[Q] Replace internal memory chip with a huge one? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hi all,
I'd like to replace the internal memory with a huge one, as big as possible.
For example instead of having a 16GB or 32GB S4, to walk around with a 1TB version. How cool would that be
Is there any way the chip can be soldered off and replaced by a new one?
I'm prepared to brick my phone, I just wanna try it.
I can't seem to figure out the model number / manufacturer's SKU of the memory chip.
Any and all thoughts are welcome

I don't think it would be possible. The phone is probably setup to recognize the 16 or 32gb in the software. I'm sure that could be changed though. It would be a pain in the butt I'm sure to desolder the old one and put the new one in. Small components and very delicate. Can't use to much heat. It would be worth the trouble if it works. Would be very interesting to see if you could make it work if you find a chip.

There are quite a few reasons why this would not work.

You wouldn't be able to solder the chip as its surface mounted .

Wow thread fail. Close thread
For starters already started solder and the software implementation of that kind of storage would be difficult to do as well. So if you can solder as good as Samsung motherboard makers and right better code then Samsung and find 1 tb micro sdcard size to fit in the board then I say go for it!!
But really wow lol

As someone said, it is surface mounted, you won't be able to do that. Even removing the old memory without screwing up the board will be extremely hard.
And... 1tb? Are you serious? The maximum capacity for single chip NANDs doesn't come not even close to that.
Get yourself a 64gb micro SD, it's the only way.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda premium

The fact that you even think you could have a 1TB phone leads me to believe you have no clue how to solder something effectively.

lol

I just wanted to bump this to the top of the list again, because I think it's of such great importance. We need to find a solution to this. Forget that online storage.

The sheer complexity of micro soldering. The physical size of the NAND that the op has wishfully postulated. The interoperability of specific NAND with the mainboard. The fact that the new NAND would have to have information written to it before it would even be bootable.

I have access to techs at a friend's company that could do SMT work, but I'm not about to sacrifice my phone Some said there is a software check, where would that be?

Just the practical aspect of de/re soldering a surface mount chip...
I'm a jedi master with a fine tip soldering iron and I wouldn't try this unless it was my only hope to get off a desert island or something.
My father, who I learned from, and made a good career of fine electronics repair before whole-board replacement became cheaper then component replacement, even he didn't do this, not even to replace a $5 chip with the same chip on $50,000 boards. I do remember him pulling it off exactly once tinkering with a VCR back when they were new technology. But chips were different then and had much larger pins. Surface mount chips today don't even have pins. They have contacts that are sort of glued with a conductive cement; can't be removed, period.
Best of luck to ya but understand this is a fools errand.

I bricked my phone in attempt to get 1TB, YOLO!
(pro tip, the HDD barely fit)

I don't know what's worse...the fact that you think this is possible or the fact that you're prepared to break something that probably cost you around $650 for fun.

Hi, my GS3 just died. Apparently the motherboard is broken. I really need to recover the pictures in my internal memory card. They should have been uploaded automatically to Dropbox but somehow they did not. I just had a baby and would be really sad to lose all the pictures I took over the last months.
I know this isn't exaclty the appropiate thread, but as you're talking about removing the internal memory chip, I wonder if that could be done so I could read the memory once it's not on the broken board anymore
Thanks in advance. Please don't be rude if this sounds idiotic to you, I'm just not an expert

Galaxy S II 32GB Exynos/Mali

Hi. I have one! I am an Android noob, but would like to give back where I can. Living in the wilds of Palm for as long as I have any tidbits are valued. If anyone wants/needs this ROM please post me explicitly detailed instructions on how I can capture this ROM and post/submit it to whomever. I dunno if this is a unique device given the 32GB storage, but would like to help if it is.
Just purchased today in Taiwan.

I9100XXKG1
2.6.35.7 I9100ZSKG2-CL361136

Anything else anyone wants?
i want your phone.
Oh I've been waaaaaaaaaiting for it so bad my spleen's swolled up!
That said, I can easily get more, and would be more than willing to send them to anyone who wants/needs one. It costs NT$22490, plus shipping to you plus maybe a bit for myself as it takes honky me longer to execute on the simplest things here in non-honky Taiwan. I had to pay NT$2300 last week to get on the waiting list to get a launch day (today 8/5) phone which was refunded, but I doubt that hurdle will be needed now. They had about 20 at the head office of the incumbent telco here in my 1,000,000 person city.

