Hello,
I'm strongly considering getting one of the above, once the second one is available. The fact that the noteay have a stronger processor is a plus.
What should I be looking out for in these devices? What are niggles that would prompt me to check and potentially need to replace if found? Software bugs? Construction quality?
Overall use is going to be internet, everyday calendar, notes etc.
Thanks in advance!

it is neither lighter nor thinner , but has a faster processor and a pen
If you're price conscious then the original tab is a great buy. Also consider that accessories for the 10.1 Note will be at a premium while a ton of stuff for the original tab are on clearance.
Wait for the note... The pen is surprisingly great (on the note 5.3 anyway), and the faster processor will be a nice upgrade, because the Tegra 2 in the original 10.1 tab isn't great... Very laggy... Yes it's better with cm9, but still not that good.
I have a gt-p7510 Galaxy tab 10.1 and I like it, but if I didn't already have it, I would definitely wait for the note 10.1.
Thanks for the replies guys. Really appreciated.
I too hate the lag and on video reviews of the note I thought it was very slow so good thing they are improving the processor.
I always wondered if you could use a stylus on the original tab. What is the upgrade that makes the note souh better with the stylus from the tab?

If you're planning to use it for note-taking, the note 10.1 is an easy choice. For everything else, you'll want to consider whether the faster processor is worth the price difference.
I would also wait on the note, even though it won't be out for a good while. I got the galaxy tab 10.1 a few weeks ago and am loving it so far. But this won't stop me from getting the note 10.1 the moment it becomes available (will have to sell this tab then lol). The biggest thing, for me personally, is the pen; stylus functionality isn't the best thing in the world when it comes to the original tab 10.1 even though it may be functional. But thats all it is, functional, not amazing or practical when it comes to taking notes (student's perspective). Of course the processor bump just makes it sweeter, I'm just hoping the price isn't too steep.
Would the Note have the same touch capability as the Tab if not using the pen? If so, then it was be a great plus!

Yes the stylus isn't required. The touch capability would be the same as the current tab, if anything better (highly unlikely) when it comes to using your fingers. The stylus just adds the extra dimension of certain apps that take advantage of that, such as iAnnotate PDF, Zenbrush, etc. And lets not forget the superb precision the pen will bring when it comes to drawing and taking notes. If Samsung puts in an AMOLED HD screen (Ok I'm seriously asking for too much with this suggestion) this tablet will be beyond perfect, IMO.
If price isn't a concern, I'd say wait for the Note. Why buy last year's model when the new one is right around the corner? The processor bump will probably be enough to justify the price difference, but I'm happy enough with my Tab to sit this round out.
as I have mentioned in other threads my experience with 3g model has not been good, as in Samsung stock experience.
The hardware is good, there is no denying of that of course, and if you can mod it you can get pretty good results (I am happy with the latest ROM I installed, Overcome + pershoot kernel).
Although samsung seems to be delaying ics upgrade in favor of new hardware and in my case in Spain I haven't received a single update to my 3g from stock HC 3.1, and stock is everything but functional after little use, not to mention no launcher hw acceleration so when you have a few icons, dragging them around can be infuriating, of course forget about live wallpapers, screen not refreshing certain elements after a while, reboots, and similar utter failure.
From what I am reading Asus is giving better support and motorola xoom already has ICS.
I even have a college at work who is talking wonders about a chinese tab (Onda?) which is much cheaper and already working with ICS.
I suggest you consider the manufacturer.
So here it is June. Any rumored dates for the Galaxy Note 10.1?
And will that justify a new forum, or will we continue with this one?

I don't have any of those problems with my Galaxy Tab 10.1. Dragging icons is fine, live wallpapers work fine, everything refreshes as it should, and I've not had any spontaneous reboots. I'm not rooted and everything seems zippy and smooth. Best tablet I've had so far. I'd like ICS but I'm willing to be patient. I'm sure they have their hands full making sure it's stable and working properly with Touchwiz. Anyone waiting for it through a carrier should be angry with them, not Samsung. The carriers are the ones responsible for pushing the update and most of them drag their feet for some reason.

