Hello everyone I'm ChongWiz, since I got my first android device in early 2011 (Xperia X8) I used XPERIA smartphones because I loved the UI and the design of Sony. Now, I'm planning to upgrade from Xperia Sola to an HTC One X+, and I'm planning to use an AOSP based rom on it because I really like pure Android looks since ICS was out. There are two things that I'm afraid of with this phone:
1) Gaming performance on Gameloft, and other really high graphics games
2) Battery drain/overheat on AOSP based roms.
Please confirm/bust my fears because I really don't want to get disappointed with my phone like I did with my Sola!
I would use the phone for gaming/watching movies browsing the web, emailing, phoning, and chatting.
Thanks in advance, ChongWiz
From my own experience i would say dont worry about point 1,best phone i ever owned, point 2 i dont know never tried aosp roms

Hey guys,
New to the board, new to the Ray. I used to frequent the Arc, Play, Nexus S, and Desire S boards under a different user name but I've not posted in a while so I've since forgotten my User info, so thought I'd make a new one.
Anyways...
I got my Ray, bought it out unlocked, and unlocked the boot loader. I was really excited to get my Cyanogen on and enjoy this beautiful device. Only...Cyanogen Rom for the Ray is HORRIBLE. The Camcorder is broken, the live wallpapers option is non-existant, and the control widget is completely useless for brightness control. Seriously, WTF is wrong with that ROM its is absolute garbage.
I can understand the Ice Cream Sandwich ROM being bug ridden, its early time, but at the very least I expected Cyanogen 7 to be fully functional. Geez.
Those are the only 2 ROMS I've tried so far, the rest look boring. MIUI I am not interested in, and outside anything that slightly alters the Stock firmware there is NOTHING AVAILABLE?
Where are the ROMS? Where is the support? Where are the quality developers?
All we have are half backed ideas, ROMS that don't work properly, and nothing else.
Maybe we should start up a fund and maybe donate a few Rays to some good developers that can actually provide because at this point, there is no point in using anything other then Stock Firmware.
The Ray is a capable device, similar to the Arc, there should be more support. I miss the great support that the Nexus S and the Desire S recieved. Especially the Desire S, the Developer from that board are truly amazing. Proxuser and Super kid were really really good developers, and we need developers like them who dedicate the time needed for quality ROMS. Our support is a joke compared to what they have, and I think we need to either put up some money or some incentive, like maybe donating a few Rays, to get the ball rolling.
I agree with you, it's pretty disappointing.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure the differences between Ray and Arc are minimal, so it's quite surprising that Arc gets tons of support and Ray gets basically nothing. Even more that inferior devices such as the Minis are more supported. Maybe the device is not selling well and not many people have it? I don't know.
Obviously I'm just a tinkerer and not a developer, so I don't know how hard it could be to port Arc stuff to Ray, but yeah, this devices needs more support. How to get it? I have no idea.
I think the stock rom is pretty good, I don't find any major problem with it, it look pretty good and it's decently fast (with Supercharger it's much better), so for now I don't really feel the need to install an unofficial one.
Also, many Arc mods to the interface work on Ray too, so check out those forums too and see if there is something you like. I installed the Xperia styled torch widget and the modded battery icon (with percentage) from the Arc board and they worked fine.

Re-reading my initial post I may have sounded a bit harsh. Its just very very disappointing coming from a device that had a TON of support to one that has virtually none.
I will take your advice and check out some of the Arc's mods.
I've owned a ton of Android devices (Xperia x10, Captivate, 2 Xperia Arcs, Nexus S, another Xperia Arc, HTC Desire Z, HTC Desire S, and finally the Xperia Ray) and this is by far the worst support I've ever seen.

I agree with you!...even my previous worst phone...Se X8...got tons of support ...i am really disappointed seeing Ray being put aside...

