[Q] Erase and Flash rom - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have from many month installed and tested various different rom on my i9300.
NOw I'm using Final Chaos with Android 4.1.2.
Every time I install a new ROM normally I use following procedure:
star in recovery PhilZ Touch 5
Wipe data / Factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Wipe Dalvik Cache
after install the ROM e standard boot.
Some times after all initializiation procedure, I found on the internal rom some data already downloaded or received in the past (ie. icon, some images) How is it possible?
Normaly I restore only rubrica from google and nothing else. But wipe data / factory reset doesn't erase all internal rom?

Total wipe mounts and storage in recovery .
Format cache sdcard system data and preload .

I use the Chaos rom , so you need a full wipe with that rom , so you can do what was suggested by jjegan or you could use Megawipe , seach for it on xda , flash that , it will wipe away everything that is from the past rom (SO KEEP THE ROM IN YOUR EXTERNAL SD CARD) , but back up everything from your internal sd card , whatever you need , and then flash it , then flash the Final Chaos once again

Yes Chaos rom is a zip file ... keep it on your external sd card and flash from that (but the Dev for chaos says to flash from internal sd card. .. because you want to clear all waste from the internal sd card , you'll have to flash from the external sd card. . But if you experience problems after flashing , move the rom.zip to the internal as card and Wipe data/factory reset , wipe cache partition , format system under mounts and storage and then wipe dalvik cache under advanced options and then Flash the chaos rom from the internal sd card. . Good luck

No not needed as far as i know, i have never restored it. . Just remember it will wipe out the system , so you need to have a rom in the EXTERNAL sd card to flash. . Or your phone won't boot. . But it's always goodto backup your EFS ..

How can I wipe internal memory?

I was able to completely wipe my internal storage in recovery mode on my sgs2, is there a way to do this on the sgs3? other than manually go to the folders and delete each one?
Please advice
Thanks
May i ask why, this could be potentially fatal for your phone (i assume you realise this)
When installing a new rom there are always folders and files left behind. Cwm was abke to do this before withouth harming our devices. Wondering why the option is not there like in the sgs 2 version of cwm
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Performing a factory format using keypad
1. Key in *2767*3855#
2. Finally, SGS3 will be rebooted and factory format.
This will erase everything.. so plz make a backup before this

CWM recovery is the same mounts and storage format what you want .
Standard recovery factory reset and wipe all data is the same .

[Q] Clean format of internal memory

I want to clean format all internal memory and install new custom ROM. The reason to full format is coz lot of garbage in Internal memory in which I am not able to segregate the used app or current app etc.
I have 16 GB internal Memory and 8 GB SD Card.
1. How to wipe all internal memory (tool)?
2. If I wipe, what about CWM? Would it also be deleted? Can I install and run it from External SD Card.
3. After full wipe, will it go in Root mode to install custom ROM.
A wipe using CWM should be fine.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
1) go into recovery and select "wipe data / factory reset", or "format /data"
2) No and no. It won't be deleted and you can't install it on ext. SD
3) Install a custom ROM from CWM recovery. If your current system / ROM is rooted the root will not be affected by the wipe / format.
But WHEN I INSTALLED. Custom rom i did wipe data but the old app data was still in the internal memory. I have s3 and its internal memory is 16 gb and some is allocated to system i guess. So is it only wiping the system space not the total internal memory?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
On the S3, the internal "SD Card" memory is only a subfolder of /data.
And /data will get formatted during a wipe....
You can also initiate the wipe from Settings -> Backup And Restore (IIRC) - that will even tell you that everything on /sdcard will be deleted as well
CWM
So is there anyway i can go and clean total internal memory and then install a backup zip from external SD card. I just want my internal SD Card to be totally wiped and install my backup image (/Data only if I am right). Because my image is only 2.5 GB but the space left on my internal SD card is 2 GB out of 16 Gb. Thanks for the help in advance
Cwm recovery
Format data system cache and sd card .
Flash stock rom via Odin flash CF root
Restore Nandroid backup .
Or put the phone in a microwave and delete all storage .

I've asked this question time and time again and no one has yet given me a answer. I can only assume no one ever cleans there internal memory
Anyway the best way to totally clean your phone Ive found is to flash back to stock then go to recovery (stock recovery) select format/wipe from there Stock recovery wipes all of "/data" unlike CWR

I stand corrected after a short test selecting reset from the settings menu does in fact format this space :highfive:
Yes you are right. I did the same

How to wipe all from I9300

Hi all !
I have tried 3 different methods to delete all from my rooted Galaxt s3 I9300. But everytime the phone boots up again my photos and files are still there. How can i delete EVERYTHING so i can start fresh ???
Use superwipe in ARHD thread or factory reset from stock recovery.
"It's all in the game yo, all in the game..." - Omar Little
Format your sd card
3 methods i used were to go into phone settings and back up and restore. Then i tried the *2767*3855# and finally from the recovery menue but still all my files are on the phone when i boot up again

no, it just wipes sd card, not system
Use a damp cloth.

The best way is to factory reset on STOCK RECOVERY. CWM recovery doesnt delete your internal sdcard. Or if you have cwm already, use superwipe (install as zip in cwm).

How do I format internal SD?

Hi
I have a huge problem.
Sms/mms app won't run. It crashes after boot and any time I try to start it.
I have made several clean installations of stock ROM with no result. Including wiping everything of course.
But I can't figure out how to format the internal SD. There's files left there no matter what I do.
How do I make a true format so I can start over from scratch?

Probably files whose path gets rebuilt after a wipe, like DCIM.
In twrp recovery you have in wipe menu options to wipe internal sdcard, or format data completely, including /data/media (= sdcard).

BTW: that must be some special. You can't format the internal card when using the phone. To many files in it that system uses.

Why are you even trying to flash your phone without even knowing if you have the 'i' version or not?
Are you telling me you never thought to check 'About phone' prior to flashing?
C'mon people, i'm not being funny but stupidity like this is getting boring to read through now!