Untrue. LG and Motorola have been far worse. Again, any carrier locked device is at the mercy of the carrier, not Samsung. Samsung may very well have pushed the ICS update to all the major carriers but they haven't pushed it out to their customers yet. Probably because they want to shove all their own UIs and bloatware on it first.
I would be getting the tab sim free and adding a sim to it later on. I much rather not have a locked device if I can buy it depending on price. So I presume updating wont be an issue.
Still no word from samsung though about the release dates

Hey everyone,
I was wondering which phone you think I should get. I currently have the HTC EVO 3D but I think I want to try out Samsung for at least a year. I have pretty big hands, so the Note wouldn't be too big for me. Should I wait for Sprint's Galaxy Note, or Sprint's Galaxy S3? Thanks!

ICS on note is officially released only in certain parts of the world, India & Germany were the first ones to get em other countries should follow soon.
I am a note owner but will be migrating to the S3, Note's great but is already an older gen phone with the quad cores coming in.
If I were you I would get either an S3 or wait for the Note 2.
PS: Will receive my S3 on the 30th and post the comparisons/impressions.
The Note will get ICS worldwide at some point or another so personally I wouldn't take that too much into account.
It boils down to screen size plus s-pen vs. quad core plus newer touchwiz. It depends if you value screen size or processing power more?

There are a few other things to it - the S3 is very likely to have higher audio quality, it also has BT 4.0 and Apt-X, full exFAT support, options for higher interal storage, better USB OTG support, slightly better camera quality and usability, and as you say better processor and GPU. Depends on a few things which will matter to some and not others.
I have a Note and will be doing lots of comparisons at http://www.AndroidNZ.net
I had the note. It is the exact same copy of the att samsung skyrocket but with a bigger screen. I wasnt impressed, its specs are outdated.
Now that ICS is out for the Note its a tough choice......Already have ICS and its a LOT faster than GB on the Note. I like using the pen as well.
For bench markers and spec buyers the S3 has a lot more to offer on paper. In reality though, for me, the DAC is the only thing I KNOW I will definitively realize the difference and not so much until SuperCurio does his magic..The only reason I would like to try an S3 is to get the Wolfson DAC and Voodoo sound back. Otherwise the screen size and the pen make the Note still viable for me.
Everything else is fine on the Note and specs are at the point where they can be measured better but not always realized in actual everyday use.
The point of diminishing returns has arrived. I have never used my OTG USB attachment or the HDMI attachments. I have 16GB plus 64GB storage and never was limited by the 2 GB limitation. 2GB is a HUGE single file. So look at ALL the capabilities and decide what is important to you as far as what you will actually NEED
Your decision based on those parameters will be easy...... I would keep the Note myself and wait a few months to see if Samsung rumors reveal a Note II with S3 specs.
i was one of the people who moved from Note to S3, i still have my note though... my personal notes after 5 days of s3 use:
1. Note Screen is still Bigger, better for reading larger texts although at the same S3 Screen shows better Colors and more CRISP font and i enjoy it actually.
2. Note PEN is unbeatable in all ways... i miss it. it did not work on s3, a special s3 pen is required it seems and it maybe coming soon.
3. S3 performasnce is way better than note... it is noticable in every aspect. Samsung i beleieve have worked well on the software in overall This Time.
4. i did not notice any battery drain on s3 at all, it lasts even more than NOTE which is bigger battery. knowing i am using 3G or WIFI always on, one of them always on. i have tried all GB and ICS Roms on NOTE.
5. S3 lacks MASS STORAGE! it uses only MTP option.
6. S3 is great for portability, Large screen and Lightweight at the same time.
7. those who think S3 design is not good, you have to hold it in your hand, for me i see it very nice ...
8. S3 does not include Polaris office full version or even Photo Editor that comes with note!
9. for now i will keep Using S3, i love it now but maybe if the nostalgia hits, i will use the note also
This is what i think of now...
I bought my note on 20th March 2012, and sold it on 19th May 2012, I will be buying GSIII, it will be launching here on 31st.
The reason I sold note was the size of it it is too big for me, but the screen size is really nice for browsing and watching videos, I think SIII wont be far behind Note but much more pocket-able, and easy to use, at least for me.
Galaxy S3 if you ask me.
i just bought my note 3 weeks ago now i'm buying the SIII ill keep both then sell one of them after few months
Note, if you need the pen. And of course, because of its size, the Note is also a great hand fan
hmmmm it sounds like the galaxy s3 is the phone to get. although I think I'll just get whatever comes first to sprint.

