Hi everyone,
This is the first time owning a Samsung device, so the pegasusq governor is a new thing to me, I read about what it actually is on a thread but I wanted to ask to fellow S3 owners what are they using for great battery life - performance ratio?
I'm running Omega 6.0, slipstreamed loads of crap that is not needed (from the "safe to remove" thread) with Apex Launcher. I'm only using 2 homescreens, dark wallpaper, etc, the typical works to try and improve battery life.
Now the thing is, with SetCPU I'm running the default pegasusq governor ranging from 200mhz -1400mhz. Is the pegasusq governor the right choice here? Isn't it basically a variant of the OnDemand governor but Samsung proprietary for quadcore CPUs? I also recall reading a mention of S3's freezing or not waking up when it's set from the lowest underclocking point (200mhz), is that right? I've been using this for a few hours and no problems yet, but just wanted to know what are everyone elses experiences and what's the best configuration that has worked individually for you!
Cheers! Hope I complied with the rules, I did do a search but didn't find anything of this nature apart from a few separate questions!
I use the same governor, 100Mhz - 1704Mhz. No issues. Works great.
Siyah kernel is using pegasusq so i think it is the best governer there is. if you're on stock kernel or lowest underclocking is 200mhz but in custom kernels you can use 100mhz.
I have set my SetCPU to 100mhz - 1200mhz and undervolting all 18-steps to -50mv. I seldom reboot my phone but not encounter any freeze on boot
You should try tweaks for improving the battery life and peformance. Like supercharger, zipalling , random build.prop tweaks.... Etc xD but yeah use the samsungs "for quad core"
Thank you for the prompt replies everyone!
I remember with my Desire the whole development community was pretty much "set in stone" if you will, so it was really easy to choose a kernel etc.
Is there a kernel that you recommend? Is anyone using a "Screen Off" profile without any problems? If so what's the range you have it set at? That's what I was mostly scared as I remember on my Desire the lockscreen or taking calls would lag quite a bit but obviously this is a different beast altogether!
I'm also using AutoKiller Memory with Extreme Settings and some tweaks applied as well.
I use Siyah clocked 100-1704 screen on. 100-300 screen off. No issues.

I set mine to 100-600 not having any issues, when reiveng notification/phone calls doesn't lag at all. Just don't use "power saving" option.

3rd party apps don't to any good to battery life it only consumes more(for me) cause it's always running in your background which consumes memory and also battery life.
stock task manager is pretty good, been use it always. Closing all apps and clearing memory

Nah, Autokiller isnt a task manager.
Basically, Android automatically kills empty processes (etc) at specified RAM levels. It does this anyway. But on High end RAM packed devices, these values are too low to be of any use as the phone will seldom hit that low a level of free RAM.
Autokiller simply adjusts these values to be more useful for high end devices.
Actually, you don't need autokiller to do this. You can do it in an init.d script although I've not tested this on the SGS3 as I haven't seen a need.
Here is an example I wrote for my Desire AOSP ROM:
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
echo "8192,16384,19200,23040,25600,30720" > /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/minfree
Default SGS3 is:
Code:
8192, 10240, 12288, 14336, 16387, 25600
These are for:
Foreground App, Visible App, Secondary Server, Hidden App, Content Provider, Empty App

My View:
Its CONFUSING, Thats All I Can Say.I Wouldn't Reccomand You Guys To Upgrade Upto ICS,If Your Having No Issues
As You Can Watch Movies Even Without ICS Movie App
Play Songs Without So Called ICS Walkman Music App
Browse Pictures Well In GB Gallery, By Taking The Open Soruce Android Market Wide Range Of Gallerys Are Present

Before I start, you should know one thing, when writing pros and cons, never be as subjective and biased as you have been. Most of your issues are totally device related and while some are, they can easily be fixed rather than whining about.
I don't know how you have a Laggy UI but ICS on my S runs smoother than my dad's S3. So make sure you do a full reset even if it is painful and most of the times, it's bad apps that are solely responsible. So try things before you reach a conclusion. For all I know, a percentage of people have it and NOT ALL so it is definitely device dependant.
Gallery works great for me, get burst shot mode using Camera ZoomFX, use different power Saver app from Play Store. There are loads. Benchmarks dropped! Are you kidding me? Did you check figures or played an actual game to understand that? Battery Backup is easy 1day+ with WiFi or 3G on the whole time. No stutter for me despite using Chrome in the background. Low RAM is your mental state and 200MB of RAM is good enough for every app. Haven't faced a low RAM issue yet
Only Bluetooth Audio, low WiFi signal and a few more are true issues rest there is nothing else. Next time, PLEASE READ facts before you become judgemental and tell people not to upgrade to something better only because you didn't try hard enough

