[Q] How do you do a full wipe on TWRP? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Does factory reset count as a full wipe/clean slate?
I know under the wipe option there are many things to check, and i usually only check cache and davlik.
Should i check all and wipe? Like data, system, etc....
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Wipe Dalvik Cache?

I know what happens when you do a factory reset/wipe, but what exactly happens if I only wipe Dalvik Cache? (I'm about to flash a ROM, don't want to do a complete factory reset/wipe, but wondering if I can still help "eliminate ghosts" by wiping Dalvik Cache.)
Bump, is this just like a crazy question or something?

dalvik is a virtual machine in android operating system that runs applications, which is similar java vm. dalvik builds some sort of cache of applications (i wouldn't go into details) to run them faster in dalvik cache space. you can clear them out, and android will rebuild the cache on the next boot. and the initial boot will take longer than usual once you wiped the dalvik cache because android needs to rebuild it.
So it's something that you can safely wipe on occasion right, just to clear up any bugs?

when you flash a custom rom, usually the rom automatically wipes out dalvik cache to remove all that junk from the previous rom.. you do not need to wipe it regularly unless you flash apps or any other system modifications on top of the existing rom via clockworkmod recovery very often
But is there any "harm" in doing it? Any consequences other than a longer reboot time?

Not at all. Apps will just be a little sluggish for a bit.

Using Kies to goto 2.2, does that wipes Dalvik cache? Koz I went to 2.2 from kies mini, then ODIN'd a Voodoo kernel and i never wiped it manually...
so should I?
many thanks
You are trying to not factory reset but any rom you will find will have a system, data, data_data and cache wipe built into it. You can try finding a Rom you like and remove the wipes from the update_script but those wipes are put there on purpose. Kies will wipe everything too.
or use root explorer go in to system and find dalvik cache and delete files =>
sir can i ask a question?

Yes it is normal for it to take longer than a normal bootup. It is rebuilding the Dalvik that was just wiped. #nosorcery

Full wipe?What is it exactly?

Hello all. I just recently got my s2 and have been flashing several Rome. BTW thanks to all the devs and their hard work. Anyways, some of the roms state to do a full wipe. I have been going into recovery and doing wipe cache and data. Is this what is meant by full wipe? Thanks in advance.

Includes what you mention plus dalvik, and everything else except sdcard.

FULL WIPE means you use the wipe data/factory reset.
Wipe cache is seperate BUT INCLUDED when you perform a full wipe. . I think it is just your temporary cache and can be used to help clear out issues on occasions. It wipes the temporary data for the apps but not the dalvich cache of the apps. (I may be slightly off here with that one).
Wipe dalvich cache is seperate and wipes the applications data. It wipes just temporary data that apps are using. This is normally used when you are flashing updates to the rom your on, flashing modems, flashing kernels, etc.
SO when you perform a FULL WIPE it will delete out ALL THE USER APPS AND DATA ASSOCIATED WITH THEM. This is why you backup your USER APPS and their associated data with titanium backup. Once the FULL WIPE is done all user apps are gone and ONLY apps that are included in the rom under system/apps will still be there. All the apps in data/apps are wiped gone. A FULL WIPE does not delete your sdcard so you will not lose your music, pictures, etc.

OK thanks for the insight guys. So is it possible to perform a full wipe from within cwm? Or is it something different entirely?

You wipe from cwm. Wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition are on the main cwm screen, wipe dalvik cache is in the advanced menu. Wiping all three of those is considered a full wipe.

You can also do a factory reset from the dial pad: *#*#7780#*#*
I think it's the same as wipe data/factory reset from recovery, but I don't know of any verification of that.
Incidentally, wipe data/factory reset belongs to stock 3e recovery, as well as CWM recovery.

Wipe

I've read a lot about wiping your phone before flashing a rom. What does wipe mean? Is it the same as a factory reset or is it just the cache without doing anything with my apps?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
In your case, it means you have to do a factory reset to perfom a full wipe. All your personal data/installed/settings apps etc. will be lost (can be found in Settings/Privacy/Factory Data Reset).
It is sometimes not necessary to perfom a wipe (depends on the rom), but highly recommended to avoid problems caused by old data/ settings etc.
Some roms perfom automatically a full wipe.
Whatever you prefer: don't forget to backup your data.

[Q] What to clear after ICS upgrade

I have just updated my device from 2.3.5 to 4.3. The installation instructions didn't mention what I should clear after upgrade (dalvik, data, battery stats, etc). So should I clear any of them?

Not a bad idea to clear data, if you have a backup.
At the least, I'd suggest you clear Cache and Davlik. Battery stats don't matter much.
Should I have cleared them before flashing the rom? If I clear them now will I have to reflash the phone?

No you can clear it after too, only data will be cleared, but the rom will still be on your phone.
I would advise you to clear data, dalvik cache and cache partition between gingerbread and ics (or any new major release for that matter), as well as wipe battery stats and fix permissions.
Between small updates within the same version just clearing dalvik cache is enough.

Wipe caches / wipe Dalvik caches before or after?

Ok stupid question, but I rather be sure than sorry. When I update the same Rom
(from xiaomi.eu_multi_MI10_21.3.10_v12-11 to xiaomi.eu_multi_MI10_21.3.17_v12-11)
Do I have to do the wipe caches and Dalvik before or after I install the Rom?
If I do a wipe data that means I have to configure everthing again like mail accounts etc?
Thanks
Short and simple. No. You are only updating security patch.
Thanks shivadow
