[Q] Lost Root, now what should I do? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I am new to the whole rooting process But I rooted my s4 and it seemed like it rooted fine but then I lost the root after restarting .After backtracking I found out that I didn't update the binaries on Super SU and if I try to do it now it says installation failed. When I reboot the phone the Android with the unlock comes up, but when I run root checker it says not rooted. Should I just start the root steps all over again from the beginning( can I even do that without bricking the phone) or is there a certain part of the process I should continue from safely? Thx in advance guys!

Thread I used
I used:bhp090808's all in one tool to root by the way if that helps anyone figure out what I should do. The thread for it is :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301720

You can try and root again. If it failes you would need to restore to stock and start over.

So you think I should re-try from the very beginning of the process?

Yes. If it fails then you will need to restore the software and start over. PM me if that happens for information.

Got it thx!!

It worked, thx for the help! Love the profile pic by the way (I used to have that as a poster on my wall . Thanks again!

Lost root, as well
I had a similar case of mysteriously loosing root access and didn't want to post a new thread, since this one was here. I'm running a custom ROM though (Eclipse), so if I use the all-in-one root method I originally used to root the phone, will I get any problems?

Accidently gave the ok on the OTA! HELP!!

I did a quick battery pull and now whenever I turn the phone on, it keeps trying to update. SOOOO, is there a way to stop this or take it off through PC with ODIN????
I'm not ready to lose root yet....
Anybody have any ideas? Can I flash a custom rom through ODIN?

You sure you didn't brick your device? I was under the impression doing battery pulls during the update process would mess up your phone.
Someone posted something similar yesterday. Another person suggested pulling the sim card out and then rooting the phone as usual.
Edit: you already have root?

Yes, I already have root. The phone is currently next to me with the battery out.
First off, I'm no expert here. I'm hesitant to offer any advise. Are you able to boot directly to recovery?

Luckily no, but this is very frustrating. It hasn't fully loaded yet. Trying to figure out if there is a to do a factory reset and have go it go back to what it was in the box.
I would've responded sooner but since I'm a new member.... 5 minute interval responses.

I tried that. It keeps trying to do that damn update.
I've never taken an OTA on a Samsung device. In my experience there is a prompt that verifies you want to install after the download. IF it's the same here, I would THINK your safe to Odin.
If you can get to recovery, throw a ROM on your SD card and flash.

By "loading" do you mean downloading? Or is actually installing?
Dr. Cornelius asks you to calm down.
you have to poke a accept after it downloads
then it boots to download mode
if you like
you can revert stock to MDK wipes everything
http://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=237
flash to complete stock and re-root ??
Not sure how far out of the way you would like to go..
I downloaded the OTA and let it site on the stock MDK phone for over a day before I rooted and installed ota root keeper to test to see if I can restore root..with out bricking
I could of easily delete the fota cache where it downloaded to and frozen the propitiate file to stop the update

no custom roms thru odin.
---------- Post added at 07:35 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:33 AM ----------
get into recovery and just flash a custom rom.
If you have titanium backup, use it to freeze SDM 1.0 and FWUpdate. This will keep the new software from downloading and keep the software update notification from appearing (provided it hasn't been installed by now).

best idea has been said, get that thing into custom recovery where the OTA cant install. try beating the phone as it tries to install and get it into download mode and see if u can flash a custom recovery though ODIN
What you can do at this point depends a lot on what has already been updated on your phone.
If the bootloader is already updated, then there's no way for you to load the older kernel onto it to get it ready to root.
What I'd suggest you do is to go ahead at try the rooting process.
Boot the phone into download mode and try to push the MD2 kernel onto it,
If the install tries to restart, it'll fail since you don't have the expected software, which hopefully will give you a usable system.
Then use motochopper to try to get "su" access.
If ODIN refuses to flash the MD2 software, it's probably the case that you've already gone past the point of no return (i.e. you've got the updated, locked bootloader) and you might as well let the update finish.
If you succeed, then install MDK and Voodoo OTA Keeper and cross your fingers.
Good luck!