Yes as a4rocks mentioned already, those issues are specific to your device and I have none of the issues that you have mentioned except for the lack of wifi direct.
My phone is now smoother than on GB with ZERO lag.
Thanks for summarizing this. This is useful for people like me who are still debating whether to take the plunge.
btw, any updates on the camera quality after the upgrade?
Sent from my LT26i using xda app-developers app
the only issue i had was wifi signal dropping, but somehow after a few days it seems a lot better, doesn't cut out at all now, don't know how but it fixed itself!.
no lag at all, very happy with ics upgrade and def wouldn't consider going back to gb
for me the only annoying thing in ICS is the slow launch of some apps specially the "Phone" Application every time i leave the app for more than 5 minutes. it launches slower than GB takes 2-3 seconds to load. its very annoying otherwise everything is good and i am very happy with the upgrade!
I flashed the original firmware that came with my phone yesterday then updated to ICS using SUS + factory reset.
It seems updating using SUS is much better than flashtools, everything is working as it should and the battery is even better.
PS: not rooted only uninstall unneeded apps.

You Are Saying Pinch In Homescreen To Float Widget Is Not Laggy????
Well I Use 12 Widgets Which Coz Lags,But In GB It Was Fine...With All Those 12 Widgets
And really Annoying Is Phone Dialer App Take 3-4 Sec To Load
Yse Battery Backup Is OK For Me
And As For Camera I Use Procapure,Camera 360,360 Panaroma,Paper Camera,Fast Burst Mode...etc

Thank You For Your Concern,If You Can Upload An Only Home Screen Video To Prove Its Smooth Specially With 12 Widgets!!!
Umm, see here's the thing, most of the issues are quite easily solvable. There are some issues which have irked me and chief among them is Loss of camera features just to put the Sony camera which I did not like one bit. But then most of the issues aren't really there. Its actually quite unbelievable for see to even imagine ICS lagging considering how it runs in mine. And I have 15 widgets and am a total widget hungry guy and 2 of them are Sony weather widgets but no lag and I am talking stock CH firmware. Apologies but my bandwidth in India is absolutely ridiculous so it will take almost a day to upload a video and I just can't get enough of it but I really want to. Phone dialer app open is 2-3 seconds for me and could be faster. Will move to a custom ROM for that. Power saver app is just stupid and the first thing I did after rooting was to remove it. Do try alternate power saving applications. Much more worth it. Trust me, the widget is neither gimmicky nor nice. Regarding games, I don't really play high graphics dependent games but despite underclocking my processor, I get smooth games and love every bit of it. I was just saying because some parts of your thread is misleading especially for new members. Edit it accordingly and you can remove Laggy UI and bits like these which is a small population's problem. Lets share the bigger problems.

How about the quicklaunch function (on ICS)?.. I mean is the launch and capture feature working flawlessly for you? I have tried three ICS roms so far with full wipe/clean install including my own region ICS rom but i have buggy quicklaunch functioning in all of them. It doesn't work sometimes, say twice out of 10 trials!
Apart from that, i have no issues with ICS so far, which is faster/smoother, except few minor bugs like in the timer app. Battery life is almost the same as .76 GB. I do notice occaisonal lags/ FC on selecting no background apps (developer options) though, solved by reverting back to standard limit.

