[Q] Restoring a Nandroid or Titanium Backup? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I'm wondering what's the best way to go about restoring my data after updating roms and switching between roms. I get that I should make nandroids before flashing roms and such. But let's say I'm just updating from an older version of a rom to a newer version, is it safe to just restore the data and cache parts of the nandroid or is it better to just restore my Titanium Backup backups for user apps? If I were to go to a different rom, would I also be able to restore data and cache from nandroid? Thanks for the help.

I would definitely go titanium. I ran through about 3 or 4 roms, some aosp some TW and I was always able to restore user app data from titanium without a hitch.

[Q] How do I restore my data / cache after wiping and flashing villainrom?

This might be a stupid question, but is there any way to get my backup restored? I just tried to restore a backup through CWM but it wiped my villainrom flash and went back to what I had before.

Is that not the whole point you backup XX try ZZZ decide you dont like it and restore the backup of XX which wipes ZZZ .
jje
yes I realized that eventually, I thought the point was to save your data like apps, themes, etc. so you can load them in the new rom. my apologies
You should not restore cache. When you boot up to a new rom, it will just redo the cache anyways.
As for Clockwork Recovery backup and restore, it does a full backup of the rom, including cache and user settings and apps. It restores back to the original rom as well.
I think you want to restore your settings and applications of your old rom into villainrom. I wouldn't recommend it as it settings for stock and custom might be different and can cause weird issues.
on that note, is there any way to access that information after flashing the new rom (to see what apps i'm missing and download them all again so I don't have to just redownload each one as I realize i need it?) without restoring the backup
nevermind I ended up just going back to my old rom, thanks for the replies guys
There is this wonderful app called Titanium Backup, it backup all your wonderful apps. This way, when you switch ROMs, you can just restore all those wonderful apps that you have been stockpiling.

[Q] samsung galaxy s 2 restoring nandroid backup

Hi guys,
I am facing a very curious and seemingly common problem.I have litening rom installed on my gs2. Now i want to change the ROM but dont want to lose my data. Taking a nandroid backup I noticed that there is a special option in CWM called advanced restore.Using that you can restore parts of your nandroid backup instead of taking a full restore.
Now my question is that, once I have installed a new ROM can I take a restore of only the data part of my nandroid backup to my current ROM? The backup was taken when I had litening ROM installed. Will it return all my apps , app data and other things as they were with litening rom to my new ROM ?
You should have used Titanium Backup to restore apps and app data, restoring system data across different ROMS is not typically recommended but can be done, it is totally up to you. Nonetheless, your best bet to restore any or all of this is not a nandroid backup, that is best for restoring an entire ROM, to restore just apps or data or whatever, use Titanium Backup. So my advice would be, create another nandroid of your new ROM, restore back to your old ROM, download Titanium backup, backup apps and data using that. Restore back to new ROM, download titanium backup and choose option, restore missing apps and data.

Most likely a stupid question.

If I backup only my data through Amon Ra, then flash a new Rom (after wiping everything) can I restore my data over the rom?
I've never tried anything like that (due to previously using CWR)
Thanks
not sure but the easy way i know how to do this is use titanium backup to back up everything and when u restore just restore the data

That sucks.
Thanks anyways
But don't restore data from one ROM to a different ROM. That can mess things up.

CWM Restore between two different ROMS

Does CWM have the capacity to run a restore from a Stock ROM while the ROM in action is Dorian RED PILL? Or would that cause infintely bad issues?
If not possible, I am interested in attempting to develop something that could allow this to take place!

What do you want to restore, the previous ROM or apps and data?

I was wanting to restore apps/data. I didn't back up my texts before I switched ROMS so I wanted to go back, back up texts then come back to R.P.
Restoring data would only work ok if the roms are very similar: same custom or stock rom base which contains almost the same apps and version. But, restoring stock data to a custom rom will most likely just give you a bootloop.
Titanium backup already has an option to selectively restore apps and data from a nandroid backup, though it doesn't fully work when changing android versions (gb to ics).
It would be great if you could make an alternative to selectively restore apps and/or data from nandroid backups using a UI.

ARGH...that's what I was thinking. I'll start looking into an alternative and see what I can come up with.

[Q] CWM infomation

Dear XDAers,
I would like to ask whether if I nandroid backup my xxlsj rom, can I restore the backup in another rom (get back my app data, like titanium backup?)? Or is it going to be back to the xxlsj rom?
And can I flash my backup (lsj) without flashing lsj then restore backup?
Thanks

yes in cwm backup & restore go to advance restore and you can restore boot, system, data, cache, sd-ext...
you can restore only data from there. But you might get fc's on some apps if you will restore data backed up in xxlsj and restore in AOSP or AOKP... may be sometimes phone sticks at boot also...
so watch what you are doing...

Alright, so doing a Nandroid backup means backing up the whole OS? When restoring the backup on AOSP or AOKP, etc, means it will still go back to the backuped ROM?

Yes if you are restoring from internal or external sd it will restore to that ROM in which you had made backup and if you go to advance restore option, you can restore data only...
