Hi Guys,
I have karbonn A15 android ICS(4.0.4) smartphone, its not rooted.
I want to move the app Data to my external sd card, i tried to move the data folder from the internal SD (android/data) to External SD (root folder), just to check whether it releases any memory in the storage section in phone settings. but the internal storage was same, there was no change, can anyone tell me where does the app data resides in the internal memory, its fine if i can move app data manually to the external sd card.
I also want some clarification on below questions:
1. Also i want to know whether there is any risk rooting phone like (Bricking Phone), as i have bricked my previous Galaxy Ace when i rooted and used ROM manager.
2. Also i have heard about Folder Binding app which automatically transfers App Data to External Sd Card, is there any risk of bricking phone.
3. Whats the easiest method to root Karbonn A15 phone, i am not that tech savvy, so easiest method would be grateful in rooting device.
My concern is just to move App Data to External Sd Card, because i have some app whose Data increase very frequently (E.g: FireFox app).
Answers to this would be really appreciated.

Rooting:
here are the steps
the driver files are included on the phone internal card called pcdrivers.zip. you can connect the usb mount the internal usb storage and copy the file to your pc. if you face any problems you can download the file from here
1. Enable USB Debugging -> Under SETTINGS -> DEVELOPER OPTIONS
2. Install the drivers for the phone.
3. download "Android Root Unlock" from sourceforge.net and extract it to your Disktop
4. navigate to the above folder and run the batch file ICS_Root_Unlocker.bat
the batch file will reboot your phone a couple of times and will wait with a message "Press Any Key to continue"
IMPORTANT NOTE : if you PC is saying "PRESS ANY KEY" note if your phone is on or rebooting....
if it is Rebooting, wait for it to start before pressing a key
5. After a couple of boots the phone will be rooted
6. verify that the Root is complete by observing a "Superuser" shortcut in the application list
Moving Apps:
Once rooted, download Folder Mount From the Play Store
- Once installed, open FolderMount and grant superuser access when asked.
- In FolderMount, you have the options to:
- Name your folder (IE: "Generic Game 1")
- Select the "Source" Folder (the one on your local storage)
- Select the "Destination" Folder (the one on your SD Card)
When you enter these details, it will then move them to your SD Card!
I highly recomend FolderMount Pro, because it also shows you filesizes when browsing.
Common Locations of Large Files:
Two common locations for games (IE: Gameloft games, EA Games, etc.)
Android/data
Android/obb
I know it's not the easiest process ever, but hopefully I've explained it enough to get people started.

Is there any method/app that can provide a similar functionality without rooting the phone? I tried rooting my Karbonn A21 without success and do not really want to brick it?
Also is there any way of backing up the phone and app data before rooting? Will the existing apps and data be wiped out by rooting?
Thanks in advance.

You can use App2SD but you have to check if your device is compatible or not.
you can use Kies to backup your apps, settings, etc.

Use apps2sd ........it is compatible with A15

use DS Super App2SD Lite it will work if your phone is rooted and it can move the app and app data to the sd card
foldermount
so quick question, i transferred games to external sd, worked fine and all, but after a while my games asked me to download the files again, anyone know a solution?
I m using foldermount but there is write error mention that was unable to write into the external sdcard caused by a permission issue where normal apps are not able to write anything into storage/ext_sd. What should I do next to solve this problem? Attempt to recover using the apps not solving it.
This is what i mean.
Moving app Data to External SD card
in particular the movement of android apps data from internal memory to SD card is a simple process, but the problem with these issues is your smartphone is to be a latest version like 4.3 version.
Idea
Can I move the game folders from Internal Storage: Android/data -> SD card: Android/data, will it work on non rooted phone? In the Data folder on the SD card are partition of some apps and they work just fine. Same with folder "obb".
moving apps data and obb to External sdcard.
I recommend using an app called folder mount. ..it needs root but it's as easy as fishing in a barrel. .. I am using It and it works fine... and now you have a clear space in your internal storage.
Hey, I followed above instructions and my phone Samsung S5 6.0.1 successfully rooted, but now I've entered into an endless restarting loop.
Please help what's the problem might be?

hey guys i am starting to loose it here
this is the situation, i have a sg2 and its rooted 2.3.6 stock rom.
now i have about 100 installed app, and I bought titanium back up and at one time I moved all user apps to sd card to clear some memory. That caused a big problem for me which manifested in that when I connect my phone to my computer or car stereo that once I unplug the usb cable or disconnect it from my computer the phone turns off and reboots. It drove me crazy I thought maybe its an app thats causing this, in the end i had to move all user apps to internal storage using titanium and the problem faded. I tried it both using USB debugging mode on and off.
So my question is whats the use of titanium or app2sd if it will cause this problem when i move apps, and how can i know which app will cause such a weird rebooting behavior, as I am not comfortable in having all user apps on my internal storage.
ANY help would be really appreciated. And an explanation to why such a behavior happens so that I will learn more about android systems

