[Q] Beam Files (with NFC) - Receiving End Not needed - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Trying to find an app where I can beam files (pictures/pdfs/videos) without the need of a particular app. Like say I want to send a file to a family member, is there a way for him not to have an app to receive it? I found Beam NFC file from the play store but it never works.
Or am I wrong, that both devices have to have the same app?
Thank you.

[Q] Sync SMS between multiple phones & tablets?

I'm using multiple android devices, all of them under one phone number (only one plan that includes five separate sim cards). All of the services are available under any individual device, BUT! Text messages (SMS) ONLY arrive at the devices that holds the "primary" or "master" sim card.
What I'd like to have, is the ability to somehow send any arriving messages from the primary device via something (email? im?) that doesn't require them to be in close vicinity (so no wlan/bluetooth). So that it wouldn't matter which device I hold, I'd always receive any incoming text messages and they would be available on all devices. Best would be, if also SENT messages would sync between devices.
Also of note is that the sync should be (almost) instantaneous (as fast as can be achieved via push-gmail or instant messaging). So no scheduled syncs or anything that requires an interval.
Each one of the devices are capable of sending/receiving sms on their own, so no technical barriers exist on that front.
By syncing, I mean that the messages would be available at each device's own "messaging system", NOT just backed up in email or something. (so SMS2Mail of backupsms -style apps are out of the question.)
The devices are running Android 2.2, 2.3, 3.1 and come next year, android 4.0.
I'm going to use:
* Samsung Galaxy Note
* Samsung Galaxy Tab
* Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9
* Samsung Galaxy Gio
* Motorola Defy
I've looked into TotalSMS Control, DeskSMS, Phone Control and various other apps, but they all lack some part of what I need. (DeskSMS looked the most promising, but apparently doesn't work on Honeycomb, at least market doesn't show DeskSMS for my Tab 8.9).
If this exists, please tell me. If it doesn't, I'm willing to pay some.
Note: monthly/yearly fees are not out of the question. The services need not be free, just working
Did you ever find an app that worked for you? I'm in a similar situation and would be interested to hear what you settled on.
No, unfortunately I didn't. I'm currently using Phone Control. I needed to change my primary device from Tab 8.9 to Note to get PC to work (since it required telephony). It is hands down the fastest of what I have tested. Unfortunately it only sends the arriving sms as email to the other devices, there is no way to actually 'sync' anything between the devices.

Hello AnttiV,
I have already posted my setup (somewhat applicable to your case) in this Thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1368228).
To make best use of the app that I use in my setup (mysms) I would slightly modify it. You can install mysms on you main device (which has the SIM card that is marked as primary). Then you can access and write messages from all other smartphones via the mysms mirror app (search for 'mysms mirror' in the play store).
I used the free Web app to text from my iPad until I decided to purchase the app from the App store.
Hope this helps you.
@eileenfj0713:
that's not even remotely usable in this scenario? That's only SMS transfer, not a simultaneous receiving.
However, I've now been using MySMS for about year, and that seems to be the best solution (it's even cross platform! Works from iOS also) available. I heartily recommend MySMS to anyone looking for a solution to this kind of a problem.

S Beam port possible?

I was wondering if any developers were working on porting s beam over to our devices? Android Beam lacks the feature of sending larger files so s beam kind of solves the problem. I hate having to go through settings to enable wifi direct and then manually connect to other devices and manually send files. I think it's actually pretty smart to have nfc establish this connection automatically.

I don't think its possible
Honestly it sounds more likely that someone would modify Android Beam to accommodate larger files and such, since its manufacturer agnostic.
This is not a solution but when jelly bwan comes out for the I1777 we will be able to send larger files.

I realize I'm necroing, but why isn't this possible? We have Wifi direct and NFC, and some ROMs retain Touchwiz if TW dependencies exist with S Beam, so why wouldn't it be possible to port S Beam over? I think it would be both cool and useful if we could mod our phones to work with GS3s, and besides, there aren't many other current uses for NFC right now anyway.
Side note, what is the current file size limit for Android beam transferring?