What are you guys on anyway? The X8, since it was mentioned, was released 1 year ago. With 1.6 on it... there have been, what 4 different versions? And Gingerbread is sub par on it.
Regarding Adreno's note on HTC Devices.... As you are aware HTC makes phones for many companies, including T-mobile and Google. So most of these devices have almost the same internals. Hence development on those devices is really easy (you just copy paste files from one rom to another and bam you got your kang).
So on to the Ray... It was released 4 months ago. It has a different screen than most phones (480x854) so porting any generic rom onto it requires some smali editing skills. And... There is NO AOSP release for Xperia devices... at least so far. What makes other devices so "different" than the Xperia's is that some of them have been build on AOSP.
For example the DesireZ - Tmobile G2. One has Sense, the other is built on AOSP. So you have 2 completely different builds for the same device.
And some food for thought... Sony Ericsson needs about 6 months, an enormous team of developers and a ****load of money to build their own Firmware based on Already released Code. What makes you think you will see something "new" from some amateurs in less than 6 months time?
Yes i have built my "own" Rom based on the Stock Rom for the Xperia Active. I dont even consider my self an amateur. I am a total noob.
So, to finish this rant, since development for these devices is young, yet the android system as it is, is quite mature, I would recommend you to assist the people who have already developed a Rom for the Ray, in order to make something good from it. Creating a Thread in the development section, complaining about the development being "dissapointing"... then i rest my case.

I personally don't want "assisting" of the developers that have been working on the Ray thus far, as I said my original post I don't believe that they are up to the job.
I want to entice more talented developers. What can we do to bring experienced developers that know what they are doing to the Ray?
At this point, rooting and unlocking the bootloader is pretty pointless. You are screwing yourself out of over the air updates, and there is nothing that can fill the void from the development community thus far. What. is. the. point.
This is where you are wrong.
What do you actually want from a Rom? Speed? Stability? Battery Life?
I have managed to do all these with no real coding at all. The Xperia Active with DooMLoRD's Kernel and various tweaks that i found on XDA, when on max OC ranks between the Sensation and the SGS2. Both are Dual core with a far better GPU than the Adreno 205. Oh and the OC is completely bulletproof.
For the time being, the best developers for these devices is Sony herself. It is stable, and battery efficient. You on the other hand can make it more "personalized" and fitting to your needs... Gaming-browsing... whatever...

Even if I had just Cyanogen working properly I'd be happy.
On the Desire S board Superkid had Ice Cream Sandwich ported (AOSP) to the desire S within 2 weeks, only being able to work on it on the weekends. Thats like 6 days.
On top of that, he had everything working flawlessly other than the camera by week 3.
Thats the kind of development I am talking about. Imagine how hard that was.
We don't have anything like that over here.
No it wasnt that hard. I say again. You need to be able to edit THE WHOLE DAMN BASE, if you want it in a different resolution than the one it was intended.
Yes some guys are simply amazing at what they do, but as i said earlier, most HTC devices use the same chipsets, boards, cpu's, modems etc. Sony uses a board (codenamed mogami i think) specific to the mini's. It uses a different one for the Ray, Play etc.
You will almost never have something like that. Be happy that the Cyanogenmod Team is actually working on these devices.
Hell, the mini's dont even have a MIUI build. Its either CM7 or Stock. But honestly i couldnt care less. I got bored of flashing a new rom every 2 weeks, just to see nothing different. The only difference was Sense 2.1 Sense 3.0 Sense 3.5. The rest ROMS use the same old AOSP build with an ADW launcher or a LPP on top... Big deal.
Now if someone gets sense on these devices... i'd be impressed

why not HTC One V, it has similar but better hardware and ICS 4.0.
most important, it is cheap.

Cyanogen Mod 9?
In answer to your question yes ICS is available for the desire S in the form of Cyanogen Mod 9.
Whilst I know other roms are available such as Ice Cold Sandwich they all appear to be at least loosely based on CM9.
Although it is described as alpha I have installed it on both my desire s as well as a friends and it works without issue on both devices perfectly all of the hardware is now functional with the exception of the FM radio but there are plenty of online radio apps, or you could just use the MP3 player.
The only small issue you may encounter were problems with games such as temple run although this has been fixed in the latest release (09/05/2012)
I have owned the desire s for just under a year now, it is my first android phone but from experience of viewing friends phones it is still one of the superior android devices on the market. Whilst it does not have the dual core processor or huge amounts of ram of the current flagship phones there is a large community behind the device as there is the desire HD and Z. Therefore there are regular roms available for it. On another note in terms of the phones power, I have not found a single app or game my phone cannot run well including full 3d games such as the pocket version of Minecraft.
In terms of battery life after a year of use I can still manage about 2 days with sparing use and a sense based rom or a whole day with heavy use on a sense rom.
With the new CM9 I am managing 2 days of medium to heavy use and 4 days of sparing use. I believe this is due to the lack of the sense ui.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
There appears to be a big lack of development for this phone. Just wondering if anyone expects things to pickup? I just come from a galaxy nexus and while I know that that it's one of the most favored phones from the developers side, I'm currently disappointed by the lack of options wet currently have. There is like only 3 ICS Roms and 3 ICS kernels (1 only has OC ability) to choose from.
Love this phone though.