Asking out of curiosity, how will you use two phones ?
Alternate days ? Or switch weekly ? Or use both all the time with two seperate Sims ?
I've a sgs2. I want to move to sgs3 because of superior screen and good audio quality. But I don't want to sell my sgs2.
Can't figure out how I'll use both ?

Well, the S Pen on the Galaxy Note is actually an inductive stylus. The phone itself has the wacom digitizer built-in, that's why it is said to be for the niche market; and not so for the S III. So, only the capacitive stylus is compatible with the S III.

I think that 4.8" screen is enugh for browsing, gaminig...
In my opinion Note is too big for use with one hand.
I had an AT&T Note for almost a month, but in anticipation for the S3 I returned it. The main reasons I wanted the S3 over the Note:
- Battery: I wasn't happy with the longevity of the Note's battery. I didn't want to have to baby it (constantly monitor RAM/Programs) to get adequate usage out of it. The battery wasn't horrible by any means, but having that big beautiful screen didn't mean as much if you couldn't get enough time out of it on a full charge. (btw I kept everything stock so my exp with the battery pertains to that)
- Size: I tried my best to get used to the large size of the Note, but found that it was just a tad too big for me in the end. The one-handed use of it just wasn't practical for me, even though I did adapt to the size somewhat. Having a hybrid phone/tab was great, but I found that I missed the ease of a smaller device when multi-tasking with my other hand.
Those two factors were what really pushed me towards the S3. I felt the 4.8" would be a perfect match for size/practical use. And the battery sounds like it's definitely a winner too.
I'm patiently waiting for the c6806 but now that the galaxy note 3 is being announced and will be out early October , i might just jump ship and buy the note .Waiting for the LTE version is just painfully slow!
Build quality & the display is too small.
In the end the hardware pro's (ram, slightly higher clocking, cam) of the SGN3 are not compensating this for my requirements, as the performance of the XZU is still astonishing and i'm using my phone only for snapshots.
But your case is exactly showing the becalming situation Samsung has - people love to buy it anyway.
i almost bought the c6802 and live with the 3g connection but im pretty sure i'll be banging my head if the LTE version comes out, blaming myself that i should have waited .
LTE to me is the now technology and 3G is just not acceptable in my vocabulary .

Absolutely not.
I've seen the conferences yesterday, and both Sony and Samsung haven't entertained me.
I mean, Sony has great products but tends to lay them out without any heart at all.
On the other end, Samsung has no innovation at all, but from their point of view it seems they're presenting the Holy Grail to the public year after year.
I have an S3, which is a great device, but on the right and on the bottom the "metal" bezel cut itself for no reason at all. It is 1 year old. And I paid FULL PRICE for this. And by full I mean that it costed me almost as much as a 6833.
I don't want Samsung to fill me with bs telling me the SPen is excellent, that the battery is interchangeable, that this, that that. I already know all that.
And i don't give a damn anymore.
ZU is progression, SW2 too, hell even the SBH52 impressed me more than the N3.
I'm gonna get on board with Sony, and whenever I'll see a guy with his Note 3 I'll say "Hey man, nice phone, I hope you're happy with what you got", not feeling envious, not feeling sorry for not buying it.
Because in the end, what YOU feel with your phone matters, not that extra 0.1ghz or that 1gb of ram.
Let's face it, about 1 out of 1000 Note3 or S4 users will root or even use their device to the fullest. The rest of them will simply feel happy that they can update their Facebook status saying 'I have a Note 3! Sweet! ", until they're not happy again when their friends buy something more powerful/stylish/popular.
I prefer being a 1 percenter, with a device that makes me smile, than being a 99 one, with the regret that I could have bought something more.
But hey, that's just my 2 cents.

