Ok, I have searched a lot on the internet and couldn't find and couldn't find a explanation to my problem. The thing is the I can't get my device to use the H/W decode on HD videos, I have tried a lot of softwares mx player, v player, dice player. I can watch a video that uses the 700x400 for example and the same encoded video in 1280x720 doesn't play, all that come out is sound. In both cases I am using the H/W... I have seem a lot of people saying that HD video works flawless on galaxy s2 if it isn't 10 bit encoded, so I am at a loss here, the S/W one is pretty laggy on my HD videos, that is why I won't use it...
Any leads?

I suppose you're using a non - sammy based custom rom, something like Cyanogenmod, due to Samsung closed source driver's h/w decoder won't properly work on Aosp Roms.

Could you post a highly( just 30 seconds would be enough) trimmed version of the file you're trying to play. Usually all types of hd mkv's has worked flawlessly for me (even in Cyanogenmod.. Lol). If you could, post it in a zip file here.

Yes, I reproduced your same problem, as I thought that particular file encoding is not properly supported(h/w gives audio only, and s/w gives lags) normal 1080p, HD mkv's do play perfectly though just checked it out, If you wanna play that video just use a converter and create a lossless mp4, that should work fine anyway.

Im not having that luck, MP4 is not supported on my phone
Files that won't play for me seem to be more of an audio issue than video. I think it's the audio codecs that were preventing playback, still got a lot of testing to do on this front. I sometimes have a video start playing fine and after 3s a "vidoe player cannot play this file" pops up.
Don't know what you're talking about? I just converted a movie to MP4 format just the other night, and it plays just fine on my phone. You've gotta be doing something wrong?
My phone plays everything I've slapped on my sdcard... Mp4s exp... And its beautiful...

Mpeg4 wordplay for me, but it's video only. Absolutely no audio.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
it was probably an mp4 using AAC audio instead of AC3. I discovered this when I found the built in video player wouldn't play audio on some of my MKV files that Rockplayer would.
Yeah, I've been extremely impressed with video playback. I think there is an app called rockplayer you may want to try (though the format you mentioned seems to work for most)

Anybody know why?

wmv files are always a pain in the ass, they always play slower than usual if they are really using the wmv codecs, this is seems more a codec issue than a phone issue.
Have you tried other files with same extension?
hook the file to the computer and check the codec using Media Player classic from K-lite codec pack, on the properties you can see the codec used.
If on your computer the file get heavy/slower to jump from one time to other this is for sure a codec issue.
Do you get any additional lags anywhere?
Maybe the version of rock player that you are using is not the good one for your phone.
Are you using hardware acceleration? (rockplayer config)

Yes I am using whatever the latest of rockplayer is.
No I'm not using hardware acceleration. Where do I get that?!
Gladbto know it's more a codex issue than a phone thing. Still annoying though.
So is an easy fix to use hardware acceleration? !

You can try QQPlayer if it ends up being a codec issue, or system player will even play some wmv.
Is it a 720p video? High resolution or bitrate could be the problem too. Hd video is just impractical to use on x10 unless it's from the video camera.
Stick with sd mp4 trailers if you can find them.

How are these files encoded? What ROM are you using? What happens when they "don't work?"
I've yet to come across an AVI file that the stock Video player didn't play perfectly, something doesn't sound right here.

I always use Handbrake to encode videos/movies (H.264). I use the Apple TV2 setting in Handbrake. If the movie had a good soundtrack, I'll keep the unaltered dolby digital (AC3) "track" along with the two channel Dolby PLII AAC audio. Less exciting movies just get the AAC two channel audio. A feature length movie will be roughly 1GB. I store them on a media server for TV watching and load a few on my phone too. You could always go lower resolution/higher compression if you wanted a phone only version.
The ATV2 setting works great on
1. ATV2
2. PS3
3. GSII with Mobo player
The stock player on my phone had some problems with the videos (the ones with AC3 streams if I remember right). Mobo plays everything I throw at it. Free.
For the computer, VLC is an awesome video player.

Yup, that's the preset.
You MAY likely be able to enable some features that improve quality/compression - the preset there is guaranteed but may not be optimal.
Enabling 8x8 transform and CABAC seems OK on my Galaxy Player, so should be OK on the SGSII.
At some pointas you start enabling extra compression features, I haven't figured out which setting it is yet, one setting will cause audio to lag by a half second or so.

MX Player not really hardware accelerate (certain MKV file got sound issue and can only software render) for Nexus 10 at the moment. I am using BS Player now, it work nicely at Nexus 10.

BSPlayer works fest for me, MX Player is a bit slower and has problems with some files.
This is in newest update already. I like MX's Interface Bettler though
Even with the update MX player still slightly stutters with mkv files I have tried 720p and 1080p
For me MX better (smoother) plays mkv 720p on software decoding.
