OK some of you guys who are racking their brains why they can't do this, you know you have everything right. Well I was one of those guys then I tried something and felt so F'n dumb. If you know you have linux live cd and your phone is set up right but something juuuust isn't right I think I know what your problem is. My dumba$$ ASSUMED I had to be in Fastboot mode, GUESS what. . . DUH, nope, your phone should be on regular. OMG after I did that and ran moonshine and let it go I was S-Off in minutes. I feel like an a$$, so if your having problems and kept booting in to fastboot stop! lol Hope this helps, thanks is always nice, peace and good luck.
So you should already know to take off fastboot in the battery section, put her in debugging mode, be on 2.06 FW. Have a linux cd burnt, I used mint 15, phone should be charged up.
Run your linux cd, if your on mint right click in the downloads folder were you should already have downloaded moonshine, like I said in the download folder right click and open terminal, then paste this command IF YOU ARE VERIZON tar -zxf moonshine_dlx_2.06.605.1.tgz that unzips moonshine in the downloads folder, now LEAVE THE TERMINAL OPEN and copy and paste this sudo ./distiller Read everything in the terminal the type Yes , read some more and type Yes when prompted again. Uh yes your phone should already be connected, Then sit back and let it do it's thing. When it is finished it WILL TELL YOU it's done and ask you to power the phone by holding Volume down and power, then life is GOOD again and you can start doing other junk to your phone again. Like CWM, make a back up MAYBE<<<YESSS do that.
People should have to take a quiz verifying that they've read the instructions before being allowed to download Moonshine.

Yea maybe, but when you read a tut and it has pix, and people have waited a long time for this it is an easy thing to overlook.

I get mine all the way through second boot, then it says waiting for device and just dot after dot. ............................................................. Like that. I let it run for like 30 min and nothing. Followed all the steps correctly and checked twice. I'm also using mint 15.

Must not have checked very closely. So far, every single person who has had a problem was overlooking something. Unless your phone has some anomaly ,the problem is most likely user error.

Ah, ok I'm doing something very basic wrong. Just got on a fresh Windows machine with no SDK on it. So when I run distiller it tells me to run distiller again and read. Just downloaded the sdk right now but dont know the steps between here and being bale to run the distiller....
Sorry for my very noob query
I did a factory wipe and reset, after setting the phone via instructions, booting the phone as I would normally, installed the PDAnet driver, after uninstalling the HTC sync and drivers, reboot laptop all went well. Minutes later went to do my girls DNA without wipe and factory reset got the WTF error. So she doesn't want to reset her phone. I'm not an expert, just thought I would share my mistake and hoping you guys will to. And maybe we can help sort each other out.
Scratch that, the PdaNetA4126.exe was after moonshine, I needed that on Windows 8 later for ADB

Disable fast boot in settings/battery then enable USB debugging, restart your phone then hold power and volume down, wipe and factory reset. Boot your phone like you normally would. plug it in to your PC while already running your live CD, moonshine should already be in the download folder, open a terminal, if running mint just right click IN the DL folder and open terminal. I'm guessing you already downloaded and unzipped moonshine. then copy and paste this just like it is in the terminal
sudo ./distiller sit back and wait, Yes Yes then a little more waiting.
After moonshine and S-off I downloaded>>>> recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.2-dlx.img and used Windows/ADB to flash or install to DNA. Couldn't get adb to find DNA. . . . until I uninstalled and deleted HTC Sync and used PdaNetA4126.exe Then finally in device manager it came up an Android interface or something. So for me I made a folder called "fastboot" and dropped it right in the C drive so when I open a CMD window I can just type "cd c:\fastboot" then with phone connected in NORMAL mode and PDA installed type "adb devices" you should Fblah blahblah, that should be your DNA Then I believe you type "adb reboot bootloader" and your phone will go into fastboot mode, it should say "FASTBOOT USB" then type "fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.2-dlx.img" that is NOT a typo so don't fk with it! Then reboot into recovery and back up your phone. Then for me I flashed viperDNA_1.3.1.zip and Blackout_DeoDexed_LockMod.zip the lock mod puts the lock ring on the DNA on the bottom right corner of your phone. I like, a lot. The viper ROM is cool with sweet install options, the cwm is the touch version, GET IT you'll like it I promise.
That is if you download that version of cwm and place it in the same folder, hence the command.