There are 2 face on that medal you know...
On one face, Samsung hasn't always been keen with developers, not releasing sources and all, BUT thousands of people buy those, and as a result a lot of developers choose the device they develop on based on popularity, and on the fact that developing there would be more of a challenge.
On the other face, Sony has always been open with the developer community, but their popularity has started to grow big not that long ago, so we might have on the ZU the same level of devs there are on the Z.
As a matter of fact, some of them already started (just take a look on the Android development section), and that is even before the LTE version launched.
Let's wait for UK, US, Germany, France, Italy, Spain etc. all have this device on their shelves, I have big expectations.

well, after viewing the Note 3 "coming out" party yesterday, I decided I am not interested in it...
I had a note 1, and a Note 2, which was a major upgrade to the note 1.
Fantastic phone, and I was hoping the Note 3 would be a major "upgrade" as well; but, the only upgrades, CPU speed, 3 gigs of Ram, and 13 MP camera isnt going to make the experience on the Note 3 that much better than the note 2.
I've been watching the Xperia Z Ultra since it came out, and, it looks like a fantastic phone; I am a big guy, so the size doesnt scare me, but I am waiting to see which US carriers will be carrying it.
I have owned at least 50 cell phones in my life, but mysteriously, NONE of them have been Sony phones, but I think this will change in the next 30 days.
It doesnt seem like there is alot of development on this phone yet, but, since many note 2 owners feel similiar to me, I am certain that there will be a large groupl that will move to this phone, once some US carriers are announced.
The quality of this phone seems fantastic; not sure if no flash for the camera will affect picture quality, and, hopefully, easy root/bootloader unlocking is just around the corner, since the sound from that tiny speaker appears to be lousy as well, but nothing that ViperMod or a different kernel wont fix!
The main problem SGN2 had and SGN3 as per first hands on, pics and vids also seems to have is, that - even if it is already to small for me as an Note 2 user - they're not making proper use of the screen size with view to UI on stock ROM.
In the end the Note 2 was and is just a sized up Galaxy.
And 2nd market (custom roms) is not a criterion on this topic for me, because if i have to customize the the product from day 1 to meet my needs, then there's something wrong and i'll better wait for the right deal.

Another user on another forum posted that maybe a real change will be seen when all S3s end their contract.
That's true for the S4 (they sold a lot less than what they were expecting), I was expecting it and I didn't fall for that.
That's true for the N3 too, as is a specced up S4 with SPen functions.
It will sell regardless of all this thoughts, but I could bet 1 out of 5 previous N2 owners will buy this N3, and the other 4 will scout around for a better choice or wait for the N4.
That's what I was planning to do skipping the iPhone 4 for the 5 (having the 3G), but Samsung stunned me with the S3 and I jumped ship.
I waited for a big change from the S3 to the S4, but I was ready to wait for the N3 this time.
Sony stunned me since they presented the ZU, I fell in love and that's it.
The only thing that would make me love even more this device would be having a stock-Google Play Edition.
That would be AWESOME.
Last but not least for the fact that we won't need implementation for the SPen, because the screen accept pens and pencils on its own...

Pretty much agree with most posts. I've had the Note & Note 2 (using HTC One now) & the Note 3 doesn't do it for me. I really hate Touchwiz. Everything about it annoys me so I've run custom roms on all my Samsung phones. I don't use the s pen at all either so it just sits there.
I like the direction Sony are heading. I would prefer a smaller bezel but I really like the waterproof design & the minimal additions to Android.
I really don't see why Samsung are the Android leaders...

