As you can see from the title, the phone app "Dialer" launches very slow every time i leave the app for more than 5 minutes. Actually its not just the dialer app but also i noticed that with some apps like messaging, it takes around 3 seconds to launch. It started to annoy me specially because, first i make calls a lot and second because i know that i am using 1.5GHz dual core processor "one of the reasons that made me buy this phone". i have tried the galaxy phones many times specially the s2 and the note and i never see that specially that their processor is technically slower. Does anybody notice that? and is there a way to solve this problem?i don't care about other apps, i just want the dialer to launches quickly like it does with the Galaxy phones and any 1.5GHz dual core processor.
Now i am using ICS rooted with locked bootloader. Still no difference than Gingerbread. still launches the app very slow. Any suggestions, Ideas?? please!
I agree. In GB there was no such issue, but the lag is very noticeable in ICS.
Very Annonying indeed.
I AGREE
there has to be a way to tweak this... some dev has to find it
Factory reset.
And don't use any ram optimizers or apps killer.

i did factory reset like a thousand times. the problem is not new with ICS , GB too was little slow with the "phone" application except that now ICS, its more noticeable. and BTW i dont use any ram optimizers or apps killer at all, actually never had! and for rooting the only apps i use are SetCPU, Root Explorer and titanium backup!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1745668
i checked the stock ICS dialer that was posted in there but i didnt like it.
i then downloaded the EXdialer from the market with the black ICS theme and its FAST.
This lag in Phone drove me crazy so much that I rooted (locked bl) my phone in attempt to improve the performance.
After freezing dozens of apps for more RAM, strangely now my Phone app launches a lot faster... not sure if it is a memory issue or that in the process of reflashing I got a smoother ROM.... somehow.
I also installed the ICS Dialer as mentioned above which is very fast. I am still using the SE Phone app, but keep the ICS Dialer just in case the lag come back.
I have just bought an S3 and I am actually quite disappointed in it's performance.
I have an S2 (Running stock ICS) and my S3 (Running stock JB) is quite noticeably slower, with terrible lag.
I am just wondering if this is normal, surely this should out perform an S2?
The 2 main area where it is considerably slower is opening up my contacts and MMS app.
From clicking the contacts icon it takes about 2 seconds to actually load the contacts, and the MMS app takes about the same time to load.
Also when opening my app drawer it is buggy and laggy when scrolling through.
I notice that I also have little to no free RAM, yes I know how android works and how it utilises RAM but it doesn't seem right to me.
Anyone else having this problem?
I'm also running JB which should be smoother than ICS!
The firmware version I'm using is XXDLJ4
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
you are either doing something wrong or holding a faulty handset, apart from the delay in opening contacts app after heavy usage, s3 will absolutely smoke s2.

Thanks for such a prompt reply!!
It totally smokes my S2 in benchmark tests but in real usage it doesn't.
Is there any way of checking if it's faulty?
Like maybe an app that checks all 4 cores are running properly and GPU is functioning properly?

try disabling media service, its one among the reasons for possible lag, disable power saving mode if enabled
turn off Facebook sync and ripple effect
this helped me to get free ram

mine is the same it just feels slow and laggy there's a one x in the house as well and it blows away the s3.
my s3 running ics was unusable jb helped but did not fix the phone completely I am very disappointed with it, but also stuck with it.

Im shocked. How is this possible?? I bought my phone 10days ago, till now I have not seen any lag anywhere except for the contacts and phone. It will be fixed though. Moreover it fly's with the JB update, I love scrolling through the screens its damn smooth.
I doubt if you got the correct handset . Surely something is wrong. Was it like this from the first day???

