Please help! New to rooting/custom roms - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright hey guys! I rooted my phone last night and it worked and all that and I got the SuperUser app. But before I go into more detail, I have the Galaxy s3 I737 or whatever it is for at&t. Alright well today I decided that I wanted to put a custom rom on. I downloaded rom manager from the play store and then opened it up and downloaded CM 10.1 build and the GApps for it also. I clicked all of the boxes for it to make a back up and to wipe all that stuff also and then it started loading and all that. After it was done loading, the phone restarted and had the little CM guy on there and it had the CM boot logo thing I guess you would say.? But after that, it said that Setup Wizard has stopped and that the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped.
This is what I'm talking about.
Sorry for the bad quality but I had to use my ipod to take the pictures
So now what am I suppose to do? I just really hope that I didn't screw up my phone! Please help!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Update!! I fixed it! I flashed it back to stock and I just wiped all data and all that stuff and it worked!

This thread has a very good toolkit for rooting your s3. I would suggest flashing twrp recovery over clockwork. Then download the rom you want(make sure its for your phone and carrier). And thwn use twrp to flash your rom and/or google apps.

So I basically just have to like re-root my phone again?

Also, did you flash google apps with the rom? Cm does not normally have google apps included they are a separate zip

I think you can just flash twrp recovery with the tool. I only used it once on my friends phone but i believe it has that option. As long as your phone can get to recovery or download mode its not "done". Thats what i would do in this case. Flash twrp recovery with the tool then download a rom to your pc. Transfer to your phone while your in recovery then wipe and flash(just not internal or external sd like my freind did lol). If cm wont flash try a samsung based rom first so you can make a backup before your flash anything else.

Restore Note to Stock without USB connection?

I went to plug in my phone to my USB cable connected to my desktop, and and I noticed that my Note wasn't being recognized by my desktop, and but was still charging. Long story short, I deducted that it was an issue with the phone's hardware (tried different computers, cables, and ROMs). I have the $10/month warrantee from ATT, but just assumed that I could trust take it in because it was rooted and on a custom ROM. Is there a way for me to flash back to stock and unroot the phone without Odin or any other desktop utility, so that I can take it in?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
I ran through the forums and didn't see a cwm flashable stock rom. So you may be out of luck on that one.
If you do find a stock rom you can flash though, you could potentially use this over wifi adb.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23499670&postcount=133
That'll remove CWM. Best bet might be to say you lost it and pay the $199 deductible. I had to do that once - I'm using the old phone as my mp3 player.
Are we sure this isn't a driver issue? I know its supposed to auto detect but it might he worth trying to install the drivers yourself manually and try again.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
I tired reinstalling the drivers and Kies on two different computers. I read somewhere just now that the issue was most like an issue with one of the wire strip on the USB dock part being messed up.

What about copying the original files onto a microsd from your computer and flashing from that?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Well that leaves me in a pretty bad spot I guess. I suppose my only options are to take it in to the ATT store and hope the guy can exchange it right then and not notice or care, and try to find someone who will sell me a single USB replacement part (looked everywhere though and only saw bulk dealers), and or just continue using it and never switch ROMs I guess

I didn't see a stock rom for him to do that with.
You can use the mobile Odin when you find a stock rom.
You can get a stock backup from someone who has stock rom and CWM and will reset to factory and make a backup and send it to you.
The at&t person won't check to see if you have CWM.

If the OP wants to do that, I'll be willing to get a backup for him. I'm still on the stock Gingerbread system with root/CWM. I'm about to install another rom over the next couple days, so just before hand I can get a backup.

That would be amazing. With that backup, I could just flash it, but and essentially be back to stock? Also, I how does Odin Mobile work? Will that unroot and flash me back to stock or is it just a way to flash like CWM without having to go into recovery?

I'm going to be spending the afternoon/early evening with the wife, so when I get home I'll get a backup for you.
And yes, you'd be back to stock. Make a backup of everything you have first though.
It just downloaded the mobile Odin, and and it said something about my device not being compatible, and that it could take up to 30 to generate some file that might make it compatible. Has anyone else used this on their Note before?