What about mine ? Ive just bought 64gb version with 5"screen and love it so much. Hehehe
this post should be in q&a or general?
Pls think twice before posting in the wrong section
I posted there too a little chattier since I thought I had a unique device here. But as I say in the OP I post here to know if any dev wants me to send them this ROM. It may not be valuable, but I felt I needed to ask. I'm sure it'll be moved or deleted if people above our pay grade deem it so. As for the sale thing, again, it might be a tool for a dev, my Palm ethos demands I try to give back. It was a much smaller community and the best dev lived in a country that didn't even have access to devices.

[Q] I broke something

so I was going to clean my lcd,and when I was taking the phone apart,I believe I broke some pins on the motherboard for the cam, because now my cam don't wanna work anymore. could someone tell me if this is fix able or if your interested in buying it. the phone is in pretty good shape just some wear and tear, the screen is in perfect cond, other besides the cam it fine..thanks
can upload some pics later if anyone needs them.
Pics of the broken parts would help. However, if you broke something on the motherboard, there is a 99.9% chance you won't be able to fix it. These motherboards aren't made to be fixed, and the solder points are so small you won't be able to repair it without some VERY expensive equipment.

[Q] Logic Board Swap?

Hello all on the xda, hope you're all doing well.
Once again I prove my nooby prowess by bombarding the forums and hopefully asking a question a few others have lingering.
A local seller has a Galaxy SII for sale for £70 as it's got an IMEI bar on it.
If I were to take the S2 and put my logic board in it, would that also transfer the IMEI and my current system of ParanoidAndroid?
I know it sounds like quite a stupid question but the opportunity could be there for me to have what is essentially a brand new S2 in noble black for 70 quid as my screen has been smashed by a blundering drunkard who thought they'd try and bottle me and instead, hit my phone.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and as the weekend fast approaches, may I wish everyone on the forums a good one
Peace out
When you say logic board are you referring to the mother board?
I'm no expert, but the way I see it, if you replace the whole motherboard and all components of that phone with yours, it should work since it sunds similar to replacing a broken screen+digitizer which many have done successfully.
Maybe some of the folks here who know more can give a verdict, but IMO £70 for a brand new unlocked S2, I'd give it a shot.
Good luck!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Of course it should work. The other way would be to use the screen off of the new one and put it on yours(depends on model colour).
I would also suspect the other phone will have more problems than hes telling you.
Thanks for the responses, I found that the phone was just locked out via a lock pattern haha! Guy sold it but will be getting another for sale soon as he works within a mobile phone industry with Orange (which I'm on) so that's alright how difficult does everyone reckon a complete reshell including screen and digitizer would be? thanks guys

that would be an expensive affair though
If you can back yourself to do it, it'd be pretty cheap. Many vids on YouTube showing you how to replace the screen and digitizer. Seems fiddly..but worth a try if you know what you're doing. Getting it done professionally would be a tad expensive.

Yeah eBay.

[Q] Anyone here switch from the Verizon S3 to the DNA?

If you had the Verizon S3 (not another carrier)
Can you please compare :
1. Audio Quality
2. Reception (which drops more calls or fades in and out).
3. Battery Life (preferably battery life based on total talk time than surfing or playing games).
Hmm I don't even have to own the DNA to answer
1. Call quality has always been great for me on HTC
2. Samsung cdma radios don't compare to htc
3. Battery life has, been stated to be the same or marginally worse than the gs3.
Gs3 is a great device. Prob gonna come down to what u like better, sense or touch wiz. But DNA should be a very nice device.
I'll be able to share more once I get it in my hands this coming week, should be here by the 20th 21st the latest. I love my S3 nothing wrong with it but I love new devices and keeping up with technology. I will say off the back build quality has always always been better with HTC.
I'll share more once I get the phone!

As far as 1 goes - MANY of their devices had problems with BT over the years - you could hear fine but the person you were calling would get reduced volume etc - some of them they fixed this issue with firmware updates.
As far as 2 goes, the EVO on Sprint was great - the EVO 3D had similar problems to the S3 for reception.
When some people get the phone, we'll hopefully have some detailed analysis of talk time comparisons.