The screen scrolling is fine, it's nice and smooth. It's the opening up of contacts, phone and MMS that is really slow.
I've got the latest UK JB update so it should be a lot snappier, in my opinion.
And it's definitely a S3, no doubt there. Yup it was slow right from the get go.
It's the crazy high RAM use that is annoying the hell out of me
Oh, Then go to developer options and select background process limit to 4.That should help, but if you are freaking out about the RAM, then don't cause that's how android uses the ram.
I am currently Using Liquid smooth ROM (AOSP) . I have no contacts or phone lag. Use it if you like AOSP
Use an ASOP or miui Rom! JB onS3 is good but Sammy needs to improve.

yes your s3 should blow your s2 away and NO you shouldn't have to tweak or remove apps, live wallpaper etc.
First try a factory reset...best and simplest advice for performance issues.
Then, and only then should you need to try to find out what apps or settings are causing problems (to be honest no settings should retard performance that badly).
Then...and its a longer shot is a faulty rom installation which a reset won't fix. In that case you'll need to reflash DLJ4 from a reliable source, here on XDA, samfirmware, checkfus etc.
If still problems then your issues are hardware related and you need to visit your provider who'll have access to a maintenance centre, or even samsung themselves...assuming you're still running stock. If not you need to use a guide to restore your phone status to unmodified and a flash a stock rom first.
Good luck

you are not alone.......http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1958171 ....and this is really annoying
Mine is REALLY fast. More responsive than ics for sure.
Full wipe, stock and..
That's it
Also loading a list with 50 or 100 contacts and some having photos can not be immediate unless its already in the cache..
Definetly do a factory reset, usually fixes most of your problems.
If its being all sluggish i would suggest running "Paranoid Android [ROM]" on it, which is amazing. Or if your looking for something lightweight go, "SuperNexus".
Either way, also go to " settings > dev options " and then change all the Animation Scale (From 1x) to 0.5x it will make the animations faster.
Your phone is not faulty.
The stock contacts and sms app made by samsung are too heavy and indeed open very slow. You should try exDialer or jelly bean sms app which can be found on Play store.

I only notice slowness with power saving mode enabled. Make sure its not and it should. I would use roms as close to stock as possible, IMO. Flashing and using aosp amd miui like others have stated will probably cause more niggly bits of annoyance then rectify current issues youd only replace them with new ones. Unless of course you have a rom addiction and flash every second day like me

No problems here, but have changed a lot.
Disabled S Voice, froze all Samsung applications. Same with services like remote controls, tracking etc. Deleted bin/kiesexe since I never use KIES and the extra ram is handy to have (ROM cooks, here is an idea, ask users if they want KIES on install, if not delete it)!.
Install a good kernel and try running a SQL optimization script to speed up databases. Lastly don't touch supercharger etc to get more free ram (that is wasted ram). It'll slow down Contracts and the Dialer since it removes them from ram. They are loaded at startup for a reason.
Also lastly, turn off unneeded Startups
You should be able to find a list of unneeded services and tasks, somewhere on the forum
You'll understand why, when you look at the list of unneeded bloatware, services etc running, why it is slow. shame on Samsung.
Swyped on GT-I9300 - XXDLJ4 - Siyah kernel 1.7b1 - JKay framework -
try wiping the cache partition in recovery mode. worked for me
The way my GP 4.0 works is odd...It's as if after every reboot, the player has a certain amount of fuel (and no I'm not referring to the battery). After usage, that fuel gets burned down and the player starts running sluggishly and eventually either freezes up and forces me to do a forced shut down or it reboots itself. I usually can't keep the thing on without a reboot for longer than 3 days. It's not a major issue, but it makes playing games rough because sometimes in the middle of a game, the player just freezes up and reboots. The battery typically never goes beyond 100 degrees F, unless I'm in a hot car or something.
Anyone else got this problem? Any suggestions? I've heard of something called Lagfix that does something like trimming or something of the sort...Yeah, noob here. Would that fix me up? Running gingerbread 2.3.5 stock rom and kernel.

try a factory reset and dont install anything after.
if it doesnt seem to hang, reinstall your apps slowly, one by one to see which one is causing the problem
Your player is using to much ram so it's going to restart. Use the task manager to kill any app you aren't using.

2 problems with that. 1. in the task manager, no tasks are seen running. I almost always have around 70 mb of ram free no matter what. 2. if I use a task killer (such as advanced task killer), I can kill apps that are running (such as the ebay app...Not sure why that even runs in background), but they come back on within seconds....do I just need to uninstall apps?
I will suggest you try using advance task manager to monitor your applications, rather then the system's task manager.