The explanation is simple. If you connect your phone to PC or whatever via USB and toggle "Mass Storage Mode", you dismount the SD Card from Android OS and mount it for the PC or where you've plugged the phone. This way Android OS can't access anything on the SD card, thus failing to load/run any app there.
To move them to SD, I will use the app options you can find in Settings > Applications > Manage Applications. If the application has the option to move to the SD, then is safe to move it without problems. If the application doesn't have that option and you move it, you could compromise the Android OS stability (depending on the app).
App2SD uses a separate partition on the SD to store the app, that way you can mount the external_sd partition without touching the App2SD partition.
Hope this explanation helped!
do u toggle mass storage ?
could also live wallpapers cause a problem with what I mentioned above.
I usually connect my phone via the following
wireless and network, then usb utilities then press connect to storage PC
So how can I fix my situation now, it all started when I used titanium to move user apps to sd card,
So if I use titantium to move back the apps to internal storage solve the problem completely and then follow you method of moving apps.
Another question is moving apps using titanium doing something different than what app2sd is doing?
App2SD doesn't do the same as Titanium Backup move to SD. App2SD creates a symbolic link so the system thinks the apps are being stored in internal memory but the link redirects them to the SD card.
You could try restoring your moved apps from Titanium Backup and then applying an App2SD script. Remember that to make App2SD work you will need 2 partitions on your SD card.
I am still confused as to How that works, I wish someone would write a detailed guide as many of us r newbie users. So do I have also to Partition my sd if I will move apps to sd using the move to sd option from the phone settings- manage applications.
It's so confusing the difference between moving apps using titanium and app2sd, also how can I partition the sd card.
Also could live wallpapers and widgets cause a USB connection mode instability
I haven't taken notice to any others having this problem, but I may have simply missed it. When I use AOKP or CM9, I can't find certain files on either the built-in storage or in the sd card that I put in it today (I don't know if I have to do anything special to it or not -- do I have to format it?). I have some backups of apps and a few other things, but I can't browse the folders on my sd card because, for some reason, they're simply not listed. Regardless of file browser, I can't see certain files and folders.
Has anyone else had this problem and/or does anyone know what might be causing it? The files aren't hidden and I can see them just fine when I restore my rooted/stock 2.3.4 backup.
There are a couple possibilities why you can't see things. One is that your ext SD card may be now called EMMC. Two, and most likely, you have to give FE root priviledges in preferences.
Remember that any folder with a . (Period) in front of the folder name will be considered hidden. Some apps hide the folders they create automatically and as previously stated above if the file explorer yer using doesn't have root it may not be able to see them.

So how to show the hidden folders that have a period in front of them ? remove the period and the app will show itself ?
Am new to all this so please bare with me.
am trying to gain access to my phones root folders,Apps,Apks....and to make my phone read my external SD card.
my previous ROM was ICS 4.0.2. then i Rooted it..i used Method 2 + Method 2 Advanced---thanks to Jiangyi
Reference : http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1679778
Then i flashed aokp_i9100g_jb_milestone-1 and then gapps-jb-20121011-signed for jellybean 4.1.x
The AOKP_Milestone works fine but my problem is that am not able to see my file manager on my device.i can see them on the computer only when i hook the device (i9100G) to the Computer and some of the folders do have periods in front of them,i did fix permissions from CWM recovery, but still nothing.
before flashing the Custom ROM i did not do any backup or restore, i had some applications on the device and some on the External SD card.
am aware of my mistake which probably was the sol issue of problem
when i try to go to Google play through the device it simply does not connect to it,"thats a problem that i had even on ICS"i was able to go to Google play from my computer and install an application from there ,but now when i try to install an app like the AppBack or any app for example
it says that the app has installed into my device but am not able to find it anywhere neither in the device or the root folders of the device through my (computer) only. because am not able to see any of my files through the device.
the Google_Library,music,files,diary,videos apps just doesn't exist. i see them all piled up in one widget in a faded color but they are simply not accessible.
and my mini external sd card can be seen by the device from the storage section in settings only but it says "Mount SD card
Insert an SD card for mounting"
when i click on it nothing happens.
i have not formatted my external SD card after flashing aokp rom. am not able to from the phone nor from the computer and i dont know what to press in CWM recovery in Advanced section so many options there don't know which one to do and which one to leave alone.
so what is my problem, what is the solution for this?
thank you

