I'm using this app for some months now and it's great! Very simple to prevent apps you don't use often running in the background and/or draining your battery!
But i don't recommend hibernating every app, just those you don't want running in the background when your screen is off. Hibernating any app on your phone will definately affect your phone's multitasking ability/performance and also prevent (for example) instant messengers to work correctly. The integrated app analyser does a good job in suggesting you apps to hibernate. I also recommend using Wakelock Detector to find apps waking up your phone and then hibernate them in case they're less important to you.

[Q] Background launched/Running Apps

Hello,
Searched in this forum but couldn't find answer, so thanks for your expert feedback:
I'm using SGS2 since 2 weeks now and I'm happy with it. Except I can't stand one full day with a fully charged battery with a "normal" usage. But batterie matter is not my question
I installed some application, like news, games, etc, as well as "advanced task killer". When I open "Avanced Task Killer", I see so many apps that I didn not even opened: Gallery, Search, Maps, MI, Social Hub, and some games...
Do you know why such applications are running (or launched) itself? Checking RAM, still have enough free ram, but I really don't know why all those apps are lauched.
Doesn't matter, they are not what is causing your drain. If it's really bad it's either the wifi sharing issue or the router issue. Could you post a screen shot of your battery usage. Also atk does more harm than good for the average user.

Well, most of battery usage is due to display+Android OS+Android system (a total of 78%). But battery drain was not my question
Just wandering to know why I have so many apps running (or only launched) in background without I launch them (social hub, maps, gallery, game hub, and some games)
Because the galaxy s II has a massif RAM, once they are running there is no reason to kill them. If you check active services most of them should be cached and not actually running. Atleast the games, stuff like social hub will run always.

These apps are running because that is how the android OS works. It opens things so they load faster next time. They ate supposed to be suspended so not using any resources in the background unless its a badly coded app.
Nothing you can do about it really.

[APP]"Greenify" your battery

I already posted about this in the NRG ROM because that's the ROM I'm using, but I am so impressed with the battery improvement after using this app for a week that I had to cross post to a larger audience. I know the battery is the one major drawback on the Amaze. This is just not a problem for me anymore since I started using Greenify.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify
I've been getting over 24 hours regularly with 3-4 hours screen time. I'm using NRG with stock kernel, but I see no reason why this app wouldn't offer improvement for any configuration. It enables effective hibernation of apps without freezing them. They'll run but only in the foreground. It cuts out all background processes of the apps you select.
You have total control over which apps you want running in the background and allows you to keep the aggressive battery hogs at bay. You select which apps should hibernate. For instance, now Google maps will really stay asleep when it's not being used, no constant wake locks, but unlike with freezing it, you can conveniently launch it when needed. However any apps with background processes that are actually useful are free to do their thing, eg, widgets you want to auto update. It's taming the beast that is android.
And not only is my battery improved, but my phone is more responsive too. Highly recommended. Here's the xda thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155737
thanks a lot for sharing this, will try it out, always wanted an app like this, the maps kill the battery for no good reason.
My pleasure. I hope your experience is as satisfying mine.
dosnt kill maps most apps remain in idle, pending hibernation mode.
EDIT, opened my eyes and read the FAQ. - maps not gonna die :|
Q: Some of my greenified apps (e.g. Google Maps) seems not hibernating.
A: In short, don't worry about frequently awake apps. It will still hibernate in minutes after screen goes off, thus hardly add observable battery consumption. Use battery statistics in settings or "BetterBatteryStats" to confirm that.
While most greenified apps will stay in hibernation quietly, some apps do break hibernation, due to being waken up by others. Some known cases include enabled account sync, backup agent, and explicit launch by other app.
Since version 1.45, Greenify will now automatically turn off directly involved account sync of greenified apps when going to hibernate, to avoid the periodic account sync wake them up. For backup agents, Greenify will NOT disable them, to ensure your backup of app data is always up-to-date. As backup usually does not perform often, they are thus unlikely to be waken up often.
Google Maps is a typical example of explicit launch by other app. Some Google apps, including Google Now (a.k.a Google Search), will start the NetworkLocationProvider of Google Maps for its proprietary implementation instead of the public Android one if Google Maps is installed.
Since Greenify is designed to not break any explicit usage of greenified apps, these behaviors are considered "normal", and will NOT be "fixed". To clear out your unease, Greenify will still put them into hibernation when standby to protect your battery consumption.