It would be a dream if Huexx had a Sony Xperia S to develop a great rom like Zeus ROM for Optimus Black (i have one, trying to sell it). An incredible and organized work, with a great presence in the comunity, organized changelogs and constant updates! He also developed a nice kernel for CM9 (that original kernel from Cyanogen guys is bugged and crappy) that turned CM9 almost a usable ROM (not for me, since i really like listening music and podcasts with my phone). He did a really incredible work with Zeus! Should we ask him if he have interest in a Xperia S and donate one to him? XD haha! But really guys! Give a look at his work!
Yea...i two u man on dis...!!

mainly because the people have got this phone on a contract there for the bootloader cant be unlocked as of this moment until setool or some other software manage to enable fastboot via testpoint. (exactly the reason i cant develop for this phone atm)
Soon many Arc/Arc S devs will come and support this phone.
Once we get CM9 and CM10 going you should see more development.

Hehehe on the arc a lot of dev,s are gone to htc/s3.
A few teenagers are left there.
I'll try some serving during the summer, we'll see.. that's why I'm switching ROMs and making all these changes all the time, I'm learning about the phone's limits...

this is what concers me too.. i started with galaxy s then galaxy s2.. but after that i switched to moto xoom, then galaxy tab 10.1 and then temprorarly galaxy ace.. i used samsung most of the time because of the unlocked bootloaders but i could never get used to the build quality and never got away from the screen burns of the amoled screen..
so my next preference was htc sensation XE.. this was the perfect phone for me definetely.. i had gread develeopment (since it was backed up by original sensation days), great sound quality and somehow quallcomm CPU and GPU was better than the arm based ones... i know the benchmarks say the opposite but i was using my sensation XE at 1.2 Ghz by setcpu and it was still fast enough and it never refused to play any game i thrown at.. but dust got under the screen after a few months and i sold it..
so my next was htc one x and it was a disaster with the greatest screen i have ever seen.. it was a joy to play with it but the problems were unsolveable for daily usage.. and no matter how much i love playing with my phone, messing things most of the time i need it as a ready and steady phone for daily usage.. with that heat, lack of S-off and other problems i sold it too..
so novadays i was looking at the galaxy note or s3 but then i decided to be realistic.. i love playing my games on the consoles and my computer.. so gamewise any phone would handle me because my expectations are low.. what i want is smooth web browsing, very good audio quality to listen lossless music and a good camera to shoot good photos and HD videos (not like a pro camera but at least sharp enough to make the moment freeze forever to remember later).. so i decided to go for nexus.. but then in a store i realised every galaxy phone had screen burns.. i know there are lots of ways to prevent it but still this time i made a promis and have to live with my next phone 1.5 year at least and i dont want to watch my leds die slowly and seperately in front of my eyes everyday..
so i decided to go back to sensation XE.. the most problem-free experience for me.. i care so much about graphic performance.. i think any CPU can handle anything novadays but GPU makes the difference.. so the adreno 220 in sensation XE was more than enough with the help of low-res screen and it was also OCable.. but then i saw a friends xperia s.. that changed everything.. until then i did not even look at any sony device.. not even accidentely..
now i really can not decide.. i have never been into any sony topics before so i am trying to learn but i guess on the development side xperia S is no match for sensation / XE..
so i am kind of scared about the high resolution of the screen.. XE is getting old and has only 768 mb of RAM but it has S-off and lots of developers will keep it as a legacy device.. besides i do not have to worry about warranty since there is S-off...
on the other hand soy seems to be promising with this brand new device and it seems like they use the hardware better than HTC.. it gives 37.5 FPS on the nenamark2 even with that 720p screen.. but is there any chance that i keep the warranty even after i unlock the bootloader... and what about the sound quality? i know sensation XE was not the best but at leats the sound is clear and there is beats audio.. and "most importantly" will there be any more development? i dont want to buy a device that will be forgotten after 3-4 months...
i know i wrote very long but i decided to ask.. because i have been reading for 3 weeks non-stop and i am more cunfused than i started.. its like android world's nature.. every device has their adventages and disadvanteges on each other.. like a perfect balance and it is really hard to choose sometimes..
^ you can re-locked the bootloader. and here in Indonesia, they (Sony's Service) dont even bother checking the bootloader f it's hardware problems (yellow tints). so i guess it's not an issue, but different country, different policy.
and for development.. SXS has, modded stock roms (2), cm9 and cm10 in development (bug fixing, etc), and official miui. what's more do you want? i prefer this than many development which only modified stock roms, modified miui, modified cm. it's just me though..
actually i prefer one good custom (or stock) rom than lots of roms.. but for example sensation and one x has a camera mod which let them shoot videos with 20Mbps (or 40) and take photos with 0 compression.. and i can tell; lowering the compression value looks like a must for xperia S too.
or you can OC the GPU to get more performance on 3d apps or games.. these are more important than having lots of custom roms in my opinion.. because since ICS came out every custom rom is similar to each other.
what i want to do is generally about unleashing the potential of the hardware.. like in the camera mod example.. i mean, the camera lens is still there but the software uses it much better with a little touch of a good developer..