This forum is for the i777. You don't have this phone model. Please ask in your own forum. All u need to gain access to system files is a file manager that allows root access. For hidden files, I just use a file manager that has an option to show them.
Hey there guys...
To start with i have my S3 two days now and i absolutely love this phone...:')
But,after installing lots of games my internal memory has gone full and i can't download any data in-game because i have low storage space...
My external sd on the other hand is around 10gb free but when i try to move the data to the same folder on the external the data isn't identified by the game and it asks me to download again?
It has become really frustrating,it seems i can't do anything about it...
Any suggestions to try?
Cheers,George
As the system now uses unified storage all apps will remain on internal memory; moving the data alone to an external SD card will have no use without altering the application to look for that location for its data. i.e. in the GS2 you had a move to SD option since the phone was partitioned. With the S3 however this option is not there which means that when an application is downloaded all of its information needs to be stored on the internal storage. When the "Move to SD" option was selected within the S2 or prior phones, it informs the application that its new location is within x folder rather than the folder it was originally downloaded too. Since this option is no longer there then the application has no way of being told where its new location is.
Maybe move to SD could be an add-on with a mod/hack but I am not sure if this is possible. Maybe check with a developer?
Have you got a prior Android phone? Maybe install the application on to it; use the "Move to SD" option and see if that will allow it? It's just a suggestion; if you don't have a different Android phone I can try it for you.
Edit: Just tried it; the phone itself doesn't even check for applications stored within an external SD. Sorry man - the only way around it would be a mod/custom/hack (if possible).

I did check for you; the S3 physically doesn't look for application data in the external SD (I edited original post after testing few things).. There probably are ways around it as mentioned but you would need to speak with developers for further insight.
If worst comes to worst application developers may have to implement a look in x location first, if no data found, look "here" in to their applications.
As the phone is unified storage you can store applications in the full ~12GB storage space (All the ones I have, have roughly 11.3GB after OS and all is on it) so have you used the phones storage itself for only applications; and the SD for media etc?
I am interested to know how you have managed to fill at least 11GB of space with applications; how many do you have? How is the performance of the phone with this many applications on it? Any lag navigating (I know there shouldn't be with quad core processor - but it's interesting to know if hundreds of applications cause lag between screen scrolling).
You can use an app called directory bind to link the game data on the SD to a mounting point on the internal SD. Search for it and you'll find it, not sure if I got it here or the play store.

Yup, there's directory topic on forum, as well as working 'gl to sd' app in play store. It is not just for gameloft games.

Thank you all guys!!
Well i filled it with lots of games that's why i don't have much space available!
No the phone is flying,it doesn't lag at all!
I use Dragon Ics rom and Siyah Kernel...no oc....
I'll try directory bind and post back soon!
To put applications on the sdcard, you could use symlinking (confirmed this works myself).
Install the application, then go to /data/app and move the apk file to your sdcard (/mnt/extSdCard) or inside a folder on your sdcard.
Then type ln -s /mnt/extSdCard/your-apk.apk /data/app/your-apk.apk
Hi guys,
I have android kitkat 4.4.4, which is OS that has disabled function of moving large app data (obb files) to external SD card. My device is Huawei Ascend G620S-L01 (same as Honor 4 Play). I have root. I am browsing this and other forums for 2 days. I tried several solutions, but each has a issue. I tried each type of solution with more apps so that I can be sure, there is no problem in the app:
- Clean master says that my device does not allow to move apps to SD.
- System app uninstaller told me there is no need to transfer data, because sd card is shared (wtf?). I tried some more apps that should transfer app data.
- SD unlockers - I thought there would be a need to unlock my sd card, it was written on some forum, so I tried. It went successful, but still nothing was able to transfer app data to sd card.
Then I read about mounting, so I tried several programs. All of them had same issue - the game was looking for its data and trying to download them, eventhough they had been mounted. More people with different devices, had same problem, but most of them were just running game unmounted, or without reboot. I tried reboot and also checked mount before running a game.
I hope I was just doing something wrong and it will be possible to store apps on my SD. One guy had a solution for this, he wrote two scripts to overwrite something that I did not understand, but they made it possible to store obb data on SD card and also made apps look for them on SD (I have no problems to transfer data manually, but no app will look for them on external SD). Please, is there any solution for me?
EDIT: My phone has also emulated SD card, but I need to transfer it to external SD.

Hi, I can't help you but was hoping you could help me. What rooting method did you use. I have already unlocked my bootloader. Thanks
I can copy/move files from internal storage to SD Card if I use the built-in file manager. However, if I use any 3rd party file manager, the operation will fail. It is as though the SD Card is read-only. I can copy from the SD Card to internal storage just fine.
I've tried ES File Explorer, File Manager Pro, Solid Explorer and they all failed. I've given grants to write to the root of SD-Card. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?
Try with a real file manager like
https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/com.mixplorer

Mixplorer works great. Root Explorer also works.
Thank you for your recommendation!
I really don't get it. At first, nothing works. Then when I install Root Explorer and grant storage access to the root of the SD-card, it immediately works.
Then I tried MiXplorer and it also works. Now when I return to Solid Explorer and it is working now.
What's going on? Does Root Explorer unlock something which makes it "click"? I don't get it at all. I only hope it is reliable in the long run and not switching "on" and "off" randomly.