Advertising, advertising, and advertising. Oh, I forgot about advertising.
They could sell a smart ring for your toe advertising it as the next companion for the summer for getting rid of fungus because it has a 5mpx camera that scans the pavement before you set your foot on it.

i can't decide between the s4 and the note 2. i've read many comparisons of the two, which list most of the differences in features. however, almost all the comparisons are older, and state that some missing features on the note 2 will show up with future software updates. with 4.3 getting ready to roll out for the note 2, i'm curious what features are still missing. i like a lot of the camera features on the s4.
I personally have the S4 and a friend has the Note 2. There are a good bit of differences between the two phones. What sold me on the Galaxy over the Note was not necessarily functionality but it was the fact that if never be in the situation to utilize the S Pen enough to be worth it and you wouldn't be able to Life Proof it and still have access to the pen. I'd also say to consider the Note 3 if the price isn't out of your range.
You might get the extra camera features in an update for the Note 2 but what you'll never get is a better camera in general... if a camera is a big deal then get the S4 because having used both the S4 completely destroys the Note 2 in picture quality. I guess the big question is do you think you'll use the S-Pen for anything more than a once in a while gimmick? If you can truthfully answer that you will then I guess you have your answer. Also, having seen both devices side by side I honestly think 1080p looks WAY better than the 720p despite the larger screen... I want the clarity more than the size.
Like Quentin.Sheley already said though, if you have the money then the Note 3 pretty much gets you the best of both worlds without having to compromise...
i honestly dont think i would use the s pen very often. my thinking is that with typing out text messages and emails, browsing the web and watching videos, i would enjoy the bigger screen on the note (but still unsure of how pocketable it will be, especially after an otterbox). however, my only 2 smartphones have been the droid x and the original razr maxx (current phone). so even the s4 will probably feel huge at first.
the note 3 looks awesome, but it is out of my price range.

Go to a retail store and play an HD video with the Note 2 and S4 side by side and you'll see what I mean about 1080p being so much sharper... now if after that you decide you still just want more screen real estate well then that's fine, I love the Note 2 just as much as the S4 but remember what I said about the camera and if you are set on using Otterbox that Note 2 is going to be insanely bulky
i know that the s4 is newer and has more features and better specs. i guess i'm just trying to decide if i want the bigger screen.

How much are you willing to spend? If you don't mind waiting a few months the Note 3 is sure to drop in price, probably to around $250 on Amazon or WireFly, perhaps more with deals/coupons/etc so if you want that nice big screen you're better off getting the awesome 1080p that the Note 3 has to offer. If however your budget is under $200 or you don't want to wait then the Note 2 is still a great option
IMO s4
I was debating the same thing. But I love my choice with the s4. If I want a device that big I would get a 7" tablet to carry around and use my phones hotspot to browse the web with. The note 2 is still a great phone and is very similar to the s4 but if you want better camera and amazing screen res, and if you want a better performance phone. (With a custom rom ) Then I would go with the s4. If you feel like you're in need of a bigger screen then note 2. But if you decide to go the note route wait it out for the note 3. Will definitely be worth the wait.

I just received the matte gold nexus 6p and all I can say is wow!
Everything about this phone is premium and dam its pretty. Coming from someone who also owns a nexus 5x and a nexus 6 I can tell you that this appears to be the perfect device. After using the nexus 6 for a while, I loved it. I also felt the same about the 5x but there was something missing. I wanted the big screen back and all new hardware features from the new set of devices. (Plus the nexus 5x was laggy, and the nexus 6 was just slightly dated at this point).
So far I haven't been able to knock anything about this device. The only thing I guess I could say is that it's so thin and slick you always feel like you are going to drop it. This is the closest to iPhone quality standards that I've seen in a phone. Once you get it in your hands you will see it far exceeds anything currently out there running Android.
I'm not sure where all the hate has been coming from but this thing is a beautiful beast of a phone so far.
Congrats! Totally agree with you. I love my 6P. To be honest I think it is in its own league. Beautiful, sturdy and top notch quality.