Need help so lost try to make it as short as possible.
Phone Info:
- Samsung Galaxy S4 Verizon
- Model SCH-I545
- Build JSS15J.I545VRUEMK2
- Android 4.3
Ok, I tried Rooting my Phone and I use the Soft Root that was linked by someone on the forums. Gave me SuperUser Icon and used a app that checks to see if its Rooted and said it was. Now tried using some Root app's like GameCih and it tells me I need Root Admin or Root Privileges, something to that nature, and cant use the app. Iv been trying to remove that Soft Root but cant Figure it out. Used Odin3 and redid that .tar file for my Build. All when good and got everything the same as a fresh phone, but booting up still has the Pad Lock Icon and Custom logo on it and SuperU Icon. So I cant seem to unroot it, Tried to use the I545ALL-IN-ONE-TOOL posted on these forums but cant get it to working.
So what I need so to get this unrooted and back to factory default, and Rooted the right way, with I545ALL-IN-ONE-TOOL??. Please Help

That is what I used is the Saferoot, wasnt sure of the name, but just looked it up and thats what i have on my pc. Also I dont know how to flash it.. do I use the same Odin3 program for that? or is there another method.(Also is the Full wipe a different tar file?)
Edit: Ok I got it Flashed and back to stock now is there anything other then SafeRoot? that did not work the first time I tried it.

There are a few other methods...but I don't know them...I do know the other methods safety and security was questionable... Hence saferoot was made by trusted devs here...it should work...all the posts I have seen said they got successful root...did you open the supersu app that was installed and allow it to update binaries?... That is a very important step...if you did then make sure if you try this method again you follow each step it tells you...I don't know exactly how the process goes as I'm on4.2.2 and have to use the all in one tool for root...good luck...if it doesn't work hopefully someone who can help will chime in

Nope, I have no idea what these applications do, but a quick search on the forums basically leads to the conclusion that they're not ready for 4.3.
Given the build you're running, you're stuck with SELinux Enforcing since you can't replace the kernel. You'll need to find something else to do whatever you're trying to do.

[HOW TO] Disable OTA Update (G-Note 3) Notifications!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The user lordazoroth originally posted this method here in the T-Mobile SGSIII forum. However, I have confirmed that it works with the Note 3 (at least with the Verizon variant) with one small difference. Feel free to give us both a "THANKS" if this helped you out.
You can disable the OTA Update notification by following the steps below. Just be aware that there is a small change in STEP #3.
Solution:
Step 1. Delete the update located in /cache/fota/ (may be /data/fota) and then click the update notification prompt to install it, it will instantly fail and the notification will disappear. (My phone rebooted and tried to install the update - this is the point where my Note 3 gave the update failed notification. I just rebooted the phone and went to STEP #2.)
Step 2. Disable otacerts.zip located in /etc/security by renaming it to otacerts.zip.bak
Step 3. Disable FotaClient.apk and FWUpgrade.apk by renaming with .bak extensions located in /system/app/
Step 4. Reboot
(NOTE: The difference in STEP #3 for the Galaxy Note 3 is that the [FotaClient.apk] is named [LocalFotaClient.apk] instead of just [FotaClient.apk]. All of the other steps are the same.
Continue running JB 4.3 and enjoy your Note 3 without that nagging update notification!
But the kitkat update is awesome... so you might want to reconsider doing this

Wouldn't just freezing the "SDM" app do the trick? And possibly "FWUpgrade", although i heard that just SDM works

I personally use ROM Toolbox to do it
I got the annoying OTA update today... I DON'T WANT TO UPDATE!!! Why can't they give us an option instead of forcing it down our throats?
Is there any way to disable the update WITHOUT ROOTING? I read everywhere you need ROOT ACCESS to delete the SDM.apk FILE and such. I can't delete it without root.
How can I get rid of the annoying update WITHOUT ROOTING or what is the easiest way to gain root without wiping out everything and starting over?
As of this morning...Verizon seems to be trying to "ram the update" onto your note 3
I was rooted and safestrapped on MJE and when I unplugged my phone from the charger this morning...I had a notice that the update failed to install.
I had previously downloaded, but removed the download.

