i purchased my htc evo lte last month and as soon as i activated it i foolishly recieved the ota updates from sprint and updated to 4.1.1
then i proceeded to unlock my phone using htc-dev. currently i'm running meanbean 3.07 (the bomb rom as i call it), but i'm not s-off and i think i should try but i really dont want to mess anything up and i'd like this to only take maybe 6 hours instead of 2 days lol anyone who's read my previous post knows i'm kinda new at this stuff and don't have a lot of time so i would GREATLY aprecieate any help. i'm in the process of researching this now, but i thought i'd post this on the chance anyone out there knows the answer, process, and/or link to do this properly without bricking my phone. i know all this is probably more info than necessary, but i want to be precise and give as much relevant information that would make it easier to help out.
Again, thank you for any help at all. and Captian Throwback, i'd apprecieate your help if your out there. I'm not looking to be breastfed, just maybe point me in the right direction. especially since everything i've read, you are the man that has made unlocking and s-off possible. I've seen your signature on your post, and you have a link for s-off but my prl version is different as well as a few other things. also, i'm using windows xp. will that matter?????????? the more i read (and i've been reading alllll morning), the more confused i get. thank you for all your contributions.

The whole procedure is there. They say windows xp 32-bit might work but is not supported. The only parts of your info that matter are the hboot and if you took the 3.16 OTA. Since you did, you'll have to do the BabyRacun step. The unlimited io team is good with support if you visit their IRC.
As a suggestion, I would highly recommend using an ubuntu live cd. In case your phone gets stuck in a softbrick, you'll have to use ubuntu to run
the unbricking tool RacunHunter. If you need any help or have more questions, I'm sure people here will help or you can PM me for more help.
And the whole thing is a lot simpler than it sounds, just make sure you don't rush in blindly.
hey thanks a bunch for responding.
first, this just looks scary as hell to me lol.
2nd, i'm a noob and not much time but i'm trying to do this with 3 kids constantly yelling at me but i'm taking some me time lol
3rd, i've looked at this site and yeah i'm really not wanting to rush into this blindly. is it better to unroot and downgrade the hboot, or just give babyracun a try with windows xp???
any other advice or pertinent information i should consider???
also, do i need to uninstall meanbean and go back to stock? i'm really confused about that.
I've never tried downgrading and I'm not even sure it will work on you hboot. It's best to use DirtyRacun.
In the process of getting s-off, one of the steps is to relock your device and flash the 3.15 ruu. This will completely put you back at Stock so you don't have to do it before starting the procedure. And make sure to back up ALL of your data. Theres a chance this will also wipe your sd card.
Also, any particular reason why you won't use an ubuntu live disc?

You don't have to worry about firmware and radios yet. Since you took the 3.16 OTA, you are already at the newest ones. When a new OTA comes out and if you get s-off, it's as simple as putting a firmware package on your sd card and booting to bootloader.
An ubuntu live disc is an .iso image that you burn to a cd/dvd, then boot your computer from it. You choose to try it and it'll boot ubuntu 12.04 32-bit. This OS has all the drivers for android and firefox installed so you can go online and follow the instructions. You just download the DirtyRacun files, fire up a terminal, cd to its directory and run the commands. When you are done, you take out the disc and boot into your regular windows installation. IMO this is better than gambling on an OS that might or might not work.

Quick question from my EVO... Probably obvious answers but I wanna make this go as smooth as possible.
I have the latest 3.16 ota but doesn't this process knock you back down to 3.15? And how do I know when there's a new update?
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Actually, you're right, this might put you back to the older firmware but I'm not 100% sure. But like I said, you just need to go to the firmware thread, download the full firmware zip, and flash it through the bootloader. You can also check there when there's a new ota to see if it came with new firmware or not.

Thank you.
And if you (or anyone else out there) have any more advice or suggestions... Keep them coming!

