I installed Viper and they are all there.... This is the first android I have owned with out a SD card, so things are a little different

They're in /data/media, 4.2 changed the file system, googling it will tell you about it, its all over these forums already. Copy from /data/media to /0 and you can see them.

Android 4.2.2 changed the file structure to support multi users. Check for your old data in data/media and data/media/0 for the new data.

The 0 partition only shows 11 GB. And after installing just cm 10.1 it's almost completely full. Is there any way to re-partition so the whole 16 GB will show up in the 0 partition?

You will never see the whole 16gb because the system partition uses up a set portion of it for the os, and apps. On a "clean" phone, you will only see around 11.5-11.9 gb.

Is there anything I need to do to clean up the file structure left over from having a 4.1.2 ROM before or after going to a 4.2.2 ROM? Or just do a regular wipe, wipe cache, davlik cache etc?

If you move to 4.2 copy what want from /data/media then you can delete anything in /data/media. Not /media itself, anything in it, like /data/media/Ringtones.
Edit: do this after you're on a 4.2 ROM, it doesn't really matter but if its not made during a flash you may run into permissions issues and not be able to see the files in there, like pics in gallery, etc.

Upgrading straight from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2

Hey guys, I unlocked the bootloader on my phone and rooted it.now I want to turn S-off and flash a new Rom. My question is, can I just flash a 4.2.2 Rom or do I have to update anything before I do it? Any help would be great!

You can flash a 4.2.2 ROM; however, be aware 4.2.2 uses a different format for SD than 4.1.2 does. The standard practice if coming from 4.1.2 is:
1.Move everything you want to keep, including Titanium backup folder, pics, music, everything...from your SD to a PC.
2. Copy ROM onto your SD storage from PC or download.
3. Boot into recovery and wipe data and cache ONLY.
4. Flash ROM.
5. Boot into new ROM for first time.
6. After it boots up, boot back into recovery.
7. Format SD card (main SD storage only).
8. Boot back into ROM, set it up, and transfer all your personal stuff into the 0 folder on your SD storage.
9. Enjoy!

Yes you will need to have a 3rd party bootloader. Theres a few guides here and on the Main One forums on how to.
Also, to address something you mentioned in your OP...no need to be s-off.
Would not formatting your 'SD Card' cause any issues? Whenever I try to flash an AOSP 4.2.2 ROM it crashes shortly after booting and the power button no longer wakes the phone, would this be the cause?

Yes. You have to follow the directions explicitly. In other words, you have to wipe your sd card the first time.

How would you do that from TWRP? I have format sd card, but that'll wipe all my backups etc.
EDIT: Also, when you flash a ROM, doesn't it automatically wipe all the partitions before it installs? Also, someone mentioned alternative bootloader? Is that necessary, what alternatives are there?

Flashing a ROM doesnt necessarily automatically wipe partitions, and the ones that do dont touch your personal data. An alternative to TWRP would be clockwork mod recovery.

Not seeing Files in TWRP

Has anyone had issues where they could place zips on their internal storage and then when you go to flash in my example, a new kernel, i cannot see it in TWRP. When i have CM10.1 flashed i dont have issues. Im currently on NOS sense 5. when i look at my twrp, its almost like its an old version.

Its the same old 4.2 vs 4.1 folders issue. 4.2 uses /0 which twrp uses by default. The other folder is /data/media, where your 4.1 stuff will be. Put your stuff in /0 or delete it when you use 4.1 ROMs and use /data/media instead. Or browse to either one depending on what you want to flash and which ROM it was downloaded on.

Had the same problem with CWM recovery. Scared me pretty good because I thought I lost some important nandroid backups. CM 10.1 put all my new stuff in /data/media/0/ and left my old stuff in /data/media. CWM only looks for backups in the original one (/data/media/Clockworkmod/backup) so TWRP might do the same.

[Q] Just unlocked and rooted! Now what?

not really new to this stuff, but i am when it comes to the note 2.
props to the guys that put CASUAL together, with little effort other than installing the drivers from the samsung website, a few tries and reboots, 3rd go and it only took maybe 3 minutes to do the work for me.
so, now i am looking for a way to debloat the rom that came with my phone, not ready to jump into the custom flashing yet, but i would like to remove a few things i never use that verizon drops into the rom.
from past experience deleting from the /system/app and /data directories caused issues with stability on my htc rezound.
also one other thought, with the lg enlighten, rebooting with /system as RW would bootloop the phone, the rezound didn't mind at all, how does the note 2 react to being RW?
any suggestions to debloating the current running rom are welcome, i have already had some for custom roms, but more input would be ok too.
Get titanium backup and remove those apps.
Then I'd make a backup and when you are ready to custom flash, get cleanrom. From the sounds of it that is what you are looking for.
that's what i had said before, but eventually i would like to flash a modded rom, but right now i am thinking about just debloating this one, for fun.
one thing that concerns me, has anyone flashed a rom the s-pen doesn't work on?
is that built into the mainboard or a rom specific thing?
wondering so i know to be careful of what i flash, love my s-pen lol