Moonshine doesn't require a wipe, just some users have wiped and its moved forward, it removes whatever is preventing it from going through, an app, a setting, any number of things may get in the way, but the time to find it wasn't taken.
Moonshine can also be used on windows or Linux machines, not sure about osx.

Confirmed: Moonshine with Windows and Linux Mint BOTH work and NO Factory Wipe necessary...at least NO Wipe for me in Windows. Just let it do it's magic; search for drivers, reboot many time..takes about 5-10 min. Some may S-OFF W/ROOT quicker than others, but it works. Amazing job by beaups and co. Thank you again

From fastboot menu make sure phone is plugged in... Open up a command prompt.. change directory to wherever you have your adb & fastboot ... Make sure your recovery file is there also.. from command prompt type "fastboot flash recovery ********.img" replace the ****** with whatever your recovery is named ... This will flash a new recovery

Go to windows folder and copy cmd.exe
Paste cmd.exe where your SDK/ fastboot, adb files are at.
Download a recovery like twrp.
Rename the twrp .IMG file to trwp.img
Copy the img file to the same folder as cmd, adb, and fastboot.
...
Now pull your battery. Re insert battery.
Connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable.
Hold vol down and turn on phone.
Your phone should be in fastboot USB
open the cmd.exe file and type
fastboot boot twrp.img
The command window will display that it sent the info to your phone and reboot your phone into a full unlocked recovery.
From here you want to wipe system, data , and cache.
Then install a 3.6 or 3.0 sense Rom to make sure everything works

Probably a strange coincidence, but I lost all voice and texting capability about 15 minutes after I went s-off. I was on Meanrom ICS and wanted to avoid having to flash kernel to make it work. I can get sprint data working no problem, but can no longer make/receive calls or text. Tried everything I could think of:
Reflash rom
Wipe/Factory reset
Superwipe
Flash stock unlocked rom
Flash OMJ GB rom
Even called sprint to see if they could reset on their end.
No luck. I'm going to try going back to stock, locked s-on and take the phone in for replacement I guess now.

I had the same thing happen to me. I tried to make a call out, and got a recorded voice saying "error 16. please stay on the line while your call is connected to a representative."
30 seconds later a sprint rep was on the line, just verified my personal info to make sure I was authorized to be making changes to my phone (apparently it failed some kind of security test). I told them that I just did a hard reset on my phone and they said it was the most common reason that people got that error. 3 minutes later they fixed my issue. All connectivity restored, phone working 100%.

I wonder if I should call sprint again or just go into the store. Guy gave me an eticket number for a replacement phone. If anyone is interested though, I restored to stock, then used adb to put s-on. Bootloader now shows Locked and S-On with Hboot 1.50. Doesn't appear to be any evidence of my rooting.
EDIT: Thanks to Steal25 and Ausch30, Your antivirus WILL stop the EXE from running. TURN IT OFF, and obviously back on wants your S-OFF. (thanks from AlphaRev, Unrevoked, and TeamWin)
My Original question...
I for some reason when ever i double click on the Revolutionary exploit, the CMD shows maybe for 4 seconds then ends, and i cant get it open a second time with out re-extracting it.
ADB recognizes my phone.
Ive restarted my CPU
I turned off Firewall.
Still no effect.
This also applies to the drivers exploit and fastboot exploit.
Im running Windows Vista
still no luck ?
is it just insta closing when you click on it or is it waiting for device?

Anyone know if there something I forgot to do or is this the normal state of this root method at this point? Today I woke up to my phone saying Please insert Sim card, it was inserted. I restarted, no dice, reinstalled cm 10.2, no dice, wiped factory settings, cache, dalvik cache, then installed Paranoid android, still not working. It won't let me get past the activation screen even if I let it time out and hit skip it literally will just go back to the welcome screen and try to activate again.
I searched around and found that RUU-ing back to stock, locking the bootloader and all that would fix it so I locked the bootloader and am trying to use Ruu but half way through Ruu-ing it takes me to a black screen with a silver HTC logo on it and freezes, then Windows 8 tells me that it is not reconized and Ruu says error 171 which is a USB error. I checked under Device manager and it said unknown device so I'm obviously missing the driver so I go to install htc sync to get the driver and no dice, even if I uninstalled HTC sync and kept the driver it still didn't work. My question is which driver am I suppose to be using?