Congratz! Enjoy this badboy 6P on XDA!
I want one but I am still loving my note 5... decisions, decisions! Anyone make the switch from a note 5?

I'm also trying to decide if I want to upgrade or not. I have the Nexus 6 at the moment.

I must say the note 5 doesn't hold a candle quality wise. If you are considering it and have the extra funds you won't be disappointed.

I was unsure about upgrading from the nexus 6 too, but the new features are so worth it. It's worth taking the chance I would just go for it. You won't be disappointed.

The only thing that is keeping me away at this point is the camera on the 6p... or I should say camera software. I will miss the s-pen though... But other then that.. all the reviews I have read and watched seem damn good.
I had a nexus 6 before this 6p and I loved my nexus 6, the slightly narrower design is the main deal breaker for me it's only a few mm but I always found the original nexus 6 just to wide, this 6p is perfect, I also in work have a note edge, it's not a patch on this phone imo.

I was always a note person as long as I can remember but once you take a look at it the software isnt that great. Plus this is the best camera on a phone I've seen.
The notes camera is better for sure but the 6p's is no slouch.
It's funny how the brain works once you spend a lot of money on something. I owned the Note 5 for a good while and the 6P for a little over a month. I now own neither phone.
Now as an outside observer with no money attached to either device, I can with 100% confidence assure everyone that the Note 5 has a better camera than the 6P.
People who say otherwise are lying to themselves unfortunately. I hate to sound harsh but that's the truth of the matter.
With that being said, the 6P has a very good camera. It's just not up to Note 5 levels overall.

I don't think anyone was speaking on the camera. To me, as far as build quality goes and software the 6p exceeds the note 5.

Other people brought up the camera, I wasn't replying specifically to you. Considering both of my 6P's bent, I wouldn't say the build quality is better. And software is a tough one. If you measure software by added features then the Note 5 kills the 6P. If you measure it by a stock experience then the 6P kills the Note.
Yes I had the s6 with all the features I mean gimmicks, but touchwiz is total crap. Yes the camera might be better on the note but it doesn't hold a candle to the N6 software wise and the development for nexus devices. Go get a point and shoot if you desperately need amazing photos. This is the best android phone on the market.

Yeah no offence to Samsung but touchwiz makes me want to rip my hair out. My mother has a s6 edge+ and I absolutely cannot stand the ui on it and neither can she. Very bloated and fairly hard to navigate, not to mention the lag. But IMHO it really depends what your looking for in a device whether you'll love the n6p over your current phone. Do you love nexus devices? Want latest android on a slick phone that will last? Treat your flagship very delicate because it is aluminum and electronics? Love customization or roms? The n6p is probably for you. Are you a professional photographer who uses their phone for that? Want a stylus? Don't baby your phone? Like stock "features" and "useful" apps? Probably not for you.

Will be doing so very soon, Samsung apps and memory management have been frustrating as well as not having a 64gb version locally until now. Can't wait

AS a network engineer I use smartphone for a variety of tools, my average SOT 6+. I get these phones thru work but I choose what they buy. From the S3, S4 to Note 3, Note 4 and Note 5. I always root. I was able to to have them swallow a Note 4 DE so I could have the unlocked bootloader on VZ network. During the new buying season they went with the Note 5 but I stayed with the Note 4, reason why, there will be no developer edition of it. So 6 days a go I got tired of Samsung lack of update on their phone especially the Note 4 so I decided to grab a 6P. This is not my phone Nexus phone, I had all them until the 6. Once the 6P came in I was already ready to flash what I wanted on it. I've went 6 days on the phone almost straight, lost sleep hours etc lol.
Can you say addicted to a phone? I couldn't believe I waited so long to get it. The Note 4 will be last Samsung phone, from now on I'll stay with nexus.