The S-pen is Samsung software that only works on Touchwiz (Samsung based Roms also known as TW) framework, said framework has yet to be ported to AOSP and most likely will not be. It is very rare for TW framework to be ported in a way that works on AOSP Roms.
The S-pen will work on all Roms no matter what but the special features, like pushing the button to make a screenshot, will be there on TW Roms but not AOSP Roms. With Vanilla Rootbox you can make the floating dot show up on the screen when using the S-pen and the other Roms have some implementation of that. If you want to replace some of the features on AOSP Roms you should look into getting GMD Spen Control from the market, also Plasma kernel has new S-pen features built in. It still won't be exactly the same as running a TW ROM but is close enough for me.
All of the custom TW Roms will have full S-pen support just like the stock ROM and in some cases have a little bit extra.

So is flashing a rom done from the sdcard as normal or is it different in any way from a standard flash, new to twrp.
Yup. Just put it on your SD card and flash. Wipe everything but your external card before you flash. lots more to it but that's the cliffnotes version.

You don't have to and you typically don't want to wipe your internal SD memory to flash a rom. From TWRP recovery you should do a Factory rest (which wipes data but not internal SD memory, the cache and the Dalvik cache). After flashing you should wipe cache and Dalvik cache again but not wipe data. To do that go into the Advanced wipe area to only wipe those 2 and not data again.

I corrected my post that yes you also want to wipe data but only from recovery.
What you don't want to do is use a file manager and delete data that way from internal memory. Nor do you normally want to reformat any internal or external memory from recovery.

ok so quick once over, same as the rez, but i only need to do a factory reset and wipe system, caches and flash?
so i can keep internal storage intact no issue?
what about boot?
slightly different from the rez.
just another awesome thing i found for this phone, wondering how well it works and if i could use it to update twrp or maybe even revert to my flashaholic ways with a simple tap and go.

Well I use the second options in TWRP, I can't remember what it is now, under the wipe menu that you have to type yes for that formats the internal memory to get rid of all the BS. It doesn't hurt as long as you know what you are doing. And as long as you only delete old folders that are no longer in use everything will be fine.
TWRP doesn't have any dangerous wipe options at the current moment.

You can use it to update TWRP and download ROMs but I wouldn't flash my Roms from it, you can flash from it but I personally wouldn't. There is also a app named ROM Manager you can flash Roms from but there are a lot of issues when using ROM Manager.
I personally use the Goo Manger app to keep up with my Roms updates.
In TWRP after you click the Wipe button and go to the Wipe sub menu I always click advanced wipe and go in and wipe Data, Cache, Dalvik, and System and then I back out to the Wipe sub menu and click the right hand button, you'll have to type yes for it to work, and that gets rid of all the BS folders and crap so you can start completely fresh. You don't have to do that if you don't want to, I personally like my phone being completely clean when flashing a new ROM.
Yes you can keep internal and boot intact.
All you have to do to go to a new ROM when you boot into TWRP is click Wipe and then slide the little slider in the Wipe sub menu, I believe it says swipe for Factory Reset. That is all you have to do to Clean Flash a ROM.
Something else fun about TWRP is that you can theme it. Here is a TWRP theme collection on XDA:

If you use Titanium to back up apps (which you can do together) and their data before flashing you can restore the apps and data all at once after the flash without having to install each one by one from Google play store. Be sure not to restore system apps or data (no need to back them up either) because it may affect the new rom.
The good part of not reformatting your internal or external memory from TWRP is that your photos, music, etc.will remain after the flash. Even if you choose factory wipe or wipe data in TWRP.

I used titanium backup root to debloat a little, so I am kind of good for now, but made a nandroid of this rooted, debloated stock rom.
I think I found a twrp update with that goo.im app, but I am sure there are more than 4 roms to choose from, I have seen jedi which seemed like what I would want, stock decked out with features and the multi app does all apps, so I am kind of ready to do my first flash.
From what I get from what both or all of you have told me, swipe to factory reset, wipe system and internal, leave boot and others alone.
I wanted to set twrp to save to my sdcard, but didn't see an option to do so.
And thanks for all the input guys.