No way of knowing how far it got. If it was able to get the bootloader nailed in...yes. Screwed. Welcome to kk. If not, whatever you do will wipe at this point.
Safest bet to try and see if you can retain jb is with odin...if it lets you. If it does, great. If it doesn't, you still need odin because you just interrupted a firmware update and probably just soft bricked your phone. So you'll need odin to put kk on your phone.
--
If niether of these things look good, they aren't. So try this first. Try booting to recovery. If you can, it's possible you just saved yourself from learning to use odin. Do a factory reset and reboot. See if it boots to jb. If it does, root asap. If not (it just hangs forever or loops), you're bricked. Try to odin jb. If it keeps failing, you're stuck with kk and you need to odin kk.
If you can't get to recovery and just hangs or loops, odin jb or kk. Whichever it lets you.
If it doesn't let you boot to recovery because it continues to upgrade, at this point let it. This is the ONLY possible scenario that you will keep anything.
Mind you, everything I just covered will never touch any files on external sd memory.
This is a lot to process. So take your time. Good luck!

GRRR it installed Kitkat successfully. I'm SO MAD.. I should have set the annoying OTA notification for a different time so that it wouldn't constantly pop up every second... I would have been home free rooted on Jellybean if it weren't for the STUPID UPDATE.
So can I still DOWNGRADE to Jellybean and be rooted? or did Verizon LOCK or restrict stuff with the update? Can I go back to Jellybean keeping all my files?

I read that too... I can't believe one simple tap mistake ruined my whole first time rooting adventure... Using KINGO was so easy and right when I WAS ABOUT TO DELETE THE STUPID SDM file in the system folder, the update popup came up and accidentally hit the UPDATE And it just rebooted instantly!! I hate how they don't even allow you to cancel or anything... like totally forcing it in your face!!
I still have SuperSU but no longer functions it says "There isn o SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem! If you just upgraded to Android 4.3, you need to manually re-root - consult the relevant forums for your device!"
So there's no way to have root access now?? I can't flash back to Jellybean??? Verizon/Samsung really screwed us here. There must be a way to have root access in Jellybean... I don't care for custom roms... I just want root access!!

I'm at least glad FoxFi fixed a way to still work with KitKat... if they didn't, I'd be really pissed to have no hotspot and stuck with KitKat... screw you VERIZON.

As it has been warned now many, many, many times.... There is NO GOING BACK if you take the NC4 update. Also, as of now, there also NO root method for it. You're stuck on it.

So it would be pointless for me to try to use Odin to flash back to stock Jellybean and then KINGO? It won't even flash back?
I did successfully root before OTA installed Kitkat on mine... does that make any difference?

Unfortunately no. Once you have nc4 loaded you cannot go backwards.

[Q] Device rooted, but can't use SuperSU or root apps anymore

I rooted my Sprint LG G3 a couple weeks ago, and everything was fine. I was able to use Titanium Backup and a few other apps that need root access. Now when I try to use Rec., a screen recording app that needs root access, it says it doesn't have it.
StumpRoot shows it as rooted. SuperSU says it can't find an su binary and can't install one.
What can I do to fix it?

Root checker says I don't have proper root access.
Did an automatic software update mess up my root maybe?

No. I rooted it with StumpRoot and went about my business, using a couple different apps that needed root access.

If you still have recovery, you should be able to just flash a rom.
If you don't, read the FAQ. When you unroot, you'll need to start from scratch. Stump is our only root and it only works the first time. Or when it's clean.
I never installed a custom recovery like TWRP OR the one that starts with C... I just have the stock room recovery and I don't see an option to flash a rom. What can I do here?....

