Screen protectors...talk to me. - Xperia Tablet Z Accessories

What's the consensus on which is best?

Please let me know as well.
What I'm looking for:
- Anti glare
- Oleophobic coating
- touchscreen responsiveness
- high transparency
If possible I'd like to see some before and after shots as well
Here is a first before-photo with the pre-applied screen protector still in place http://mtb43.tweakdsl.nl/IMAG0142.jpg

The best i have found and love it
Try illumisheild store.com
I paid 25 dollars for the sony one and threw it the garbage it was thick and wouldn't place correctly.
This was super thin and transparent and easy to apply.

I've just ordered the atfolix ultra clear, will let you know

I have the xoskins cover on mine and like it. Saved my galaxy's screen so I went with it.

Sorry for the delay. It doesn't really look like anything but the rear panel is extra shiny/sparkly.

Any feedback on that protector? How is the surface, is it smoother than the original film? Sensitivity for fingerprints?
Thanks!

Well I tried to apply the dry application atfolix protector and lets just say I failed badly! There is just NO way even in a wet bathroom that I can apply one so large and not get crap between the screen and protector.
So I'm running no protector.
When the wet apply XO Skin is avaliable in the UK I'll try that.

Ultra Clear is the best. Anti-glare will make your screen too smoky.

Maybe not but how do you go about replacing the one Sony has on there? I also have a 3 year old that it's his "my pad" so even though it doesn't leave the house it could use all the protection it can get :silly:
To answer other questions, the XO skin is pretty good with fingerprints and isn't too soft where swiping is annoying. It is smooth but I wound up with a couple of rough spots but they don't bother me any or stand out much. It is a wet application and maybe more challenging to apply, especially at this size but it came out nice and im happy with it.

So there actually is a screen protector on the device out of the box? I saw a thin coat that did not reach to the border of the frame.
I thought it was just the way the glass was cut for the screen... So that is a screen protector? Is it even removable?

Well I got the XOskin wet apply protector and fail!
All the videos show that you can move it around whilst wet to align it properly, not true! I guess it's due to the plastic shatter thing Sony apply, but as soon as I placed it on the screen bam no movement.
Due to this constant up down up down to get the damn thing aligned, I have dust galore under the protector (yes I did do it in the bathroom with the shower on).
So off it comes.
Man I've spend around £40 on screen protectors and not one has gone on correctly. So no more!

Scratch on the screen

I've got 2 scratches on the screen one of about 2 cm and a smaller one of about 8 mm.
Is it possible to get just the screen replaced ? I don't want to have too much trouble replacing it as I've kind of get used to it, but it doesn't look pretty.
Had BTW a dream last night that the screen got shattered - fortunately I woke up and look at it and thought PHEW
EDIT: Whoops - this should have been in Q&A ...
Did you take the factory screen protector out ? If no then every X10 comes with a screen protector already applied. You can check the edges you will notice it.
Damn.. I did not know there was such a thing
Thanks for telling me - but how do you remove it ?

Grow your finger nails or ask some with BIG fingernails. A knife will do it but may damage the fake chrome in the side. Be careful.

Just put a new one after removing the old one.. it becomes moisture sensitive without it.
In my X10 box, there were tree of this protectors. So you can replace without buying a new one.

Mineral glass, crystal glass... same thing different name.
Mineral glass is ordinary tempered glass made from silica. It is more scratch resistant than Plexiglass which is a plastic also used for watch crystals.
The most scratch resistant crystals are usually mineral glass coated with synthetic Sapphire.