All you need to do before flashing is the one Factory reset wipe on the first screen of the Wipe area. Just as TWRP advises on that screen. After the flash most go back to the Wipe area then the Advanced area and wipe only cache and Dalvik cache. Your first reboot will take a minute or 2 so be patient.
To save backup to the external card go to the Backup area and at the bottom where it says where it will backup press on it and then you can change the location. It just looks like a label and doesn't look like a button but it is. I would just backup the default checked items. Even that will be 3-4 gigs.

You should also back up the EFS in your first nandroid just in case you ever lose your IMEI or any of that good stuff. Then store that backup in a safe secure space. You won't have to back up the EFS again after the initial backup as long as you always keep that backup safe.

Well Spen with work on all the Roms, the only issue is that it doesn't have all the software features on AOSP as it does on TW. It will have all the same features as stock as long as it is a Touchwiz, TW, ROM. Moon ROM, Jedi, CleanRom (both versions), Beans, MeanBean, Goodness, etc. And you can still add a lot of your stock Spen features back with GND Spen Control.

[Q] Free up space on device

I am in need of freeing up space on my device. Out of the 16Gb I only have 2.xGb available now. I do have at least 2 backups on my phone, and 2 helium backups. Looking at the math, they should not take up that much room:
Stock.zip 1.7G
slim.zip 1.6G
Helium1 642MB
Helium2 733MB
= 4.65G
So that really doesn't make any sense to me. I reviewed my apps and I had a lot of google play cached, but I deleted all of that data through app management. So I can't figure what is taking up all of this space.
1. if I delete my backups from the device, which I have transferred to my computer, and then paste them back in, will they work? Will they work if I format the phone?
2. In reality I would have no problem formatting the phone to wipe everything and flash a rom again via OTG cable through CWM. However, I am at a loss as to what selection(s) in CWM I make to fix my problem.
1) there is actually only 11-12G actually available to the user, on all DNA's, on all ROMs
2) you can move back ups around. i keep a copy of mine in dropbox and on my computer, but never on my phone.
3) you have to have apps, app cache, music, pics, ect to have such little space. you need to look at your /data partition and your /sdcard partition when calculating space.
4) wth is helium?
Helium used to be carbon backup. But I'll look at my directories and review the space used
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Ok. So I was able to free up a bunch of space and removed a single backup, leaving stock.zip on board in case of crashing and need of assistance with Verizon though 99% unlikely to happen. I was having major issues finding where helium stored its data because it is blocked from the user. But luckily the Storage option in >Settings>Storage in slimbean is much greater in depth than I'm used to. So I was able to detect where a lot of my data was coming from which was various sources, but some were helium/Carbon, and also old DL files of CM that were sitting around.
But for the sake of knowing, If I did want to wipe everything through CWM and format, would I choose everything? or just a single option.

well its been a while since i've used CMW, and im on TWRP. but it depends on how far down you want to format. if you want to just do a regular wipe, and reload a new rom then the usual wipe is your /system, /data, /cache, /dalvik, and /boot. im not sure what CWM calls them, but those are the usual partitions. just make sure you have a new rom ready or a backup. if you wanted to reformat even FURTHER than that, you could flash the stock rocovery and do a fac reset. but thats only if you are have major issue across all roms.
OK. Thanks for the response. I'm going to research why so many people tend to prefer twrp now.

i think one of the main factors was that it works with some ROMs OTA functions, especially Viper roms, which are very popular. myself, i just wanted to try it out lol

If u came from a Rom that was on 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 to a Rom that is 4.2.2 then check the /sdcard directory.. not sdcard0. I think its also in data/media. Not sdcard/data/media but striaght data/media. Use a root file manager and if u still have files in there, then delete everything except the 0/ folder. Happened to me a couple times and I freed up around 2-4 gb everytime

I looked into that and saw what you were referring to. My only concern is that data/media is where my stock.zip recovery is saved. I'm not sure if I'm quite ready to remove that from my device yet. Also, do I need any of the CWM stuff found in data/media still? I am not referring to data/media/0.

Update: I'm glad I checked. I performed a backup of my current rom and CWM placed it in /data/media/clockworkmod. So this is an active directory that CWM is using for my backups. So I don't believe I'll be deleting the /data/media/clockworkmod directory. But will then anything else be impacted if deleted?

Oh if you still have your backups there then dont delete that cwm folder.. but try and delete anything else that seems useless. What Rom are you on now?