Evidently resetting it via recovery was the wrong way to do it. I tried it through fastboot and it worked!!! Thank you for all your help!
I'm on my second dna, about a month in total two phones. First one rooted, s-off from stock rom flashed the latest build of cm10.1. Upon boot up the first screen where it says activating it just sat there after about 5 minutes said it couldn't activate. Odd. On my past nexus devices Samsung gs2 and gs3 it would fly past that screen. I restored my back up same thing it said I had no service. Data worked but couldn't make a call or send a text.. Didn't know what to do and luckily Verizon didn't seem to care and swapped it out. So now I'm re-rooted on this phone but to afraid to flash anything cause of what happened. Seems like the same thing that happened to you happened to me.. I don't know how to do the ruu thing and I guess u can reset the phone from boot loader?? What fixed your issue.? I really want to rock stock android but to scared to flash anything. Let's say something happens again do I just get in boot loader and reset that's it nothing else needed?

You welcome!
after RUU >Stock Factory Reset, can be done from the phone... Setting>Back up & Reset> Reset Phone ( is exactly the same process when you go to Bootloader, fastboot and apply /Factory Reset. my bad if you misunderstand my concept , I called Stock Recovery to the Factory image and setting of the phone as it came out of the box to differentiate from Custom Stock Recovery like CWR/TWRP. Glad that u figured it out and have your phone back. Next time i will more specific.

I actually had to downgrade from 8.1 because it was impossible for me to get adb and fastboot working, because of the drivers. I spent the better part of a whole day trying to, its simply broken because of driver signing.

I was trying to avoid that because I have had issues with ubuntu in the past and I also have gotten s-off before without it but I honestly don't remember what way I used but I guess I'll give ubuntu a shot
There's nothing to mess up. Its a live CD and changes nothing on your HD. And nothing to install outside of Moonshine itself.

You are amazing! This worked! thank you so much!
hi everyone.. I recently upgraded my phone to the LG G2, and in doing so I have kept my Droid DNA for the purpose of getting into rooting, and customizing. I have always been fascinated with smart phones , and operating systems, and would like to get to know how to dig into them. I know stock systems very well, and optimize every phone I get up to the stock allowance. Now I want to lift my limitations, and this is the perfect phone to do it with. so if yu could please kindly give me some advice on where to start,. I have been lurking these forums for quite some time, and I find it overwhelming, since I don't know a good starting point. I will continue reading/learning before I tap into this OS, but I just need to know basics, then I will begin to understand the framework..if I have this in the wrong section, im sorry, ill find it if you move it. if you can help , thanks in advance.

I suppose unlocking and S-off should be your starting point, if I understand the question correctly.
If your DNA is on the latest firmware 3.x.x then Rumrunner will get this done for you.
Then install a custom Recovery, ClockWorkMod (CWM) or TeamWinRecoveryProject (TWRP).
Back up your OE Rom by making Nandroid (done in recovery).
After that you can flash whatever ROM you choose.
I have 2 DNAs, on one I have ViperDNA 2.5.0 and on the other CyanogenMod 11.0 nightly.
Above all, have fun :good:
Thanks, Yes... that does answer my question. And I am on firmware 3. Android 4.2.2. Is there any specific advice you can give me to avoid any fatal errors?
btw. what lead me to create a this thread, was that I heard I need rumrunner , so I went to the website, DL the file. after extracting the file for my device, and executing soju.exe, when it ask if im aware of the implications or whatever "type yes or no" when I type yes, It just keeps asking me over and over lol. so I got no where. so I did some digging and found tons of different threads ,, some of which say use this file.... or that tool kit, or this program.... or that method, some that seem to no longer works etc. so it just confused me on what I need to do with my particular phone. 4.2.2 firmware 3 sense 5.0

This http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559232 should be all you need for unlock and S-off.
This http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994662 is the Recovery I use, TWRP.
When using Rumrunner you must follow the instructions EXACTLY.
Make sure your drivers are working properly.
Make sure your device is recognized by ADB and Fastboot.
Rumrunner assumes you have studied, and are familiar with ADB and Fastboot commands.
If not read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=879701
Make sure your firewall and any anti virus are disabled.
Enjoy :fingers-crossed:
Make sure you use a capital y when typing yes, everything needs to be exact.

