I found a very good app to stop battery drain from background apps. It's not a task killer, it puts them into hibernation. It's called greenify and is free on play store.

I'm not sure about the usage of memory booster.
RAM exists to be filled, and to maintain datas already in memory costs nothing compared to rewrite these datas in RAM.
If you remove data from the RAM, when you relaunch the concerned apps then they'll had to reload these datas. It means ROM reading access and RAM writing access and maybe cpu consumption for this operation, all of this only to do a read access on the RAM.
This kind of apps is paradoxical, you may gain in performance because you won't have to empty RAM before launching a dormant app. But you'll loose in performance because when you relaunch a paused app, it'll had to reload all the datas from ROM.
And it may reduce your battery life.
However, talking about battery life, as we have a Snapdragon cpu, Qualcomm released an app to optimize cpu states by regulating other apps activities.
It don't need to be root.

Yet you are not right 100% you have a very good point..
First of all memory booster not only kills some apps..but it cleans cache and other that added in latest versions..
And there are apps that open on startup and if you kill them with mb they dont open again..
And it has an option..that when u turn of the screen it kills apps...and then you have the minum usage of your phone on offscreen..and only when you go on screen apps open again..
I think a taskkiller is gopd to be there..and yet is an option thanks though for posting

I have installed RAM Booster and ZD Box(task killer) to help free up RAM, however i feel that the RAM usage on my x10 is still too high.
On average the free RAM on my phone is between 40MB -60MB, is that normal?
My question is how else can i free RAM on my phone? will installing apps to SD Card help? Also my internal memory widget is reading "414MB used out of 465MB" thats sound too high. my phone feels laggy and ive even stopped using live wallpapers, sumtimes the phone would even reboot on its own but hasnt done so in a while.
if u install too much apps without using app2sd, its normal to have that amount of ram.. i recommend u to use link2sd, u can manually select apps to move to sd. bt make sure that dont move any widget apps to sdcard or else it will stop functioning and appearing in ur widget list
I use Advanced Task Killer, from the market.
That being said, Android naturally will kill processes and apps. It waits for a certain amount of time, or until the resources are needed elsewhere. You shouldn't have to wory about how much free ram you have available... Unlike Windows, Android will manage it all on it's own!

First i don't this is a place to post such question, there is a section called Q&A.
Second, i recommend using AutoKiller Memory Optimizer, it's super amazing and very essential app for me. I get usually more than 100 MB free RAM most of the time, and it's easy customizable, after your read the help section.
Give it a try
it wouldnt be a lack of memory causing a phone to reboot but the app w memory leaks causing the phone to reboot. the apps youre killing werent designed for you to kill them unexpectedly. they were designed to run any necessary cleanup routines on exit. if the app youre killing doesnt have an option to exit, then you should replace it w one that does or ask the author to provide an exit/close for the app to free itself from the list of running processes.
you're introducing dirty unintended states for the apps and the os by killing them unexpectedly. you will have immediate gains in performance and will gain unexpected problems when those same apps go to run later. lost widgets, widget data, duplicate widgets, or maybe even break an app that wasnt designed to open from a dirty state.
keep an eye on the tasks, but leave them alone if you can.

Thanx guys will try it...
to op, i think u better try the autokiller 1st. because the link2sd and app2sd need to make partition.
1st make a fat32
2nd make a ext2
size of partition 2 put less than 1gb, i assuming u having a 8gb class 2 sdcard
the rest of it goes to fat32
ps : this require u to format ur sdcard. so make sure u backup it up in ur pc

i use automatic task killer and it works pretty good for me...
Hi, i recommend the app "Taskiller Full" from AxDroid LLC ( i dont know if the free version is the same ) when i kill apps get a 150-200 free ram
do NOT use task killers. all you will succeed in doing is to use MORE battery. Andoid (which is linux based) is designed to have very little free memory. The way android handles application and memory use is it keeps frequently launched apps in memory so they launch quicker. if a task comes along that requires resources android will simply ditch the reserved memory (that is reserved in case you launch a particular app that is in memory) and will allow it to be utilised for the new app. as has been said 1000's of times before, free ram is wasted ram!
all a task killer will do is to fight against the native android instruction set, each time android attempts to launch a process into ram the task killer will kill it, and each time this happens it will chew a bit more battery life.
having a lack of ram is not necessarily the reason your handset is lagging.....the perceived lack of ram is only because it is earmarked for potential use.
my advise to you? just leave it be, maybe reboot your handset a bit more frequently, and remove some of the apps that you have installed that are fighting against android!
good luck!

It always happens that crashes and errors in the system and slow performance are the problems occurred because of the full or nearly full memory. Issue of memory overload the Smartphones are not immune. It can be avoided, if you know how to maintain phone’s storage space. If your phone has large memory then it will run very smoothly.
For performance of the phone to improve you can delete the cache from time to time which in turn will lead to the better performance of the phone. It can be done by using an application Apps2SD which clears both your cache and histories which are not necessary after some time. By clearing cache it frees up the internal space which there by leads to improved performance in the phone.
1.Try turn OFF (a)Sync(b)Wifi(c)GPS by this a constant process will be stopped and which will also improve your battery life and there by making it more use able, bcoz apps like gmail, contacts, maps constantly updates.
2.Uninstall apps which u don't prefer using. Further checking apps which eat more ram is to look in setting/apps/running and try freezing them.
3.Install task manager which provide operation of auto killing of apps in between time interval.
My Config ROM: FXP149-CM10
Kernel : flykernel 0.7a
launcher : ilauncher 2.2.1
Hope this Helps.
what task manager are you using?
it may helpful for some beginner
but i dont think it helps a lot......
just try Ram manager.
if it useful u can buy full version with more flexible option.
It's work for me.