You can manually put them into hibernation mode by selecting them, and hitting the pause button at the top of the screen. To help control maps make sure you don't have Google Now running or have it on in a very limited mode. (Google Now sucker punches battery. Honestly, I just presume that anyone interested in battery preservation has abandoned Google Now.) The other anti-maps tactic I use is to go to System Settings>>Location and disable "GPS satellites" and "Location & Google search." I can easily re-enable these through a widget I have set up when I need Maps capability, but it keeps the program quiet for the most part and Greenify does the rest.
The proof is in the screenshots. I never got any battery life like this before Greenify.

but in those pics i also see juice defender running, so that may be playing a part too. also there are no phone calls, phone calls take a lot of juice.
regarless of that i have witnessed significant battery improvement with this app, i think i'll be giving a donation to this guy. he deserves it.

I've had Juice Defender going as long as I've had my phone. I use the customization in ultimate, but before Greenify, I was getting around 17 hours battery life. So JD has not been a variable for me in evaluating the app.
I'm not a big phone call maker, but I do use bluetooth for music streaming a lot. I think it was so minor in comparison to the screen usage that day that it probably didn't even register 1% battery usage.
So I'm giving it a try. This a pretty much a light app that kills the app you select when you aren't using it.

Trying this out now but just thought I'd pass along some info that really helped me with maps. Using Autorun manager (free on playstore) I killed any process under map that had the word friend in it and it has made a big difference even though Latitude has been disabled since day 1. There are lots of other battery saving and wake lock preventing things you can do with this app.

[Q] Google maps constantly running in background

Google maps seems to constantly be running in the background taking up around 7MB. Every time i kill it it starts running again almost immediately. I know its not taking up too much space much every little helps. How can I kill it permanently until I actually want to use it?
Thanks in advance!

Yeah it looks like many apps do that...those stupid developers...
Anyways, it looks like ure a minimal-ram-usage kinda guy - i respect that and your quest, i fear it wont last long cuz everytime u get a new app it probably does the same thing...but i'll help you how i can.
So dis is what I do:
(You need root, except for task killer)
Autostarts app: it allows you to disable autostarting bast***rd apps
Advanced task killer: it allows you to kill processes and services. Userful sometimes when u need to make sure.... i advice against letting it run on it's own letting it clean every half hour or so, cause it hogs up your phone at times, dunno why, but manual is always the best way.
Grennify:this is a real revolution for android, some rom developers have even put it as system app preinstalled in their roms. Read the apps description on the store. It will hibernate apps automatically, it runs in the background but it's more useful than harmful. It 'hibernates' apps instead of freezing them totally (like u can do with titanium backup pro and many other apps). It helps fight other backgrounf running user-hater apps such as facebook...you can apply it to gmaps, it will disable it automatically when u close the app.

I use Greenify to automatically hibernate Google Maps
I use App Quarantine to hibernate/freeze viber. It allows you to creqate a widget in the home screen which allows you to toggle freeze and unfreeze apps.

Thanks again for the help!
Turn off Google Now. That's what keeps it running.

What's the differences have you noticed after Deep Hibernation is enabled?

I want to make sure the Deep Hibernation (in v2.6 beta 5 with Xposed) is working as expected, in all circumstances but not just my test cases.
In which case, a hibernated app stays hibernated instead of being woken before? (without wake-up paths cut-off)
In which case, a hibernated app is still woken by another app (tell me which and when) with Deep Hibernation? Please also report the information shown in Greenify, like "Facebook is woken by Messenger: LoginService".
Note: Don't forget to reboot once after upgrading to beta 5.