Thank you for advice,i was looking for some solution
Ok let me tell you how I updated my device
1)copied all my vid aud files in pc
2) from settings formatted the internal storage
3) updated with PCC from .75 GB
So flashing CH doesn't void guarantee?sorry I don't know much about Flashing
And I must say,
Pinching in homescreen to Float Widget is laggy even from GB
And I really thought it would fix in ICS
So I'll show I video as soon as possible
Well I had no offence pal.
And well in other blogs and post people are going crazy with lags

I know man, don't worry. I may have been harsh myself too and apologies for it. But fact is the problems are rectifiable. I don't think you would like to unlock your bootloader (which most probably MIGHT not void warranty but gives you awesome stuff) but if you do, it would be the best thing, whatever small lags that are there totally goes away with a custom ROM like KA Xperia SSpeed. But Flashtool doesn't void warranty and you can try and flash another region's firmware to check if it could improve. Do a full wipe and start afresh. Would give you the best experience. No need for a video, I understand what you are trying to say and it might happen. But this is more device and config dependent then the ICS update as a whole
@Anime13
I too had buggy fast capture when I was on Swiss ICS firmware without factory reset. But a few days back I flashed Indian ICS firmware after a factory reset and now my phone works perfect. Fast capture works as good as GB now. Works every single time.
On ICS you cant change the incoming call notification and the sms/email notification tone volumes independantly. I'm fairly certain you could change these settings independantly under GB. Can anyone still on GB confirm this?

Yeah at first i thought so, but then when i flashed back to GB .76 the camera button (quicklaunch) works perfectly. Played with it about 40-50 times without fail! A couple of guys also have confirmed this problem on the ICS thread, so i guess it might be ICS problem.. but if you say yours is working fine, it makes me wonder whether i should try the SUS update for myself !
Just noticed the notification LED doesn't blink with new emails/sms/missed call. Apparently known Sony bug, is it working for anyone?
How I can see frame "fps" on apps with my s2 ?
Hey can i ask why you need such a thing?
Any way here you go Fps Test
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...arch_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5mcHMiXQ..
<Edit> I think i did not understand you you want check your fps on the app whats even more strange because only app dev need what stuff instead i can only give you this advice
Instead of using FPS as a measure of performance. On 4.0.* you can enable 'Strict Mode' under Developer Options in settings to flash the screen if heavy tasks are performed on the UI thread. These will be the kind of tasks and performance drops you want to look out for. Good luck mate
Hey guys...
I can't help but notice fps/crack/lag/stutter when i scroll through settings and i think it's time i share this because no matter what i do it's still there.
When i'm in the launcher, everything's so smooth but in settings it's bad..especially when comparing to cm10/10.1 where scrolling through settings is a breeze...
Have anyone else noticed this? How did you fix it?
Thanks.
Btw i'm on Ultima 8.1.2 and [email protected] cpu+640mhz gpu but it doesn't matter really, the kernel/rom combo doesn't affect this.

You want the settings for best smoothness?
1.install siyah
2.change governor to lulzactiveq andchange scheduler to cfq
3.enable gpu rendering + disable hardware overlay in developer options.
4.set the minimum gpu clock to 266mhz in stweaks.
5.set touch boost to 1000 mhz in stweaks.

Wrong you are not wanted .
Do you not give a thought for XDA Developeres forum and mods that have to move countless wrongly posted items .
Just because you don't want them in the correct section and is totally against what XDA exists for its not some fix my phone forum that you and other school-kids can mess about with .
No wonder so many senior experienced members steer clear of this forum .

And what does this have to do with the topic? You can lock the CPU to 1400MHz and the GPU to 800MHz, kill your battery, and it will still lag in the aforementioned situation.
If you actually pay attention while scrolling in the Setting page, you will see that the lag/hickup will only happen once any of the On/Off switches come into display and get rendered, if you scroll without any of the switches in view it will be smooth. I can already imagine what causes this; they're fetching the status of the switches in the rendering thread and it simply causes an overhead on the rendering fluidity. No matter what you do you won't be able to get rid of that design problem. Hundreds of other apps are completely fluid in the meantime.

Nice find AndreiLux.
I really didn't think it was a kernel or settings issue because i run at 200-1704 for cpu and 266-640 for gpu both with reasonable scaling settings so i think i'm fine.
Also true,in almost any other app everything is smooth as it should be...
So in conclusion a dev or sammy must fix the settings apk not to lag?

Try activating "disable hw overlays" and "force gpu rendering" from developer options....it helps me...

Thanks for that.
Well, force gpu rendering sticks but disable hw overlays doesn't stick after reboot and i really don't know if it actually does something!