From what I understand, when transferring media files with android beam, all it does is enable bluetooth and transfers via that. So, I don't think there would be a file size limit.
Task 650 ROM has this enables and works well

An initial search of the AOKP thread doesn't mention anything specific about S Beam, it seems to be only Android Beam. I'm just wondering about a full S Beam port, that would work with stock S3s and any other Samsung devices that include S Beam, especially since I've heard people have problems using Android Beam with S3s, which get confused. Samsung's Android devices are so prevalent nowadays, so it would be nice to be able to interact with them easily without having to fuss around with extra apps or settings. I just want to know if it's possible or not.
EDIT: So a little more research done. Android beam isn't a separate app but is built into ICS (guess I forgot that lol). It uses Bluetooth to share data and is limited to links and contacts (maps and YouTube videos fall under links, you don't beam the whole thing, you just beam the specific urls). Please correct me on that point if I'm wrong. This is already possible with S3s, I didn't know they retained Android beam in addition to SBeam, which uses wifi direct and can transfer larger files like pictures (it's faster too).
As useful as Android beam is because it works with all nfc-capable ICS devices, I still think a full S Beam port would prove useful since it can transfer larger files faster and with newer Samsung devices (of which there are now several, and they're the most popular). So is it possible? And if not, why not?

Fyi..this stuff is very old news. In Jellybean, you are now able to send larger files via android beam, such as audio and video. But files aren't actually transferred through android beam, all it does is activate bluetooth and automatically pair your device with the other phone to initiate transfer via bluetooth. S Beam is the same thing, except it activates wifi direct instead of bluetooth.
I'd give up on this whole s beam thing if I were you. I have not seen any devs ever mention implementing it on our phones.

[Q] NFC Bonk with other Android devices.

Hi I can only use the standard Android apps (YouTube, Contacts etc) to NFC transfer to other NFC enabled Android devices (like my Nexus 7). If I try and use something like Sony picture viewer, the other device refuses to accept it (because I'm guessing it doesn't have access to the app).
Surely the whole point of intents is that you can send a picture between any other Android device, regardless of the viewing app?
Is this because Sony don't use the same package name or something? Any plans to fix it?

S3 NFC problems !

I know there are many threads on this but i didn't found solution around
I tried to beam with nexus 7 and Galaxy nexus but s3 says s beam is off and both nexus opens market just because they find S-beam and this is very sh*t of samsung
So is there way of beaming with nexus's
Bump !
Are you trying to beam a photograph by any chance? S Beam (and Android Beam) actually tries to beam the current app if said app doesn't support NFC (either launching it if it's installed on the target device or going to the relevant Play Store link if it isn't). When I tried beaming an image from my i9305 to my One X it took me to a non-existent Play Store page and I believe it is trying to install Samsung's gallery app, not S Beam. When beaming from apps supporting NFC on both devices (e.g. sending browser URLs) I have no problems at all regardless of whether S Beam is enabled.

this is exactly what happens When I beam between s3 and nexus 7
but I can share any file between two s3
so if beam dosnt work why we cant share with WiFi direct

Is it possible to view your old SnapChat files?

I want to view my old outbound SnapChap videos and pictures and I am aware that they are stored somewhere on smartphones. I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE.
Is it possible to find these files?
Whenever you receive a snap, Snapchat stores them temporarily in /data/data/com.snapchat.android/cache as jpg.nomedia files. They are able to be accessed if snaps haven't been opened yet (and for some reason some just tend to stay there long after the message has been viewed).
When a Snap is opened, the app deleted that cache of files. So it's likly that if you have already viewed them, they have been deleted.
That may not always be the case (as I managed to dig up some old snaps last night), but it's how the app functions.
There's an app called Snaps that can fetch whatever is in the temp cache folder and save it as jpgs. If you have root it's worth trying to use that app (the apk can be downloaded off Github somewhere).
Mine are in storage/emulated/0/Snapchat

there's an xposed module that enables saving.......
look for it here
Thanks for the replies but what I'm trying to find are the pictures and videos that I have sent to other people. I know they've probably gone for good but it would be nice to find them:good:
Not sure it's possible sorry - Snapchat only caches inbound Snaps so outgoing ones can't be received.
Sorry for misreading your question.