First of all, hello to everyone in this scene. This is an old phone but still quite amazing and I'm having loads of fun flashing stuff onto it.
I've been an android user for around 2 years, my first device was the GT-P1000 galaxy tab 7''. I've had a Galaxy Gio for about 1 year now and an Ace for the last 4 months. I've recently got my hands on a X10 (which has a broken screen and usb port ruined but still works ) and I've been trying ROMs for the last few weeks but I am unable to set for one.
I've tried CM10, CM9, Oodie Prime X MIUI, X10S, Feravolt's GB ROM and now I'm on M&M's MIUI. I'm just wondering what would the best ROM (on your opinion) be for this device in terms of smoothness, speed and functions. I'm in love with MIUI for a while and also CM7 but I think they don't perform that great on this device for some reason.
Now for a few questions:
Is there any way to make Cronmod int2ext+ work on this device?
What is the cause for the WLOD? I've had one for no reason apparently.
I've been searching for like a week, maybe I suck at searches but I can't find answers for these questions -.-'
Also, is it just me of the X10 seems to need to be handled more carefully than other devices when flashing stuff?
I guess I'm just a Noob at Sony devices, my experience with android is pretty much Samsung only even though I've messed a bit with Huawei, HTC and Alcatel in the past.
My pick for smoothness, speed and functions(basic)

Well i think donutHD is the beat pick for "smoothness, speed and functions". and it really has no bugs so try it out:smoothness, speed and functions:smoothness, speed and functions
Yup donut was great.
my favorite was dixperia 7 and later techdevils meego rom: light, fast, ugly, last to be solved^^
I am using cm10, the xperia nxt themed one by vashishta at the moment. they are all pretty awsome

Hello guys,
I recently got enough money for buying a new phone so I looked on the web and I founded the Xperia SP and the S3 and I might think that they should be good for my needness. Well the only thing I personally don't know is which device to choose... I don't know if I should go for more community and bugfree CM11 and a camera but with the "laggy" Touchwiz UI (or at least, many people are saying that) and a slower CPU and GPU or should I go for more speed, more premium materials but for the snappy but ugly Xperias Timescape and a little bit buggy CM11... Well I hope You guys can help me which to decide
The most thing I only do is playing Clash Of Clans, listening to music, use social networks and sometime play Asphalt 8 and ofc, experiment with ROMs
Thanks to everyone
Anyone? Thanks
Why SP? If you go for Xperia ZR, which is almost the same but with 2GB RAM, the choice is almost certainly Xperia ZR, the bugs are rare, and KitKat is officially released to the device. If you don't mind sacrificing the amount of internal storage, that is.