I used it, but I don't remember which phone.
So you will have a nandroid stock backup file soon. To flash that, you need CWM recovery. Do you have that?
I'm creating the backup right now..
I might find a server that can be used for downloading.. that way we at least have a completely stock cwm backup.
Good idea. Maybe Electron or another developer could host it for everyone's availability.
gagejbond, do you have PM's enabled? I'm going to send you a PM in a few with the link for the download. I'm testing the restore on my phone right now..

I just wanted to say THANK YOU! I stumbled across this thread, became intrigued by the idea a cwm flashable stock backup might get posted (would like to have one again after i accidentally deleted mine), but really stayed and read the whole thread because it was so great to watch you/gage/the rest of the thread interact and ACTUALLY help one another on this forum! No flaming, no bashing/bickering etc. Doesn't seem to happen enough in my opinion. Great work again people.

I installed the .img using the other method. I was able to get into recovery and I was trying to run a backup with compression. It said creating archive 1 out of 2, the phone got extremely hot and then shut off. Scared the living crap out of me but I believe it was just because the battery died (even though it said I started the backup with over 50%, I couldn't turn my phone back on until I plugged it in). Now my phone won't boot properly, it gets frozen during boot.
Works great! Thank you!
(Of course, I wiped out /system stupidly while testing it but oh well...)
I confirm this works like a charm. Thanks!

[Q] Need help with device after recovery flash

I got the Verizon HTC One Max today... Successfully got bootloader unlock, root, and S-OFF (thanks to rumrunner!).
Found CWM Touch/Non-Touch recovery as well as TWRP. Tried flashing both via fastboot and neither would actually load when telling device to boot into recovery. Tried installing TWRP via GooManager, no go. Tried installing CWM via ROM Manager, no go. Recovery not found for either is what I was pretty much running in to.
Decided to try flashing recovery for Verizon HTC One (via ROM Manager), it says it worked, but still would not boot into recovery. Ever since then, though, I cannot get service and device will be on for a minute or two and then reset.
Manually flashed TWRP and CWM and now it seems to boot into recovery (with either), but still no service and still resetting every minute or two.
Cannot find RUU for this device, nor can I find radio to flash or stock recovery.
Help me! I want my phablet back! lol

Where did you "find" cwm and twrp? Different versions from other forums 'sometimes' contain other partitions with them.
Should only use:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-max/orig-development
Recoveries are made from a device specific kernel. The One kernel is very similar to the Max but not exact. There is work being done to get usable pieces of a decrypted Verizon Max ruu. Not sure what you can do until available.

Dont go without. You have custom Max recovery installed now and we have the files for someone in here to create you some flashable zips of stock kernel and stock recovery to try. Decrypted ruu pieces are needed when you cant flash with custom recovery.
Just ask in General for someone to create flashable zips.

Yes sir. Bootloader unlocked and S-OFF. Booting into Android is not an option, so I'm wondering how I go about flashing these files provided to me being in .bin format? Can I flash them using fastboot? Or can I rename .bin to .img?

Fastboot flash boot (bootfilename)
Just replace the (bootfilename) part with the file name you are using
Example
Fastboot flash boot g6f789c8.img
Edit- also I checked and found that drop box must have added the .bin extension. The flashify app leaves them without extension because it assumes they are .IMG files. Therefore, they can simply be renamed to .IMG. Didn't notice that in the hurry to post.

Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
What you need to do is fastboot the stock recovery, you shouldn't need the stock boot.img unless you tried to flash someone else's kernel for a different device... Anyways yeah you need to fastboot the stock recovery by rebooting in to bootloader and typing "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" given the stock recovery is "recovery.img" which it should be.. Once stock recovery is installed boot in to the stock recovery any way you can possibly get to it and do a full factory data reset.. This will wipe the entire phone as well as reset the Verizon radio/baseband and theoretically you should be able to boot right back up and cell and data connection should resume as normal! Good luck and PM me if you need any further help and I'll give you my gmail/hangouts so you can hit me up directly right there..

[Q] Sprint Galaxy Note 3 rooted, unable to tether.