Oops,my mind totally ignored the word "settings" in your post.
@andrei
Nice find Andrei. Any solutions for that?

The settings need to be reprogrammed. I tried to get rid of that lag because I thought it was because of the kernel, but then I saw that it only happens when the switches come into display. It's stupid but you don't do anything about it. I don't even know if AOSP has the same issue or if it's a Samsung thing.
It's the same problem as with Tapatalk, it's a badly designed pile of crap and that's why it's so laggy, no matter the performance of your phone.
Take Flipboard, Reddit News, much more complex apps, but they are properly coded and thus fluid.

It's ok man...

I see...
I think on AOSP scrolling is smoother in settings..
Anyone to confirm this?
What should we do now?
Report to sammy?Ask an experienced developer to try to fix it?

Hundreds of other apps are completely fluid in the meantime.

yes, i can confirm. AOSP is 100,000 times smoother than Sammy.
edit
What i have found FIXES this issue is to run a LIVE WALLPAPER not a very graphic intensive one, but something like phase beam, or nexus 4 LWP. What this does is, it keeps the CPU fresh and instantly ready to render. Try it if you don't believe me.
download this LWP just for a test: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...2lkd2FzYWJpLmxpdmV3YWxscGFwZXIubmV4dXNkb3QiXQ.. and in settings put everything on MAX. and set the LWP. Now go try to find some lag
hello to all, i noticed that my redmi note 3 pro KATE ( i am on globerom 8.1.1.0 stable) has the minimum clock for big cluster, setted at 883mhz , and little cluster 691mhz BUT i can select on kernel adiutor the min freq of 400/ 400 mhz.
QUESTION 1 about freqNow i am with L speed app , and applied battery profile, but i don't understand why it does not automatically set the value to the MINIMUM POSSIBLE. Is there a reason?
Is there any CON to set the minimum cloto to cpu at 400mhz? i don't understand why xiaomi.eu and globerom modders did not set this freq to lowest possible, is it maube harmfull for the device?
should i have to set it by myself in kernel adiutor app? please help me to use this app, i just suppose i must apply 400mh setting, THEN choose to apply to boot ( there is a toggle).
What if i set at 400 and NOT toggle it?
QUESTION 2 about differences L speed and gov tuner flashable zip.I am sorry to admit that i'm not such skilled into android development and i have difficulties to understand terms like init.d or script meanings.....
For what i know i found pre installedon globerom the gov-tuner project zip file, then i discovered that that optimizations to the GOVERNOR, are also incorporated in another app called L speed. so i uninstalled gov tuner in this way:
1) entered into console, and entered the letter to disable gov tuner. ok,
2)then rebooted into recovery and flashed the zip for uninstaller.
DELETED! and i can say with that mod my battery life was really good almost perfect.
then i installed L speed, but still being a nice app with lots of features and explanatiions for EACH of them, i just setted overall provile to BATTERY, and cheched some other tweaks....EXCLUDING THE ONES that are described as battery wasting.
Then i asked to officiial thread if i have to reboot to apply, they said no... but it's PREFERABLE. OK I REBOOT.
by now i have worse battery life ( much worse) and i can't understand why.
I tested with console if gov tuner is still present, but NO. so there shoudn't be any conflict at all
sorry....if this 2nd question is THE BIGGEST ONE, but i really need to read someone suggestion and a simple explanation to understand if it's better l speed or gov tuner to me.
L speed seems very much powerful and can mod much more things... but is it safe? maybe there are so much options and i choosed 1 or 2 too much, and now i see bad battery life. but it's nearly impossible what is the option that causes me this.
And last important thing.... is it the same thing to implement these script or optimizations at the boot (i think gov tuner do it so) or after the boot like do L speed? ( i noticed into app a setting to choose 10 seconds after boot to apply scripts, in fact i see after each boot a notification about these applied scritps)
Hello,
sorry I can only answer question 1 since I dont use Lspeed.
Set it to 400MhZ Dude!
Doesnt harm your device, its still not laggy or anything.
Set apply on boot option and you`ll be golden.
RN3 has awesome battery life just stock. If you want more, install skynet. (was on xda, moved to google+)
There is even a guide somewhere out there for setting it to 400Mhz.
Cheers mate