Wanting to do the same thing
So I am also trying to do this same thing, on same firmware and sense versions, but when rumrunner gets to the very first step were it reboots into the bootloader, it never gets past the waiting for fastboot stage. My phone just sits at the bootloader menu and the countdown runs out. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like either your ADB or Fastboot are not working properly.
Fix them and you should be fine.

That's not entirely true. You have to disable driver signature enforcement in Windows 8.x then install the ADB driver. Microsoft doesn't want anyone unknowingly installing drivers by accident. They make it so that you know what you are doing and doing it on purpose.

Got it!
I did all the same things on my Windows 7 laptop and it worked perfectly the first time. It really was Windows 8.1 that was the problem. I'll be sure to follow that link and make sure all the rest of my drivers work in the future. Thanks.
I just purchased the Sprint variant of the HTC One Max and decided to unlock the bootloader to root it. I followed the instructions up to the point where I have to have to run the fastboot command in CMD. The example shows the CMD changing its directory to \Android. When I try to do this, I'm given the error: "The system cannot find the path specified." I tried just doing fastboot command, but came back with "fastboot is not recognized..."
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. Android SDK, Java Runtime, and HTC Sync are all installed and updated.
Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the quick reply.
This worked, but when I attempt to run the command for the fastboot I get an error saying "The program can't start because AdbWinApi.dll is missing from your computer."
Was this something that was supposed to be installed from one of the Android SDK installs?

It was in the sdk\platform-tools folder.
Does the command line have to be directed to the folder containing the fastboot application file? Inside said platform-tools folder is the fastboot file as well as the ApbWinApi.dll file.

Yep! Unlocked the bootloader successfully! Now, I'm trying to Root and the instructions I'm following are good, but I'm stuck again - It says to run CMD and use the command "adb devices." It comes back with nothing found, yet, according to the instructions my phone's serial number should be listed. I placed the Superuser.zip file in the phone's storage (per requisite) and tried to run the command with the phone on normally and again in the bootloader.
No luck... Suggestions?
Edit: USB Debugging wasn't on... Trying again...

If you are unlocked you can simply download a custom recovery for your phone into your fastboot directory and boot your phone to boot loader (fastboot) mode. Flash your recovery using your appropriate fastboot command. Then boot to your new custom recovery and flash the su.zip you copied to the phone from recovery.

Would that solve my next problem? (I'm such a sputz)
I'm rooted, but I can't uninstall anything with Titanium Backup. The last time this happened on my S3 I was told to install SuperSU and install updated binaries. I did that, but when I reboot and go back into SuoerSU it acymts as if it never happened. Apps I uninstalled are still present, too.
Would S-offing solve this?
Edit: Also, I get an annoying pop-up when I start the phone up that says vDN client has failed. Even before I unlocked and rooted. Any way to stop this?

You need to flash an insecure boot.img to disable system write protection. S-off would allow you to recover your phone using both signed and unsigned ruu. The advantage of that is when you hose your phone and there's not a current ruu for the version your phone is on - s-on user would be screwed because you cannot downgrade. Just one of many reasons.
The fc problem I'm not sure. If you aren't using that app you can disable it in the stock app manager. Same goes for stuff you might normally remove with tibu. Be warned too that future otas will likely fail if system apps are missing.

i have noticed someelse posting about the vDN client failing.. it your providers bloatware if i remember correctly and i think @dottat has a good suggestion! disabled it
So I somehow lost root privileges... After S-offing, I was asked to update the SU binary through the Superuser app (not SuperSU) and I did so. When the install finished, I went into Titanium Backup and was told I'm not rooted.
Went back into Superuser and it didn't prompt for an update, but SuperSU did. Attempted and failed.
Went into recovery and tried to recover root - no luck.
HALP!

Don't use Superuser by ChainsDD anymore.. Personally I would love to continue to use it but he is basically no longer supporting his Superuser app and binary and hasn't updated it in a very long time. SuperSU by Chainfire is constantly being updated therefore made to work with all current versions of Android.. Quite frankly it's all the same basically anyways I just liked the skull and cross bone look lol... Chainfire is a monster as well and has a ton of root related apps and cool things going on. ChainsDD I guess passed the torch on to Chainfire???
