Help recovering soft-bricked(?) phone - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
Been struggling with GF's S3 for a couple days now..
One night her unrooted S3 wouldnt start, its just stuck in bootloop or with a dead android on the screen.
I can get it in android system recovery mode and in download mode så I suppose its not hard bricked...
Ive tried Odin3 (all versions) with different stock firmwares. Hers is the international version bought in Australia (we live in Norway so cant get a new one on warranty..)
As said; tried different firmware in Odin with no luck, tried recovery files in Odin, no luck, tried wiping/factory reset from android recovery etc.
In recovery the error says "e: failed to mount /system (no such file or dir)
Since its unrooted I cant install a custom rom through CWM.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

What does download mode say?
What's the odin error message?

Since you are still on Pure Stock , you could just walk in and give to the phone to the service centre ... if you are still under warranty?....

a losse usb connection? may be? if you can enter downloade mode, try all the usb ports on pc and flash a stock rom. installed drivers? stopped kies in the background?

[Q] Samsung S3 Custom ROM stuck in Bootloop

Hi,
I've had my S3 on a custom ROM for about 2 month now with no problems, this morning it fell out of my pocket and hit the ground, when i picked it up it was restarting (not a problem it's done this many times before). Except it was stuck on the SAMSUNG S3 I9300 Logo.
I can't get into Recovery mode (Power, Home and Volume-Up) but i can get into Download mode (Power, Home and Valume Down).
When i do this it displays
Product Name:
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Custom
I've tried to flash it back to a Stock Rom from Sammobile and i've made sure that i'm using the correct Stock Rom and i've also tried using a mx.pit file which i believe is the correct one, i have a 16gb version and the mx.pit file i used is GT-I9300_mx_20120220.pit
When i try to flash with just the Stock Rom it says there is no partition PIT and when i use the Partition PIT and select re-partition in ODin 3.07 it just hangs in Get PIT for mapping.
After this i am stuck and don't know what else to think of.
Can anyone help?
Try This

anyone? i come to XDA because everytime ive ever had an enquiry or technical problem with anything, you guys ALWAYS know what to do, and have always helped me get through my android problems, there has to be one of you out there....even with a suggestion? any intake would help. Thanks again. Kes
Did you root by CF-Root? Did you happen to flash the wrong one? Erica one of the XDA tv killed her touchscreen by flashing the note2 cf root.
Anyways, use Kies for the firmware initialization or Odin a stock rom, whichever works for you. Be sure to have it in download mode for Odin tho

Thanks for the quick reply! yes. I think I might have flashed the wrong rom I have tried both Kies and Odin. Kies can't seem to find the device (I had already installed all Usb drives/updates prior to the root), and Odin fails every time

Hi mate, i have a galaxy S3 19300 with O2 (UK)
so what can you get into at the moment? Recovery? Download mode?
Firstly when you run Odin on the computer, make sure that all the Kies related processes are not running (open Task Manager and kill anything with Kies in the name). Then assuming you can put the phone into Download mode (Hold vol-down, power and home together until you see the Samsung logo), do that, open Odin on the computer and then connect the phone. It should show up ok in Odin. Then you can flash whichever ROM you wish, make sure you choose the correct ROM for your device.

Yes ive been putting the device into download mode, then using Odin to flash the rom. Problem im having is everytime ive tried to flash the rom, it fails right at the end, and i have tried different roms/different versions of Odin. The only Odin version i have found work was an older version, it is the only one that turns yellow in the 'com' box when i plug the device in. All other versions (like 3.07) turn blue not yellow
Blue in the com box in ODIN 3.07 is ok:
you should have something like '<ID:0/006> Added!!' in the message panel.
Try flashing a recent JB rom with ODIN 3.07. If that doesnt work, try an ICS rom.
If its failing again, post the output messages here.
Also, when you boot into download mode, what does it say in the top left - device id, custom binary etc....

Lol thats good to hear. Ive just tried it with Odin 3.07 and it failed, this is what was in the box:
<ID:0/003> cache.img
<ID:0/003> hidden.img
<ID:0/003> recovery.img
<ID:0/003> modem.bin
<ID:0/003> FAIL!
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
ok, I'd try :
Uninstall Kies if you have it installed. (leave the drivers).
Try turning off any antivirus/firewall....
Try running ODIN as Admin.
See what happens...

Just uninstalled Kies, turned off antivirus/firewalls, didnt know how to run Odin as Admin. I downloaded a different JB version, and it worked, but now the phone is stuck on the 'samsung galaxy s3 - GT-19300' screen, this is definitely a step forward, but still not quite there
Cool
ok, now boot into recovery vol up + home + power
when in recovery, choose factory reset or wipe data & cache, not sure what the wording is....
to navigate in recovery, use vol up & vol down and power button to choose.

[Q] SOFT BRICKED - How to reset custom binary?

Hello!
I soft bricked my Samsung Galaxy s3 GT-I9300
I don't know how...
I tried flashing cutom roms, stock roms and kernels...nothing works
ODIN says: NAND write start!! Then it fails everytime.
So i'm looking forward to send it back to the service centre as it is supposedly still on warranty. To benefit from the warranty, the custom binary download should be "No".
My phone can still go into download mode, recovery mode is inaccessible.
In download mode it sayS:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-I9300
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: Yes (5 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: Custom
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
Is there any way I can reset the custom binary download to "No" ?
PS: According to some videos on YouTube, USB jigs only get the phone in download mode, it does NOT reset the custom binary download counter.
Please help me, thank you.