Are you using a custom rom? You shouldn't have 70mb all the time. You should have at least 162mb when it just starts booting up, and then 100mb- 120mb when using it. ADW Launcher is kinda heavy on memory. Try Holo Launcher or one that doesn't use a ton of ram. I remember on mine it was Go Launcher using too much ram, and it was causing it to stutter. Also I suggest uninstall (or just doing a complete restore) some of the apps. Our players suck with managing ram imo lol.

Stock rom and stock kernel. Would custom ones be better?
I do get the around 160 mb of ram when booting up. Actually, I do have around 90 mb of ram available after the boot up. Well, the thing is, is that adwlauncher has almost made it all better. It just runs so much smoother than touchwiz and i like it a lot. However, I can try another I suppose. Well that sucks. Should I start using a task killer and having it auto kill or something? I mean I don't really wanna uninstall youtube, or ebay, but I guess I could uninstall some other stuff.
Okay, so last night I uninstalled some apps that according to advanced task killer were running in the background. I've also uninstalled Lookout just to free up some more ram. now I get about 90-100 mb of ram when idle, and things are working all right for now. I'll report how it performs after a day or two...It's just a shame that the galaxy player has so little ram that I'm forced to uninstall some apps that won't even give me the option to stop them from running the background.

Custom Kernels, and roms help the player a lot imo. I would at least flash a custom kernel, because it boots the total ram from 342 to 352mb. Yeah I think that since you have a lot of apps installed it is bogging down the player. Uninstall the apps you don't need, or rarely use. I know I wished samsung would have properly upgraded our players. Instead we got the 3.6, and 4.2 which do some things better, but other things worse. They made the 5.8 but to me it's not worth the money.

Okay so unfortunately, I just got another crash/reboot. I was playing Draw something with my sister when suddenly it began to hang for about 4 seconds and then just reboot. This is the normal crash I used to get, and always get after about 3 days of having the thing on and using it. I had plenty of open ram when this happened. before I opened draw something, I had about 100 mb of ram.
Uninstalling apps has cut down on the amount of lag and hangs I get, but I still get this stupid reboot deal after a while...Is there any way to make this stop? I mean I could just do a factory reset, but I almost don't even think it's worth having to redo everything just to fix rebooting once every 2 or 3 days.

If your galaxy player is rooted I would try installing a custom kernel and see what happens. Because 1) It gives you the ability to overclock to 1.2 ghz (If you buy tegrak or set cpu you can overclock to 1.3 or even 1.5ghz). This helps with lag and memory issues from my experience, and 2) You can make a backup of your files on your device using ClockWorkMod, so you don't have to redo everything if factory resetting doesn't work.
But most likely I think you are going to have to just do a factory reset. Usually that fixes the memory problem since it resets everything on the player. But be warned flashing kernels and roms does void your warranty and can mess up your player if not done right. However, there's tons of tutorials on how to do it. If you like it stock, , iJimaniac has made a custom rom called R.E.D.D it uses the stock kernel with a modified version of the stock rom.
Also do you mind taking a screenshot or picture of your taskmanger and apps?

It is indeed rooted. However, can't I already overclock to 1.2 ghz? I mean I have tegrak and it lets me overclock to that already. I don't even mind the CPU speed now, it's just the random reboots I get that bother me. And if it needs to be said, I really cannot remember if my player has always done this...
So unless flashing a kernel or rom is actually gonna make my player run smoother (I've heard that stock stuff runs smoothest because it's made for that specific device), I don't really see a need to do it. I'm perfectly fine with the way it is stock...Just not fine with the occasional bits of lag I get (temple run is basically not playable on my player, because even the slightest hang will screw you up) and the stupid reboots.
Sure. You want a screenshot of advanced task killer open (showing all the apps that are currently running)? As for apps, how do you want me to get a picture of all those? It'd take several pictures because I'd have to scroll through the apps list and take multiple pictures.