Just make sure you have everything prepared. Nandroid and all of your sd card contents backed up. Uninstall all htc drivers and programs and reboot. Install the drivers from unlimited io and reboot. Make sure your phone is fully charged. The whole procedure takes like 30 minutes or so but if you soft brick it may take longer. And in case you do (you shouldn't if you follow directions) make sure you have a blank cd/dvd to make an ubuntu live disc for racunhunter.
And you're going to need your unlock token from HTCdev so make sure you have access to that. Also, when you finally go s-off, there's a chance you'll get an error16 when trying to make a call. Just stay on the line and give your info to the sprint rep and they'll get your phone working again.
Good luck.

From what I can tell you have not taken the 3.16 OTA your baseband and PRI indicate you are still on 3.15 firmware
Your build number says 3.16.651.3 because you are on MeanBean it is based on the new OTA
So when you are ready to S-OFF choose the 3.15 RUU I don't think the BabyRacun part is needed

Yeah I kept seeing that too and it was confusing me. The last ota I took was beginning of January.
So since I'm on 3.15, do I need to uninstall MeanBean? Or are the instructions there for that?
And also want steps should I take after s-off (firmware, radios, ect)?

Got another question...
Can I just download ubuntu to my computer or is it better to use a burned discuss?
And I'm not sure if I have usb 2.0 will usb 1.0 work?
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Majority of pcs and laptops have usb 2. No matter how you decide to use Linux, it still needs to be burned to a disc and either run as live distro or installed to pc.
The rom you are on doesn't matter. The process reverts you to completely stock 3.15 in preparation for the DirtyRacun exploit.
Don't worry about firmware after s-off yet. It's easy so don't worry about it. Just concentrate on s-off. After s-off you can just nandroid back to what you're running now and then upgrade radios and all other firmware if you want.
For ubuntu, you don't have to install it on your computer. It's easy to just download the iso, burn it to a disc, and run it from there.
And as far as I know, the only usb that won't work are hubs and 3.0. So 1.0 or 2.0 should be fine.

Choose either 12.10 or 12.04. Just make sure its 32bit. Choose how much to donate or just click "Not now, take me to the download". This should get you the iso. Just use imgburn or your preferred burning program and burn it to your cd/dvd. Stick it in your disc drive and reboot. It will give you the option to try ubuntu. This won't touch your windows installation.
Hey gang -
Working with my EVO 3D (Virgin Mobile) - and I'm stuck in a world of S-ON. The pre-requisites state that for the S-OFF Wire trick to work you must be on Windows 7 or less and be using specific version of HTC drivers. I'm running Windows 8, the specific version of HTC drivers recommended (HTC Driver 3.0.0.007) will not work in Windows 8. Needless to say I've not been able to get the wire trick to work and I'm "still sober". I've had very little success trying roms that will work and be happy with an S-ON phone. Until I decide to downgrade a machine back to Windows 7... what roms should I look for that I'll actually be able to use without bootlooping? So far the Midnight rom worked but is incredibly battery hungry (10 minutes of facebooking drops the battery 20-25%) - and today I installed MeanRom which seems to be doing better in the battery department.
Just looking for friendly advice... I've kinda given up on the wire trick for now.

Are you on the Sprint 1.5 hboot?
WFTN is not going to boot with the stock 1.57 VM hboot.

Yes, sadly I'm on 1.57 hboot. This has been quite the thorn in my side.
Only one i know is Harmonia from andriodforums evo v 4g sections.
Not sure if you can run Wild for the night, but its my rom of choice but im s-off.
Looking at Harmonia now - thanks for the suggestion - I'm running MeanRom since last night.
MeanRom's battery performance is better than the last one I was using, MidnightRom.

The requirements for the JuopuntBear wire trick have been changed to Ubuntu Linux and they no longer support Windows at all. There's a live CD linked from the unlimited.io website that can be booted without having to actually install Linux so you might want to give that a try.
I have a guide here for root/S-OFF that might work with Windows 8 if you use this guide to install the drivers.
ramjet73
Thanks ramjet - I'm looking at that info now. It sure is a lot to consume.
Most guides all say "click this post" for reference, that has a link within to click another post, which links to another post... lol, gets to where I've got 10 tabs open in no time... not complaining at all, just a bit time consuming to ensure all the info has been digested...
I'm having fits!
I followed the guide... got the RUU installed and configured.... unlocked the bootloader (again)... flashed the SU.... now when I try to run ControlBear it won't complete, saying it can't transfer the backups - looking at the JuopunutBear website it says that error is due to a custom rom or htc sync installed.... I don't have htc sync and the rom is the RUU.... I'm really confused now...

If you are using my guide, restart controlbear.exe and check the screen for superuser access prompts that need to approved. That's usually why the secondary backup fails.

Well I'll be........
Guess it would help if I actually looked at the screen, huh?
Well... I'm happy to report that after following your guide, ramjet, that I'm officially S-OFF!!! (after only the 2nd try) - I'm a happy man tonight!! Thank you sir...
I'm also refreshed that I was able to ask my questions and receive the answers and help I needed without a "xda smackdown" that tends to follow such newbie questions. For this I'm grateful.
Installed my first AOKP rom, TeamDIRT_DirtyUnicorns_V1.2, and its bootlooping after the install... never made it to the setup screen.
Ugh....
Have you installed another hboot? 1.50 and below to boot aosp based ROMs. Either do the PG86IMG.zip method, or my new favorite, search XDA for fastboot commander. I had to use it for my gfs evo v 4g because I couldn't get the pg86img to work because of the cid. I recommend 1.50.5050 jbear or 1.04 eng.

No problem.
Since you are S-OFF now you can just flash the firmware only updates from both the VM OTA's (November and March). The November update is in this post and the March update is in this post. Just flash them in sequence from the bootloader.
ramjet73
If I use fastboot commands to push those updates, can I rename them or do they have to remain named PG86IMG.zip?
I have so many different people telling me so many different things. Okay, here is the information about my phone:
1. HTC EVO 4G LTE, rooted, unlocked, TWRP 2.5.0.0.
2. It is S-on.
3. Hboot is 2.09.
4. It is 3.16.
Now, some people are telling me I need to be S-off and need to downgrade in order to put CM-10 on as I have tried to put CM-10 on and it just sits at the splash screen and nothing else happens. Still others tell me that if I fastboot, it should just go on with no problems. I have windows 8 and Linux Mint Cinnamon on my system at the moment. Can someone, anyone help me please? I want to get ride of the bloatware and have my phone be what I want it to be.
Thanks in andvance!
In order to run CM in your current setup YES you need to get S-OFF so you can downgrade your touch panel drivers.
As for removing bloat you can click the ROMCleaner link in my sig and choose no-sense while using a compatible sense rom

+1 just go s-off and be done with it. It will take you less than 5 minutes and no more worries afterwards.

I want to root my phone badly and install cyanagenmod 10.2 on my rezound. There's very little if any chance of bricking unless you go S-Off. Keep it S-On and you'll always be able to recover to stock as long as you have a PC (something that works with Fastboot such as Windows or Ubuntu) and the latest RUU
Thank you, I've read that multiple times, but should I wait till I go for a upgrade? Or would you say root it sometime soon? And is it possible on mac though... I have the SDK, and all the necessary stuff on my mac, or at least I think...