Sorry, you can only use triangle away before failure. After failure, there is nothing that anyone can do.
Please let this be a lesson to people. Keep on top of your Custom download with Triangle away

[Q] Boot and Disk Partition Problems with GT-I9300 (Samsung Galaxy S III )

Everything that happened:
1) I rooted my GT-I9300 using ODIN v3.07 and CWM Recovery
2)I installed zip of Resurrection Remix Kitkat ROM for S3 using CWM
3) I hated it to the core!
4)I flashed the official stock ROM of 4.3 JB using ODIN
5) I realized that USB Debugging was off!
6) My phone gets stuck at the Samsung logo and doesn't even load into recovery mode!
7) It boots into download mode, I flash the 4.1.2 JB ROM for S3 using ODIN
8)The Samsung logo appears, disappears and then again appears! This goes on forever!!
9)This time it boots into Android Recovery and displays the error: E: failed to mount data (Invalid Argument) cant find /data
10) The phone restarts and continues the boot-looping!!
11) I try to restore it with Kies3 using Firmware Upgrade and Initialization
12) It upgrades the firmware to 4.3 JB but the things that happened in NO. 6 continue!
13) I realised its time for the xda people to help me out!!
Things I have:
1) My Bricked Samsung Galaxy S III (International) GT-I9300
2) USB Cable
3) A Windows 7 PC with 2GB RAM
4) An Internet Connection
Can someone please explain what has happened to my phone and what should I do to get it back on stock ROM?
Please help me as I dont want to buy a new phone!
Note: If you have 16 GB of I9300, apply this guide
I think you can restore your device via repartition with a PIT file. I uploaded Odin and PIT file that I use. You can download it from attachments
You should install this ROM via PIT file; http://samsung-updates.com/details/25147/Galaxy_S_3_International/GT-I9300/TUR/I9300XXUGNB6.html
Make sure select PIT file in Odin before installation.
I live in India. Can you suggest an INU or INS rom?
I flashed my phone with PIT file and (INS_I9300XWUGML4_I9300ODDGML4_I9300DDUGMK1) 4.3 JB ROM. No Progress!!

Can you try install with my suggested ROM? If it will success, you can install your country's ROM anyway.
After installing it via PIT file, wait for boot. If it stuck in Samsung logo, remove battery, insert the battery again, boot into recovery and try to wipe data.
I'm saying again; Make sure select PIT file in Odin before installation.
Did you try a wipe data when you flashed second stock ROM?? When you got in recovery

I installed the ROM with the PIT file but still no progress!
A new problem:
1) I went to the Samsung people expecting some help
2) And they did the most cruel thing on this earth!!! They said
"The binary counter says 4. That means you have flashed the ROM customly. This has void the warranty of your device. We cant help you if you have void your warranty. Sorry!"

Help needed to fix galaxy s4 on NI4.

I own a Galaxy S4 locked to AT&T. I had my phone rooted and i was running on 4.4.2 through OTA update with NI1 baseband. I also had installed safestrap as my recovery. I was trying to unlock my phone and a guide said to downgrade to NB1 and so i downgraded to NB1 through odin as I read. After doing so my phone was stuck on the AT&T logo while booting. So i tried to flash back to NI1 but the phone went to a bootloop with and i still had 'custom' below the samsung logo when it booted. I tried to fix it with Kies but it failed to fix it and now all i get is ' Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." I tried to fix it through Kies emergency firmware recovery and also through Kies firmware upgrade and initialisation and after downloading the firmware it shows it encountered and unknown error and when it does not show anything in the list below in recovery window. I tried flashing NI1 stock recovery and kernel as well as NC1. But couldn't fix it. I also tried to see how to get rid of odin mode but still i failed to fix it.
At the top of the screen after turning it on it says:
ODIN MODE (shows in red color)
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-I337
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
KNOX KERNEL LOCK: 0x0
KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0x0
CSB-CONFIG-LSB: 0x30
WRITE PROTECTION: Enabled
eMC BURST MODE enabled (Last two lines are in gray color and every lines except the first is in white color)
In download mode when kies fails two more lines in red are added :
START [224, 140]
SV REV. CHECK FAIL : fused , Binary : 1
Thanks to all you for your time. This is my first post I am sorry if i made it lengthy with irrelevant and or unnecessary information. Thank you once again.

It's not uncommon to have to do a factory reset after doing an Odin restore. I'd use it to reflash the latest version and use the stock recovery to reset and then try to reboot.

I tried to. i can not flash stock recovery back. it says pass in odin but when it boots up it says custom and gets stuck in a boot lop for sometime then shuts it self down. Am i doing something wrong? Did I flash an outdated stock recovery or something? I wanted to odin NI1 but i couldnt find complete odin files for it just found rooted ones.

I think that update is only available via OTA file. Looks like you should still be able to do NB1. Check here for details on the upgrade path suggested:
