Does this happen to anyone else? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I've noticed that sometime if I'm I'm an app and I push the home button it almost instantly brings me back to my home screen and other times it has a slight half second delay. For example it will be super fast maybe 10x in a row, then it will have a slight delay but eventually gets quick again.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

I experience this every now and then, usually with resource-hungry apps. Not to pretend like I know what I'm talking about (because I don't), but it might also have something to do with redraws on the launcher.

Oh yeah I'm running nova launcher prime.. No maybe it's just the launcher and not the phone at all? Other than this i really never notice any lag.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

I should mention that I also have aggressive desktop checked on nova launcher. Not sure what it does though. Maybe the next time I notice this slight delay bill restart nova launcher and if it goes away I guess I'll know it's a nova launcher issue which in sure the next update will fix.

Ok so it's definitely nova launcher. It started having a little delay again, restarted nova, and it was back to normal. Hope the fix it.

If you have S-Voice activated on your phone the S4 will wait about a half a second after you press the home button to see whether or not you press it again to activate S-Voice. If you disable this, it will immediately go to the home screen after pressing the home button. It is not lag, but rather a built in timer.

I have had this happen a few times . I've been running the CM nightlies and just thought it was something to do with the build.

I turned my kernel to stock settings (I was overclocked) to try to replicate your problem and I guess now that I am consciously thinking about it I have it too, I don't think its a huge deal though. A quarter of a second isn't that bad to me so I don't really care. If I'm overclocked it the animation is instant. It could be the ap switcher animation that lags under high resources. Try disabling that? or OC your phone.

How do I disable it? Idk how to over clock. I'm not rooted. I'm sort of a smartphone noob. Like I said if I close all recent apps it's instant but other times it's a fraction of a second. It's not nessecarily when I have tons of apps running either.

In your developer settings, select animator duration scale and turn it to 'off' see if that helps. If not, then there isn't alot you can do unrooted I don't believe.

Oh yeah, I have all of that off. I actually just turned them all on 1x to see how it felt and it definitely isn't as fast but it feels smoother.
Sent from my Verizon Galaxy S4

Yeah I have them all at 1x and haven't touched them, I tend to stay away from most of the things in developer settings

Oh I see. I have them all off now. I uninsulated this app called system monitor lite and it seems like it always runs in the background bcuz how else would it be able to monitor my battery temp etc all day? It might be placebo but ever since I uninstalled it everything seems to be running really good.
Sent from my Verizon Galaxy S4

Well I've spent hours trying to figure this out. When I have 0 apps running, and for example I open up the phone app or contacts app, then hit the home button, it responds instantly. However, sometimes once I get a bunch of apps running in the background the home button response can slow to like half a second, almost as if that s voice home button feature was enabled. Do you think the problem here could be that a bunch of apps aren't yet optimized for the s4 so when they are running in the background they are causing some home button lag?

It has something to do with the Voice control samsung built into the phone, people were saying you can freeze/ delete the app and your home button will be instant, i can personally vouch for this because I'm using CM7, a rom that doesn't have the voice control and my home button actually is instant.
it something to do with the processor and power management.
The delay is present in CM too but not as bad

I thought that had to do with the wakeup "lag" i.e. just waking the phone up from sleep, if you are talking about that yes its present in CM as well. I thought he was asking about home button when exiting out of apps and such, as i noticed a slight delay in that when i was using the stock rom.
I've froze voice commands with Bloat Freezer and this hasn't made any difference :/
Since KG1 firmware, home button lag has been solved. Home button acts normal now.
The OP hasn't explained what his problem actually is, so there's no point telling him to freeze apps!
@jameslfc5
Do you mean it takes a couple of seconds when the screen is off and you wake the phone with the home button, or do you mean it pauses when you're running an app and you press home to go back to your home screen?

It responds instantly when connected to a charger. So it must be software related. I haven't found any 2.3.3. or 2.3.4 ROMs that remove the lag entirely. I'm sure someone will figure it out though.
When connected to charger the phone does not sleep. So no lag.
I have same problem as OP.
Note - it's not the wake-up delay, which is also annoying. It's the regular "go back to home screen" delay when using the phone.
I'm running Cognition 1.31, and problem was present on Stock ROM, VillainROM, Cognition 1.15 and 1.31.
I had voice control only on Stock ROM, and don't have it now - no difference. Delay is about 0.5-1 second.
Super annoying. Makes it feel slow. Was not present on any of the SGS ROMs.
+1
I just think of an iPhone... it's better in only this thing
CM7 fixes it. I think I know what you mean, I had it in Cognition 1.31 and litee'ning rom. Now I don't or don't even notice it.

The touchwiz is slow? or it just me?

Hi everyone!!
5 days ago i bough a new galaxy s 3.
This is great device everything is perfect except one thing, the touchwiz 4.
Every time than I close an application it take some time (about 5-10 seconds) than everything comes back. So I decided to do an experiment. I downloaded Go launcher, made him default launcher and until now zero seconds of delay.
Am I the only one who expects that issue??
thanks all
touchwiz is just fine and fast enough. Is it faster compared to go, apex launcher and others? Definitely no but the for the functionality touchwiz gives it is fast on sgs3.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
that's strange, because i am very upset from the reaction of the touch wiz. I only have him 5 days.
I will give you an example.
I play "where's my water" for example and that i press the home button it exits the game but it shows me only background picture and after 5 seconds everything comes back but that i go to app tray it shows nothing for about 10 seconds and everything comes back.
IT's very very annoying.
Oh, you're talking about known issue, UI redrawing, there's already posted a solution for that.

You can disable S-Voice on Home Button double click -> increases Home Button reaction dramatically.
(Double Click Home Button - S-Voice opens, then hit the menu button, options, disable)
That was the first thing that I've done
That's for the home button lag, to fix the redraw set dalvik.vm.heapsize=256m to 192m at /system/build.prop.
You need to be rooted and have a root explorer that mounts system rw though.

What's bothersome to me is once the phone is in sleep mode and u click the home or power button it takes sometimes 1 sec or 2 or even 3 secs and if you immediately try to scroll unlock the animation on the water is slowed as well. I didn't expect the phone to be slower to wake up then my N900 or LG O3D. Hope next update fixes this issue. BTW i've uninstalled s-voice and disabled any power saving features.
The slow lock-screen problem is linked to an apparent feature that Samsung have made to save battery, basically it puts the other cores to sleep for battery savings.

Some weird lag in my galaxy s3 !

Some times my galaxy s3 gets laggy ( i mean laggy in scrolling in menu , scrolling thru home screens) , everything. The animations wont stay smooth for a short time.
Im not interested in flashing any custom rom and i think the s3 is pretty fast and smooth with the stock rom , and i even want to keep the features.
Any idea what is causing this ?
Thanks.
Settings - advance settings, change both window and transition to 0.5x
S- voice - settings - uncheck the launch s- voice with double tap of home button.
There is a lag on home button because the phone is waiting to see if you press it a second time to activate s-voice, the above 2 really do help.

If you are using any widgets that have information that automatically updates, remove them and reboot. Reapply them 1 by 1 leaving a while between each. Before adding the next one, check for lags. When you find lag, it's likely the last one you applied is the culprit.

Power saving only causes issues but does not really prolong the battery life (according to my own and other people's tests)
Just keep it off and enjoy the phone.

Since a lot of contact syncs generally lengthen the contact list. If u r logged in to too many social networking sites or other apps like chaton and accounts like samsung account, it generally slows down the phone. Since initially the mobile didnt hv lots of contacts and sync accouts , it was running smooth.

no it makes just the animations run with 60 frames per second, but it doesn't disable lags. on android you will have always lags, because the UI rendering has a low priority.
take it easy guys it's just a phone, even a desktop lags what more for a phone..

I dont think android will ever been mostly lag free. even a 200€ windows phone runs more smooth then a 500€ samsung galaxy s3, its a "problem" of android. but for that con, it has good multitasking.
I'm experiencing pretty slow and laggy multi tasking and laggy YouTube. The multitasking was a lot smoother on my gnex. Is this normal or should I go exchange my s3 for a new one.

On my Note it appears to be a TouchWiz problem. I do not have the lock screen enabled as my phone never leaves my side. From sleep it takes approx. 1 second to wake if i press the power button when using TouchWiz. It wakes in less than half a second when i use SSLauncher or Nova!
Not using touchwiz. Nova launcher instead. Still get crazy lag. Seems its across all Note 2. Hoping for a fix.
I was browsing the n7100 forums and someone there asked the same question. A lot of people said that the lag was because of the phone coming out of deep sleep so the only way to fix the lag would be to keep some app running in the background that keeps the phone from sleeping. The only problem with that is that your battery life won't be as good.
why not just download voltage control or similar app and raise the minimum clock speed?
I have no lag at all. My note 2 is faster then my g3

It's not lag so much as it is a delay. On my Razr, there's no delay between pushing the power button and the screen coming on. There is a delay on the Note 2 of around a second between pushing the button and the screen coming on.
I don't think it's the lockscreen. I don't see a difference when I turn it off. My guess is the little bit of lag is for hardware reasons.
I've read that this is due to S-Voice waiting for input before the screen completely wakes up. Go into S-Voice and find the setting to wait for input on wake or something similar and turn that off. Lag should be fixed...dont have the phone yet and already giving advice, lol.

This video is for home button lag not lockscreen lag. Plu my s voice was all ready disable by home button. This thread is for lockscreen lag/delay not home button.
The Fix for me
Here is what i found turn off s-voice this what i found to fix the lag i think it is running waiting for the wake voice command
do turn it off if you dont use it did and it did the trick it is in the apps drawer so dont look for it in the settings
I thought this was generally accepted to be due to the phone entering a deep sleep and shutting off the CPU cores, thus the delay in waking up the processor and thus the display.
Will do further testing around forced wake locks and hold cpu states.
i disabled the lock screen...so much better! this phone does not pocket dial, so its not needed anyway imo.

No, this doesn't lag my S4 at all. However, I set "Disable hardware overlays" to always use GPU for screen composing (in developer options). With this option set I haven't noticed a single stutter.
Before this workaround, I used to notice microstutters here and there (it would stutter doing window animation opening up facebook notifications for example).
Word of caution: supposedly this can cause problems for some apps. The only app that has problems is quadrant
I tried that setting but it didn't seem to change anything. All I want to change about the phone is the occasional home button lag I'm experiencing.