Root Explorer has been the ultimate for me. I bought the paid version when it first came out years ago. It always acomplishes whatever task I need it to do.

Any other workaround?
I still have the same problem...
I have a new P30 Pro and Nano SD card Just arrived.
I can write (and read) the card by external reader, connecting the phone via USB to a PC, etc. etc.
But when the card is on the phone I can only use Heawei file manager!!!
I have enable the option allow apps to write to external card.
I've just update on EMUI 10 build 10.0.0186
I can't beleive I tried a lot file manager and also some alternative app like quickpic and no one works good!!!!
Fix the problem...
After enable the option allow apps to write to external card, I tried to disable developer settings.
Also tried to active some app I've disable before... 2 app, default browser and HiCare!
That's all and now I have no problem writing Nano SD card with all of my app!!!
I also rebbot the phone sveral time...

What's going on? Does Root Explorer unlock something which makes it "click"? I don't get it at all. I only hope it is reliable in the long run and not switching "on" and "off" randomly.

Which one of the Root Explorer apps that we can find on Play Store did the trick for you ?

I enabled the default browser and the HiCare app (actually they were not disabled, so I just opened them to complete their setup) but this did not help either.
I even formatted the memory card (using my phone "format card" option) and then reset my phone to factory defaults and set it up again from the beginning without restoring backups.
I still have not found a solution to thus issue, though.
Any ideas anyone?

Hi there.
I have the exact same problem.
None of those steps helped me
I tried installing every single Root Explorer there is in the Play Store, but none worked.

I had to instal FX file commander to get SD card write permission....I can't make it stick, every time I reboot I have to reset the sd card write permission.
I have similar problems relating to this thread on my mate 20 pro after updating to Android 10 (EMUI 10). I've tried all the methods mentioned here and it worked briefly before restarting the phone. After restarting the phone, it went back to being unable to copy files to External Storage.
I noticed that i was able to delete and rename files on the external storage but i just can't seem to copy anything into it.
I can copy files from the external card to internal storage but not the other way around.
Tried using MiXplorer, the only way i can copy files into the external card is by this method:
i copied the file and it shows error, but there's an image of the file created on the external card with 0 kb. Then i overwrite the file and replacing the '0 kb' file and it worked. And another method to just to use the built-in file manager which is a pain to use and the UI are crappy.
It was a lengthy method and therefore I decided to downgrade to Android 9 for now.
I also noticed i can't change the download directory of my Ttorrent app to any folder of my choice in external storage.
anyone can suggest a better method to overwrite this external drive issue? Thanks in advanced.

This this the "official" reply at the Huawei forums:
https://consumer.huawei.com/en/comm...-disabled-for-3rd-party-apps-!/topicId_90489/
Now, what I've come to notice is the following:
- All Huawei and Google apps I have tried, do have access to the memory card (e.g. Google Maps is allowed to save its offline maps on the SD card, the same for Google News and the articles it downloads)
- Some 3rd party apps do have access. E.g. Here We Go maps can save its maps on the external card. ASR Voice Recorder can save its recordings to a specific memory card folder, the one that is automatically created -on the card- by the app when it is installed on the phone. Maybe there are other app that we will find they can, too.
- So it seems that the rule is not general, as Huawei implies at that thread I have posted above.
My biggest concern was that MixPlorer has now limited use, and this is kind of sad as it was my favorite explorer.
Huawei Files manager is not bad, it's actually quite OK, but it bothers me that you cannot add 3rd party clouds on it. If it had that option I would be happy with it. I like it that it has that "favorites" option. For now I have created a folder "My Archives" on the internal memory and I initially save almost everything there (e.g. my Nova Launcher backups). Then I use Huawei Files manager to move them to the external memory card on the folders I want.

Hey that's a good idea of creating a temp folder on your internal drive before using Huawei file manager to transfer everything out to your external card. However it requires additional steps to get it done but it's a good idea nonetheless. Thanks for that suggestion. For me i'm so used to be using solid explorer to do all my file operations as it has google drive integration which makes it easy n fast to transfer between drives. So i guess my best bet is to downgrade to android 9, it's just much more comfortable to work with and in my opinion, android 10 is not that big of a deal and not much substantial changes anyway. Hehe.
Every reboot I always have this facing problem!
Sometime I must reboot because my smartphone switch off for low battery....
When I reboot try to disable and re-enable the special option in developer menù, also try to uninstall and after install again the memory card (from setup/memory menù).
After that try to copy some file to memory card with default file manager an default Gallery...
Sometimes it is enough sometimes I have to try more and more... But after several time it works!
Xplore
Try xplore by lonely cat games. It's working on my mate 20 pro and survived reboots.