easy to scratch screen

I am not happy with my new Xperia S or Sony's attitude. I only had the phone a week and the screen has many fine scratches. I am extremely careful with my phones - my original Desire's screen is unmatied. With the Sony statement forth Xperia being scratch resistant I felt I was on safe ground - after all I'd come back to Sony to rediscover the quality I yearned and always had on previous Sony phones since my Z1 back in '96.
I've treated my Xperia the same as those before it - the most extreme condition being loose in my inner suit pocket with my work BlackBerry. And this is exactly what has covered it in scratches - the pitch of the scratches matching that of the cheap plastic keys on the BlackBerry.
And to insult me properly I get the below response from Sony, as if they are sniggering from around the corner.
"Thank you for contacting the Sony Xperia support centre.
We can confirm the handset is scratch resistant, however not scratch proof, it is still possible to scratch the screen of the handset, we apologize for any confusion caused by this."
I though this was Sony trying to get back on a level with the top guys... With gorilla glass everywhere else many (me included) assumed Sony's claim of scratch resistant meant some proprietary equivalent.
One Sony Xperia S for sale. ....... Only loads of minor scratches...
You aren't aware that your Xperia S came screen protector preinstalled? Glass underneath is scratch proof mineral glass.
Mate i believe you scratched the protective screen protector, as it is really easy to get scratched, even with a fingernail you will be able to scratch the screen protector ( minimal scratch ofc )
Remove the screen protector and your scratches will be gone
watch from minute 2:40:
is it really the screen or the screen protector?
The preinstalled plastic is not a screen protector, but for keeping the glass together if the screen cracks so the glass is not going everywhere in the air.
I would say as the ppl above, this is scratched, not the screen
Dont worry. U can take it off and use the actually screen protector that came in the box!

Thanks all for the info. I'd seen talk of removing the protector, but had assumed this was the additional plastic sheet that was in the box and that maybe in some places this is already stuck on.
It is very odd that when I contacted Sony they did not point this out or suggest replacing it.
I assume if I search around the forum will I find plenty of good advice on replacement screen protectors? ie one that don't scratch when you sneeze on them!

If you dont want to see any scratch in your screen, I'd recommend you to search for a 'Matte' screen protector, which I've chosen to be from Steinheil for my past phones: They -are- the best ones offered. A bit expensive though...
They seem a bit blurrier than the crystal clear ones, but I guarantee the 'soft touch feeling', no more oily screens and no scratches makes up to that.
Specially because we have a bright screen with sharp colours so there'll be no problem I guess.
Wait, so there's actually a screen protector on the phone from the factory?
Can I remove it? Any benefits to removing it?
I can barely see it on the glass, almost missed this.

Even gorilla glass can be scratched with keys or against another hard object like another phone, every phone to date is susceptible even your Desire which doesn't come any protection against ware and tare.
It's toughened glass not steel, Sony is exactly right with the screen being scratch resistant, not scratch proof just like any other mobile maker will tell you and just like all other mobiles/tablets currently in circulation.
Seriously don't put your brand new mobile in with your keys, coins, junk etc, wait a few months at least like I do lol.
Completely agree with ErichSan, I hate the oily/smudgey feeling screen protectors also.

He's peeling of the plastic that is there to keep the glass together if it breaks. The preinstalled plastic filter does NOT protect against scratches (it may work a little bit against scratches). If u really want one who protects, the phone came with a screen protector in the box.

Screen Guard Protector

Hi to all.
A stupid question: does it have sense to have a screen film protector on Galaxy S3 or it will just make the touchscrenn less responsiveness?
Personally I always use one, it stops micro scratches, helps resale value, and doesn't affect responsiveness one bit.....go to accessories forum for all you need to know

If you don't use a screen protector your phone will scratch. Grab a zagg and put it on correctly, Ive had mine on for 9 months now I think. Or since the release of the s3 and still not a bubble, lift or scratch.

By the way if all of you advice me to do it, i will put a screen protector on my phone....
The problems in noticed with zagg protectors are the orange peel effect on the surface and lots of lint seemed to get stuck around the edges of the film.
But I would definitely recommended a screen protector. The screen is hard to scratch, but not impossible especially if there is any sand nearby

Everybody must know for their own use, i don't use a protector anymore. The touchpad works much better without one - thats only my opinion! If sometime there will be a scartch, so it is. We all will die...
My old Desire was a year saved by a protector - the last one without. Got no scratches in my jeans pocket...
Doubt you'll lose any responsiveness at all. I have a very cheap protector on. Amazon sells 12 for like £2 and with the GS3 screen being so responsive, it even works fine with my thin gloves on.

It is imposrtant to protect from scratches...
Let's use it!
S3 screen are sensitive. Wearing screen protector will not lose it sensitiveness. If it lose a little bit, u will not notice them. Im using anti-finger glossy screen protector. Kinda hate it coz it make screen not sharpness as it should be.
Although it corning gorilla glass but beware. Sand in pocket can still scratching ur screen.