That means some other app had requested the content from Email app.
It's a known restriction on current implementation that wake-up source of this type ("content provided") cannot be detected and stopped.

No, latest 5 isn't compatible with versions other than 5.x. You can use the stable, the only new feature is the deep hibernation and some minor fixes. Most changes are to be compatible with lollipop.

As per the What's New, 2.6-beta5 is for 4.4+, not 5+.
I'm using it on my Note 3 with 4.4.4; no issues. Getting great results with deep hibernation too; averaging between, I'd guesstimate, 0.5% and 2% per hour when screen's off. I'd have to look at BMW to see the exact numbers, but offhand, without Greenify I'd get something like 4 hours 100-0%; now, I'm getting 15+ hours with the same usage.
hangouts doesn't work with deep hibernation on. must be syncing google offline credentials every 50 secs to be able to send an sms trough hangouts. I still recieve them with no problem. Just can't send any with deep hibernation activated. after deactivating it all works fine.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll look into this case.
Hi oasis, I really like this new feature! It's working flawlessly for me on the S3 with 4.4.4.
Anyway it would be really nice to add some kind of white list for the deep hibernated apps to "see" some other apps. This is especially important for apps purchased by amazons app store.
(Paid) Apps downloaded from there are mostly checking if the app store is still installed during their startup. They can't find it on the phone, report this issue and keep closing after that.
The only (cumbersome) workaround for this atm is to launch the app store every time prior to launch these deep hibernated apps.
Hi Oasis, just wanted give feedback on the latest improvements of deep hibernation from today (beta 10 I guess). The Problem still exists

That really would be a welcome feature! :good: There are only a few apps that require a "deep sleep".
Anyway, it's like that just for me and in my case. But I think that it applies to other users as well.
I have unrooted Note 4 Exynos and I've been using Greenify for a week. Having an odd issue now. When I fully charge my phone, it consumes battery very low in the beginning but when charge drops about %60, battery level decreases dramatically. I use automated hibernation, keep notification and greenifying system apps features and this is my problem. So, what to do?

Never use a task killer
Hit Thanks if that was helpful
- Turn off all unnecessary connections. That includes GPS, NFC, Locationservices, Sync, etc. That alone will save you days.
- Turn off WiFi when you're not using it.
- Greenify all apps before you turn the screen off. Android keeps apps running in the background for quick access, but it eats battery. Yes, greenifying them will mean they take a second longer to open, but it'll save battery life.
- Turn down the brightness. Use LUX to go below 0%. (Which doesn't actually mean the screen turns off.)
- Disable or delete all bloatware, or as much as you can.
- Using a MicroSD? Drop a .nomedia file in every folder that doesn't need to show up in a mediaplayer. (pdf's, comics, etc). You can still open the files through a filemanager, but MediaScanner/Indexingservice won't freeze on them.
- Turn off all unnecessary sensors. Especially if you're using a Samsung, those have quite a lot of sensors.

Developers options > Limit Background Processes > "No Background Processes".
Remember that this means that if you're writing an email, and you open the browser, the email is gone. If you're listening to music, that's it, you can't do anything else or the music app shuts down.
There is absolutely no need to use task killers or anything like that on an Android. Android is designed to run with apps cached for quick opening of them. And designed to run on little free memory.
As long as apps "behave", it will not affect your battery having them running in background. If the odd app does seem to cause trouble, try using Greenify to hibernate such apps.
Having no apps running will definitely cause more drain for you, as it takes more cpu power to initialize them every time you open them, or the system does. Hence why task killers do more harm than good. :good:
If you have battery issues, it's likely poor reception on data, an inefficient setup or app wakelocks. Use GSAM to see about that.