Alright I'm pretty sure its the data/media/android folder that has a pretty good chunk of memory. Try and delete that. It wont mess up your current setup because your android folder is on the sdcard 0

Also if you took pictures, downloaded stuff, or have music when you were on stock, then dont touch folders like dcim, download, music, pictures, ect. I personally move all my files when I switch between 4.1 to 4.2 fro. Sdcard to sdcard0. If you want to do that use a computer to make sure it transfered right because I used es filemanager once and it said it transfered but instead all of it was lost. I think someone made a .zip file that could transfer everything but I can't remember

Sounds good. In regards to the pictures. I believe you posted about that somewhere else before, or someone else did. I saw the issues. I use dropbox and don't have any music on my device other than google music cache. So I cleared a lot of that stuff up. thanks for your help.

For real though what's going on. Whether I use ES file explorer or root explorer, Even TWRP's built in file manager. The first two mentioned will delete the file and say "File Successfully Deleted" and the Storage for Internal/External (which ever it's located in) Reflects the correct change as if it was actually deleted. Yet once you back out of the folder the storage changes right back and I go back in the folder and the file is back...
Another example is moving files,
Just a few minutes ago I downloaded the Latest BeanStalk. I proceeded to move it to my External SD Card. And I deleted several files as well(Several Movies and a Nandroid), I then reboot to TWRP. I get ready to do a backup and notice that the damn storage sizes are back to the same sizes they were before I downloaded the ROM and deleted files. And the ROM is gone, not on Internal where it was downloaded to and moved from. Nor in the External Storage in the folder I moved it to.
Doesn't matter if I delete 17kb or 25GB the storage goes right back to what it was. And what ever files are there no matter if I delete/move/alter. It all goes back to identically the same...
Another odd thing, I made a Nandroid to my internal SD and once I booted back into the system it was gone. Even though it said backup successful. And before rebooting I checked the restore tab and the backup was there
What in the hell could cause that?

Did you update ES File Manager? One of the updates turned on the recycle bin by default, so a bunch of stuff, and space, started appearing (stuff I'd deleted) and depleting (space) until I deselected that option from settings.
Worth a shot.

Unfortunately I checked and that option is not enabled on ES file explorer.

Well that sucks.
Might be time for a full wipe and restoration of your rom of choice.
I'm unclear if killing the internal USB storage is a good idea, but at least the default wipe in recovery (system, data, dalvik) makes sense, though you may end up having to do everything.

Everytime that I switch ROM's( with the exception to when I am upgrading a build number from the same ROM) I always go to Advanced and check Cache, System, Dalvik Cache .... I then proceed to back up one menu and swipe the "Factory Reset" Wipe option built into TWRP.
I can't even make Nandroids at this point, they just Disappear after I Reboot. So I went side door on this pesky little bastard. And brought in my OTG and 64GB Thumb Drive. And these Nandroids are sticking. Although the current ROM I am running atm (BeanStalk) isn't recognizing OTG inputs. As it's built off of CyanogenMod, and this is one of the known bugs ATM.
Anywasy One of the Kind fellows on the International N3 forum notified me of a certain Build.prop edit that may tackle this issue. So off I go

OK, this sounds bloody awful.
I am way unfamiliar with AOSP roms (I have clean rom on my Nexus 7 2013, however, so I get the simplicity of it), just isn't my cup of tea for this phone.
I am wondering if you switching between the 2 platforms hasn't caused some issues. I've wondered this before with other major issues, different from this but similar movement (AOSP to TouchWiz KitKat and back).
I'd like to see some definitive input on properly moving from one to the other.

I've found the culprit and its Permissions. Going to the AOSP ROM which was a KitKat ROM set the Permissions on my SD Card to read only. And I don't have the "authority" to change the permissions back.
I've tried editing the platform.xml to no avail. It's starting to get pretty damn frustrating. Even now when I go back to 4.3 ROM's following a clean wipe(dalvik, system, cache... Then factory reset) my permissions remain the same.
I have been having the same problem. I decided to order a new sd card and change my buildprop using ROM Toolbox Pro. I modiified "ro.securestorage.support" from "true" to "false". I will be receiving my new card either today or tommorow. I have had some bad luck with SanDisk and I am going to try lexar. I'm really considering reformatting back to the tried and true FAT32.

I was having similar issues for awhile, not sure if this is what fixed it or if it was something I did unintentionally but here's what I think may have worked: flashed my modem with MI3 once without auto reset on odin and then again with it then I changed my permissions on my external storage with root file explorer, i went into system/etc/permissions/platform.xml and added <group gid="media_rw" /> under the write_external_storage. I wasn't sure if that was the issue so for good measure I used triangle away and reset the flash counter, id been flashing a lot so I thought maybe that had something to do with it. idk. anyways, I haven't had the problem since. aside from APNs, still cant get custom apns to stick for some reason.