Ok taskmanager are memory hog when coupled with lot of background services eg: widget on screen, social syncing etc.
But if you have organized set of application install with active task managers, it helps solves unecessary lags.
I have 200mb RAM available most of the time ... Installed 40+ apps packages other the default.
Frequently play games like Asphalt 7, Dead Trigger, ShadowGun DeadZone, Real football, Real Racing, GT Racing, CS Portable.

yes exactly, at the beginning i also tried to use taskmanager, but then i google Android RAM and found guides who say the same. and it seem logic for me. so just let it be. no need to use such apps
and custom roms can drain battery more fast,so dont wonder.
first you should check your mobile and wifi signals and stuff like that.

Thats not really true, taskmanagers doesn't make your phone faster, and free ram is not necessarily good, android manages the ram in another way than for an example Windows. Android kills or puts processes in a kind of freezed mode instead of leaving them running all the time, and when a app needs more ram, android will automatically kill apps so that you can play games and so on.
If you want more free ram, you should use Supercharger or Ram Manager Pro instead, because their alot better than using a taskmanager.
Read this article about it:

Switching off wifi and gps when not in use is just a godamn basic when you use a smartphone, i don't even see the point of opening a topic to say that. Are there still people keeping everything on all the time ?
Task managers are not required since 4.0 at least, if not 2.3 if i remember right. Free ram is useless on Android, i never got this obsession about having free Ram. Many 4.1 and 4.2 custom roms leave less free ram than the official 4.0 and are still way smoother and fast.
This topic is complete bul****, and i'm not even a developer knowing that.
This thread should be moved to /dev/null , because its nothing new in it, and there is alot better tutorials on how to optimize your Xperia Ray.

No need care about number of apps installed:fingers-crossed:
swap ram expander
Adding swap ram (no need for much, 300 to 500 mb is ok) makes such a difference. Since I've started using it, I can multitask and I don't get the big slowdowns I was used to. No blank screen when returing to the launcher or horrible wait times under Chrome. From my experience, Android phones with 512mb of ram generally struggle a lot because they always have to erase and reload ram pages so they don't exceed it. I have a class 10 32gb sd card btw.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to limit or reduce the amount of ram that the phone uses. When i go to settings / apps/ running/ my phone consumes over 700mb of ram. When this happens my phone lags big time to the point it's almost unusable during those moments. I'm running SuperJelly m4 and have tried full wiping.

Have a look at the applications that are running (if I may suggest, SystemPanel) and determine which is using the most amount of memory. From there you can figure out if a specific application is hogging all your memory or there is an abundance of processes that are unnecessarily running (from which you can freeze using Titanium Backup or Disable under Settings > Apps).
I agree, sounds like a bad app, memory leak etc..I'm using around 750-800mb with no issues. Also , if not rooted you should try it along with some custom roms/kernals. Much better processing management along with speed and battery

Hello world,
I have been using several ROMs for my 16GB Nexus 4 and I have a complain about RAM usage: it is never close to its full potential.
I did the following experiment: I opened up lots of apps(dialer, messaging, browser, facebook etc) not very demanding the ram usage was about 50-60% and most of the apps were loaded in RAM as there was no latency in switching between them. The I've opened up GTA 3. And the RAM usage was barely around 60-65%. Overall not much of an increase. I figured out that even though I had over 30% free RAM and android killed my other apps because even though they were in Recents it took the same time to open up.
So my QUESTION is: Is there any way to enable agressive multi tasking (90-95% ram usage) or a way to disable android task killimg mecanics in order to achieve a higher number of apps loaded in ram, therfore improving the overall speed?
Now I am running PSX ROM with S4 patch and Neo kernel
Peace

Thanks for the tips, but I want app switching to be fast, therfore no ZRam. As far as I know zram is slow virtual ram that allows many apps to stay in "memory" but switching to them is not fast. If I am getting something wrong, please tell me. Also I want to use the full potential of my RAM not having maximum 65% in high stress situations.
Try tweaking minfree values, google android ram minfree to get a better concept of it.
Basically its to adjust the number of pages at wich the system will start killing apps/processes with a given priority (foreground, background, services, system, etc).

Yes, exactly that. So keep minfree as low as posible, but still give system core processes the priority. This way, ram will have to be really full (really low free ram) for apps to get killed.

Don't worry about the amount of free RAM you have. Android is designed to use the maximum RAM available to it. Task killer apps may have been useful in Gingerbread but are unnecessary in Jellybean and later versions. For more info read this and this.
Greenify is all you need. If you're rooted and have Xposed even better, you can even make some apps stay in memory so that they won't be killed off.