Pardon my blunt nature when I say that, you asked a question pertaining to a phone that is not officially available so you must have asked this question in an open forum hoping the 4 or so people that have the device would reply
Take my advice with a grain of salt then but I am sure it will be an accurate answer to your question about this mythical phone until its release date and the masses own it.
at what point do I have to currently own the gs3 to be able to tell you about it. Maybe I have had extensive hands on with the device in such extent that I feel I can accurately talk about it.
I pre ordered mine, will get it soon. Only thing is that I wont be able to move my microSD card from the S3.
I just hope that ifixit teardown will reveal a hidden sdcard slot in the back some where then I will be happy.

You've doubled down on your ignorance. I am not the one that asked the original question.
Aside from that, take a look around. There are plenty of people that have already received these phones, and have been doing reviews on them. I think his question was quite legitimate, and think this thread would be better suited to include responses that are directly related to his question, including my own, which is why I'm dropping this now.

Its not that there is no room, the general consensus is that verizon requested not to have one to make people use more cloud storage and thus more data.

Yes, but someone is selling a micro sd card specifically for the DROID dna leading to some speculation that the slot exists, just no opening for it.
I for one would be willing to open it up to put a "permanent" sd card in there.

This. I find it extremely likely that the board is the same as the Butterfly's meaning there's the pins for a sd slot to be put in or possibly even an actual sd slot that isn't accessible from the outside, yet there's no way that ebay seller knows of this.
Alright so when is somebody going to open one up??? Lol

S-Off and Unbrick Project

Hello dear XDA-Community,
The idea of this thread was to serve as an un bricking thread eventually,
I am looking into a riffbox for jtag service, I am approaching xda to see if any users would be interested in helping me cover the cost of said riffbox
if you were to donate towards the cause in return you would receive free unbrick service and jtag service for all your devices as long as the riffbox supports the CPU architecture
If this is of no interested not a big deal i just thought i would give the community a chance to get involved rather than keeping all the cool toys at my house and not sharing
This thread will be the hub for service requests. If you happen to need unbrick service, you will find this thread and us to help you.
I will post a log of all payments made from that money plus all Items received (e.g. the RIFF Box, the cables, Jigs, etc.)
I will also keep an online "work and ticket tracker" so that you can see live reports /pictures of the status of your repairs
now your like ok i didnt donate to help you buy this thingamabobber now i bricked my phone and i dont wanna pay some dude on ebay 60$ to fix it
cool find me post in the thread if your device is supported we can get it unbricked
Please remember i am one man and do have a child so im not planning to support 43000000x users but i dont think it would be bad to offer service to RC's RD's and senior members of xda for no cost of labor just get the unit here and ill jtag it up
RIFF Box - US $155.00 + Shipping
JIG Connector - negligible i have a variable temp soldering station so i could solder to the board direct at low heat
Updates / Facts / News:
Some things you might see around the thread
Hope this is gonna be very very educational for people too. Unbricking always is some sort of a mystery for many and if you send off your phone to some stranger on ebay, you usually don't get an idea about the "Hands On" and gettin' dirty bit of tearing down a phone and actually make it look nice and work properly again afterwards.
So, maybe we will even have some photos or videos and stuff and just give you an idea of how that all works...
Please ask your questions
and if your located in the USA and close to me for XDA active members I will always do what I can to help out as XDA has always helped me out
I am not trying to sell jtag service at all guys im saying if we can get me a riffbox ill give xda senior members RD's RC's RT's mods and members with over a 300 post count free jtag service
Sounds like a great idea are you thinking of just doing any amount contributions from people or set amounts ?

I took mine apart in 20 minutes its about as easy as an iphone 3gs to get apart once you get the front LCD warm and suctioned out (hehe that sounded bad)
it was way smoother and easier than i thought it would be to get apart much less prying and clips than previous HTC models
That's good to know. Side question for you since you successfully opened yours up- How easy would it be to fix the misaligned speaker pieces?

I will need to type it up in the meantime YouTube jtag

@tjsooley
It will require a teardown of the unit, (I am not some kid doing this for the first time I worked 2 years at a mobile repair shop as lead technician and am well experienced) once the board is removed the JTAG unit will be attached in the proper points
Then essentially the jtag unit acts as the device in the factory that programs the chips. So I can program whatever I want on there like S-Off SuperCID etc
Then button up the unit ensure all is well (sealed up etc) pass to second eyes for inspection then send back to you