I would suggest following instructions on downgrading to ZV4 (since stump root works for force brute in order to root your phone).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/spr...g-g3-ls990-t2852042/post54912191#post54912191
Once you fully restore back to default stock, you will need to go ahead and install stump root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/orig-development/root-stump-root-lg-g3-sprint-verizon-t2850906
It will allow you to brute force root, which should take about 5 minutes.
After you reboot, you should have root. Go to the market and download supersu. From there you should be able to have root access. From there you need to download TWRP (my choice of recovery) http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/orig-development/recovery-twrp-touch-recovery-2-8-2-0-t2966129
Once that's done, you should be able to reinstall you ROM and profit.
This is all from SCRATCH as you suggested.

@Jschurter
I feel you might need to fix permissions or try flashing su in recovery.

thanks for that instruction. I just ended up using the PC method with odin and flashed root using LG_Root_Script_by_avicohh. It worked perfectly and got me back to root. But thanks anyway!
I rooted my Samsung galaxy grand duos...it got rooted as well but super su is not working...what to do?

Galaxy Alpha AT&T G850A Rooted!

I know this is not the best way to do so but I successfully got my G850A AT&T variant rooted using Kingroot 4.8.0.
Also when I boot up the phone, the lock icon turned into an open lock icon with the text "custom." Does that mean my bootloader has been unlocked?
I would like to install custom ROMs but had no luck installing twrp. Any ideas? I can try anything since this is a dead phone to me anyway.
If it is true, try SLTECAN twrp

That didn't work out. "SECURE DOWNLOAD" is enabled in download mode and when I try to flash the recovery it tells me "check fail: recovery." I guess the bootloader is still locked. Is there any way I could still install a custom ROM? Root is working fine.

There's no recovery image for it. The SLTECAN is only flashable via Odin which is not possible with the G850A.
Although I think we could get custom ROMs using Flash Fire if someone can port the ROMs to 850A. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com//at...tmas-heres-t3516196/post70011921#post70011921
You can create .img from tar or .tar from .img
Open tar.md5 with 7zip, extract .img to phone and use flashify, tell us if worked
Everyone thumbs up the post

Flashing 850W TWRP soft-bricks the device with the message "System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been on the device ..." blah blah blah. I think a Safestrap recovery is better suited for this phone.

Can you give us a tutorial guide on how to do it. Most of us (including me) have tried the version of king root that your using and it fails to root.
However, you have given us stuck with the AT&T variant of this phone a little bit of hope, as you confirmed it can be rooted.

http://forum.xda-developers.com//at...tmas-heres-t3516196/post70011921#post70011921 I used this guide, with Kingroot 4.8.0 instead of Kingroot 4.8.1 but I don't think it matters. The guide did say that you should keep trying until you get it to root. I got root successfully first try, twice, however.

I got the same thing. I've heard AOSP ROMs are not going to work because of the locked bootloader. And TouchWiz ROMs will work if you port in an AT&T boot image making it "authorized."

And there's an S5 version of Safestrap but it only works with a Kitkat kernel. It might work with the Alpha since they have basically the same specs. I might try it in the future.
Does the Kingroot version matter? I tried this with Kingroot 5.0.0 instead of 4.8.0, and while it seems to initially fail, it actually does work. Verified with Root Checker and Kingroot itself was able to give root access to apps. However, it appears to cause certain apps like Camera (Samsung's) and S Health to fail. Uninstalled Kingroot and everything was working again (albeit unrooted).

You have to use 4.81 because later versions do not allow you to remove it and replace it with SuperSU.
OMG
IT ACTUALLY WORKED! I tried it twice and on the second time it worked. I am so happy! Now to find a custom rom for it!
I reverted to KitKat and rooted it so that I could use Xposed lol

My AT&T Galaxy Alpha is running KitKat right now. I'll post the firmware as soon as I can (probably somewhere around 12:00PM Eastern) tomorrow up to mega.nz for all to use
Edit: Firmware now up: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-alpha/general/samsung-galaxy-alpha-att-sm-g850a-t3535938
Mine lost root access after a couple of days.