Problems with screen protector

I bought this 4 pack of screen protectors from Amazon - http://amzn.com/B00CMNZVR0 and had to get rid of it because it caused the touchscreen to not work. I thought I got a defective tablet because I put the protector on as soon as I got it, but once I took it off, it had no issues.
I put up a video here http://youtu.be/ug2hXaemfB8
Anyone else have similar issues with this or other screen protectors?
I had the same problem, I actually though of exchanging my tablet tomorrow for this reason. I removed my screen protector as soon as I saw your video and now touch screen is so much better. Do you think removing the shatter film then place a screen protector will help? Thank you.

Due to the it being too much of a scratch magent, I recently took the plunge and removed the factory Sony applied Anti Shatter Film (ASF) and wow what a difference - the whites, colours etc seem much more natural to me and overall the screen "pops" out at you!!. The ASF is surprisingly thick and I didn't like the idea of a screen protector over the top of the ASF. After removal, I immediately applied an Incipio screen protector which is great - I wish I had done this whole thing sooner!

I put on mine 5 minutes ago, I had an anti glare one before, and boy is this smoother than anything I've ever put on a phone... It has an effective oleophobic coating so you barely see any fingerprint, and touchscreen works fine, no issues at all.
It is actually pretty thick, but I guess it adds no more than 10 grams so I don't really care, I have a basic gel back cover and you can barely see it even if it's considerably smaller than the screen (talking about 1.5mm all around), and even though the holes for sensors and led are REALLY holes, you can literally fill them with water (I'm joking, but I will try and let you know... ).
Only problem with these protectors is you have to get it on on 1 max 2 moves, because replacing it is a real pain in the arse. Because is thicker and heavier and stiffer than any other screen protector, you can't simply put a piece of magic tape on the corner and peel it off, you have to do it with a nail or something like a guitar pick or it doesn't come off. Hence the difficulty if you happen to leave a freaking dust particle under it (usually at the center of the screen, where you see it EVERY SINGLE TIME you take a glance at your device).
Lastly, big bubbles are non existing, instead there are a million of infinitesimal bubbles that go away with hard work with a squeegee, or the producer claims they go away by themselves in the next few days.
Overall, if the bubbles really do go away in the next few days, I'll be really happy with my purchase.
Will keep you posted anyway.
P. S. If you're wondering, yeah, pen and pencils work just fine, I'd say better, since you don't have to worry about the screen (or screen protector) getting scratched...

Quick update: I ditched the glas.t protector and have gone back to a simple anti glare one, branded Nillkin this time.
I hate the foggy effect on whites, but I love having no fingerprints at all, not having to clean it every two seconds, and not having to deal with several points where the micro bubbles never went away.
Furthermore, I found a slice on the glass protector that seems to have the coating worn off (it came that way, I just realised it was there the day after I put it on), and that slice is prone to be the dirtiest on the whole surface.
I tried to wash it with soap, dish soap, alcohol, nothing works.
I took it off and put it on so many times (after the first time there were always one or two micro dust particles that managed to get under there, and you often you only see them in full sunlight) that the lower right corner would bend a little so that it didn't stick as well as before.
Add to that the WEIGHT of the thing (about 45 grams) and the added .4mm (seems nothing, but they're A LOT on a 6.5mm thin device), I eventually took it off and replaced it and will stay with my plain screen protectors for the entire device life.

Yeah after just a few hours I decided to remove the glass protector. It just doesn't stick to the corners and edges properly. And the screen feels a bit unresponsive. I just replaced it with a regular matte protector I have as a backup and it feels so much better. Sigh. I wasted 50 bucks in that glass protector. Sometimes I feel like I made a bad decision getting the XZU having to think of all this protection crap. I never ever needed to put anything on my other devices before and those are still looking fine.

yea i have had to remove mine also, it made fps games unplayable because the glass made the screen unresponsive to multi-touch use it was very annoying. i recommend just sticking with regular screen protectors for this device.

Unless you remove the anti shatter and don't use two layers of screen protectors...