Don't touch the kernel if you are inexperienced in such things you will just screw the rom up... go into developement settings and overclock your cpu to 768mhz for a start. governer... smartass v2 should be fine. use a task manager to kill background apps etc. there are many things you can do but remember that 4.0 has higher requirements than our phone has so performance will always be an issue... if u want have a look into swap partitions, cpu overclocking, cpu governers, I/O Schedulers, Caching etc... there is so much to tweaking performance to get the most out of your device
When I stop apps that r running, they just come back within 5 seconds. Also, i am already at 768mhz. 768 mhz has made it a little faster, but some apps wont launch and just stop when i launch them. Is there a way to get them to work?

I really would suggest you change roms mate, either CyanogenMod 7.2 or 10.1
10.1 is Android 4.2 and 7.2 is 2.3.7
naturally 7.2 is fastest and most stable.
But why is it that some apps work and others dont?
How about increasing the ram? Can I do that?

You cannot increase the RAM like in a computer as it is attached to the motherboard directly. That link describes using a swap partition on the sd that acts kind of like ram but it is not ram itself, it is slower than ram and less efficent however swap can be useful. I have tried swap and noticed no real difference in performance at all but you could sure try it... just remember to enable swap in the cyanogenmod settings otherwise the partition will do nothing and u lose valuable sd card space

Use seeder app set to aggresive, no need to oc just set gov to performance. If you not use any ramscript use romtool box go to memory manager try optimum preset. And also go to sd booster to boost your sd speed cache.

Honestly, make an effort to purchase a new phone. I've had a i5000 foir almost a year and sometimes I almost went crazy due to its slowness.
You can try using a (fast) sdcard as supplementary memory, but it will be still slow. And no way to use a CyanogenMod later than 7.2. Stick with this at minimum.
But you can find really good bargains at ebay. Please consider it.
hi
i have galaxy s3 with JB 4.1.2 rooted I9300 rom Poland
and my problems start
1 . Even after cleaning and after WIPE high fine
He first 600 of 833MB
After a few minutes he 720 phone starts to feel like a slow
I go to games and everything works great no problem
But I hear songs song stuck in another and back again lodged a second
The battery runs down very quickly because of the high RAM
2. My alarm does not always ring
Once I woke up and saw it only vibrate
Even once someone called me and was just a vibrate
He calls me back and then have a song
3. Someone calls me take a few minutes to load the contact's name
4. My friend sent me a picture that SMS is not via software or something.
MMS.
So he sent and I do not get the picture he sent me.
If he sends only standard message I get. But if a picture is "MMS" I do not get.
Why?
and more problems!
i just want to back to ICS Seriously this version was only one problem the device heats up quickly and that's it.
Everything works great for me there is no problem. The device was amazing.
But in JB device always stuck full of problems
Do you have a solution to all these problems?
Do not tell me to delete just do WIPE or go to CM10 or something
Or you saying wait Android 5?
Sounds like you may have a bad app or bad something else. I have been on JB since the leaks and they are awesome compared to the ICS versions.
But you may want to download the most recent version and install it clean.
And wiping everything is a good thing as it cleans out phone and lets the user only reinstall the needed apps. Well for me at least

Sounds like you may have a bad app or bad something else. I have been on JB since the leaks and they are awesome compared to the ICS versions.
But you may want to download the most recent version and install it clean.

ever time i change my rom i do full wipe "everthing like new phone buyin now"
and i have backup for titanium backup ok
and all my app from google play i buy apps beecause I support developers
and i now what app is good or bad.
OK if your using titanium back up, only restore the app not the data.
There could be some old data that is messing it up. Like I said, its actually better to start all over and redownload all apps and start new.

Can't say I share your experiences. Jelly bean is fine.
Do a full wipe and just don't restore any data or app...
That should fix all your problems

JB rom is pretty fine according my experiences, however if you are not satisfied with the stock one try a modded rom.
Regarding the RAM I wouldn't worry at all. Android takes care of the problem and will kill apps before ram gets overfilled as far a I understood. RAM I guess isn't the problem for any lags. I recommend to try different Kernels istead, Boeffla for example which works pretty fine with my rom.
Also battery drain is not a RAM problem it is caused by applications working in the background which suck the battery. There is a nice program in the App store called Greenify that allows you to fine tune this.
Format sdcard system data cache preload .
Flash whatever firmware you want via Odin .
Do not install apps or restore TB .
Test for one week problems then return to service .