Hello all,
I will confess that I am an absolute noob. I have had my Sprint Galaxy Note 3 since November last year. I finally decided to go ahead and root my phone so that I could use the tether feature. I also like the idea of having control of my own device. I have been reading and reading, and reading on the forum and referencing information from a copy of the Android Hacker's Toolkit by Mr. Jason Tyler and Will Verduzco.. and I'm confused. The information is great however the vast majority of it is over my head.
I have used Chainfire's method for rooting my phone and have installed TWRP for the recovery, and have made a back-up. I have tried installing and using WiFi Tether by TopAppLoft and several other applications from Google Play. I am unable to get the wireless router to work.
What could I try in order to be able to use the WiFi router without having to pay the extra $ to Sprint?
Thank you in advance for any information anyone can provide

Thank you sir! I took a peek and the Odexed Blue ROM looks like a pretty cool ROM. Once I flash the ROM if I want to go back to what I originally had I can just use the Reboot Recovery command through Goomanager? I honestly only used goomanager a few times and never made a backup with it. I use twrp for backups and flashing as I believe most others in this forum do as well. I would consider making a backup through recovery unless someone can tell you otherwise. All the roms should have the 4 in 1 power menu and you can access recovery through there. The two easiest ways to go back if you were unhappy with a rom would be to restore a backup through recovery or Odin back to stock. However I think you will be very happy with strongsteve and his odex blue rom. I have used his rom since he released it and it really is flawless and very appealing to the eye. Good luck. Let us know if you need help.

I selected Bonsai_BETA_v0.0.5 - 01.14.2014 as my new ROM to flash as it lists the native hotspot mod as one of the things it has included. I was unable to figure out how to install OdexBlue through Odin version 1.85 (this was Chainfire's autoroot application) and I was unable to locate OdexBlue through Goomanager. I made sure to do a nandroid back up and did a complete wipe as I installed Bonsai through Goomanager. I successfully flashed it however I do not know how to get the Native Hotspot feature to work without it telling me to "Call Sprint Customer Service" to activate it. Not sure what I should try at this point. Perhaps try another ROM or seek out the Native Hotspot mod from Mr. Micmars?
If you want odex blue download it from the rom thread to your PC then put it on your sd card. For some reason my phone will not download the odex blue roms. No need to use goomanager to download roms, you will find the download link in the original post where you find the rom description. Once it is on your sd card reboot to recovery, make a backup in recovery, wipe system, data, cache, and dalvic cache. Now from the main menu of recovery go to install, find the rom and install it. Reboot and it should work fine. These are the basic instructions for most roms but always read the developers instructions as some are slightly different. I'm guessing you may not have wiped system, data, and cache which may not allow you to use the hotspot mod. Report back with your results.

IT WORKS LIKE A CHAMP!!! I downloaded odexblue and moved it over into the goo manager download directory. I then did a wipe and I installed it through goomanager. I'm connected now through my hot spot as I type to you. Thanks again for your guidance and patience with this noob!!
Glad it worked.

[Q] Can't restore backups and other issues

What's up guys, I'm running into an unusual issue here and could really use some guidance. I tried searching around, and the only solution I KNOW will work is to start from scratch, using odin to go back to stock, re-rooting, and then slowly trying to work my way back to where I was before the FUBAR.
So, I was recently using LiquidSmooth 2.9 and went to make the leap to 3.0. Flashed everything, got confirmation that it went through ok, and then I just got stuck at the Samsung Galaxy s4 screen, nothing happens after that. So, I went to restore from the backup that I took earlier and I got a failure to restore.
Not to worry, I figured, I'll just reinstall from the zips for 2.9 that I still had on my SD card. Well, I do that and everything seems to work fine with the flash, but now I'm STILL stuck at the Samsung Galaxy S4 boot screen and STILL, nothing happens after that.
Any suggestions on what to do here? Flash a new kernel? Am I stuck going the long route and having to Odin everything back to stock and then re-root, etc?.

Id download the latest liquid file again just in case that file was corrupt somehow.
That's usually been the problem lately from what I've been seeing. You really shouldn't have to Odin.
Also the kernel shouldn't matter but I always flash kts latest kernel with liquid but others don't and have no issues.
Grab that file again
Do a couple wipes in recovery
Flash away

Well I've seen others either upgrading their twrp or going with some version of CWM but that's obviously up to you. I'd try to download the latest liquid, which is a unified build, and try it again first..