Really it depends on the hboot and radios his phone is on, right? Bc say he were on the global leak 2.27 hboot with 2.22 radios he could still apply that ruu. However if on 2.28 hboot with 2.23 radios there technically is no official ruu so would need have be s_off..

he could fastboot to 2.28 without that provided OTA fille...ruu is actually an exe program... but i suggest against it honestly....but if downgrading at all requires s-off....he can root without s-off and flash roms....so long as he does use s-on instructions....(which to be honest s-on users have a harder time flashing custom roms for the reason of having to fastboot all the time)
Plus S-Off is so easy now... No wire trick

I guess what the OP needs is some words of encouragement so let me just say this : unlocking the bootloader through HTC dev will not brick your phone, flashing a custom recovery will not brick your phone, flashing a custom rom will not brick your phone, getting the most out of your rezound will not brick your phone. Btw happy new year everybody

Sorry about that, I've read so many forum's, but I just haven't gotten to do it, or afraid of doing it, I know unlock bootloader and so on so forth... But after that... I know the HTC developers website provides a way for you to unlock the boot loader which allows you to install a custom ROM but I've seen other people do it differently, I've heard mac88 has a great one on rooting HTC rezound, but its supposed to have pictures but it was taken down... Or at least the pictures and I suck at reading it and doing it sometimes... I do better by seeing... Any help for a noob guys... Please help..

Here ya go! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2585885 Much easier than the Juopunut s-off which requires Linux and the use of a wire to short out contacts on your phone.
Edit: Of course you need to be unlocked and rooted, and have a custom rom and kernel already installed to use this method. So it may not be easier for you.

There are a lot of good threads to look at in HTC Rezound > Rezound Android development. Here are a few to start.

Thank you I got into the boot loader unlock, but haven't done it yet, I went back in to make sure I have everything backed up, and when installing CWM does it back up your stock Rom onto a SD card? I've read things on it but don't really understand...sorry still a noob...

It appears you have a lot more reading to do before you start making these changes to your phone. If not careful you can turn it into a useless brick. I would suggest reading through as many development threads as you can to get more comfortable.
BTW, you won't be doing any of this from your Mac. Find a Windows or Linux computer to use.

To run the RUU from Windows 7 64 bit, be sure to install latest HTC sync manager and connect phone to finalize driver installation. Then try again.
It ain't nothing but a G thing baby... Lg G3 LGSL990

I assumed that if the phone rooted and adb and fastboot work than the drivers were installed? Some times the ruu comes up and ask me to install with recomended settings
Htc ruu won't work without sync manager, period.

Also, if your bootloader is already unlocked, you will have to relock it for RUU to work.

Actually, I don't have HTC Sync installed, and it surely works for me. Sync manager allows for the drivers to be installed.
Now having issues getting s-off! Any idea?

Some more info would be helpful. What ROM are you on? What Hboot do you currently have, and what is your radio (firmware) version?
It's important to provide as much information from the start so we can help you. There are currently five ways to gain S-off on the HTC EVO 4G LTE depending upon what software/firmware you currently have.

Ya that would help wouldn't it
Software 3.17.651.5 710RD
Factory rooted rom (flashed su 2.01 zip)
Hboot 2.09 0000
I tried rum runner and it gets to about 10 runs and stops
I did realize I don't have busybox but the installers crash and the phone reboots

Ill need to check this one out. Thank you
no dice! still s-on
if it is of any concern my s-on shows RL after it?
Why don't you just do the RUU back to factory stock and try it from the beginning? It seems like it might save you some time over trying to troubleshoot what is actually wrong.
Try rumrunner again. That's what finally worked for me one time. Rumrunner didn't take the first time and it didn't make a difference running it a second or third time. Firewater didn't work either, but I had success when I went back to rumrunner.
My worthless theory is that, for whatever reason, RR wasn't able to complete a specific critical step, but that FW was able to handle it. But then FW encountered issues on a subsequent step. Going back to RR worked because, this time, FW already took care of the task that RR couldn't do the first time around.
Of course I don't have a stack of evo's sitting around waiting to be s-offed, so I didn't get much of a chance to test my theory. I seem to remain s-off now even after ruu.
Remember to wipe well. It will help prevent a stinky ROM as well as awkward social situations.
I ruu to the one that had sence 5 and then rooted and ran Firewater (2 TIMES) and I'm good! Thank you for all your help
